Recent theoretical and experimental studies have shown that imaging with resolution well beyond the diffraction limit can be obtained with so-called superlenses. Images formed by such superlenses are, however, in the near field only, or a fraction of wavelength away from the lens. In this paper, we propose a far-field superlens (FSL) device which is composed of a planar superlens with periodical corrugation. We show in theory that when an object is placed in close proximity of such a FSL, a unique image can be formed in far-field. As an example, we demonstrate numerically that images of 40 nm lines with a 30 nm gap can be obtained from far-field data with properly designed FSL working at 376nm wavelength.
In 2011, super-resolution imaging by microsphere superlens was emerged as a simple yet effective method to overcome the diffraction limit that limits the resolution of conventional lenses. Significant progress has since been made. Key advances including the development of scanning superlens system, metamaterial solid immersion lens (mSIL), super-resolution physics and bio-superlens will be discussed. Challenges and solutions are then discussed.
This paper demonstrates a possible new microfiber bio near field lens that uses minor ampullate spider silk, spun from the Nephila edulis spider, to create a real time image of a surface using near field optical techniques. The microfiber bio lens is the world's first natural superlens created by exploring biological materials. The resolution of the surface image overcomes the diffraction limit, with the ability to resolve patterns at 100 nm under a standard white light source in reflection mode. This resolution offers further developments in superlens technology and paves the way for new bio o…
Recently a coherent optical process called plasmon injection ($Π$) scheme, which employs an auxiliary source, has been introduced as a new technique to compensate losses in metamaterials. In this work, a physical implementation of the $Π$ scheme on a thin silver film is proposed for enhanced superlens imaging. The efficacy of the scheme is illustrated by enhancing near-field imaging deeper beyond the diffraction limit in the presence of absorption losses and noise. The auxiliary source is constructed by a high-intensity illumination of the superlens integrated with a near-field spatial filter.…
Superlenses made of plasmonic materials and metamaterials have been exploited to image features of sub-diffractional scale. However, their intrinsic losses impose a serious restriction on the imaging resolution, which is a long-standing problem that has hindered wide-spread applications of superlenses. Optical waves of complex frequency exhibiting a temporally attenuating behavior have been proposed to offset the intrinsic losses in superlenses via virtual gain, but the experimental realization has been missing due to the challenge involved in preparing the illumination with temporal decay. He…

Breaking the diffraction limit is always an appealing topic due to the urge for a better imaging resolution in almost all areas. As an effective solution, the superlens based on the plasmonic effect can resonantly amplify evanescent waves, and achieve subwavelength resolution. However, the natural plasmonic materials, within their limited choices, usually have inherit high losses and are only available from the infrared to visible wavelengths. In this work, we have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the arbitrary materials, even air, can be used to enhance evanescent waves and …
Role of the normal polarization in the far-field subwavelength imaging granted by a dielectric microsphere or microcylinder is discussed and the hypotheses explaining this experimental fact are suggested. One of these hypotheses is confirmed by exact numerical simulations. This mechanism of the magnifying superlens operation is based on the excitation of creeping waves at a curved dielectric interface by a normally polarized dipole. The set of creeping waves after their ejection from the surface creates an imaging beam which may mimic either a Bessel beam or a Mathieu beam depending on the mic…
Super-resolution imaging is vital for optical applications, such as high capacity information transmission, real-time bio-molecular imaging and nanolithography. Technology and method of super-resolution imaging have attracted much attention. In recent years, different kinds of novel lens, from the superlens to the super-oscillatory lens, has been designed and fabricated to break out the diffraction limit. However, the effect of the super-resolution imaging in these lenses is not satisfactory due to intrinsic loss, aberration, bigger sidebands and single super-resolution imaging. In this resear…
We present an analytical description and an experimental realization of interscale mixing microscopy, a diffraction-based imaging technique that is capable of detecting wavelength/10 objects in far-field measurements with both coherent and incoherent broadband light. This method aims at recovering the spatial spectrum of light diffracted by a subwavelength object based on far-field measurements of the interference created by the object and a finite diffraction grating. A single measurement, analyzing the multiple diffraction orders, is often sufficient to determine the parameters of the object…
Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is a promising imaging technique revealing most of the information from diffraction measurements. An ideal CDI should reconstruct complex-valued object from a single-shot far-field diffraction without any priori information about the target. To realize the ideal CDI, we propose a class of parameter-robust illumination pattern. A direct phase optimizing algorithm is also raised here to improve the performance of phase retrieval in strong noise. Experimental result demonstrates the efficiency of our scheme in practical noisy measurement for complex-valued targe…
Complex far fields and optical singularities due to propagation beyond tight focusing: combined effects of wavefront curvature and aperture diffraction
Far-field slit-diffraction of circular optical-vortex (OV) beams is efficient for measurement of the topological charge (TC) magnitude but does not reveal its sign. We show that this is because in the common diffraction schemes the diffraction plane coincides with the incident OV waist plane. With explicit involvement of the incident beam spherical wavefront and based on the examples of Laguerre-Gaussian modes we show that the far-field profile possesses an asymmetry depending on the wavefront curvature and the TC sign. These features enable simple and efficient ways for the simultaneous diagn…
Subwavelength imaging by microsphere lenses is a promising label-free super-resolution imaging technique. There is a growing interest to use live cells to replace the widely used non-biological microsphere lenses. In this work, we demonstrate the use of yeast cells for such imaging purpose. Using fiber-based optical trapping technique, we successfully trapped a chain of yeast cells and bring them to the vicinity of imaging objects. These yeast cells work as near-field magnifying lenses and simultaneously pick up the sub-diffraction information of the nanoscale objects under each cell and proje…
We report the first experimental demonstration of prime number sieve via linear optics. The prime numbers distribution is encoded in the intensity zeros of the far field produced by a spatial light modulator hologram, which comprises a set of diffraction gratings whose periods correspond to all prime numbers below 149. To overcome the limited far field illumination window and the discretization error introduced by the SLM finite spatial resolution, we rely on additional diffraction gratings and sequential recordings of the far field. This strategy allows us to optically sieve all prime numbers…
In Optics it is common to split up the formal analysis of diffraction according to two convenient approximations, in the near and far fields (also known as the Fresnel and Fraunhofer regimes, respectively). Within this scenario, geometrical optics, the optics describing the light phenomena observable in our everyday life, is introduced as the short-wavelength limit of near-field phenomena, assuming that the typical size of the aperture (or obstacle) that light is incident on is much larger than the light wavelength. With the purpose to provide an alternative view on how geometrical optics fits…
Single-emitter microscopy has emerged as a promising method of imaging nanostructures with nanoscale resolution. This technique uses the centroid position of an emitters far-field radiation pattern to infer its position to a precision that is far below the diffraction limit. However, nanostructures composed of high-dielectric materials such as noble metals can distort the far-field radiation pattern. Nanoparticles also exhibit a more complex range of distortions, because in addition to introducing a high dielectric surface, they also act as efficient scatterers. Thus, the distortion effects of…
Reducing the aperture size is a conventional technique to obtain enhanced image resolution in optics but it is obscured by depleting illumination. Polarization coded apertures (PCAs) can be employed to circumvent this critical artifact. We experimentally demonstrate intensity compensated polarization encrypted apertures, which are designed using the polarization modulation characteristics of LC-SLM. PCAs are not limited by the aperture size and hence far-field point spread function (PSF) can be more conveniently recorded using these PCAs. We experimentally validate that Depth of field (DOF) of…
The emergence of far-field super-resolution microscopy has rejuvenated the possibility for nanoscale imaging. Approaches to far-field super-resolution that utilize point scanning often depends on spatially reducing the size of the focused spot. However, the focused spot always achieves high resolution at the expense of extremely low light efficiency for the probing mainlobe and high-intensity sidelobes, which limits the applications in nanoscale imaging and might cause misinterpretation of samples. Here we report a sharp probing spot with the diffraction efficiency of 3.76% at the resolution o…

In recent years several far-field microscopy techniques have been developed which manage to overcome the diffraction limit of resolution. A unifying classification scheme for them is clearly desirable. We argue that existing schemes based on the information capacity of the optical system can not easily be extended to cover e.g., STED microscopy or techniques based on single molecule imaging. We suggest a classification based on a reconstruction of the Abbe limit.
