We report an accurate measurement of the recoil velocity of Rb atoms based on Bloch oscillations in a vertical accelerated optical lattice. We transfer about 900 recoil momenta with an efficiency of 99.97 % per recoil. A set of 72 measurements of the recoil velocity, each one with a relative uncertainty of about 33 ppb in 20 min integration time, leads to a determination of the fine structure constant alpha with a statistical relative uncertainty of 4.4 ppb. The detailed analysis of the different systematic errors yields to a relative uncertainty of 6.7 ppb. The deduced value of 1/alpha is 137.03599878(91).
We use Bloch oscillations in a horizontal moving standing wave to transfer a large number of photon recoils to atoms with a high efficiency (99.5% per cycle). By measuring the photon recoil of $^{87}Rb$, using velocity selective Raman transitions to select a subrecoil velocity class and to measure the final accelerated velocity class, we have determined $h/m_{Rb}$ with a relative precision of 0.4 ppm. To exploit the high momentum transfer efficiency of our method, we are developing a vertical standing wave set-up. This will allow us to measure $h/m_{Rb}$ better than $10^{-8}$ and hence the fin…
An obvious determination of the acceleration of gravity g can be deduced from the measurement of the velocity of falling atoms using a pi-pi pulses sequence of stimulated Raman transitions. By using a vertical standing wave to hold atoms against gravity, we expect to improve the relative accuracy by increasing the upholding time in the gravity field and to minimize the systematic errors induced by inhomogeneous fields, owing to the very small spatial amplitude of the atomic center-of-mass wavepacket periodic motion. We also propose to use such an experimental setup nearby a Watt balance. By ex…
We report on a trapped atom interferometer based on Bragg diffraction and Bloch oscillations with alkaline-earth-metal atoms. We use a Ramsey-Bordé Bragg interferometer with $^{88}$Sr atoms combined with Bloch oscillations to extend the interferometer time. Thanks to a long coherence time for Bloch oscillations of $^{88}$Sr atoms, we observed interference up to 1 s evolution time in the lattice. A detailed study of decoherence sources during the Bloch phase is also presented. While still limited in sensitivity by lattice lifetime and beam inhomogeneity this result opens the way to high contras…
We report the direct observation and characterization of position-space Bloch oscillations using an ultracold gas in a tilted optical lattice. While Bloch oscillations in momentum space are a common feature of optical lattice experiments, the real-space center-of-mass dynamics are typically too small to resolve. Tuning into the regime of rapid tunneling and weak force, we observe real-space Bloch oscillation amplitudes of hundreds of lattice sites, in both ground and excited bands. We demonstrate two unique capabilities enabled by tracking of Bloch dynamics in position space: measurement of th…
We simulate and analyze an experimental method of loading interacting ultracold atoms onto nontrivial quantum states such as nonlinear Bloch wave and soliton solutions in a 1-dimensional bichromatic lattice. Of standard bands, inverted bands, and bands with Dirac-like points permitted by a bichromatic lattice, we consider the case of an inverted band and examine the loading process in terms of nonlinear Bloch waves formed by an aggregate of ultracold atoms described by the mean-field model. Specifically, we solved the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically and found an appropriate standing wave…
The standard Bloch oscillation normally refers to the oscillatory tunneling dynamics of quantum particles in a periodic lattice plus a linear gradient. In this work we theoretically investigate the generalized form of the Bloch oscillation in the presence of additional higher order gradients, and demonstrate that the higher order gradients can significantly modify the tunneling dynamics, particularly in the spectrum of the density oscillation. The spectrum of the standard Bloch oscillation is composed of a single prime frequency and its higher harmonics, while the higher-order gradients in the…
We report new measurements and simulations of laser-induced fluorescence in ultracold neutral plasmas. We focus on the earliest times, when the plasma equilibrium is evolving and before the plasma expands. In the simulation, the ions interact via the Yukawa potential in a small cell with wrapped boundary conditions. We solve the optical Bloch equation for each ion in the simulation as a function of time. Both the simulation and experiment show the initial Bloch vector rotation, disorder-induced heating, and coherent oscillation of the rms ion velocity. Detailed modeling of the fluorescence sig…
We apply a Bloch-bands approach to the analysis of pulsed optical standing wave diffractive elements in optics and interferometry with ultracold atoms. We verify our method by comparison to a series of experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates. The approach provides accurate Rabi frequencies for diffraction pulses and is particularly useful for the analysis and control of diffraction phases, an important systematic effect in precision atom interferometry. Utilizing this picture, we also demonstrate a method to determine atomic band structure in an optical lattice through a measurement of phas…
We have realized a two dimensional permanent magnetic lattice of Ioffe-Pritchard microtraps for ultracold atoms. The lattice is formed by a single 300 nm magnetized layer of FePt, patterned using optical lithography. Our magnetic lattice consists of more than 15000 tightly confining microtraps with a density of 1250 traps/mm$^2$. Simple analytical approximations for the magnetic fields produced by the lattice are used to derive relevant trap parameters. We load ultracold atoms into at least 30 lattice sites at a distance of approximately 10 $μ$m from the film surface. The present result is an …
We propose a precision measurement of time variations of the proton-electron mass ratio using ultracold molecules in an optical lattice. Vibrational energy intervals are sensitive to changes of the mass ratio. In contrast to measurements that use hyperfine-interval-based atomic clocks, the scheme discussed here is model-independent and does not require separation of time variations of different physical constants. The possibility of applying the zero-differential-Stark-shift optical lattice technique is explored to measure vibrational transitions at high accuracy.
