We demonstrated a polarization-resolved high resolution spectroscopy of a visible emission line of highly charged tungsten ions (λ0 = 668.899 nm, Shinohara et al Phys. Scr. 90 125402) for the large helical device (LHD) plasma, where the tungsten ions were introduced by a pellet injection. Its spectral profile shows broadening and polarization dependence, which are attributed to the Doppler and Zeeman effects, respectively. The tungsten ion temperature was evaluated for the first time from the broadening of visible the emission line, with its emission location determined by the Abel inversion of the chord-integrated emission intensities observed with multiple chords. The tungsten ion temperature was found to be close to the helium-like argon ion temperature, which is used as an ion temperature monitor in LHD
We found 12 unknown visible emission lines from the core plasma of large helical device with highly charged tungsten ions accumulated. The observation was made with our home-built echelle spectrometer, which covers the wavelength range of 450-715 nm with a wavelength resolution of<0.05 nm for two lines of sight; one line passes both the core and edge plasmas and the other passes only the edge plasma. These emission lines are attributed to highly charged tungsten ions because (1) they were observed only after a tungsten pellet was injected into the plasma, (2) they were observed only from the c…
The experimental thermonuclear reactor, ITER, is currently being constructed in Cadarache, France. The reactor vessel will be constructred with a beryllium coated wall, and a tungsten coated divertor. As a plasma-facing component, the divertor will be under conditions of extreme temperature, resulting in the sputtering of tungsten impurities into the main body plasma. Modelling and understanding the potential cooling effects of these impurities requires detailed collisional-radiative modelling. These models require a wealth of atomic data for the various atomic species in the plasma. In partic…
Energy levels, wavelengths, magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole transition rates between the low-lying states are evaluated for W$^{51+}$ to W$^{54+}$ ions with $3d^n$ (n = 2 to 5) electronic configurations using an approach combining configuration interaction with linearized coupled-cluster single-double method. The QED corrections are directly incorporated into the calculations and their effect is studied in detail. Uncertainties of the calculations are discussed. This first study of such highly charged ions with the present method opens the way for future applications allowing an accura…
The FAC, GRASP2K, and MCDFGME codes are compared in three case study of radiative transitions occurring in tungsten ions: (i) Ni1 and Ni2 lines in Ni-like tungsten, (ii) $3p_{3/2}{-}3p_{1/2}$ fine splitting in Cl-like tungsten, and (iii) $Kα_{1}$ and $Kα_{2}$ lines in W VIII. Various approaches to including the Breit interaction term and QED corrections in atomic calculations are examined. Electron correlation effects are also investigated and compared to the Breit and QED contributions. The data presented here may be used to estimate theoretical uncertainties relevant to interpretation of hig…
Dielectronic recombination (DR) of xenonlike W20+ forming W19+ has been studied experimentally at a heavy-ion storage-ring. A merged-beams method has been employed for obtaining absolute rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination in the collision energy range 0-140 eV. The measured rate coefficient is dominated by strong DR resonances even at the lowest experimental energies. At plasma temperatures where the fractional abundance of W20+ is expected to peak in a fusion plasma, the experimentally derived plasma recombination rate coefficient is over a factor of 4 larger than the theoretica…
Experimental and theoretical cross sections are reported for single-photon single ionization of W$^{5+}$ ions. Absolute measurements were conducted employing the photon-ion merged-beams technique. Detailed photon-energy scans were performed at (67$\pm$10)~meV resolution in the 20 -- 160 eV range. In contrast to photoionization of tungsten ions in lower charge states, the cross section is dominated by narrow, densely-spaced resonances. Theoretical results were obtained from a Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix approach employing a basis set of 457 levels providing cross sections for photoionization of W$^{…
Calculations of energy levels, radiative rates and lifetimes are reported for eight ions of tungsten, i.e. S-like (W LIX) to F-like (W LXVI). A large number of levels has been considered for each ion and extensive configuration interaction has been included among a range of configurations. For the calculations, the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package (GRASP) has been adopted, and radiative rates (as well as oscillator strengths and line strengths) are listed for all E1, E2, M1, and M2 transitions of the ions. Comparisons have been made with earlier available experimental and …
An electron beam ion trap (EBIT) is used to measure extreme ultraviolet spectra between 10 nm and 25 nm from highly-charged ions of tungsten with an open 3d shell (W XLVIII through W LVI). We found that almost all strong lines are due to the forbidden magnetic-dipole (M1) transitions within $3d^n$ ground configurations. A total of 37 spectral lines are identified for the first time using detailed collisional-radiative (CR) modeling of the EBIT spectra. A new level-merging scheme for compactification of rate equations is described. The CR simulations for Maxwellian plasmas show that several lin…
