We extend a previous analysis of spatial correlation functions for classical electromagnetic vector fields near a perfectly conducting boundary [PRE, vol. 73, 036604 (2006)] to the case of an isotropic semi-infinite medium with planar interface and characterized by a first-order impedance boundary condition. The analytical results are illustrated with calculations for the case of point separations in the direction perpendicular to the interface. For the incident plus reflected field, the dependence of the complex-valued and inhomogeneous spatial correlation function on the permittivity, permeability and conductivity of the medium is determined. For the refracted field, the spatial correlation is again complex-valued but homogeneous and highly sensitive to the value of the refractive index. Based on the derived dependencies, novel nonlocal measurement methods for precision characterization of electromagnetic material properties are suggested. The influence of the directionality of incidence for electromagnetic beams is investigated. Narrowing the beam width results in a slower decrease of the amplitude of the correlation function as a function of point separation. Previously obtained asymptotic results for statistically homogeneous random free fields are retrieved as special cases.
We derive an expression for the macroscopic force density that a narrow-band electromagnetic field imposes on a dissipative isotropic medium. The result is obtained by averaging the microscopic form for Lorentz force density. The derived expression allows us to calculate realistic electromagnetic forces in a wide range of materials that are described by complex-valued electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The three-dimensional energy-momentum tensor in our expression reduces for lossless media to the so-called Helmholtz tensor that has not been contradicted in any experiment so far.…
The phase velocity of plane waves propagating in an isotropic chiral medium can be simultaneously positive for left-circularly polarized light and negative for right-circularly polarized light(or vice versa). The constitutive parameter regimes supporting this phenomenon are established for nondissipative and dissipative mediums. The boundary between positive and negative phase velocity is characterized by infinite phase velocity.
Electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material were investigated via the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Specifically, two scenarios were considered: surface waves guided by the planar interface of an isotropic chiral material and (a) an isotropic dielectric material and (b) a uniaxial dielectric (or plasmonic) material. Both plasmonic and non-plasmonic achiral partnering materials were investigated. In scenario (a) surface waves akin to surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves were excited, while in scenario (b) surface waves akin to Dyakonov waves and akin …
Electromagnetic invisibility cloak requires material with anisotropic distribution of the constitutive parameters deduced from a geometrical transformation as first proposed by Pendry et al. [Science 312, 1780 (2006)]. In this paper, we proposed a useful method to realize the required radius-dependent, anisotropic material parameters and to construct an electromagnetic cloak through concentric layered structure of thin, alternating layers of homogeneous isotropic materials. With proper design of the permittivity or the thickness ratio of the alternating layers, we demonstrated the low-reflecti…
We report on a strategy for achieving negative phase velocity (NPV) in a homogenized composite medium (HCM) conceptualized using the Bruggeman formalism. The constituent material phases of the HCM do not support NPV propagation. The HCM and its constituent phases are isotropic dielectric-magnetic mediums; the real parts of their permittivities/permeabilities are negative-valued whereas the real parts of their permeabilities/permittivities are positive-valued.
The propagation of plane waves in an isotropic chiral medium (ICM) is investigated. Simple conditions are derived--in terms of the constitutive parameters of the ICM--for the phase velocity to be directed opposite to the direction of power flow. It is demonstrated that phase velocity and power flow may be oppositely directed provided that the magnetoelectric coupling is sufficiently strong.
A medium which is an isotropic chiral medium from the perspective of a co-moving observer is a Faraday chiral medium (FCM) from the perspective of a non-co-moving observer. The Tellegen constitutive relations for this FCM are established. By an extension of the Beltrami field concept, these constitutive relations are exploited to show that planewave propagation is characterized by four generally independent wavenumbers. This FCM can support negative phase velocity at certain translational velocities and with certain wavevectors, even though the corresponding isotropic chiral medium does not. T…
Dyadic Green functions for time-harmonic fields in a homogeneous, isotropic, dielectric-magnetic medium, moving with constant velocity, are derived by first implementing a simple transformation and then using the dyadic Green functions available for uniaxial dielectric-magnetic mediums.
