The ion sphere model introduced long ago by Salpeter is placed in a rigorous theoretical setting. The leading corrections to this model for very highly charged but dilute ions in thermal equilibrium with a weakly coupled, one-component background plasma are explicitly computed, and the subleading corrections are shown to be negligibly small. Such analytic results for very strong coupling are rarely available, and they can serve as benchmarks for testing computer models in this limit.
The ion sphere model introduced long ago by Salpeter is placed in a rigorous theoretical setting. The leading corrections to this model for very highly charged but dilute ions in thermal equilibrium with a weakly coupled, one-component background plasma are explicitly computed, and the subleading corrections shown to be negligibly small. This is done using effective field theory methods advocated by Brown and Yaffe. Thus, corrections to nuclear reaction rates that such highly charged ions may undergo can be computed precisely. Moreover, their contribution to the equation of state can also be c…
The disassembly of molecular clusters $(N_2)_n$ ($n$=50-3000) in strong optical fields is investigated using two-dimensional time-of-flight spectrometry. Very highly charged ions are formed with a two-component energy distribution. A low-energy, isotropic component correlates with Coulomb explosion. A high-energy, anisotropic component, that results from a ``charge flipping" acceleration mechanism, gives rise to ions with energies in excess of the Coulombic limit.
Weakly collisional Ar-O2 electronegative plasmas are investigated in a dc multidipole chamber. An electronegative core and an electropositive halo are observed. The density ratio of negative ions to electrons (α) in the nondrifting bulk is found to be 0.43. The profile of α is found using both the phase velocity of ion acoustic waves and the drift velocity of positive ions determined by laser induced fluorescence. The experiment shows that negative ions are in Boltzmann equilibrium with a temperature of 0.06 \pm 0.02 eV. Double layers are not found separating the electronegative core and the e…
It is proposed to produce the highly charged ions in the local ion trap formed by a rippling electron beam in the focusing magnetic field. The experimental results demonstrate the presence of iridium ions with charges up to 50+. According to estimates, the average electron current density in the local ion trap can reach the value of the order of 10 kA/cm^2. The pilot examples of devices of this type with the electron beam energies within the range 3-10 keV are also presented.
We found 12 unknown visible emission lines from the core plasma of large helical device with highly charged tungsten ions accumulated. The observation was made with our home-built echelle spectrometer, which covers the wavelength range of 450-715 nm with a wavelength resolution of<0.05 nm for two lines of sight; one line passes both the core and edge plasmas and the other passes only the edge plasma. These emission lines are attributed to highly charged tungsten ions because (1) they were observed only after a tungsten pellet was injected into the plasma, (2) they were observed only from the c…
Past and ongoing research activities at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage-ring TSR are reviewed which aim at providing accurate absolute rate coefficients and cross sections of atomic collision processes for applications in astrophysics and magnetically confined fusion. In particular, dielectronic recombination and electron impact ionization of iron ions are discussed as well as dielectronic recombination of tungsten ions.
We study the time-dependent neutralization of a slow highly charged ion that penetrates a hexagonal hollow-centred graphene nanoflake. To compute the ultrafast charge transfer dynamics, we apply an effective Hubbard nanocluster model and use the method of nonequilibrium Green functions (NEGF) in conjunction with an embedding self-energy scheme which allows one to follow the temporal changes of the number of electrons in the nanoflake. We perform extensive simulations of the charge transfer dynamics for a broad range of ion charge states and impact velocities. The results are used to put forwar…
We analyse the bound states of negatively charged ions which were predicted to exist because of the presence of a magnetic field by Avron et al. We confirm that the number of such states is infinite in the approximation of an infinitely heavy nucleus and provide insight into the underlying physical picture by means of a combined adiabatic and perturbation theoretical approach. We also calculate the corresponding binding energies which are qualitatively different for the states with vanishing and non-vanishing angular momentum. An outlook on the case of including center of mass effects is prese…
We report the first measurements and detailed analysis of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra (4 nm to 20 nm) of highly-charged tungsten ions W$^{54+}$ to W$^{63+}$ obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Collisional-radiative modelling is used to identify strong electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions in all ionization stages. These lines can be used for impurity transport studies and temperature diagnostics in fusion reactors, such as ITER. Identifications of prominent lines from several W ions were confirmed by measurement of isoelectronic EUV spectra of Hf, Ta, and Au. We als…
Zhang and coworkers have recently reported results of experiments involving irradiation of argon clusters doped with bromofluorene chromophores by nanosecond-long pulses of 532 nm laser light. Multiply-charged ions of atomic argon (charge states, n, up to 7) and carbon (charge states up to 4) are observed which are sought to be rationalised using an evaporation model. The distinguishing facet of exploding clusters being progenitors of energetic ions and electrons constitutes the key driver for contemporary research in laser-cluster interactions; it is, therefore, important to point out inconsi…
We demonstrated a polarization-resolved high resolution spectroscopy of a visible emission line of highly charged tungsten ions (λ0 = 668.899 nm, Shinohara et al Phys. Scr. 90 125402) for the large helical device (LHD) plasma, where the tungsten ions were introduced by a pellet injection. Its spectral profile shows broadening and polarization dependence, which are attributed to the Doppler and Zeeman effects, respectively. The tungsten ion temperature was evaluated for the first time from the broadening of visible the emission line, with its emission location determined by the Abel inversion o…
A systematic numerical study of wake potential and ion density distribution of a single grain in streaming ions under the influence of the magnetic field applied along flow is presented. Strong magnetic field introduces ion focus depletion behind grain facilitating the entrance of electrons far away in the downstream towards the grain. It is shown that the magnetic field suppresses the amplitude of wake potential and modifies the ion density distribution substantially. The wake peak potential and position characteristics, and density distribution of plasma constituents in the presence of magne…
A new one-dimensional fluid model for ions in weakly-ionized plasma is proposed. The model differs from the existing ones in two aspects. First, a more accurate approximation of the collision terms in the fluid equations is suggested. For this purpose, the results obtained using the Monte-Carlo kinetic model of the ion swarm experiments are considered. Second, the ion energy equation is taken into account. The fluid equations are closed using a simple model of the ion velocity distribution function. The accuracy of the fluid model is examined by comparing with the results of particle-in-cell/M…
Theoretical and experimental resonance strengths for KLL dielectronic recombination (DR) into He-, Li-, Be-, and B-like mercury ions are presented, based on state-resolved DR x-ray spectra recorded at the Heidelberg electron beam ion trap. The DR resonance strengths were experimentally extracted by normalizing them to simultaneously recorded radiative recombination signals. The results are compared to state-of-the-art atomic calculations that include relativistic electron-electron correlation and configuration mixing effects. Combining the present data with other existing ones, we derive an im…
In this paper we present a concise overview of our recent results concerning the electric potential distribution around a small charged particle in weakly ionized plasmas. A number of different effects which influence plasma screening properties are considered. Some consequences of the results are discussed, mostly in the context of complex (dusty) plasmas.