We review experimental and theoretical efforts aimed at a detailed understanding of the recombination of electrons with highly-charged tungsten ions characterised by an open 4f sub-shell. Highly-charged tungsten occurs as a plasma contaminant in ITER-like tokamak experiments, where it acts as an unwanted cooling agent. Modelling of the charge state populations in a plasma requires reliable thermal rate coefficients for charge-changing electron collisions. The electron recombination of medium-charged tungsten species with open 4f sub-shells is especially challenging to compute reliably. Storage…
We present spectroscopic measurements and detailed theoretical analysis of inner-shell LMn and LNn (n $\geq$ 4) dielectronic resonances in highly-charged M-shell ions of tungsten. The x-ray emission from W$^{49+}$ through W$^{64+}$ was recorded at the electron beam ion trap (EBIT) facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with a high-purity Ge detector for electron beam energies between 6.8 keV and 10.8 keV. The measured spectra clearly show the presence of strong resonance features as well as direct excitation spectral lines. The analysis of the recorded spectra wi…
Experimental and theoretical results are reported for single-photon single ionization of the tungsten ion W$^{4+}$. Absolute cross sections have been measured employing the photon-ion merged-beams setup at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. Detailed photon-energy scans were performed at 200~meV bandwidth in the 40 -- 105~eV range. Theoretical results have been obtained from a Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix approach employing basis sets of 730 levels for the photoionization of W$^{4+}$. Calculations were carried out for the $4f^{14}5s^2 5p^6 5d^2 \; {^3}{\rm F}_{J}$, $J$=2, ground level and the ass…
In a recent paper, El-Maaref et al. [J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Transfer 2019, 224:147] have reported atomic data for Zn-like W~XLV. Their results are mainly for energy levels, radiative rates, collision strengths ($Ω$) for electron impact excitation, and cross sections for ionization, but for only for a few levels/transitions, and in a very limited range of energy. For the calculations of $Ω$ they have adopted the DARC code. In this comment, through our independent calculations, we demonstrate that their results for $Ω$ are highly underestimated by over two orders of magnitude, and hence ar…
Atomic properties of $n=3$ states of the W$^{56+}$ $-$ W$^{61+}$ ions are systematically investigated through two state-of-the-art methods, namely, the second-order many-body perturbation theory, and the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method combined with the relativistic configuration interaction approach. The contributions of valence-valence and core-valence electron correlations, the Breit interaction, the higher-order retardation correction beyond the Breit interaction through the transverse photon interaction, and the quantum electrodynamical corrections to the excitation energies…
Experimental and theoretical results are reported for single-photon single ionization of W$^{2+}$ and W$^{3+}$ tungsten ions. Experiments were performed at the photon-ion merged-beam setup of the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. Absolute cross sections and detailed energy scans were measured over an energy range from about 20~eV to 90~eV at a bandwidth of 100~meV. Broad peak features with widths typically around 5~eV have been observed with almost no narrow resonances present in the investigated energy range. Theoretical results were obtained from a Dirac-Coulomb $R$-matrix approach. The cal…
We calculate the electron recombination rates with target ions W$^{q+}$, $q = 18$ -- $25$, as functions of electron energy and electron temperature (i.e. the rates integrated over the Maxwellian velocity distribution). Comparison with available experimental data for W$^{18+}$, W$^{19+}$, and W$^{20+}$ is used as a test of our calculations. Our predictions for W$^{21+}$, W$^{22+}$, W$^{23+}$, W$^{24+}$, and W$^{25+}$ (where the experimental data are not available) may be used for plasma modelling in thermonuclear reactors. The results for the temperature dependent rates for each ion are fitted …
Recently, El-Maaref {\it et al}\, [J. Phys. B 52(2019) 065202] have reported results for energy levels, radiative rates and collision strengths ($Ω$) for some transitions of Kr-like W~XXXIX. For the calculations of these parameters they have adopted several codes, including GRASP, DARC and FAC. For energy levels they have shown discrepancies of up to 1.64~Ryd between the GRASP and FAC calculations, whereas for $Ω$ the differences between the DARC and FAC results are over an order of magnitude for a few transitions. In addition, for several transitions there is an anomaly in the behaviour of $Ω…
We report the first measurements and detailed analysis of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra (4 nm to 20 nm) of highly-charged tungsten ions W$^{54+}$ to W$^{63+}$ obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Collisional-radiative modelling is used to identify strong electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions in all ionization stages. These lines can be used for impurity transport studies and temperature diagnostics in fusion reactors, such as ITER. Identifications of prominent lines from several W ions were confirmed by measurement of isoelectronic EUV spectra of Hf, Ta, and Au. We als…
A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measur…
Past and ongoing research activities at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage-ring TSR are reviewed which aim at providing accurate absolute rate coefficients and cross sections of atomic collision processes for applications in astrophysics and magnetically confined fusion. In particular, dielectronic recombination and electron impact ionization of iron ions are discussed as well as dielectronic recombination of tungsten ions.