In this paper, we utilize the deformation transformation optics (DTO) method to design electromagnetic beam bender, which can change the direction of electromagnetic wave propagation as desire. According to DTO, the transformed material parameters can be expressed by deformation tensor of the spatial transformation. For a beam bender, since the three principal stretches at each point induced by the spatial transformation are independent to each other, there are many possibilities to simplify the transformed material parameters of the bender by adjusting the stretches independently. With the DT…
We propose a generalization of the two-dimensional eikonal-limit cloak derived from a conformal transformation to three dimensions. The proposed cloak is a spherical shell composed of only isotropic media; it operates in the transmission mode and requires no mirror or ground plane. Unlike the well-known omnidirectional spherical cloaks, it may reduce visibility of an arbitrary object only for a very limited range of observation angles. In the short-wavelength limit, this cloaking structure restores not only the trajectories of incident rays, but also their phase, which is a necessary ingredien…
In the past years quasi-conformal mapping has been typically used to design broadband electromagnetic cloaks. However, this technique has some inherit practical limitations such as the lateral beam shift, rendering the device visible or difficult to hide a large object. In this work we circumvent these issues by using strict conformal mapping to build the first isotropic cloak. Microwave near-field measurement shows that our device (with dielectric constant larger than unity everywhere) has a very good cloaking performance and a broad frequency response. The present dielectric approach could b…
Negative real parts of the permittivity and permeability lead an isotropic chiral medium to exhibit circular dichroism that is reversed with respect to that exhibited by an identical medium but the real parts of whose permittivity and permeability are positive.
Analysis of electromagnetic planewave propagation in a medium which is a spatiotemporally homogeneous, temporally nonlocal, isotropic, chiral medium in a co-moving frame of reference shows that the medium is both spatially and temporally nonlocal with respect to all non-co-moving inertial frames of reference. Using the Lorentz transformations of electric and magnetic fields, we show that plane waves which have positive phase velocity in the co-moving frame of reference can have negative phase velocity in certain non-co-moving frames of reference. Similarly, plane waves which have negative phas…
The sign of the refractive index of any medium is soley determined by the requirement that the propagation of an electromagnetic wave obeys Einstein causality. Our analysis shows that this requirement predicts that the real part of the refractive index may be negative in an isotropic medium even if the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability are both positive. Such a system may be a route to negative index media at optical frequencies. We also demonstrate that the refractive index may be positive in left-handed media that contain two molecular species where one is in its excited st…
The Lorenz--Mie formulation of electromagnetic scattering by a homogeneous, isotropic, dielectric-magnetic sphere was extended to incorporate topologically insulating surface states characterized by a surface admittance $γ$. Closed-form expressions were derived for the expansion coefficients of the scattered field phasors in terms of those of the incident field phasors. These expansion coefficients were used to obtain analytical expressions for the total scattering, extinction, forward scattering, and backscattering efficiencies of the sphere. Resonances exist for relatively low values of $γ$,…
Using a TE/TM decomposition for an angular plane-wave spectrum of free random electromagnetic waves and matched boundary conditions, we derive the probability density function for the energy density of the vector electric field in the presence of a semi-infinite isotropic medium. The theoretical analysis is illustrated with calculations and results for good electric conductors and for a lossless dielectric half-space. The influence of the permittivity and conductivity on the intensity, random polarization, statistical distribution and standard deviation of the field is investigated, both for i…
We present a description of the evolution of a polarized Gaussian beam in a smoothly inhomogeneous isotropic medium in frame of the eikonal-based complex geometrical optics which describes the phase front and the cross section of the Gaussian beam using the quadratic expansion of the complex-valued eikonal. The linear complex-valued eikonal components are introduced to describe the influence of the spin-orbit interaction and the deformation of a polarized Gaussian beam on the propagation firstly in this paper. In an inhomogeneous medium, the interaction between the polarization and the rotatio…
An electromagnetic wave-packet propagating in a linear, homogeneous, and isotropic medium changes shape while its envelope travels with different velocities at different points in spacetime. In general, a wave-packet can be described as a superposition of plane-waves having different frequencies ω and different propagation vectors k. While the angular spread of the k-vectors gives rise to diffractive effects, it is the frequency-dependence of the refractive index of the host medium that is commonly associated with optical dispersion. When the spectral distribution of the wave-packet is confine…
The equations of electromagnetic fields in a medium is usually written in the rest frame of the medium. We outline a method of generalizing the discussion to arbitrary inertial frames. In the discussion, we also include the possibility that the medium is optically active, a possibility that is often overlooked in discussions of electromagnetic fields in a medium.
