Ordinary metallic photonic crystals (PCs) have photonic band gaps in which the density of states (DOS) is strongly modified. Thermal emission of photons can be suppressed and enhanced accordingly. We consider the thermal emission characteristics of a metallic photonic crystal slab with a tunable thickness which in the thick limit approaches that of a photonic crystal and in the thin limit approaches that of a textured surface. We find that a thick photonic crystal suppresses emission in a specific range while a thin slab suppresses low frequency emission.
We characterize nano-textured surfaces by optical diffraction techniques using an adapted commercial light microscope with two detectors, a CCD camera and a spectrometer. The acquisition and analyzing time for the topological parameters height, width, and sidewall angle is only a few milliseconds of a grating. We demonstrate that the microscope has a resolution in the nanometer range, also in an environment with many vibrations, such as a machine floor. Furthermore, we demonstrate an easy method to find the area of interest with the integrated CCD camera.
Photonic molecules, named by analogy with chemical molecules, are clusters of closely located electromagnetically interacting microcavities or "photonic atoms". As two or several microcavities are brought close together, their optical modes interact, and a rich spectrum of photonic molecule supermodes emerges, which depends both on geometrical and material properties of individual cavities and on their mutual interactions. Here, we discuss ways of controllable manipulation of photonic molecule supermodes, which improve or add new functionalities to microcavity-based optical components. We pres…

Using a 3D fully-vectorial nonlinear time-domain analysis we numerically investigate the generation of terahertz radiation by pumping a photonic crystal microcavity out of resonance. High quality factors and a quadratic susceptibility lead to few-cycle terahertz pulses via optical rectification. Material dispersion as well as linear and nonlinear anisotropy is fully accounted for.
Second-harmonic and sum-frequency mixing phenomena associated with 3D-localized photonic modes are studied in InP-based planar photonic crystal microcavities excited by short-pulse radiation near 1550 nm. Three-missing-hole microcavities that support two closely-spaced modes exhibit rich second-order scattering spectra that reflect intra- and inter-mode mixing via the bulk InP chi(2) during ring-down after excitation by the broadband, resonant pulse. Simultaneous excitation with a non-resonant source results in tunable second-order radiation from the microcavity.
We experimentally demonstrate series of identical two, three, and five coupled high Q-factor Surface Nanoscale Axial Photonics (SNAP) microresonators formed by periodic nanoscale variation of the optical fiber radius. All calculations were made for two dimensional metallic photonic crystal.

A long existing issue for microdisk lasers is the small spontaneous emission coupling rate (β) in microdisk,. We found that it is due to the coupling of emitter spontaneous emission into competing Fabry-Perot (FP) modes in the microdisk cavity. Based on this analysis, we propose a new type of photonic crystal microdisk (PCM) laser to drastically suppress the photonic density of states in the vertical FP modes. As a result, we obtained a three fold increase of β than previously reported highest β of 0.15 at room temperature. The spontaneous emission control in truncated photonic crystals become…

We consider large-mode area photonic crystal fibers for visible applications where micro-deformation induced attenuation becomes a potential problem when the effective area A_eff is sufficiently large compared to lambda^2. We argue how a slight increase in fiber diameter D can be used in screening the high-frequency components of the micro-deformation spectrum mechanically and we confirm this experimentally for both 15 and 20 micron core fibers. For typical bending-radii (R~16 cm) the operating band-width increases by ~3-400 nm to the low-wavelength side.

We study experimentally the Goos-Hanchen effect observed at the reflection of a self-collimated beam from the surface of a two-dimensional photonic crystal and describe a method for controlling the beam reflection through surface engineering. The microwave photonic crystal, fabricated from alumina rods, allows control of the output position of a reflected beam undergoing an internal Goos-Hanchen shift by changing the rod diameter at the reflection surface. The experimental data is in good agreement with the results of the finite-difference time-domain numerical calculations.

Microwave transmission measurements were performed for a three-dimensional (3D) layer-by-layer chiral photonic crystal (PhC), whose photonic band structure contains 3D singular points, Weyl points. For the frequency and wavevector in the vicinity of a Weyl point, the transmitted intensity was found to be inversely proportional to the square of the propagation length. In addition, the transmitted wave was well-collimated in the plane parallel to the PhC layers, even for point-source incidence. When a plane wave was incident on the PhC containing metal scatters, the planar wavefront was reconstr…
