We report the first measurements and detailed analysis of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra (4 nm to 20 nm) of highly-charged tungsten ions W$^{54+}$ to W$^{63+}$ obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Collisional-radiative modelling is used to identify strong electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions in all ionization stages. These lines can be used for impurity transport studies and temperature diagnostics in fusion reactors, such as ITER. Identifications of prominent lines from several W ions were confirmed by measurement of isoelectronic EUV spectra of Hf, Ta, and Au. We also discuss the importance of charge exchange recombination for correct description of ionization balance in the EBIT plasma.

The electron beam ion trap (EBIT) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology was used to produce highly-charged ions of hafnium, tantalum and gold with an open 3d shell. The extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) spectra from these ions were recorded with a flat-field grazing-incidence spectrometer in the wavelength range of 4.5 nm to 25 nm. A total of 133 new spectral lines, primarily due to magnetic-dipole transitions within the ground-state $3d^n$ configurations of the Co-like to K-like ions, were identified by comparing energy-dependent experimental spectra with a detailed collisional-radiat…
We present extreme ultraviolet and visible spectra of promethiumlike tungsten and gold obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Although the contributions from a few charge states are involved in the spectra, the charge state of the ion assigned to the observed lines is definitely identified by the time-of-flight analysis of the ions performed at the same time with the spectroscopic measurements. Experimental results are compared with collisional-radiative model calculations as well as previous experimental and theoretical studies.
A scheme to infer the temporal coherence of EUV frequency combs generated from intra-cavity high-order harmonic generation is put forward. The excitation dynamics of highly charged Mg-like ions, interacting with EUV pulse trains featuring different carrier-envelope-phase fluctuations, are simulated. While demonstrating the microscopic origin of the macroscopic equivalence between excitations induced by pulse trains and continuous-wave lasers, we show that the coherence time of the pulse train can be determined from the spectrum of the excitations. The scheme will provide a verification of the …
The variation in mean-square nuclear charge radius of xenon isotopes was measured utilizing a new method based on extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy of highly charged Na-like ions. The isotope shift of the Na-like D1 (3s $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ - 3p $^2$P$_{1/2}$) transition between the $^{124}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe isotopes was experimentally determined using the electron beam ion trap facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The mass shift and the field shift coefficients were calculated with enhanced precision by relativistic many-body perturbation theory and multi-configuration Di…
After a brief introduction to the NIST EBIT facility, we present the results of three different types of experiments that have been carried out there recently: EUV and visible spectroscopy in support of the microelectronics industry, laboratory astrophysics using an x-ray microcalorimeter, and charge exchange studies using extracted beams of highly charged ions.
We experimentally re-evaluate the fine structure of Sn$^{11+...14+}$ ions. These ions are essential in bright extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) plasma-light sources for next-generation nanolithography, but their complex electronic structure is an open challenge for both theory and experiment. We combine optical spectroscopy of magnetic dipole $M1$ transitions, in a wavelength range covering 260\,nm to 780\,nm, with charge-state selective ionization in an electron beam ion trap. Our measurements confirm the predictive power of \emph{ab initio} calculations based on Fock space coupled cluster theory. We…
We have recorded extreme ultraviolet spectra from $\mathrm{W^{11+}}$ to $\mathrm{W^{15+}}$ ions using a new flat field spectrometer installed at the Shanghai high temperature superconducting electron beam ion trap. The spectra were recorded at beam energies ranging between 200 eV and 400 eV and showed spectral lines/transition arrays in the 170 - 260 Å region. The charge states and spectra transitions were identified by comparison with calculations using a detailed relativistic configuration interaction method and collisional-radiative model, both incorporated in the Flexible Atomic Code. Atom…
Spectra from xenon ions have been recorded at the NIST EBIT and the emission into a 2% bandwidth at 13.5 nm arising from 4d-5p transitions compared with that from 4d-4f and 4p-4d transitions in Xe XI and also with that obtained from the unresolved transition array (UTA) observed to peak just below 11 nm. It was found that an improvement of a factor of five could be gained in photon yield using the UTA rather than the 4d-5p emission. The results are compared with atomic structure calculations and imply that a significant gain in efficiency should be obtained using tin, in which the emission at …

A collection of the best solar and laboratory spectra in the soft X-rays is used here to perform a preliminary benchmark in this wavelength region, by comparing observed vs. predicted wavelengths and calibrated solar irradiances. The benchmark focuses on the Fe IX - Fe XIV ions, for which we have recently calculated the relevant atomic data, however a few other ions have also been benchmarked. The iron ions are dominating the soft X-rays, however a large fraction of the strongest soft X-ray lines due to n=4 -> n=3 transitions were previously unidentified. The strongest transitions are all ident…
Laser-produced Sn plasma sources are used to generate extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light in state-of-the-art nanolithography. An ultraviolet and optical spectrum is measured from a droplet-based laser-produced Sn plasma, with a spectrograph covering the range 200 - 800 nm. This spectrum contains hundreds of spectral lines from lowly charged tin ions Sn$^{1+}$ - Sn$^{4+}$ of which a major fraction was hitherto unidentified. We present and identify a selected class of lines belonging to the quasi-one-electron, Ag-like ([Kr]$4d^{10} nl$ electronic configuration), Sn$^{3+}$ ion, linking the optical l…
The experimental thermonuclear reactor, ITER, is currently being constructed in Cadarache, France. The reactor vessel will be constructred with a beryllium coated wall, and a tungsten coated divertor. As a plasma-facing component, the divertor will be under conditions of extreme temperature, resulting in the sputtering of tungsten impurities into the main body plasma. Modelling and understanding the potential cooling effects of these impurities requires detailed collisional-radiative modelling. These models require a wealth of atomic data for the various atomic species in the plasma. In partic…
We present experimental inferences of cross-field impurity transport coefficients for Alcator C-Mod plasmas using a novel forward model for the entire Ca K-alpha spectrum, including satellite lines within the spectral range, to compare to high-resolution X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy (XICS). These measurements are complemented by Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) spectroscopy that constrains transport closer to the edge. Using new atomic data sets for both XICS and EUV analysis has enabled consideration of line ratios across both spectral ranges and has increased the accuracy of inferred transpo…
We review experimental and theoretical efforts aimed at a detailed understanding of the recombination of electrons with highly-charged tungsten ions characterised by an open 4f sub-shell. Highly-charged tungsten occurs as a plasma contaminant in ITER-like tokamak experiments, where it acts as an unwanted cooling agent. Modelling of the charge state populations in a plasma requires reliable thermal rate coefficients for charge-changing electron collisions. The electron recombination of medium-charged tungsten species with open 4f sub-shells is especially challenging to compute reliably. Storage…
We report on a method for measuring the branching ratios of dipole transitions of trapped atomic ions by performing nested sequences of population inversions. This scheme is broadly applicable and does not use ultrafast pulsed or narrow linewidth lasers. It is simple to perform and insensitive to experimental variables such as laser and magnetic field noise as well as ion heating. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we make the most accurate measurements thus far of the branching ratios of both 5P1/2 and 5P3/2 states in 88Sr+ with sub-1% uncertainties. We measure 17.175(27) for the branching rat…