An analytical model is presented for a rectangular lattice of isotropic scatterers with electric and magnetic resonances. Each isotropic scatterer is formed by putting appropriately 6 $Ω$-shaped perfectly conducting particles on the faces of a cubic unit cell. A self-consistent dispersion equation is derived and then used to calculate correctly the effective permittivity and permeability in the frequency band where the lattice can be homogenized. The frequency range in which both the effective permittivity and permeability are negative corresponds to the mini-band of backward waves within the …
The propagation of electromagnetic surface waves guided by the planar interface of two isotropic chiral materials, namely materials $\calA$ and $\calB$, was investigated by numerically solving the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Isotropic chiral material $\calB$ was modeled as a homogenized composite material, arising from the homogenization of an isotropic chiral component material and an isotropic achiral, nonmagnetic, component material characterized by the relative permittivity $\eps_a^\calB$. Changes in the nature of the surface waves were explored as the volume fraction $f_a…
We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior …
We present an elementary discussion of the momentum transferred by an electromagnetic wave propagating in a dispersive medium. Our analysis is based on Minkowski's electromagnetic momentum density which have been recently seen to be consistent with a fully covariant expression of the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field in a dispersive medium and with all the experimental evidence. We show that the medium may be either pulled or pushed as the electromagnetic pulse enters in it depending on the value of the frequency.
The dyadic Green function for a homogeneous electromagnetic medium inspired by the spatiotemporally nonhomogeneous constitutive equations of gravitationally affected vacuum is derived.
We analytically and numerically investigated the internal optical forces exerted by an electromagnetic wave inside an amorphous metamaterial medium. We derived, by using the principle of virtual work, the Helmholtz stress tensor, which takes into account the electrostiction effect. Several examples of amorphous media are considered, and different electromagnetic stress tensors, such as the Einstein-Laub tensor and Minkowski tensor, are also compared. It is concluded that the Helmholtz stress tensor is the appropriate tensor for such systems.
The work is devoted to the self-action of laser beams propagating in the isotropic phase of a cholesteric liquid crystal near the transition temperature to the mesophase in a wide range of parameter values characterizing the nonlocality of the nonlinear optical response of the medium, defocusing in the medium, the power of incident laser radiation and diffraction in the liquid crystal. The origin of the primary singularities of both polarization components of radiation in a wide range of parameters of radiation and the medium is investigated for different values of the parameter characterizing…
Two choices are possible for the refractive index of a linear, homogeneous, isotropic, active, dielectric material. Either of the choices is adequate for obtaining frequency-domain solutions for (i) scattering by slabs, spheres, and other objects of bounded extent; (ii) guided-wave propagation in homogeneously filled, cross-sectionally uniform, straight waveguide sections with perfectly conducting walls; and (iii) image formation due to flat lenses. The correct choice does matter for the half-space problem, but that problem is not realistic.
Bi-isotropic media constitute a proper scenario for scrutinizing optical effects stemming from magnetoelectric parameters. Chiral magnetic current is a macroscopic effect arising from the chiral magnetic effect that enriches the phenomenology of a classical dielectric medium. This work examines optical aspects of bi-isotropic media in the presence of magnetic conductivity. The full isotropic scenario manifests circular birefringence described by a dispersive rotatory power that changes sign at a given frequency. For a bi-isotropic medium with antisymmetric magnetic conductivity, an intricate d…
By clarifying the approach of Luan (Phys. Rev. E, 2009), we can generalize the analysis of dispersive (meta)materials, and treat other material responses involving not only loss, but also gain and coherent response.
We study the no reflection condition for a planar boundary between vacuum and an isotropic chiral medium. In general chiral media, elliptically polarized waves incident at a particular angle satisfy the no reflection condition. When the wave impedance and wavenumber of the chiral medium are equal to the corresponding parameters of vacuum, one of the circularly polarized waves is transmitted to the medium without reflection or refraction for all angles of incidence. We propose a circular polarizing beam splitter as a simple application of the no reflection effect.
This article aims at developing a simple, automated test bench procedure to measure polarization rotation of an electromagnetic wave upon propagation through a nonreciprocal medium. A comprehensive measurement approach is developed from the scattering matrix. The proposed measurement procedure is demonstrated using an electronically tunable nonreciprocal metamaterial, and the accuracy of the proposed method is compared with the well-accepted conventional measurement technique.