We generalize the notion of the Franhoufer diffraction from a single slit and a circular aperture to the case of partially temporal coherent and quasimonochromatic light. The problem is studied analytically and the effect of coherence length on the diffraction pattern is investigated. In this case the far-field distribution of the irradiance depends on the newly introduced parameter(decoherence parameter) which governs the deviation of the diffraction pattern from the usual one. The corrections due to temporal decoherency on the irradiance distribution in the far field is obtained. Numerical s…
The concept of the diffraction limit put forth by Ernst Abbe and others has been an important guiding principle limiting our ability to tightly focus classical waves, such as light and sound, in the far field. In the past decade, numerous reports have described focusing or imaging with light and sound "below the diffraction limit". We argue that the diffraction limit defined in a reasonable way, for example in terms of the upper bound on the wave numbers corresponding to the spatial Fourier components of the intensity profile, or in terms of the spot size into which at least 50% of the inciden…
Diffraction-free optical beams propagate freely without change in shape and scale. Monochromatic beams that avoid diffractive spreading require two-dimensional transverse profiles, and there are no corresponding solutions for profiles restricted to one transverse dimension. Here, we demonstrate that the temporal degree of freedom can be exploited to efficiently synthesize one-dimensional pulsed optical sheets that propagate self-similarly in free space. By introducing programmable conical (hyperbolic, parabolic, or elliptical) spectral correlations between the beam's spatio-temporal degrees of…
One highly desirable function of a diffraction grating is its ability to deflect incident light into a specific diffraction order with near-perfect efficiency. While such asymmetry can be achieved in a variety of ways, e.g., by using a sawtooth (blazed) geometry, a recently emerged approach is to use a planar metagrating comprised of designer multi-resonant periodic units (metamolecules). Here we demonstrate that a bianisotropic unit cell supporting four resonances interfering in the far field can be used as a building block for achieving the prefect deflection. A coupled mode analysis shows t…
Diffraction gratings with high upward diffraction efficiency and large effective length are required for chip-scale light detection and ranging. In this paper, we propose a diffraction grating based on a multilayer silicon nitride waveguide, which theoretically achieves an upward diffraction efficiency of 92$\%$, a near-field effective length of 376 $μm$ and a far-field divergence angle of 0.105$^{\circ}$ at a wavelength of 850 nm. The diffraction grating has a high tolerance to process variations based on Monte Carlo Analysis. When the conditions are $\pm$5$\%$ layer thickness variation, $\pm…
Based on the Kirchhoff-Fresnel approximation, we consider behavior of the optical vortices (OV) upon propagation of the diffracted Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with topological charge |m| = 1, 2. Under conditions of weak diffraction perturbation (i.e. the diffraction obstacle covers only the far transverse periphery of the incident LG beam), the OVs describe almost perfect 3D spirals within the diffracted beam body, which is an impressive demonstration of the helical nature of an OV beam. The far-field OV positions within the diffracted beam cross section depend on the wavefront curvature of t…
Starting with Maxwell's equations, we derive the fundamental results of the Huygens-Fresnel-Kirchhoff and Rayleigh-Sommerfeld theories of scalar diffraction and scattering. These results are then extended to cover the case of vector electromagnetic fields. The famous Sommerfeld solution to the problem of diffraction from a perfectly conducting half-plane is elaborated. Far-field scattering of plane waves from obstacles is treated in some detail, and the well-known optical cross-section theorem, which relates the scattering cross-section of an obstacle to its forward scattering amplitude, is de…
Recently it was reported that deeply subwavelength features of free space superoscillatory electromagnetic fields can be observed experimentally and used in optical metrology with nanoscale resolution [Science 364, 771 (2019)]. Here we introduce a new type of imaging, termed Deeply Subwavelength Superoscillatory Imaging (DSSI), that reveals the fine structure of a physical object through its far-field scattering pattern under superoscillatory illumination. The object is reconstructed from intensity profiles of scattered light recorded for different positions of the object in the superoscillato…
