We study the interaction of focused radially-polarized light with metal nanospheres. By expanding the electromagnetic field in terms of multipoles, we gain insight on the excitation of localized surface plasmon-polariton resonances in the nanoparticle. We show that focused radially-polarized beams offer more opportunities than a focused plane wave or a Gaussian beam for tuning the near- and far-field system response. These results find applications in nano-optics, optical tweezers, and optical data storage.
Dynamic manipulation of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and wave steering are important in plasmonic applications. In this work, we excite a curved SPP in topological continua by applying a radial magnetic bias. We believe that it is a new technique to create a unidirectional SPP traveling along a curved trajectory. We also derive a Greens function model for radially-biased plasma, applicable to curved SPPs. We compare the properties of unidirectional curved SPPs with the usual case when an axial bias is applied.
We present a theoretical analysis of the effects of short range surface plasmon polariton excitation on sub-wavelength bridges in metal gratings. We show that localized resonances in thin metal bridges placed within the slit of a free-standing silver grating dramatically modify transmission spectra and boost absorption regardless of the periodicity of the grating. Additionally, the interference of multiple localized resonances makes it possible to tailor the absorption properties of ultrathin gratings, regardless of the apertures' geometrical size. This tunable, narrow-band, enhanced-absorptio…
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
Polaritons in polar biaxial crystals with extreme anisotropy offer a promising route to manipulate nanoscale light-matter interactions. The dynamical modulation of their dispersion is great significance for future integrated nano-optics but remains challenging. Here, we report a momentum-directed strategy, a coupling between the modes with extra momentum supported by the interface and in-plane hyperbolic polaritons, to tailor topological transitions of anisotropic polaritons in biaxial crystals. We experimentally demonstrate such tailored polaritons at the interface of heterostructures between…
Exciton-polaritons, elementary excitations arising from the strong coupling regime between photons and excitons in insulators or semiconductors, represent a promising platform for studying quantum fluids of light and realizing prospective all-optical devices. Among different materials for room temperature polaritonic devices, two-dimensional (2D) layered perovskites have recently emerged as one of the promising candidates thanks to their prominent excitonic features at room temperature. Here we report on the experimental demonstration of exciton-polaritons at room temperature in resonant metas…
We address evolution of a spinor polariton condensate in radially periodic potentials. Such potentials allow for the observation of novel nonlinear excitations and support a variety of dynamically stable soliton states never demonstrated before in polariton condensates, including ring-like solitons with density peaks located in different radial minima of the potential and extended dynamically stable multiring patterns. Among the advantages of the system is that azimuthal modulational instabilities are suppressed due to dominating repulsive interactions between polaritons with the same spin, th…
We illustrate that the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation through the prism coupling method is fundamentally limited by destructive interference of spatial light components. We propose that the destructive interference can be canceled out by tailoring the relative phase for the different spatial components. As a numerical demonstration, we show that through the phase modulation the excited SPP field is concentrated to a hot energy spot, and the SPP field intensity is dramatically enhanced about three folds in comparison with a conventional Gaussian beam illumination.

This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
We introduce the unique class of propagation-invariant surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) representing pulsed surface wave packets propagating along unpatterned metal-dielectric interfaces and are localized in all dimensions - with potentially subwavelength transverse spatial widths. The characteristic features of such linear diffraction-free, dispersion-free `plasmonic bullets' stem from tight spatio-temporal correlations incorporated into the SPP spectral support domain, and we thus call them `space-time' SPPs. We show that the group velocity of space-time SPP wave packets can be readily tune…
The tailoring of plasmonic near-fields is central to the field of nanophotonics. The detailed knowledge of the field distribution is crucial for a design and fabrication of plasmonic sensors, detectors, photovoltaics, plasmon-based cicuits, nanomanipulators, electrooptic plasmonic modulators and atomic devices. We report on a fully quantitative comparison between near field observation and numerical calculations, considering the intensity distribution for TM and TE polarisations, necessary for the construction of devices in all these areas. We present the near field scanning microscopy (NSOM) …
Magnetoplasmonics exploits interactions between light and magnetic matter at the nanoscale for light manipulation and resonant magneto-optics. One of the great challenges of this field is overcoming optical losses in magnetic metals. Here we exploit surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited at the interface of a SiO2/Au bilayer to induce strong magneto-optical responses on the Ni nanodisks of a periodic array. Using a reference system made of Au nanodisks, we show that optical losses in Ni do hardly broaden the linewidth of SPP-driven magneto-optical signals. Loss mitigation is attained becaus…
