The expansion of electromagnetic post-solitons emerging from the interaction of a 30 ps, $3\times 10^{18}$ W cm$^{-2}$ laser pulse with an underdense deuterium plasma has been observed up to 100 ps after the pulse propagation, when large numbers of post-solitons were seen to remain in the plasma. The temporal evolution of the post-solitons has been accurately characterized with a high spatial and temporal resolution. The observed expansion is compared to analytical models and three dimensional particle-in-cell results providing indication of the polarisation dependence of the post-soliton dynamics.
Producing a dense background plasma for neutralization purposes is experimentally difficult and requires a large amount of energy. We show that even an underdense background plasma with a small relative density can achieve high neutralization of intense ion beam pulses. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that if the total plasma electron charge is not comparable to the beam charge, electron emitters are necessary for effective neutralization, but are not needed if the plasma volume is large. Several plasma densities are investigated, including the case of electron emitters without pla…
The propagation of intense laser pulses and the generation of high energy electrons from the underdense plasmas are investigated using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When the ratio of the laser power and a critical power of relativistic self-focusing is the optimal value, it propagates stably and electrons have maximum energies.
Propagation of relativistically intense azimuthally or radially polarized laser pulses (RPP) in underdense plasmas is demonstrated to be unstable, via 3D particle-in-cell simulation and disregarding the Kerr non-linearity. Strong pulse filamentation occurs for RPP in transversely uniform plasma with an increment, $Γ$, close to the well-known one depending on acceleration, $α$, and modulated density gradient length, $L$, as $Γ\approx (α/L)^{1/2}$. In deep plasma channels the instability vanishes. Electron self-injection and acceleration by the resulting laser pulse wake is explored.
We introduce the first approach to volumetrically generate relativistically thermal plasma at gas-jet--accessible density. Using fully kinetic simulations and theory, we demonstrate that two stages of direct laser acceleration driven by two laser pulses in an applied magnetic field can heat a significant plasma volume to multi-MeV average energy. The highest-momentum feature is 2D-isotropic, persists after the interaction, and includes the majority of electrons, enabling experimental access to bulk-relativistic, high-energy-density plasma in an optically diagnosable regime for the first time.
An effective theory of laser--plasma based particle acceleration is presented. Here we treated the plasma as a continuous medium with an index of refraction $n_{m}$ in which a single electron propagates. Because of the simplicity of this model, we did not need to perform PIC simulations in order to study the properties of the electron acceleration. We studied the properties of the electron motion due to the Lorentz force and the relativistic equations of motion were numerically solved and analysed. We compared our results to PIC simulations and experimental data. Keywords: Underdense plasma; E…
Relativistic self-focusing and channeling of intense laser pulses have been studied in underdense plasma using 2D PIC simulations, for different laser powers and plasma densities. Analytical solutions for the stationary evacuated channels have been recovered in PIC simulations. It is shown that otherwise stable channels can accelerate electrons due to surface waves on the walls of the channels. Relativistic filaments with finite electron density are unstable to transverse modulations which lead in the nonlinear stage to the break-up of laser pulses into independent filaments. Different regimes…
A theoretical study of laser and plasma based electron acceleration is presented. An effective model has been used, in which the presence of an underdense plasma has been taken account via its index of refraction $n_{m}$. In the confines of this model, the basic phenomena can be studied by numerically solving the classical relativistic equations of motion. The key idea of this paper is the application of chirped, bichromatic laser fields. We investigated the advantages and disadvantages of mixing the second harmonic to the original $λ= 800 \, \mathrm{nm}$ wavelength pulse. We performed calcula…
Backward terahertz radiation can be produced by a high-intensity laser normally incident upon an underdense plasma. It is found that terahertz radiation is generated by electrons refluxing along the bubble shell. These shell electrons have similar dynamic trajectories and emit backward radiations to vacuum. This scheme has been proved through electron dynamic calculations as well as by using an ionic sphere model. In addition, the bubble shape is found to influence the radiation frequency, and this scheme can be implemented in both uniform and up-ramp density gradient plasma targets. The terah…