We describe the evolution of a paraxial electromagnetic wave characterizing by a non-uniform polarization distribution with singularities and propagating in a weakly anisotropic medium. Our approach is based on the Stokes vector evolution equation applied to a non-uniform initial polarization field. In the case of a homogeneous medium, this equation is integrated analytically. This yields a 3-dimensional distribution of the polarization parameters containing singularities, i.e. C-lines of circular polarization and L-surfaces of linear polarization. The general theory is applied to specific exa…
Generalization of the theory of interaction of the electromagnetic P-waves with a metal film on a case of the film concluded between two dielectric environments is carried out.
The general formula for probability to record a twisted photon produced by a charged particle moving in an inhomogeneous isotropic dispersive medium is derived. The explicit formulas for probability to record a twisted photon are obtained for the radiation of a charged particle traversing a dielectric plate or an ideally conducting foil. It is shown that, in the case when the charged particle moves along the detector axis, all the radiated twisted photons possess a zero projection of the total angular momentum and the probability of their radiation is independent of the photon helicity. The ra…
We first derive the round-trip Jones matrix for double passage through a reciprocal optical medium by means of reflection off a plane mirror that could be optically anisotropic. We then show that if a medium with only linear birefringence and linear dichroism is placed between a pair of orthogonal quarterwave plates with principal axes at 45 deg to that of the medium and the sandwich is placed in front of an isotropic mirror it behaves, under double passage, like an isotropic medium. We describe a simple liquid crystal device that behaves, in reflection, as an isotropic medium whose refractive…
Analytical solutions are presented for the electromagnetic radiation by an arbitrary pulsed source into a homogeneous time-varying background medium. In the constant-impedance case an explicit radiation formula is obtained for the synchronous permittivity and permeability described by any positive function of time. As might be expected, such a medium introduces significant spectral shifts and spatio-temporal modulation, which are analized here for the linear and exponential time-variations of the medium parameters. In the varying-impedance case the solution is obtained for the fourth-order pol…
Generalization of the theory of interaction of electromagnetic S-wave with a metal film on a case of the film concluded between two dielectric environments is developed.
We propose a general method to arbitrarily manipulate an electromagnetic wave propagating in a two-dimensional medium, without introducing any scattering. This leads to a whole class of isotropic spatially varying permittivity and permeability profiles that are invisible while shaping the field magnitude and/or phase. In addition, we propose a metamaterial structure working in the infrared that demonstrates deep sub-wavelength control of the electric field amplitude and strong reduction of the scattering. This work offers an alternative strategy to achieve invisibility with isotropic materials…
In a frame of quasi-crystal approximation the dispersion equations are obtained for the wave vector of a coherent electromagnetic wave propagating in a media which contains a random set of parallel dielectric cylinders with possible overlapping. The results are compared with that for the case when a regularity at the cylinder placement exists.
Theoretical and computational study of reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves with $p$-polarized and normal incidence electric wave amplitude vector on anisotropic, inhomogeneous and linear medium has been done. The medium used in this study is a model of susceptibility in the form of rank-2 tensor which its value depends on the frequency, position and time. Theoretical and computational formulation of transmittance and reflectance are then tested using vacuum and FeF$_2$ magnetic material.
It is shown that not all linear electromagnetic constitutive laws will define almost-complex structure on the bundle of 2-forms on the spacetime manifold when composed with the Poincare duality isomorphism, but only a restricted class of them that includes linear spatially isotropic and some bi-isotropic laws. Although this does not trivialize the formulation of the basic equations equations of pre-metric electromagnetism, it does affect their reduction to metric electromagnetism by its effect on the types of media that are reducible, and possibly its effect on the way that such media support …
Reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves by artificial periodic composites (metamaterials) can be accurately modeled by an effective medium theory only if the boundary of the medium is explicitly taken into account and the two effective parameters of the medium -- the index of refraction and the impedance -- are correctly determined. Theories that consider infinite periodic composites do not satisfy the above condition. As a result, they cannot model reflection and transmission by finite samples with the desired accuracy and are not useful for design of metamaterial-based devices. As…
Guided by the planar interface of two dissimilar linear, homogeneous mediums, a Voigt surface wave arises due to an exceptional point of either of the two matrixes necessary to describe the spatial characteristics in the direction normal to the planar interface. There is no requirement for either or both partnering mediums to be dissipative, unlike a Voigt plane wave which can propagate only in a dissipative medium.