We report on the use of an ultracold ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms trapped in a vertical lattice as a source for a quantum force sensor based on a Ramsey-Raman type interferometer. We reach spatial resolution in the low micrometer range in the vertical direction thanks to evaporative cooling down to ultracold temperatures in a crossed optical dipole trap. In this configuration, the coherence time of the atomic ensemble is degraded by inhomogeneous dephasing arising from atomic interactions. By weakening the confinement in the transverse direction only, we dilute the cloud and drastically reduce …
We study self-trapped localized nonlinear states in the form of truncated Bloch waves in one-dimensional optical lattices, which appear in the gaps of the linear bandgap spectrum. We demonstrate the existence of families of such localized states which differ by the number of intensity peaks. These families do not bifurcate from the band edge, and their power curves exhibit double branches. Linear stability analysis demonstrates that in deep lattice potentials the states corresponding to the lower branches are stable, whereas those corresponding to the upper branches are unstable, independently…
We report on the loading and trapping of ultracold atoms in a one dimensional permanent magnetic lattice of period 10 micron produced on an atom chip. The grooved structure which generates the magnetic lattice potential is fabricated on a silicon substrate and coated with a perpendicularly magnetized multilayered TbGdFeCo/Cr film of effective thickness 960 nm. Ultracold atoms are evaporatively cooled in a Z-wire magnetic trap and then adiabatically transferred to the magnetic lattice potential by applying an appropriate bias field. Under our experimental conditions trap frequencies of up to 90…
We report on observing photon recoil effects in the absorption of a single monochromatic light at 689~nm through an ultracold $^{88}$Sr gas, where the recoil frequency is comparable to natural linewidth of the narrow-line transition $5\mathrm{s^2}\, ^1\textrm{S}_0 - 5\mathrm{s}5\mathrm{p}\, ^3\textrm{P}_1$ in strontium. In the regime of high-saturation, the absorption profile becomes asymmetric due to the photon-recoil shift, which is of the same order as the natural linewidth. The lineshape is described by an extension of the optical Bloch equations including the momentum transfers to atoms d…
We develop a theoretical approach for the dynamics of Rydberg excitations in ultracold gases, with a realistically large number of atoms. We rely on the reduction of the single-atom Bloch equations to rate equations, which is possible under various experimentally relevant conditions. Here, we explicitly refer to a two-step excitation-scheme. We discuss the conditions under which our approach is valid by comparing the results with the solution of the exact quantum master equation for two interacting atoms. Concerning the emergence of an excitation blockade in a Rydberg gas, our results are in q…
We provide a one-to-one map between the spin correlations and certain three-dimensional shapes, analogous to the map between single spins and Bloch vectors, and demonstrate its utility. Much as one can reason geometrically about dynamics using a Bloch vector -- e.g. a magnetic field causes it to precess and dissipation causes it to shrink -- one can reason similarly about the shapes we use to visualize correlations. This visualization demonstrates its usefulness by unveiling the hidden structure in the correlations. For example, seemingly complex correlation dynamics can be described as simple…
Ultracold atoms in optical lattices are a powerful tool for quantum simulation, precise measurement, and quantum computation. A fundamental problem in applying this quantum system is how to manipulate the higher bands or orbitals in Bloch states effectively. Here we mainly review our methods for manipulating high orbital ultracold atoms in optical lattices with different configurations. Based on these methods, we construct the atom-orbital qubit under nonadiabatic holonomic quantum control and Ramsey interferometry with trapped motional quantum states. Then we review the observation of the nov…
Non-Abelian and non-adiabatic variants of Berry's geometric phase have been pivotal in the recent advances in fault tolerant quantum computation gates, while Berry's phase itself is at the heart of the study of topological phases of matter. The geometrical and topological properties of the phase space of spin$-1$ quantum states is richer than that of spin$-1/2$ quantum states and is relatively unexplored. For instance, the spin vector of a spin-1 system, unlike that of a spin$-1/2$ system, can lie anywhere on or inside the Bloch sphere representing the phase space. Recently, a generalization o…
We investigate the waveguiding properties of the optical interference pattern of two counter-propagating Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The number, helicity, radius, pitch, depth and frequencies of transverse confinement of the waveguides are simply related to the beam parameters. Quantitative connections to the familiar Gaussian optical lattice are made and an application to quantum transport is suggested.