Terahertz (THz) emission by two-color, ultrashort optical pulses interacting with underdense helium gases at ultrahigh intensities ($> 10^{19}\,\mathrm{W/cm}^2$) is investigated by means of 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The THz field is shown to be produced by two mechanisms occurring sequentially, namely, photoionization-induced radiation (PIR) by the two-color pulse and coherent transition radiation (CTR) by the wakefield-accelerated electrons escaping the plasma. For plasmas of atomic densities $> 10^{17}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, CTR proves to be the dominant process, providing THz bursts wit…
The propagation of the laser pulses in the underdense plasma is a very crucial aspect of laser-plasma interaction process. In this work, we explored the two regimes of laser propagation in plasma, one with $a_0 < 1$ and other with $a_0 \gtrsim 10$. For $a_0<1$ case, we used a cold relativistic fluid model, wherein apart from immobile ions no further approximations are made. The effect of the laser pulse amplitude, pulse duration, and plasma density is studied using the fluid model and compared with the expected scaling laws and also with the PIC simulations. The agreement between the fluid mod…
An experiment for studying laser self-guiding has been carried out for the high power ultrashort pulse laser interaction with an underdense plasma slab. Formation of an extremely long plasma channel and its bending are observed when the laser pulse power is much higher than the critical power for relativistic self-focusing. The long self-guiding channel formation is accompanied by electron acceleration with a low transverse emittance and high electric current. Particle-in-cell simulations show that laser bending occurs when the accelerated electrons overtake the laser pulse and modify the refr…
In laser-plasma experiments, we observed that ion acceleration from the Coulomb explosion of the plasma channel bored by the laser, is prevented when multiple plasma instabilities such as filamentation and hosing, and nonlinear coherent structures (vortices/post-solitons) appear in the wake of an ultrashort laser pulse. The tailoring of the longitudinal plasma density ramp allows us to control the onset of these insabilities. We deduced that the laser pulse is depleted into these structures in our conditions, when a plasma at about 10% of the critical density exhibits a gradient on the order o…
The nonlinear absorption of laser radiation of relativistic intensities in the underdense plasma by a mechanism of stimulated bremsstrahlung of electrons on the ions/nuclei is investigated in the low frequency approximation. Coefficient of nonlinear inverse-bremsstrahlung absorption is studied for relativistic Maxwellian plasma at asymptotically large values of laser fields and high temperatures of electrons.
We have studied laser pulse channeling in underdense plasma by means of analytical theory and 3D PIC simulations. The most significant result of this paper is the demonstration of the single fully evacuated stationary channel solution can be reached an asymptotic state in PIC simulations. In the lower density and for a laser power above channeling power, we were able to reproduce in PIC simulations the analytical curve. We showed that single channels are stable structures against symmetric perturbations. We also studied the formation of the ring structure in theory and simulations. An evacuate…
We discuss the focusing effect experienced by a long relativistic proton bunch, when propagating in underdense plasma. We show with 2D quasi-static simulations that the response of the plasma to the presence of the bunch provides a focusing force for the protons. We discuss the impact of the finite transverse size of the plasma on the dynamics of the process and we introduce the measurements performed at the AWAKE experiment at CERN.
Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is used to investigate the witness proton acceleration in underdense plasma with a short intense Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser pulse. Driven by the LG10 laser pulse, a special bubble with an electron pillar on the axis is formed, in which protons can be well-confined by the generated transversal focusing field and accelerated by the longitudinal wakefield. The risk of scattering prior to acceleration with a Gaussian laser pulse in underdense plasma is avoided, and protons are accelerated stably to much higher energy. In simulation, a proton beam has…
It is shown that the requirements for high quality electron bunch generation and trapping from an underdense photocathode in plasma wakefield accelerators can be substantially relaxed through localizing it on a plasma density downramp. This depresses the phase velocity of the accelerating electric field until the generated electrons are in phase, allowing for trapping in shallow trapping potentials. As a consequence the underdense photocathode technique is applicable by a much larger number of accelerator facilities. Furthermore, dark current generation is effectively suppressed.

