The "inedito" of Einstein and his 1925 visit to Buenos Aires

The physicist Enrique Loedel Palumbo in the Montevideo-Buenos Aires-La Plata scientific corridor: 1920-1930

In this paper we consider Montevideo's liberal progressive atmosphere towards the end of the nineteenth century and, within it, the trajectory of young science student Enrique Loedel Palumbo. We discuss some of his activities in Argentina, where he moved to study Physics at a new and well-equipped Physics Institute at the National University of La Plata, where he would later become a leading figure. Initially Loedel Palumbo worked on the structure of complex molecules based on their magnetic, electric and optical properties. Later, when Einstein visited Argentina in 1925, he had chance to exch…

Relativity in Argentine culture in the early twentieth century

In previous works we have considered various aspects of the reception of the theories of Albert Einstein in our country. In particular, we discussed the impact of his visit to Argentina in 1925, and the precise content of the conferences and scientific publications that Einstein communicated while he was here. We have also discussed, critically, different documents on topics related to the theory of relativity published in the country during the first decades of the last century, in which the technical level was extremely varied. Finally, we have dealt with a forgotten document, which Einstein…

The Theories of Relativity and Bergson's Philosophy of Duration and Simultaneity During and After Einstein's 1922 Visit to Paris

In 1922, Albert Einstein visited Paris and interacted extensively with an illustrious section of the French academia. In overfilled sessions at the Collége de France and the Sorbonne, Einstein explained his theories of relativity, and prominent physicists, mathematicians and philosophers listened, debated, questioned and explored facets of relativity. The 1922 visit had its echoes in the life and works of many who participated, particularly decisive for Einstein and the philosopher Henri Bergson. This essay examines that eventful visit, focusing on the physical and logical aspects of Bergson's…

Einstein, Barcelona, Symmetry & Cosmology: The Birth of an Equation for the Universe

Einstein's aborted attempt at a dynamic steady-state universe

In June 1930 Einstein visited Cambridge where he stayed with Eddington who had just shown that Einstein's supposedly static universe of 1917 was not stable. This forced Einstein to rethink his cosmology. He spent January and February 1931 at Pasadena. There, he discussed cosmology intensely with Tolman, conscious that he had to replace his original model of 1917. However, at the end of February he still had not made up his mind about an alternative. The Albert Einstein Archives of Jerusalem (AEA) hold an undated draft, handwritten by Einstein, which I date to the beginning of January 1931. In …

El universo de Einstein：1905 - annus mirabilis - 2005

El universo de Einstein: 1905 - annus mirabilis - 2005