We analyze atomic structures of plasma embedded aluminum (Al) atom and its ions in the weakly and strongly coupling regimes. The plasma screening effects in these atomic systems are accounted for using the Debye and ion sphere (IS) potentials for the weakly coupling and strongly coupling plasmas, respectively. Within the Debye model, special attention is given to investigate the spherical and non-spherical plasma-screening effects considering in the electron-electron interaction potential. The relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) method has been employed to describe the relativistic and electron…
Metal vapour vacuum arcs are capable to generate multiply charged metallic ions, which are widely used in fields such as ion deposition, ion thrusters, and ion sources, etc. According to the stationary model of cathode spot, those ions are generated by electron-impact single ionization in a step-wise manner, which is M -> M+ -> M2+ -> ... mainly. This paper is designed to study quantitatively the role of double ionization M -> M2+ in the breakdown initiation of copper vacuum arcs. A direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) scheme of double ionization is proposed and incorporated into a 2D particle…
Hyperfine-structures of highly charged ions (HCIs) are favourable spectroscopic targets for exploring fundamental physics as well as nuclear properties. Recent proposals of HCI atomic clocks highlight their importance, especially for many-electron HCIs, and they have been theoretically investigated by refining atomic-structure calculations. Nonetheless, no established spectroscopic method is currently available to verify these theoretical calculations. Here, we demonstrate hyperfine-structure-resolved laser spectroscopy of HCIs in an electron beam ion trap plasma, employing the magnetic-dipole…
In this work, dynamics of multi-charged ions emitted from an aluminum plasma produced by Q switched Nd: Yag laser is studied using time of flight (TOF) measurements from Langmuir Probe (LP) and spectroscopy (STOF) under Ar ambient of 0.02 mbar. The temporal evolution of multi-charged ions, background neutrals and ions is systematically studied for varying laser intensities. The temporal evolution shows all the species have double peak structure for all the laser intensities considered in the study. The fast peak is sharp whereas the slow peak is broad similar to that observed in previous studi…
We study the diffusion of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law kappa-distributions and without magnetic field. The electrons and ions have different kappa-parameters. We obtain the expressions of both diffusion and mobility coefficients of electrons and ions respectively in the plasma. We find that these new transport coefficient formulae depend strongly on the kappa-parameters in the power-law distributed plasma. When we take kappa to be infinite, these formulae reduce to the classical forms in the weakly ionized plasma with a Maxwellian distribution.

In the past three decades, the development of nuclear physics facilities for fundamental and applied science purposes has required an increasing current of multicharged ion beams. Multiple ionization implies the formation of dense and energetic plasmas, which, in turn, requires specific plasma trapping configurations. Two types of ion source have been able to produce very high charge states in a reliable and reproducible way: electron beam ion sources (EBIS) and electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS). Multiple ionization is also obtained in laser-generated plasmas (laser ion sources …
It is proposed that the rapid observed homogeneous nucleation of ice dust in a cold, weakly-ionized plasma depends on the formation of hydroxide (OH$^-$) by fast electrons impacting water molecules. These OH$^{-}$ ions attract neutral water molecules because of the high dipole moment of the water molecules and so hydrates of the form (OH)$^{-}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{n}$ are formed. The hydrates continuously grow in the cold environment to become macroscopic ice grains. These ice grains are negatively charged as a result of electron impact and so continue to attract water molecules. Because hydroxide is …
We report linear polarization measurements of x rays emitted due to dielectronic recombination into highly charged krypton ions. The ions in the He-like through O-like charge states were populated in an electron beam ion trap with the electron beam energy adjusted to recombination resonances in order to produce $Kα$ x rays. The x rays were detected with a newly developed Compton polarimeter using a beryllium scattering target and 12 silicon x-ray detector diodes sampling the azimuthal distribution of the scattered x rays. The extracted degrees of linear polarization of several dielectronic rec…
Precision spectroscopy of atomic systems is an invaluable tool for the advancement of our understanding of fundamental interactions and symmetries. Recently, highly charged ions (HCI) have been proposed for sensitive tests of physics beyond the Standard Model and as candidates for high-accuracy atomic clocks. However, the implementation of these ideas has been hindered by the parts-per-million level spectroscopic accuracies achieved to date. Here, we cool a trapped HCI to the lowest reported temperatures, and introduce coherent laser spectroscopy on HCI with an eight orders of magnitude leap i…