We report the experimental generation of highly energetic carbon ions up to 48 MeV per nucleon by shooting double-layer targets composed of well-controlled slightly underdense plasma (SUP) and ultrathin foils with ultra-intense femtosecond laser pulses. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal that carbon ions residing in the ultrathin foils undergo radiation pressure acceleration and long-time sheath field acceleration in sequence due to the existence of the SUP in front of the foils. Such an acceleration scheme is especially suited for heavy ion acceleration with femtosecond laser pulses. The bre…
The interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses with an underdense plasma is used in laser-plasma acceleration to create compact sources of ultrashort pulses of relativistic electrons and X-rays. The accelerating structure is a plasma wave, or wakefield, that is excited by the laser ponderomotive force, a force that is usually assumed to depend solely on the laser envelope and not on its exact waveform. Here, we use near-single-cycle laser pulses with a controlled carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) to show that the actual waveform of the laser field has a clear impact on the plasma response. We measur…
We investigate how next-generation laser pulses at 10 PW $-$ 200 PW interact with a solid target in the presence of a relativistically underdense preplasma produced by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Laser hole boring and relativistic transparency are strongly restrained due to the generation of electron-positron pairs and $γ$-ray photons via quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. A pair plasma with a density above the initial preplasma density is formed, counteracting the electron-free channel produced by the hole boring. This pair-dominated plasma can block the laser transport and tr…
It is generally believed that relativistically underdense plasma is transparent for intense laser radiation. However, particle-in-cell simulations reveal abnormal laser field absorption above the intensity threshold about~$3 \times 10^{24}~\mathrm{W}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ for the wavelength of $1~μ\mathrm{m}$. Above the threshold, the further increase of the laser intensity doesn't lead to the increase of the propagation distance. The simulations take into account emission of hard photons and subsequent pair photoproduction in the laser field. These effects lead to onset of a self-sustained elect…
Longitudinal ion acceleration from high-intensity (I ~ 10^20 Wcm^-2) laser interactions with helium gas jet targets (n_e ~ 0.04 n_c) have been observed. The ion beam has a maximum energy for He^2+ of approximately 40 MeV and was directional along the laser propagation path, with the highest energy ions being collimated to a cone of less than 10 degrees. 2D particle-in-cell simulations have been used to investigate the acceleration mechanism. The time varying magnetic field associated with the fast electron current provides a contribution to the accelerating electric field as well as providing …
The interaction of two laser pulses in an underdense plasma has proven to be able to inject electrons in plasma waves, thus providing a stable and tunable source of electrons. Whereas previous works focused on the "beatwave" injection scheme in which two lasers with the same polarization collide in a plasma, this present letter studies the effect of polarization and more specifically the interaction of two colliding cross-polarized laser pulses. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that electrons can also be pre-accelerated and injected by the stochastic heating occurring at the c…
Characterization of self-consistent laser-plasma evolutions serves as a fundamental issue in the field of relativistic laser-plasma interactions. In this paper, we present an analysis framework for description of these evolutions during propagation of a short intense laser pulse in a sub-critical high-density plasma (the pulse length exceeds the plasma wavelength). In this context, the pulse evolutions are attributed to the wakefield induced self-modulation and destabilization via parametric exponentiation of the initial noise content. The self-consistent plasma evolutions are formulated in te…
We report the first experimental observation of a long-wavelength hosing modulation of a high-intensity laser pulse. Side-view images of the scattered optical radiation at the fundamental wave-length of the laser reveal a transverse oscillation of the laser pulse during its propagation through underdense plasma. The wavelength of the oscillation λ_hosing depends on the background plasma density n_e and scales as λ_hosing~n_e^-3/2. Comparisons with an analytical model and 2-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reveal that this laser hosing can be induced by a spatio-temporal asymmetry of th…
An electron injector concept for laser-plasma accelerator was developed in ref [1] and [2] ; it relies on the use of counter-propagating ultrashort laser pulses. In [2], the scheme is as follows: the pump laser pulse generates a large amplitude laser wakefield (plasma wave). The counter-propagating injection pulse interferes with the pump laser pulse to generate a beatwave pattern. The ponderomotive force of the beatwave is able to inject plasma electrons into the wakefield. We have studied this injection scheme using 1D Particle in Cell (PIC) simulations. The simulations reveal phenomena and …