We have recorded extreme ultraviolet spectra from $\mathrm{W^{11+}}$ to $\mathrm{W^{15+}}$ ions using a new flat field spectrometer installed at the Shanghai high temperature superconducting electron beam ion trap. The spectra were recorded at beam energies ranging between 200 eV and 400 eV and showed spectral lines/transition arrays in the 170 - 260 Å region. The charge states and spectra transitions were identified by comparison with calculations using a detailed relativistic configuration interaction method and collisional-radiative model, both incorporated in the Flexible Atomic Code. Atom…
Absolute cross sections for electron-impact single ionisation (EISI) of multiply charged tungsten ions (W$^{q+}$) with charge states in the range $ 11 \leq q \leq 18$ in the electron-ion collision energy ranges from below the respective ionisation thresholds up to 1000~eV were measured employing the electron-ion crossed-beams method. In order to extend the results to higher energies, cross section calculations were performed using the subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave (SCADW) method for electron-ion collision energies up to 150~keV. From the combined experimental and scaled theoretical …
We present extreme ultraviolet and visible spectra of promethiumlike tungsten and gold obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Although the contributions from a few charge states are involved in the spectra, the charge state of the ion assigned to the observed lines is definitely identified by the time-of-flight analysis of the ions performed at the same time with the spectroscopic measurements. Experimental results are compared with collisional-radiative model calculations as well as previous experimental and theoretical studies.
Tungsten is an important element for magnetically confined fusion plasmas but has the potential to cool, or even quench the plasma due to it being an efficient radiator. Total and level-resolved dielectronic recombination (DR) rate coefficients, for all ionization stages, are essential to model tungsten. We describe a set calculations performed using the distorted wave code AUTOSTRUCTURE for the tungsten ions W$^{37+}$ to W$^{28+}$. We demonstrate the importance of relativistic configuration mixing in such calculations. In particular, we show that the partial DR rate coefficients calculated in…
Experimental and theoretical results are reported for photoionization of Ta-like (W$^{+}$) tungsten ions. Absolute cross sections were measured in the energy range 16 to 245 eV employing the photon-ion merged-beam setup at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. Detailed photon-energy scans at 100 meV bandwidth were performed in the 16 to 108 eV range. In addition, the cross section was scanned at 50 meV resolution in regions where fine resonance structures could be observed. Theoretical results were obtained from a Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix approach. Photoionization cross section calculations wer…
A comprehensive theoretical study of the E1, M1, E2 transitions of Ca-like tungsten ions is presented. Using multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method with a restricted active space treatment, the wavelengths and probabilities of the M1 and E2 transitions between the multiplets of the ground state configuration ([Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{6}$3d$^{2}$) and of the E1 transitions between [Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{5}$3d$^{3}$ and [Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{6}$3d$^{2}$ have been calculated. The results are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data. The present E1 and M1 calculations are compared with previous…
Signatures of multi-keV LMN dielectronic resonances in highly-charged 3d^n ions of tungsten were detected in the intensity ratios of extreme-ultraviolet magnetic-dipole lines within ground configurations. The measurements were performed with an electron beam ion trap at beam energies of about 6 keV. Large-scale collisional-radiative modeling incorporating magnetic sublevels of autoionizing levels showed the significance of anisotropy effects due to the monodirectional propagation of the electron beam. The observation method allows simultaneous resolved registration of dielectronic resonances f…
The magnetic dipole (M1) line strength between the fine-structure levels of the ground configurations in B-, F-, Al- and Cl-like ions are calculated for the four elements argon, iron, molybdenum and tungsten. Systematically enlarged multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock~(MCDHF) wave functions are employed to account for the interelectronic interaction with the Breit interaction included in first-order perturbation theory. The QED corrections are evaluated to all orders in $αZ$ utilizing an effective potential approach. The calculated line strengths are compared with the results of other theori…
A statistical theory of resonant multielectron recombination based on properties of chaotic eigenstates is developed. The level density of many-body states increases exponentially with the number of excited electrons. When the residual electron-electron interaction exceeds the interval between these levels, the eigenstates (called compound states or compound resonances if these states are in the continuum) become "chaotic" superpositions of large numbers of Hartree-Fock configurational basis states. This situation takes place in some rare-earth atoms and many open-shell multiply charged ions e…
The ab initio quasirelativistic Hartree-Fock method developed specifically for the calculation of spectral parameters of heavy atoms and highly charged ions was applied to determine atomic data for tungsten ions. The correlation effects were included by adopting configuration interaction method. The Breit-Pauli approximation for quasirelativistic Hartree-Fock radial orbitals was employed to take into account relativistic effects. The energy level spectra, radiative lifetimes, Lande factors $g$ were calculated for the $\mathrm{4p^64d}$, $\mathrm{4p^64f}$ and $\mathrm{4p^54d^2}$ configurations o…
To provide spectroscopic data for lowly charged tungsten ions relevant to fusion research, this work focuses on the W8+ ion. Six visible spectra lines in the range of 420-660 nm are observed with a compact electron-beam ion trap in Shanghai. These lines are assigned to W8+ based on their intensity variations as increasing electron-beam energy and the M1 line from the ground configuration in W7+. Furthermore, transition energies are calculated for the 30 lowest levels of the 4f14 5s2 5p4, 4f13 5s2 5p5 and 4f12 5s2 5p6 configurations of W8+ by using the flexible atomic code (FAC) and GRASP packa…
