We predict the existence of surface gap modes, known as Tamm states for electronic systems, in truncated photonic crystals formed by two types of dielectric rods. We investigate the energy threshold, dispersion, and modal symmetries of the surface modes, and also demonstrate the existence and tunability of nonlinear Tamm states in binary photonic crystals with nonlinear response.
We present a theoretical study of electromagnetic surface waves localized at an interface separating a conventional uniform medium and a semi-infinite 1-D photonic crystal made of alternate left-handed metamaterial and right-handed material which we refer to as left-handed photonic crystal. We find novel type of surface mode's structure, the so-called surface Tamm states and demonstrate that the presence of metamaterial in the photonic crystal structure allows for a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and …
We report for the first time the bandgap engineering of Tamm plasmon photonic crystals - Tamm plasmon structures of which the metalic layer is periodically patterned into lattice of subwavelength period. By adopting a double period design, we evidenced experimentally a complete photonic bandgap up to $150\,nm$ in the telecom range. Moreover, such design offers a great flexibility to tailor on-demand, and independently, the band-gap size from $30\,nm$ to $150\,nm$ and its spectral position within $50\,nm$. Finally, by implementing a defect cavity within the Tamm plasmon photonic crystal, an ult…
We manipulate optical Tamm states in graphene-based photonics to achieve and steer large magneto-optical effects. Here we report the presence of a giant Faraday rotation via a single graphene layer of atomic thickness while keeping a high transmission. The Faraday rotation is enhanced across the interface between two photonic crystals due to the presence of an interface mode, which presents a strong electromagnetic field confinement at the location of the graphene sheet. Our proposed scheme opens a promising avenue to realize high performance graphene magneto-optical devices that can be extend…
This review describes hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures based on periodic structures that have metallic coatings or inserts which make use of the Tamm plasmon for sensing applications. The term Tamm plasmon refers a particular resonance resulting from the enhancement of a surface plasmon resonance absorption via coupling to a wavelength-matching photonic bandgap provided by a photonic crystal. Tamm plasmon-based devices come in an ample variety of material and geometric combinations, each designed to perform a specific kind of measurement. While the physical effect is quite well documented …
In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel kind of Tamm plasmon topological superlattice (TTS) by engineering Tamm photonic crystals (TPCs) belonging to a different class of topology. Utilizing specifically designed double-layer metasurfaces etching on planar multilayered photonic structures, the TPC that supports the Tamm plasmon photonic bandgap is realized in the visible regime. Through the coupling of topological interface states existing between different TPCs, hybrid topological interface states of Tamm plasmon, called supermodes, are obtained that can be fully desc…
A model of an organic solar cell based on a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a photosensitive layer with an embedded square or hexagonal plasmonic array has been proposed. The spectral properties of the structures have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory and confirmed by the transfer matrix method. It has been shown that the conjugation of a photonic crystal with a photosensitive layer leads to the excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton at the interface between them and, consequently, to an increase in the integ…
The phenomenon of trapping broad spectrum of light is known as `rainbow trapping' and achieved using all-dielectric, hybrid metallo-dielectric or all-metallic configurations. In the latter cases, unavoidable ohmic losses result in sub-picosecond trapped-mode lifetimes. For all practical purposes, novel strategies are required to be devised for trapping and subsequently, releasing broadband electromagnetic (em) field with lifetime > 1 ps. We present a rainbow trapping configuration using the excitation of multiple optical Tamm (OT) modes in an one-dimensional chirped photonic crystal (PC) desig…
In this paper we study the formation of topological Tamm states at the interface between a semi-infinite one-dimensional photonic-crystal and a metal. We show that when the system is topologically non-trivial there is a single Tamm state in each of the band-gaps, whereas if it is topologically trivial the band-gaps host no Tamm states. We connect the disappearance of the Tamm states with a topological transition from a topologically non-trivial system to a topologically trivial one. This topological transition is driven by the modification of the dielectric functions in the unit cell. Our inte…
We propose a novel photonic structure composed of metal nanolayer, Bragg mirror and metal nanolayer. The structure supports resonances that are transitional between Fabry-Perot and Tamm modes. When the dielectric contrast of the DBR is removed these modes are a pair of conventional Fabry-Perot resonances. They spectrally merge into a Tamm mode at high contrast. Such behavior differs from the results for structures supporting Tamm modes reported earlier. The optical properties of the structure in the frequency range of the DBR stop band, including highly beneficial 50% transmittivity through th…
We study the electromagnetic surface waves localized at an interface separating a one-dimensional photonic crystal and left-handed metamaterial, the so-called surface Tamm states. We demonstrate that the metamaterial allows for a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and a vortex-like structure.