The excitation of wake waves by a relativistic homogeneous electron bunch passing through cold magnetized plasma at equilibrium is studied for arbitrary values of the ratio of bunch density to plasma density. The analysis is based on the assumption that the magnetic field is sufficiently strong ($ω_B\gg ω_p$, where $ω_p$ and $ω_B$ are the electron plasma and cyclotron frequences respectively). The periodic and nonperiodic solutions for the momentum of plasma electrons inside and outside the bunch are analyzed. It was shown that the presence of strong external magnetic field may increase the am…
Analytic model of stable shock-like structures in laser interaction with underdense plasma for identifying of phase and polarization dependent regime of laser wakefield accelerators
A case of moving one-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) solitons formed in a relativistic interaction of a linearly polarized laser light with underdense cold plasma is investigated. The relativistic Lorentz force in an intense laser light pushes electrons into longitudinal motion generating coupled longitudal-transverse wave modes. In a weakly relativistic approximation these modes are well described by a dynamical equation of the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger type, with two additional nonlocal terms [1]. An original analytical solution for a moving EM soliton case is here calculated in an …
Magnetic reconnection is a universal process that powers explosive energy release events such as solar flares, geomagnetic substorms, and some astrophysical jets. A characteristic feature of magnetic reconnection is the production of fast reconnection outflow jets near the plasma Alfvén speeds. In eruptive solar flares, dark, finger-shaped plasma downflows moving toward the flare arcade have been commonly regarded as the principal observational evidence for such reconnection-driven outflows. However, they often show a speed much slower than that expected in reconnection theories, challenging t…
The filamentation instability of the electromagnetic (EM) beam in an underdense plasma with high level of degeneracy is examined by means of the momentum equation, continuity equation and Maxwell's equations. It has been demonstrated that the instability develops for weakly as well as strongly relativistic degenerate plasma and arbitrary strong amplitude of EM beams.
The interaction of high intensity laser radiation with mass-limited target exhibits significant enhancement of the ion acceleration when the target is surrounded by an underdense plasma corona, as seen in numerical simulations. The self-generated quasistatic magnetic field squeezes the corona causing the intensification of a subsequent Coulomb explosion of the target. The electric field intensification at the target edges and plasma resonance effects result in the generation of characteristic density holes and further contributes to the ion acceleration. The interaction of high intensity laser …
Tightly focused laser pulses as they diverge or converge in underdense plasma can generate wake waves, having local structures that are spherical waves. Here we report on theoretical study of relativistic spherical wake waves and their properties, including wave breaking. These waves may be suitable as particle injectors or as flying mirrors that both reflect and focus radiation, enabling unique X-ray sources and nonlinear QED phenomena.
The existence of standing high frequency electromagnetic (EM) solitons in a fully degenerate overdense electron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamics and Maxwell equations. The stable soliton solutions are found in both relativistic and nonrelativistic degenerate plasmas.
The existence of soliton-like electromagnetic (EM) distributions in a fully degenerate electron-positron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations. For circularly polarized wave it is found that the soliton solutions exist both in relativistic as well as nonrelativistic degenerate plasmas. Plasma density in the region of soliton pulse localization is reduced considerably. The possibility of plasma cavitation is also shown.
We investigate the existence of envelope soliton solutions in collisionless quantum plasmas, using the quantum-corrected Zakharov equations in the kinetic case, which describes the interaction between high frequency Langmuir waves and low frequency plasma density variations. We show the role played by quantum effects in the nonlinearity/dispersion balance leading to the formation of soliton solutions of the quantum-corrected nonlinear Schrodinger (QNLS) equation.
Propagation of Langmuir solitons in inhomogeneous plasmas is investigated numerically. Through numerical simulation solving Zakharov equations, the solitons are accelerated toward the low density side. As a consequence, isolated cavities moving at ion sound velocities are emitted. When the acceleration is further increased, solitons collapse and the cavities separate into two lumps released at ion sound velocities. The threshold is estimated by an analogy between the soliton and a particle overcoming the self-generated potential well.
