Near-field enhancement and sub-wavelength imaging properties of a system comprising a coupled pair of two-dimensional arrays of resonant nanospheres are studied. The concept of using two coupled material sheets possessing surface mode resonances for evanescent field enhancement is already well established in the microwave region. This paper shows that the same principles can be applied also in the optical region, where the performance of the resonant sheets can be realized with the use of metallic nanoparticles. In this paper we present design of such structures and study the electric field distributions in the image plane of such superlens.
In this work, we discuss the way in which electric and magnetic dipole resonances arising in the optical scattering spectrum of non-absorbing dielectric nanospheres can be accurately approximated by means of simple explicit expressions that depend on sphere's radius, incident wavelength and relative refractive index. We find such expressions to hold not only for high but also for moderate refractive-index values, thus complementing the results reported in previous studies.
We study the thermal response of a single spherical metal nanoparticle to continuous wave illumination as a function of its size. We show that the particle temperature increases non-monotonically as the particle size increases, indicating that the photo-thermal response can be optimized by tuning the particle size and illumination wavelength. We also compare the size-effect on the photo-thermal effects of gold and silver nanoparticles and find somewhat surprisingly that Ag NPs are more efficient heat generators only for sufficiently small sizes. These results have importance primarily for appl…
When intense laser fields interact with nanoscale targets, strong-field physics meets plasmonic near-field enhancement and sub-wavelength localization of light. Photoemission spectra reflect the associated attosecond optical and electronic response and encode the collisional and collective dynamics of the solid. Nanospheres represent an ideal platform to explore the underlying attosecond nanophysics because of their particularly simple geometry. This review summarizes key results from the last decade and aims to provide the essential stepping stones for students and researchers to enter this f…
A thorough theoretical study of the optical properties of periodic Si nanosphere arrays is undertaken, placing particular emphasis on the synergy between electric and magnetic Mie resonances, which occur in high-refractive-index nanoparticles and can lead to a rich variety of phenomena ranging from perfect reflection to controlled diffraction. By means of systematic calculations using the layer-multiple-scattering method that we properly extended so as to describe periodic arrays with many scatterers per unit cell, in conjunction with finite-element simulations, we optimized surfaces of Si nan…
Spin-orbit interaction of light can lead to the so-called optical mirages, i.e. a perceived displacement in the position of a particle due to the spiraling structure of the scattered light. In electric dipoles, the maximum displacement is subwavelength and does not depend on the optical properties of the scatterer. Here we will show that the optical mirage in high refractive index dielectric nanoparticles depends strongly on the ratio between electric and magnetic dipolar responses. When the dual symmetry is satisfied (at the first Kerker condition), there is a considerable enhancement (far ab…

Sub-nanometer 3D morphometric precision of polarisation-resolved wide-field optical extinction microscopy determines the roundness of individual gold nanospheres
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhanc…
We report the possibility to generate tremendous light-field enhancements within shallow nano-trenches made in a high index dielectric material, because of resonant behaviours reminiscent of what we get with sub-wavelength plasmonic cavities. The high quality factors are explained through a modal analysis and can be tuned with appropriate design rules. The thin dielectric void gratings here simulated could be a relevant alternative to plasmon-based devices for chemical sensing, or could be used as efficient wavelength-selective photo-absorbers by taking weakly absorbing materials.
The modern information networks are built on hybrid systems working at disparate optical wavelengths. Coherent interconnects for converting photons between different wavelengths are highly desired. Although coherent interconnects have conventionally been realized with nonlinear optical effects, those systems require demanding experimental conditions such as phase matching and/or cavity enhancement, which not only bring difficulties in experimental implementation but also set a narrow operating bandwidth (typically in MHz to GHz range as determined by the cavity linewidth). Here, we propose and…
Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interaction can be achieved via dedicated optimization of resonant plasmonic modes that are spectrally matched to the different wavelengths involved in the particular nonlinear optical process. In this work, we investigate the generation and enhancement of broadband four-wave mixing (FWM) in a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG). The azimuthally varying grating periodicity in an ACG offers a well-defined channel to mediate the near field and the far field over a broad range of wavelengths. However, the particular mechanism responsible for…
In this article, we theoretically demonstrate multilevel impurity photovoltaic effect in an efficient silicon dual-homojunction solar cell that ensures an extended absorption of longer wavelength light. Along with suitable contact work functions (Ni and Ta as anode and cathode, respectively), three impurity energy levels from acceptor type impurities (One from Tl and two from Zn) have been introduced in the energy gap of the absorber layer in the solar cell. The pristine Si solar cell shows a PCE of 25.4% with JSC= 37.99 mA/cm2, VOC=0.780V and FF=85.76%, respectively. The incorporation of Tl i…
Molecular beam epitaxy allows for the monolithic integration of wavelength-flexible epitaxial infrared plasmonic materials with quantum-engineered infrared optoelectronic active regions. We experimentally demonstrate a six-fold enhancement in photoluminescence from ultra-thin (total thickness of 1/32-th wavelength) long wavelength infrared (LWIR) superlattices grown on highly doped semiconductor designer metal virtual substrates when compared to the same superlattice grown on an undoped virtual substrate. Analytical and numerical models of the emission process via a Dyadic Greens function form…
Modal phase matching (MPM) is a widely used phase matching technique in Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As and other $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear waveguides for efficient wavelength conversions. The use of a non-fundamental spatial mode compensates the material dispersion but also reduces the spatial overlap of the three interacting waves and therefore limits the conversion efficiency. In this work, we develop a technique to increase the nonlinear overlap by modifying the material nonlinearity, instead of the traditional method of optimizing the modal field profiles. This could eliminate the limiting factor of low spa…
Developing colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials with high carrier density that show optical resonances and photochemical activity extending from the visible to the mid-infrared (MIR) ranges remains a challenging pursuit. Here, we report the fabrication of titanium nitride (TiN) nanobars obtained using a two step procedure based on a wet chemical route synthesis of TiO2 nanowires and their subsequent high temperature annealing in ammonia flow. Electromagnetic simulations of the resulting TiN nanobars reveal a rich set of optical resonances featuring transverse, longitudinal and mixed transverse lo…