We demonstrate theoretically the existence of one-way Tamm plasmon-polaritons on the interface between magnetophotonic crystals and conducting metal oxides. In contrast to conventional surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs), Tamm plasmon-polariton (TPPs) occur at frequencies above the bulk plasma frequency of the conducting materials, provided that the dispersion curves of such surface modes lie outside the light cone for the conducting oxides and simultaneously fall into the photonic band gap of the magnetophotonic crystal. The nonreciprocal properties of TPPs are caused by violation of the period…
Optical properties of the photonic crystal covered with a perforated metal film were investigated and the existence of the Fano-type resonances was shown. The Fano resonances originate from the interaction between the optical Tamm state and the waveguide modes of the photonic crystal. It manifests itself as a narrow dip in a broad peak in the transmission spectrum related to the optical Tamm state. The design of a sensor based on this Fano resonance that is sensitive to the change of the environment refractive index is suggested.
Spectral manifestations of hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes in a 1D photonic crystal bounded with a silver layer and containing a nematic liquid crystal layer working as a microcavity have been studied using numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the hybrid modes can be effectively tuned owing to the high sensitivity of the liquid crystal to the temperature and external electric field variations. It is established that the effect of temperature on the transmission spectrum of the investigated structure is most pronounced at the point of the phase transition of the liquid crystal to the iso…

Photonic crystals and metamaterials have emerged as two classes of tailorable materials that enable precise control of light. Plasmonic crystals, which can be thought of as photonic crystals fabricated from plasmonic materials, Bragg scatter incident electromagnetic waves from a repeated unit cell. However, plasmonic crystals, like metamaterials, are composed of subwavelength unit cells. Here, we study terahertz plasmonic crystals of several periods in a two dimensional electron gas. This plasmonic medium is both extremely subwavelength ($\approx λ/100$) and reconfigurable through the applicat…
In this work we develop a theory of surface electromagnetic waves localized at the interface of periodic metal-dielectric structures. We have shown that the anisotropy of plasma frequency in metal layers lifts the degeneracy of plasma oscillations and opens a series of photonic band gaps. This results in appearance of surface waves with singular density of states - we refer to them as Tamm-Langmuir waves. Such naming is natural since we have found that their properties are very similar to the properties of both bulk Langmuir and surface Tamm waves. Depending on the anisotropy parameters, Tamm-…
The enhanced photonic spin hall effect (PSHE) plays a positive role in the flexible manipulation of photons. Here, by combining Dirac semimetals with Bragg reflector constructed by one-dimensional photonic crystal, we theoretically design a simple multilayer structure to enhance and manipulate the PSHE. Through the detailed and optimal design of the conductivity characteristics of Dirac semimetals and the structural parameters of the whole model, we realize the excitation of Optical Tamm states (OTSs) in the multilayer structure, so that the PSHE can be enhanced and controllable. The theoretic…
We demonstrate experimentally that Tamm plasmons in the near-IR can be supported by a dielectric mirror interfaced with a metasurface, a discontinuous thin metal film periodically patterned on the sub-wavelength scale. More crucially, not only do Tamm plasmons survive the nano-patterning of the metal film, but they also become sensitive to external perturbations, as a result. In particular, by depositing a nematic liquid crystal on the outer side of the metasurface we were able to red-shift the spectral position of Tamm plasmon by 35 nm, while electrical switching of the liquid crystal enabled…
We introduce a new "universality class" of artificial optical media - photonic hyper-crystals. These hyperbolic metamaterials with periodic spatial variation of dielectric permittivity on subwavelength scale, combine the features of optical metamaterials and photonic crystals. In particular, surface waves supported by a hyper-crystal, possess the properties of both the optical Tamm states in photonic crystals and surface plasmon polaritons at the metal-dielectric interface.