We propose a method to enhance the spatial coupling between ballistic exciton-polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity based on available spatial light modulator technologies. Our method, verified by numerically solving a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii model, exploits the strong nonequilibrium nature of exciton-polariton condensation driven by localized nonresonant optical excitation. Tailoring the excitation beam profile from a Gaussian into a polygonal shape results in refracted and focused radial streams of outflowing polaritons from the excited condensate which can be directed to…
Surface plasmon polariton is collective oscillation of the free electrons at metal dielectric interface. As a wave phenomenon, surface plasmon polaritons can be focused using appropriate excitation geometry of metallic structures. We theoretically demonstrate the possibility of controlling nanoscale short pulse superfocusing based on the generation of radially polarized surface plasmon polariton mode of conical metallic tip. Numerical simulation for femtosecond pulse propagation along a silver nano-needle is discussed. The spatial distribution for a near field strongly depends on a linear chir…
Freestanding photonic crystals can be used to trap both light and mechanical vibrations. These "optomechanical crystal" structures have already been experimentally demonstrated to yield strong coupling between a photon mode and a phonon mode, co-localized at a single defect site. Future devices may feature a regular superlattice of such defects, turning them into "optomechanical arrays". In this letter we predict that tailoring the optomechanical band structure of such arrays can be used to implement Dirac physics of photons and phonons, to create a photonic gauge field via mechanical vibratio…
Optical binding allows creation of mechanically stable nanoparticle configurations owing to formation of self-consistent optical trapping potentials. While the classical diffraction limit prevents achieving deeply subwavelength arrangements, auxiliary nanostructures enable tailoring optical forces via additional interaction channels. Here, a dimer configuration next to metal surface was analyzed in details and the contribution of surface plasmon polariton waves was found to govern the interaction dynamics. It was shown that the interaction channel, mediated by resonant surface waves, enables a…
We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a periodic grating of shallow rectangular grooves in a metallic film with the goal of maximizing the coupling efficiency of an extended plane wave (PW) of visible or near-infrared light into a single surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode on a flat metal surface. A PW-to-SPP power conversion factor > 45 % is demonstrated at a wavelength of 780 nm, which exceeds by an order of magnitude the experimental performance of SPP grating couplers reported to date at any wavelength. Conversion efficiency is maximized by matching the dissipative SPP…
Hyperbolic metasurfaces based on van der Waals (vdW) materials support propagation of extremely anisotropic polaritons towards nanoscale light compression and manipulation, and thus has great potential in the applications of planar hyperlens, nanolasing, quantum optics and ultrasensitive infrared spectroscopy. Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a vdW metasurface can manipulate the propagation of hyperbolic polaritons at the level of single atomic layers, possessing higher degree of field confinement and lower losses than the conventional media. However, active manipulation of hy…
Hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals materials and metamaterial heterostructures provide unprecedented control over light-matter interaction at the extreme nanoscale. Here, we propose a concept of type-I hyperbolic metasurface supporting highly-squeezed magnetic designer polaritons, which act as magnetic analogues to hyperbolic polaritons in the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the first Reststrahlen band. Comparing with the natural h-BN, the size and spacing of the metasurface unit cell can be readily scaled up (or down), allowing for manipulating designer polaritons in frequency and in sp…
Transition-metal dichalcogenides with their exciton-dominated optical behavior emerge as promising materials for realizing strong light-matter interactions in the visible range and at ambient conditions. When these materials are combined with metals, the energy confining ability of plasmon polaritons in metals below the diffraction limit, allows for further enhancing and tailoring the light-matter interaction, due to the formation of plexcitons in hybrid metal-TMDC structures at the interface. Herein, we demonstrate that the coupling between quasi-propagating plasmons in plasmonic crystals and…
The achievement of large values of the light-matter coupling in nanoengineered photonic structures can lead to multiple photonic resonances contributing to the final properties of the same hybrid polariton mode. We develop a general theory describing multi-mode light-matter coupling in systems of reduced dimensionality and we explore their novel phenomenology, validating the predictions of our theory against numerical electromagnetic simulations. On the one hand, we characterise the spectral features linked with the multi-mode nature of the polaritons. On the other hand, we show how the interf…
Remote excitation and emission of two-photon luminescence and second-harmonic generation are observed in micrometer long gold rod optical antennas upon local illumination with a tightly focused near-infrared femtosecond laser beam. We show that the nonlinear radiations can be emitted from the entire antenna and the measured far-field angular patterns bear the information regarding the nature and origins of the respective nonlinear processes. We demonstrate that the nonlinear responses are transported by the propagating surface plasmon at excitation frequency, enabling thereby polariton-mediate…
