We report a numerical investigation of surface plasmon (SP) propagation in ordered and disordered linear chains of metal nanospheres. In our simulations, SPs are excited at one end of a chain by a near-field tip. We then find numerically the SP amplitude as a function of propagation distance. Two types of SPs are discovered. The first SP, which we call the ordinary or quasistatic, is mediated by short-range, near-field electromagnetic interaction in the chain. This excitation is strongly affected by Ohmic losses in the metal and by disorder in the chain. These two effects result in spatial decay of the quasistatic SP by means of absorptive and radiative losses, respectively. The second SP is mediated by longer range, far-field interaction of nanospheres. We refer to this SP as the extraordinary or non-quasistatic. The non-quasistatic SP can not be effectively excited by a near-field probe due to the small integral weight of the associated spectral line. Because of that, at small propagation distances, this SP is dominated by the quasistatic SP. However, the non-quasistatic SP is affected by Ohmic and radiative losses to a much smaller extent than the quasistatic one. Because of that, the non-quasistatic SP becomes dominant sufficiently far from the exciting tip and can propagate with little further losses of energy to remarkable distances. The unique physical properties of the non-quasistatic SP can be utilized in all-optical integrated photonic systems.
A canonical quantization scheme for localized surface plasmons (LSPs) in a metal nanosphere is presented based on a microscopic model composed of electromagnetic fields, oscillators that describe plasmons, and a reservoir that describes excitations other than plasmons. The eigenmodes of this fully quantum electrodynamic theory show a spectrum that includes radiative depolarization and broadening, including redshifting from the quasi-static LSP modes, with increasing particle size. These spectral profiles correctly match those obtained with exact classical electrodynamics (Mie theory). The pres…
We study the thermal response of a single spherical metal nanoparticle to continuous wave illumination as a function of its size. We show that the particle temperature increases non-monotonically as the particle size increases, indicating that the photo-thermal response can be optimized by tuning the particle size and illumination wavelength. We also compare the size-effect on the photo-thermal effects of gold and silver nanoparticles and find somewhat surprisingly that Ag NPs are more efficient heat generators only for sufficiently small sizes. These results have importance primarily for appl…
When intense laser fields interact with nanoscale targets, strong-field physics meets plasmonic near-field enhancement and sub-wavelength localization of light. Photoemission spectra reflect the associated attosecond optical and electronic response and encode the collisional and collective dynamics of the solid. Nanospheres represent an ideal platform to explore the underlying attosecond nanophysics because of their particularly simple geometry. This review summarizes key results from the last decade and aims to provide the essential stepping stones for students and researchers to enter this f…

C. We report sensing of single nanoparticles using disordered metallic nanoisland substrates supporting surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Speckle patterns arising from leakage radiation of elastically scattered SPPs provides a unique fingerprint of the scattering microstructure at the sensor surface. Experimental measurements of the speckle decorrelation are presented and shown to enable detection of sorption of individual gold nanoparticles and polystyrene beads. Our approach is verified through bright-field and fluorescence imaging of particles adhering to the nanoisland substrate.
Optical spin angular momenta in a confined electromagnetic field exhibit remarkable difference with their free space counterparts, in particular, the optical transverse spin that is locked with the energy propagating direction lays the foundation for many intriguing physical effects such as unidirectional transportation, quantum spin Hall effect, photonic Skyrmion, etc. In order to investigate the underlying physics behind the spin-orbit interactions as well as to develop the optical spin-based applications, it is crucial to uncover the spin texture in a confined field, yet it faces challenge …
Random impedance networks are widely used as a model to describe plasmon resonances in disordered metal-dielectric and other two-component nanocomposites. In the present work, the spectral properties of resonances in random networks are studied within the framework of the random matrix theory. We have shown that the appropriate ensemble of random matrices for the considered problem is the Jacobi ensemble (the MANOVA ensemble). The obtained analytical expressions for the density of states in such resonant networks show a good agreement with the results of numerical simulations in a wide range o…
In this work, a new structure is suggested for spasing. The presented spaser is made up of a graphene nanosphere, which supports localized surface plasmon modes, and a quantum dot array, acting as a gain medium. The gain medium is pumped by an external laser source. Since all the plasmons are carried on a graphene platform, the structure features coherent surface plasmons with high confinement and large life time. All the structure is analyzed theoretically using full quantum mechanical description. The main advantage of the proposed spaser is the simple tuning capability of it by changing gra…
Photon-number statistics of the emitted photons from a quantum dot placed in the vicinity of a metallic nanoparticle (with either shell or solid-sphere geometry) in the non-Markovian regime is investigated theoretically. In the model scheme, the quantum dot is considered as a InAs three- level system in Lambda-type configuration with two transition channels. One of channels is driven by a polarized classical field while the two channels are coupled to the plasmon modes. Plasmon resonance modes of a nanoshell, in contrast of a nanosphere, are tunable at demand frequency by controlling the thick…
Random impedance networks are widely used as a model to describe plasmon resonances in disordered metal-dielectric nanocomposites. In order to study thin films, two-dimensional networks are often used despite the fact that such networks correspond to a two-dimensional electrodynamics [J.P. Clerc et al, J. Phys. A 29, 4781 (1996)]. In the present work, we propose a model of two-dimensional systems with three-dimensional Coulomb interaction and show that this model is equivalent to a planar network with long-range capacitive connections between sites. In a case of a metal film, we get a known di…
In this paper, we propose a one-dimensional disordered plasmonic structure composed of a graphene single layer placed on a random grating composed of InAs. The propagation of a plasmonic wave through this structure is investigated numerically. By calculation of normalized localization length for systems with different disorder strengths, it is determined whether or not the system is in the localized regime. For some frequencies, depending on the disorder level, Anderson localization occurs for plasmonic waves propagating through the graphene layer. Furthermore, the effect of optical loss on th…
We propose to use molecular picocavity ensembles as macroscopic coherent nonlinear optical devices enabled by nanoscale strong coupling. For a generic picocavity model that includes molecular and photonic disorder, we derive theoretical performance bounds for coherent cross-phase modulation signals using weak classical fields of different frequencies. We show that strong coupling of the picocavity {\it vacua} with a specific vibronic sideband in the molecular emission spectrum results in a significant variation of the effective refractive index of the metamaterial relative to a molecule-free s…
We investigate numerically and experimentally the near-field response of disordered arrays comprising asymmetrically split ring resonators that exhibit strong cooperative response. Our simulations treat the unit cell split ring resonators as discrete pointlike oscillators with associated electric and magnetic point dipole radiation, while the strong cooperative radiative coupling between the different split rings is fully included at all orders. The methods allow to calculate local field and Purcell factor enhancement arising from the collective electric and magnetic excitations. We find subst…
Different optical nanostructures containing both loss and gain components attract ever-increasing attention as novel advanced materials and building blocks for a variety of nanophotonic and plasmonic applications. Unique tunable optical signatures of the so-called active metamaterials support their utilizing for sensing, imaging, and signal processing on micro- and nanoscales. However, this tunability requires flexible control over the metamaterials parameters, which could be provided by involving a set of nonlinear interactions. In this paper, we propose a method of governing ultrashort pulse…