The resonant modes associated with engineered photonic structures of different spatial-dimension are essential to obtain bright on-demand single photon sources for quantum technologies. Negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) center in diamond is proposed as an excellent single photon source at room temperature. The possible optical readout of spin states in diamond makes it a good candidate for spin-photon interface. However, the poor light collection, feeble zero-phonon line, low emission rate, and the presence of broad phonon-induced emission limits the use of NV- center in quantum techno…
We investigate Tamm plasmon (TP) modes in a metal/semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) interface. A thin Ag (silver) layer with an optimized thickness (~ 55 nm from simulation) was deposited on nanoporous GaN DBRs fabricated using electrochemical etching on freestanding semipolar GaN substrates. The reflectivity spectra of the DBRs are compared before and after the Ag deposition and with that of a blanket Ag layer deposited on GaN. The results indicate presence of a TP mode at ~ 455 nm on the structure after the Ag deposition. An active medium can also be accommodated within the mod…
We predict that interfaces of modulated photonic lattices can support a novel type of generic surface states. Such linear surface states appear in truncated but otherwise perfect (defect-free) lattices as a direct consequence of the periodic modulation of the lattice potential, without any embedded or nonlinearity-induced defects. This is in a sharp contrast to all previous studies, where surface states in linear or nonlinear lattices, such as Tamm or Shockley type surface states, are always associated with the presence of a certain type of structural or induced surface defect.
In this article, we developed a generalized coupled-mode theory for mixing an isolated state with the gapped continuum to unify the engineering mechanism of gap-protected zero modes, Fano resonance and Tamm surface states, even though those phenomena are diverse in numerous branches of physics and optics. By tuning the on-site potential and coupling strength of/with the isolated state, we found the operating characteristics from zero modes, Fano resonance and to Tamm modes, with explicitly demonstrating their localization, transmission spectra and distinct evolution dynamics of the 'bound stat…
Rabi-like splitting and self-referenced refractive index sensing in hybrid plasmonic-1D photonic crystal structures have been theoretically demonstrated. The coupling between Tamm plasmon and cavity photon modes are tuned by incorporating a low refractive index spacer layer adjacent to the metallic layer to form their hybrid modes. Anticrossing of the modes observed at different values of spacer layer thickness validates the strong coupling between the two modes and causes Rabi-like splitting with different splitting energy. Rabi-like splitting energy decreases with increasing number of period…
The PhD thesis is devoted to the study of second harmonic generation of narrow beams in photonic crystals. The basic idea is that if both frequencies, the fundamental and second harmonics are in the region of self-collimation, then the second harmonics of narrow beams can be very efficient. The beams do not spread diffractively during propagation and interaction. The phase matching is ensured for all components of the interacting beams. This allows to enhance the nonlinear interaction efficiency several times. The thesis rewises the theory of self-collimation of narrow beams in photonic crysta…
Solid state cavity quantum electrodynamics is a rapidly advancing field which explores the frontiers of light-matter coupling. Plasmonic approaches are of particular interest in this field, since they carry the potential to squeeze optical modes to spaces significantly below the diffraction limit1,2, enhancing light-matter coupling. They further serve as an architecture to design ultra-fast, non-linear integrated circuits with smallest footprints3. Transition metal dichalcogenides are ideally suited as the active material in such circuits as they interact strongly with light at the ultimate mo…
The chiral optical Tamm state (COTS) is a special localized state at the interface of a handedness-preserving mirror and a structurally chiral medium such as a cholesteric liquid crystal or a chiral sculptured thin film. The spectral behavior of COTS, observed as reflection resonances, is described by the temporal coupled-mode theory. Mode coupling is different for two circular light polarizations because COTS has a helix structure replicating that of the cholesteric. The mode coupling for co-handed circularly polarized light exponentially attenuates with the cholesteric layer thickness since …
We develop a class of supercell photonic crystals supporting complete photonic bandgaps based on breaking spatial symmetries of the underlying primitive photonic crystal. One member of this class based on a two-dimensional honeycomb structure supports a complete bandgap for an index-contrast ratio as low as $n_{high}/n_{low} = 2.1$, making this the first such 2D photonic crystal to support a complete bandgap in lossless materials at visible frequencies. The complete bandgaps found in such supercell photonic crystals do not necessarily monotonically increase as the index-contrast in the system …
We introduce a small-core air-guiding photonic crystal fiber whose cladding is made of improved air-silica photonic crystal with non-circular air holes placed in triangular lattice. The fiber achieves un-disturbed bandgap guidance over 350nm wavelength range.