Nonscattering optical anapole condition is corresponding to the excitation of radiationless field distributions in open resonators, which offers new degrees of freedom for tailoring light-matter interaction. Conventional mechanisms for achieving such a condition relies on sophisticated manipulation of electromagnetic multipolar moments of all orders to guarantee superpositions of vanished moment strengths at the same wavelength. In contrast, here we report on the excitation of optical radiationless anapole hidden in a resonant state of a Si nanoparticle utilizing tightly focused radially polar…
We demonstrate that both linear and nonlinear Fano resonances can be realized on two dimensional magnetic metamaterials. The Fano resonance comes from the interference between localized magnetic plasmon resonance and propagating surface plasmon polaritons. When studying the linear optical response of the metamaterial structure, this interference phenomenon was observed in the ellipsometric spectrum. By finely tailoring the geometrical parameters of the magnetic metamaterial device, the nonlinear Fano response was tuned to a near-infrared wavelength (1.61-1.8 μm) of femtosecond pump laser, and …
The optical spin-Hall effect results in the formation of an antisymmetric real space polarization pattern forming spin currents. In this paper, we show that the exciton-polariton parametric scattering allows us to reverse the sign of these currents. We describe the pulsed resonant excitation of a strongly coupled microcavity with a linearly polarized pump at normal incidence. The energy of the pulse is set to be close to the inflexion point of the polariton dispersion and the focusing in real space populates the reciprocal space on a ring. For pumping powers below the parametric scattering thr…
We develop a novel theoretical framework describing polariton-enhanced spin-orbit interaction of light on the surface of two-dimensional media. Starting from the integral formulation of electromagnetic scattering, we exploit the reduced dimensionality of the system to introduce a quantum-like formalism particularly suitable to fully take advantage of rotational invariance. Our description is closely related to that of a fictitious spin one quantum particle living in the atomically thin medium, whose orbital, spin and total angular momenta play a key role in the scattering process. Conservation…
Bose-Einstein condensation is a remarkable manifestation of quantum statistics and macroscopic quantum coherence. Superconductivity and superfluidity have their origin in Bose-Einstein condensation. Ultracold quantum gases have provided condensates close to the original ideas of Bose and Einstein, while condensation of polaritons and magnons have introduced novel concepts of non-equilibrium condensation. Here, we demonstrate a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of surface plasmon polaritons in lattice modes of a metal nanoparticle array. Interaction of the nanoscale-confined surface plasmons with …
We study the nonlinear optical propagation of two different classes of space-varying polarized light beams -- radially symmetric vector beams and Poincaré beams with lemon and star topologies -- in a rubidium vapour cell. Unlike Laguerre-Gauss and other types of beams that experience modulational instabilities, we observe that their propagation is not marked by beam breakup while still exhibiting traits such as nonlinear confinement and self-focusing. Our results suggest that by tailoring the spatial structure of the polarization, the effects of nonlinear propagation can be effectively control…
Optical skyrmions have recently been constructed by tailoring electric or spin field distributions through the interference of multiple surface plasmon polaritons, offering promising features for advanced information processing, transport and storage. Here, we construct topologically robust plasmonic skyrmions in a wisely tailored space-coiling meta-structure supporting magnetic localized spoof plasmons (LSPs), which are strongly squeezed down to λ3/106 and do not require stringent external interference conditions. By directly measuring the spatial profile of all three vectorial magnetic field…
Photonics and optoelectronics are at the foundations of widespread technologies, from high-speed Internet to systems for artificial intelligence, automotive LiDAR, and optical quantum computing. Light enables ultrafast speeds and low energy for all-optical information processing and transport, especially when confined at the nanoscale level, at which the interactions of light with matter unveil new phenomena, and the role of local symmetries becomes crucial. In this Perspective, we discuss how symmetry violations provide unique opportunities for nanophotonics, tailoring wave interactions in na…
Surface plasmon polaritons carrying orbital angular momentum are of great fundamental and applied interest. However, common approaches for their generation are restricted to having a weak dependence on the properties of the plasmon-generating illumination, providing a limited degree of control over the amount of delivered orbital angular momentum. Here we experimentally show that by tailoring local and global geometries of vortex generators, a change in circular polarization handedness of light imposes arbitrary large switching in the delivered plasmonic angular momentum. Using time-resolved p…
Directional emission of photons with designed polarizations and orbital angular momenta is crucial for exploiting full potential of quantum emitters (QEs) within quantum information technologies. Capitalizing on the concept of hybrid plasmon-QE coupled metasurfaces, we develop a holography-based design approach allowing one to construct surface nanostructures for outcoupling QE-excited circularly diverging surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) into well-collimated beams of photons with desirable polarization characteristics propagating along given directions. Using the well-established simulation …
