A numerical fluid simulation investigation of the temporal evolution of a special class of traveling wave solution of the one dimensional relativistic cold plasma model is reported. The solutions consist of coupled electromagnetic and plasma waves in a solitary pulse shape (Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3172(1992); Phys. Plasmas 9, 1820(2002)).Issues pertaining to their stability, mutual collisional interactions and propagation in an inhomogeneous plasma medium are addressed. It is found that solitary pulses that consist of a single light peak trapped in a modulated density structure are long lived whereas structures with multiple peaks of trapped light develop an instability at the trailing edge. The interaction properties of two single peak structures show interesting dependencies on their relative amplitudes and propagation speeds and can be understood in terms of their propagation characteristics in an inhomogeneous plasma medium.
The evolution of electromagnetic (EM) solitons due to nonlinear coupling of circularly polarized intense laser pulses with low-frequency electron-acoustic perturbations is studied in relativistic degenerate dense astrophysical plasmas with two groups of electrons: a sparse population of classical relativistic electrons and a dense population of relativistic degenerate electron gas. Different forms of localized stationary solutions are obtained and their properties are analyzed. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion, the conditions for the existence and stability of a moving EM solit…
The dynamical behaviors of electromagnetic (EM) solitons formed due to nonlinear interaction of linearly polarized intense laser light and relativistic degenerate plasmas are studied. In the slow motion approximation of relativistic dynamics, the evolution of weakly nonlinear EM envelope is described by the generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (GNLS) equation with local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criteria, the stability of an EM soliton solution of the GNLS equation is studied. Different stable and unstable regions are demonstrated with the effects of soliton velo…
Nonlinear propagation of purely stationary large amplitude electromagnetic (EM) solitary waves in a magnetized electron-positron (EP) plasma is studied using a fully relativistic two-fluid hydrodynamic model which accounts for physical regimes of both weakly relativistic $(P\ll nmc^2)$ and ultrarelativistic $(P\gg nmc^2)$ random thermal energies. Here, $P$ is the thermal pressure, $n$ the number density and $m$ the mass of a particle, and $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum. Previous theory in the literature [Phys. Plasmas \textbf{11}, 3078 (2004)] is advanced and generalized by the relativist…
The nonlinear interaction of intense linearly polarized electromagnetic waves (EMWs) with longitudinal electron density perturbations is revisited in relativistic degenerate plasmas. The nonlinear dynamics of the EMWs and the longitudinal field, driven by the EMW ponderomotive force, is governed by a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations. A numerical simulation of these coupled equations reveals that the generation of wakefields is possible in weakly relativistic degenerate plasmas with $R_0\equiv p_F/mc\ll1$ and $v_g/c\sim1$, where $p_F$ is the Fermi momentum, $m$ is the mas…
In the present paper we consider the nonlinear interaction of high frequency intense electromagnetic (EM) beam with degenerate electron plasmas. In a slowly varying envelop approximation the beam dynamics is described by the couple of nonlinear equations for the vector and scalar potentials. Numerical simulations demonstrate that for an arbitrary level of degeneracy the plasma supports existence of axially symmetric 2D solitons which are stable against small perturbations. The solitons exist if the power trapped in the structures, being the growing function of soliton amplitude, is above a cer…
Propagation and dynamics of electromagnetic vortex solitons have been studied in the electron positron ion plasmas of super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGN). Existence and stability of such structures is demonstrated for highly transparent AGN plasma media. Possible implications of dynamical features and corresponding observational signatures are discussed.
In the limit of extremely intense electromagnetic fields the Maxwell equations are modified due to the photon-photon scattering that makes the vacuum refraction index depend on the field amplitude. In presence of electromagnetic waves with small but finite wavenumbers the vacuum behaves as a dispersive medium. We show that the interplay between the vacuum polarization and the nonlinear effects in the interaction of counter-propagating electromagnetic waves can result in the formation of Kadomtsev-Petviashvily solitons and, in one-dimension configuration, of Korteveg-de-Vries type solitons that…
The existence of localized electromagnetic structures is discussed in the framework of the 1-dimensional relativistic Maxwell-fluid model for a cold plasma with immobile ions. New partially localized solutions are found with a finite-difference algorithm designed to locate numerically exact solutions of the Maxwell-fluid system. These solutions are called quasi-solitons and consist of a localized electromagnetic wave trapped in a spatially extended electron plasma wave. They are organized in families characterized by the number of nodes $p$ of the vector potential and exist in a continuous ran…

The nature of fore-wake excitations created by a charged object moving in a magnetized plasma is investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. Our studies establish for the first time the existence of precursor magneto-sonic solitons traveling ahead of a moving charged object. The nature of these excitations and the conditions governing their existence are delineated. We also confirm earlier molecular dynamic and fluid simulation results related to electrostatic precursor solitons obtained in the absence of a magnetic field. The electromagnetic precursors could have interesting practical ap…
For degenerate astrophysical electron-positron plasmas we have considered dynamics of electromagnetic beams carrying angular momentum. It is found for arbitrary level of degeneracy such a beam having the power exceeding a certain critical value breaks up into many filaments, eventually leading to the formation of stable spatial solitons keeping zero field in the center of the structure.