The presence of topological edge modes at the interface of two perturbed honeycomb photonic crystals with $C_6$ symmetry is often attributed to the different signs of Berry curvature at the K and K$'$ valleys. In contrast to the electronic counterpart, the Chern number defined in photonic valley Hall effect is not a quantized quantity but can be tuned to finite values including zero simply by changing geometrical perturbations. Here, we argue that the edge modes in photonic valley Hall effect can exist even when Berry curvature vanishes. We numerically demonstrate the presence of the zero-Berr…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of photonic-based nanothermometers, a silicon photonic Bragg grating and photonic crystal cavity. When cladded with silicon dioxide layer the sensors have at least eight times better sensitivity compared to the sensitivity of conventional fiber Bragg grating sensors. We demonstrate that these photonic thermometers are a viable temperature sensing solution.
In this paper we proposed a novel overlay alignment method using two sets of identical photonic crystals (PhCs). In this method the reflection or transmission spectrum of the two overlaid photonic crystals is measured to help wafer tilt, yaw rotation, and translation aligning. The initial testing results with two 1D photonic crystals and analysis of the alignment accuracy are presented. This method is particularly useful in building photonic crystal stacks with nanoimprint lithography (NIL).
We describe a semi-analytical approach for three-dimensional analysis of photonic crystal fibre devices. The approach relies on modal transmission-line theory. We offer two examples illustrating the utilization of this approach in photonic crystal fibres: the verification of the coupling action in a photonic crystal fibre coupler and the modal reflectivity in a photonic crystal fibre distributed Bragg reflector.
Kossel diffraction under standing-wave excitation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal is investigated. It is shown that by combining the reciprocity theorem, the Fermi golden rule and the concept of density of photonic modes, it is possible to predict the behaviour of the Kossel diffraction in such a system.
We report systematic studies of plasmonic and photonic guiding modes in large-area chemical-vapor-deposition-grown graphene on nanostructured silicon substrates. Light interaction in graphene with substrate photonic crystals can be classified into four distinct regimes depending on the photonic crystal lattice constant and the various modal wavelengths (i.e. plasmonic, photonic and free-space). By optimizing the design of the substrate, these resonant modes can magnify the graphene absorption in infrared wavelength, for efficient modulators, filters, sensors and photodetectors on silicon photo…
In this work, it has been investigated whether photonic density of states maps can be applied to the design of photonic crystal-based devices. For this reason, comparison between photonic density of states maps and transmittance maps was carried out. Results of comparison show full correspondence between these characteristics. Photonic density of states maps appear to be preferable for the design of photonic crystal devices, than photonic band gap maps presented earlier and than transmittance maps shown in the paper.
I studied experimentally the beam self-collimation and splitting in two-dimensional microwave photonic crystals. Using a microwave photonic crystal fabricated from alumina rods, I present an experimental proof of principle for an earlier theoretical proposal [A. Matthews et al., Opt. Commun. 279, 313 (2007)] of a photonic crystal beam splitter based on the self-collimation effect.
In this paper, we present a simple, yet versatile, analytical model of one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC). In our theoretical model, we take into account direction of propagation and therefore do not neglect anisotropic nature of photonic crystals. We derive analytical expressions for mode spectrum and density of states in 1D photonic crystal. With those formulas, we obtain mode spectrum characteristics, which depict formation of photonic band gap and reveal properties of photonic crystals.
Here, the frequency degree of freedom is introduced into valley photonic crystals with dual band gaps. Based on the high-order plane wave expansion model, we derive an effective Hamiltonian which characterizes dual band gaps. Metallic valley photonic crystals are demonstrated as examples in which all four topological phases are found. At the domain walls between topologically distinct valley photonic crystals, frequency-dependent edge states are demonstrated and a broadband photonic detouring is proposed. Our findings provide the guidance for designing the frequency-dependent property of topol…
Interface states in a 1-D photonic crystal heterostructure with multiple interfaces are examined. It is found that the behavior of the localized modes in the photonic band gaps is dependent on whether there is an even or odd number of photonic crystal interfaces in the heterostructure. With certain sequences of all dielectric photonic crystals, topological states are shown to split in two, whereas for other heterostructures they are shown to vanish. Additional resonant modes appear depending on how many crystals are in the heterostructure.