We investigate static properties of laser-driven, ultracold Rydberg atoms confined to one- and two-dimensional uniform lattices in the limit of vanishing laser coupling. The spectral structure of square lattices is compared to those of linear chains and similarities as well as differences are pointed out. Furthermore, we employ a method based on elements of graph theory to numerically determine the laser detuning-dependent ground states of various lattice geometries. Ground states for chains as well as square and rectangular lattices are provided and discussed.
We demonstrate the optical generation of dynamic dark optical ring lattices, which do not require Laguerre-Gauss beams, large optical coherence lengths or interferometric stability. Simple control signals lead to spatial modulation and reproducible rotation, offering manifold possibilities for complex dynamic ring lattices. In conjunction with a magnetic trap, these scanned 2D intensity distributions from a single laser beam will enable precision trapping and manipulation of ultracold species using blue-detuned light. The technique is ideal for azimuthal ratchet, Mott insulator and persistent …
This article reviews the development in our laboratory of magnetic lattices comprising periodic arrays of magnetic microtraps created by patterned magnetic films to trap periodic arrays of ultracold atoms. Recent achievements include the realisation of multiple Bose-Einstein condensates in a 10 micron-period one-dimensional magnetic lattice; the fabrication of sub-micron-period square and triangular magnetic lattice structures suitable for quantum tunnelling experiments; the trapping of ultracold atoms in a sub-micron-period triangular magnetic lattice; and a proposal to use long-range interac…
We investigate the spectral properties of a finite laser-driven lattice of ultracold Rydberg atoms exploiting the dipole blockade effect in the frozen Rydberg gas regime. Uniform one-dimensional lattices as well as lattices with variable spacings are considered. In the case of a weak laser coupling, we find a multitude of many-body Rydberg states with well-defined excitation properties which are adiabatically accessible starting from the ground state. A comprehensive analysis of the degeneracies of the spectrum as well as of the single and pair excitations numbers of the eigenstates is perform…
A theoretical approach is described for an exact numerical treatment of a pair of ultracold atoms interacting via a central potential that are trapped in a finite three-dimensional optical lattice. The coupling of center-of-mass and relative-motion coordinates is treated using an exact diagonalization (configuration-interaction) approach. The orthorhombic symmetry of an optical lattice with three different but orthogonal lattice vectors is explicitly considered as is the Fermionic or Bosonic symmetry in the case of indistinguishable particles.
We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC, superfluidity) of particle-hole pairs in ultracold Fermionic atoms with repulsive interactionsand arbitrary polarization, which are trapped within optical lattices. Near a Feshbach resonance, the dynamics of particle-hole pairs can be described by a hard-core Bose-Hubbard model. The insulator - superfluid and charge-density-wave (CDW) - superfluid phase transitions can be induced by decreasing and increasing the potential depths with controlling the trapping laser intensity, respectively. The parameter and polarization dependence of the criti…
We present a general model allowing "quantum simulation" of one-dimensional Dirac models with 2- and 4-component spinors using ultracold atoms in driven 1D tilted optical latices. The resulting Dirac physics is illustrated by one of its well-known manifestations, Zitterbewegung. This general model can be extended and applied with great flexibility to more complex situations.