The propagation of a quasi-harmonic electromagnetic wave in a bulk hyperbolic dielectric metamaterial is considered. If the group velocities dispersion is not taken into account, then wave propagation can be described either by the hyperbolic nonlinear Schrodinger equation or by the hyperbolic Manakov equations. It is shown that the region in the space of wave vectors in which the modulation instability of a spatially homogeneous wave is possible is not limited, in contrast to the case of ordinary media.
The scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave from Young pinholes upon a quasi-homogeneous (QH) anisotropic medium is studied within the accuracy of the first-order Born approximation. By assuming that the diffractive wave from pinholes are paraxial with respect to the propagation direction, it is shown that the correlation of incident wave, anisotropic correlation statistics of the medium, and the pinhole size configuration can influence the statistical properties of the scattered field. In particular, the normalized spectral density, spectral degree of coherence, and spectral degree of pol…
Planewave propagation in a simply moving, dielectric-magnetic medium that is isotropic in the co-moving reference frame, is classified into three different categories: positive-, negative-, and orthogonal-phase-velocity (PPV, NPV, and OPV). Calculations from the perspective of an observer located in a non-co-moving reference frame show that, whether the nature of planewave propagation is PPV or NPV (or OPV in the case of nondissipative mediums) depends strongly upon the magnitude and direction of that observer's velocity relative to the medium. PPV propagation is characterized by a positive re…
The electromagnetic field phasors in an isotropic chiral material (ICM) are superpositions of two Beltrami fields of different handedness. Application of the Bruggeman homogenization formalism to two-component composite materials delivers ICMs wherein Beltrami fields of one handedness attenuate whereas Beltrami waves of the other handedness amplify. One component material is a dissipative ICM, the other an active dielectric material.
In this paper we present a modification of the geometrical optics method, which allows one to properly separate the complex amplitude and the phase of the wave solution. Appling this modification to a smoothly inhomogeneous isotropic medium, we show that in the first geometrical optics approximation the medium is weakly anisotropic. The refractive index, being dependent on the direction of the wave vector, contains the correction, which is proportional to the Berry geometric phase. Two independent eigenmodes of right-hand and left-hand circular polarizations exist in the medium. Their group ve…
It has been known that, keeping the outer boundary coordinates intact before and after a coordinate transformation is a sufficient condition for obtaining a reflectionless transformation medium. Here we prove that it is also a necessary condition for reflectionless transformation media in an isotropic and homogenous background. Our analytical results show that the outer boundary coordinates of a reflectionless transformation medium must be the same as the original coordinates with a combination of rotation and displacement, which is equivalent to situation that the boundary coordinates are kep…
A method is proposed for the analysis of the propagation of electromagnetic waves through a homogeneous slab of a medium with Drude-Lorentz dispersion behavior, and excited by a causal sinusoidal source. An expression of the time dependent field, free from branch-cuts in the plane of complex frequencies, is established. This method provides the complete temporal response in both the steady-state and transient regimes in terms of discrete poles contributions. The Sommerfeld and Brillouin precursors are retrieved and the corresponding set of poles are identified. In addition, the contribution in…
Electromagnetic (EM) composites have stimulated tremendous fundamental and practical interests owing to their flexible electromagnetic properties and extensive potential engineering applications. Hence, it is necessary to systematically understand the physical mechanisms and design principles controlling EM composites. In this tutorial, we first provide an overview of the basic theory of electromagnetism about electromagnetic constitutive parameters that can represent the electromagnetic properties of materials. We show how this corpus allows a consistent construction of effective medium theor…
The form of the energy-momentum tensor when a quasimonochromatic field propagates into and through an antireflection-coated, sourceless, transparent, continuous, linear magneto-dielectric medium, initially at rest in the local frame, remains controversial. The Minkowski energy-momentum tensor is the main component of the electromagnetic conservation law. It has been known for over a century that the electromagnetic conservation law is unsound as evidenced by alternative energy-momentum tensors that have been proposed to ameliorate known physical deficiencies (violation of conservation of angul…
We examine the momentum and angular momentum (including spin) properties of linear waves, both longitudinal (Langmuir) and transverse (electromagnetic), in an isotropic nonrelativistic collisionless electron plasma. We focus on conserved quantities associated with the translational and rotational invariance of the wave fields with respect to the homogeneous medium; these are sometimes called pseudo-momenta. There are two types of the momentum and angular momentum densities: (i) the kinetic ones associated with the energy flux density and the symmetrized (Belinfante) energy-momentum tensor and …