In this paper, we have proposed a new compound structure one-dimensional photonic crystal, which include series connection, parallel connection and positive and negative feedback compound structure photonic crystal. We have studied their transmission characteristics and obtained some new results, which should be help to design new type optical devices, such as optical amplifier, photonic crystal laser and so on.
We consider chromatic dispersion of capillary tubes and photonic crystal fibers infiltrated with liquid crystals. A perturbative scheme for inclusion of material dispersion of both liquid crystal and the surrounding waveguide material is derived. The method is used to calculate the chromatic dispersion at different temperatures.
In this paper, we have firstly proposed two-dimensional function photonic crystals, which the dielectric constants of medium columns are the functions of space coordinates $\vec{r}$, it is different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals constituting by the medium columns of dielectric constants are constants. We find the band gaps of two-dimensional function photonic crystals are different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals, and when the functions form of dielectric constants are different, the band gaps structure should be changed, which can be designed …
We introduce topological phases in Photonic Time-Crystals. Photonic Time-Crystals are materials in which the refractive index varies periodically and abruptly in time. When the refractive index changes abruptly, the light propagating in the material experiences time-refraction and time-reflection, analogous to refraction and reflection in photonic crystals. Interference between time-refracted and time-reflected waves gives rise to Floquet-Bloch states and dispersion bands, which are gapped in the momentum. We show that photonic time-crystals can be in a topologically non-trivial phase, and cal…
We study the transmission properties for the waveguide bends composed by a circular photonic crystal. Two types (Y and U type) of the waveguide bends utilizing the circular photonic crystal are studied. It has been shown, compared with the conventional photonic crystal waveguide bends, transmission properties for these bends can be significantly improved. Over a 6.4% bandwidth, less than 1-dB loss/bend are observed. U bent waveguide, i.e., $180^o$ bend, can be easily realized with low loss using the circular photonic crystal.
We demonstrate a method to locally control the temperature of photonic crystal devices via micron-scale electrical heaters. The method is used to control the resonant frequency of InAs quantum dots strongly coupled to GaAs photonic crystal resonators. This technique enables independent control of large ensembles of photonic devices located on the same chip at tuning speed as high as hundreds of kHz.
Photonic crystal slabs have been widely used in nanophotonics for light confinement, dispersion engineering, nonlinearity enhancement, and other unusual effects arising from their structural periodicity. Sub-micron device sizes and mode volumes are routine for silicon-based photonic crystal slabs, however spectrally they are limited to operate in the near infrared. Here, we show that two single-layer graphene sheets allow silicon photonic crystal slabs with submicron periodicity to operate in the terahertz regime, with an extreme 100x wavelength reduction and excellent out-of-plane confinement…
We present a general approach for coupling a specific mode in a planar photonic crystal (PC) waveguide to a desired free-space mode. We apply this approach to a W1 PC waveguide by introducing small index perturbations to selectively couple a particular transverse mode to an approximately Gaussian, slowly diverging free space mode. This "perturbative photonic crystal waveguide coupler" (PPCWC) enables efficient interconversion between selectable propagating photonic crystal and free space modes with minimal design perturbations.
We show that, taking a two-dimensional photonic-crystal slab system as an example, surprisingly high quality factors (Q) over 10^5 are achievable, even in the absence of a rigorous photonic-band-gap. We find that the density of in-plane Bloch modes can be controlled by creating additional photon feedback from a finite-size photonic-crystal boundary that serves as a low-Q resonator. This mechanism enables significant reduction in the coupling strength between the bound state and the extended Bloch modes by more than a factor of 40.
A method is presented for modelling the optical properties of a photonic crystal structure mounted on a substrate which is thick enough that the light reflected from the back is incoherent with reflections from the front. Transmission and reflection spectra are presented for the cases where the structure is a multilayer planar microcavity and an opal photonic crystal. The contributions from the incoherent reflections can be very large, and in the photonic crystal case, change the positions of the spectral peaks.