It is well known that when a short laser pulse propagates in an underdense plasma, it induces longitudinal plasma oscillations at the plasma frequency after the pulse, typically referred to as the 'wakefield'. However, for plasma densities approaching the critical density wakefield generation is suppressed, and instead the EM-pulse undergoes nonlinear self-modulation. In this article we have studied the transition from the wakefield generation to formation of quasi-solitons as the plasma density is increased. For this purpose we have applied a one dimensional (1D) relativistic cold fluid model…
The interaction of high intensity laser radiation with underdense plasma may lead to the formation of electron vortices. Though being quasistationary on an electron timescales, these structures tend to expand on a proton timescale due to Coloumb repulsion of ions. Using a simple analytical model of a stationary vortex as initial condition, 2D PIC simulations are performed. A number of effects are observed such as vortex boundary field intensification, multistream instabilities at the vortex boundary, and bending of the vortex boundary with the subsequent transformation into smaller electron vo…
We present a new approach for investigating quantum effects in laser-driven plasma. Unlike the modelling strategies underpinning particle-in-cell codes that include the effects of quantum electrodynamics, our new field theory incorporates multi-particle effects from the outset. Our approach is based on the path-integral quantisation of a classical bi-scalar field theory describing the behaviour of a laser pulse propagating through an underdense plasma. Results established in the context of quantum field theory on curved spacetime are used to derive a non-linear, non-local, effective field theo…
The passage of a magnetosonic (MS) soliton in a cold plasma leads to the displacement of charged particles in the direction of a compressive pulse and in the opposite direction of a rarefaction pulse. In the overdense plasma limit, the displacement induced by a weakly nonlinear MS soliton is derived analytically. This result is then used to derive an asymptotic expansion for the displacement resulting from the bouncing motion of a MS soliton reflected back and forth in a vacuum-bounded cold plasma slab. Particles' displacement after the pulse energy has been lost to the vacuum region is shown …
We present the results of 3-dimensional kinetic simulations and theoretical studies on the formation and evolution of the current sheet in a collisionless plasma during magnetic field annihilation in the ultra-relativistic limit. Annihilation of oppositively directed magnetic fields driven by two laser pulses interacting with underdense plasma target is accompanied by an electromagnetic burst generation. The induced strong non-stationary longitudinal electric field accelerates charged particles within the current sheet. Properties of the laser-plasma target configuration are discussed in the c…
The dynamics of the ultra-intense circularly polarized solitons under inhomogeneous plasmas are examined. The interaction is modeled by the Maxwell and relativistic hydrodynamic equations and is solved with fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. It is shown that a propagating weak soliton can be decreased and reflected by increasing plasma background, which is consistent with the existing studies based on hypothesis of weak density response. However it is found that ultra-intense soliton is well trapped and kept still when encountering increasing background. Probably, this founding…
The evolution of electromagnetic (EM) solitons due to nonlinear coupling of circularly polarized intense laser pulses with low-frequency electron-acoustic perturbations is studied in relativistic degenerate dense astrophysical plasmas with two groups of electrons: a sparse population of classical relativistic electrons and a dense population of relativistic degenerate electron gas. Different forms of localized stationary solutions are obtained and their properties are analyzed. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion, the conditions for the existence and stability of a moving EM solit…
The existence of localized electromagnetic structures is discussed in the framework of the 1-dimensional relativistic Maxwell-fluid model for a cold plasma with immobile ions. New partially localized solutions are found with a finite-difference algorithm designed to locate numerically exact solutions of the Maxwell-fluid system. These solutions are called quasi-solitons and consist of a localized electromagnetic wave trapped in a spatially extended electron plasma wave. They are organized in families characterized by the number of nodes $p$ of the vector potential and exist in a continuous ran…
The existence of magnetosonic solitons in dusty plasmas is investigated. The nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic equations for a warm dusty magnetoplasma are thus derived. A solution of the nonlinear equations is presented. It is shown that, due to the presence of dust, static structures are allowed. This is in sharp contrast to the formation of the so called shocklets in usual magnetoplasmas. A comparatively small number of dust particles can thus drastically alter the behavior of the nonlinear structures in magnetized plasmas.
The propagation characteristics and interactions between the dust acoustic (DA) one and multi solitons in an unmagnetized dusty plasmas composing negatively charged mobile dust, Boltzmann distributed electrons, nonextensive distributed cold and nonthermal distributed hot ions are studied. The well known extended Poincar Lighthill Kuo (PLK) method is employed to derive the two sided Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equations. The solutions of KdV equations are constructed using the Hirota method both for one and multi solitons. The phase shifts are determined for the interaction of one, two and three DA…
We study the evolution of nonlinear ion acoustic wave excitations due to a moving charged source in a plasma. Our numerical investigations of the full set of cold fluid equations goes beyond the usual weak nonlinearity approximation and shows the existence of a rich variety of solutions including wakes, precursor solitons and pinned solitons that travel with the source velocity. These solutions represent a large amplitude generalization of solutions obtained in the past for the forced Korteweg deVries equation and can find useful applications in a variety of situations in the laboratory and in…