We analyze the optomechanics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with the optical lattice inside a laser-pumped optical cavity and subject to a uniform bias force such as gravity. An atomic wave packet in a tilted lattice undergoes Bloch oscillations; in a cavity the backaction of the atoms on the light leads to a time-dependent modulation of the intracavity lattice at the Bloch frequency. When the Bloch frequency is on the order of the cavity damping rate we find transport of the atoms either up or down the lattice. The transport dynamics can be interpreted as a manifestation of…
We study the effects of high optical depth and density on the performance of a light-atom quantum interface. An in-situ imaging method, a dual-port polarization contrast technique, is presented. This technique is able to compensate for image distortions due to refraction. We propose our imaging method as a tool to characterize atomic ensembles for high capacity spatial multimode quantum memories. Ultracold dense inhomogeneous Rubidium samples are imaged and we find a resonant optical depth as high as 680 on the D1 line. The measurements are compared with light-atom interaction models based on …
Spectroscopic tools are fundamental for the understanding of complex quantum systems. Here we demonstrate high-precision multi-band spectroscopy in a graphene-like lattice using ultracold fermionic atoms. From the measured band structure, we characterize the underlying lattice potential with a relative error of 1.2 10^(-3). Such a precise characterization of complex lattice potentials is an important step towards precision measurements of quantum many-body systems. Furthermore, we explain the excitation strengths into the different bands with a model and experimentally study their dependency o…
We show that Zeeman excitations of ultracold Dy atoms trapped in an optical lattice can be used to engineer extended Hubbard models with tunable inter-site and particle number-non-conserving interactions. We show that the ratio of the hopping amplitude and inter-site interactions in these lattice models can be tuned in a wide range by transferring the atoms to different Zeeman states. We propose to use the resulting controllable models for the study of the effects of direct particle interactions and particle number-non-conserving terms on Anderson localization.
The study of ultracold molecules tightly trapped in an optical lattice can expand the frontier of precision measurement and spectroscopy, and provide a deeper insight into molecular and fundamental physics. Here we create, probe, and image microkelvin $^{88}$Sr$_2$ molecules in a lattice, and demonstrate precise measurements of molecular parameters as well as coherent control of molecular quantum states using optical fields. We discuss the sensitivity of the system to dimensional effects, a new bound-to-continuum spectroscopy technique for highly accurate binding energy measurements, and prosp…
Ultracold atoms loaded on optical lattices can provide unprecedented experimental systems for the quantum simulations and manipulations of many quantum phases. However, so far, how to detect these quantum phases effectively remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we show that the optical Bragg scattering of cold atoms loaded on optical lattices can be used to detect many quantum phases which include not only the conventional superfluid and Mott insulating phases, but also other important phases such as various kinds of density waves (CDW), valence bond solids (VBS), CDW supersolids and VBS sup…
The extended effective multiorbital Bose-Hubbard-type Hamiltonian which takes into account higher Bloch bands, is discussed for boson systems in optical lattices, with emphasis on dynamical properties, in relation with current experiments. It is shown that the renormalization of Hamiltonian parameters depends on the dimension of the problem studied. Therefore, mean field phase diagrams do not scale with the coordination number of the lattice. The effect of Hamiltonian parameters renormalization on the dynamics in reduced one-dimensional optical lattice potential is analyzed. We study both the …
A protocol is proposed for the rapid coherent loading of a Bose-Einstein condensate into the ground state of an optical lattice, without residual excitation associated with the breakdown of adiabaticity. The driving potential required to assist the rapid loading is derived using the fast forward technique, and generates the ground state in any desired short time. We propose an experimentally feasible loading scheme using a bichromatic lattice potential, which approximates the fast-forward driving potential with high fidelity.
We report on an experimental study of the dynamics of the reflection of ultracold atoms from a periodic one-dimensional magnetic lattice potential. The magnetic lattice potential of period 10 \textmu m is generated by applying a uniform bias magnetic field to a microfabricated periodic structure on a silicon wafer coated with a multilayered TbGdFeCo/Cr magneto-optical film. The effective thickness of the magnetic film is about 960 nm. A detailed study of the profile of the reflected atoms as a function of externally induced periodic corrugation in the potential is described. The effect of angl…
