We have experimentally studied polarization properties of the two-dimensional coupled photonic crystal microcavity arrays, and observed a strong polarization dependence of the transmission and reflection of light from the structures - the effects that can be employed in building miniaturized polarizing optical components. Moreover, by combining these properties with a strong sensitivity of the coupled bands on the surrounding refractive index, we have demonstrated a detection of small refractive index changes in the environment, which is useful for construction of bio-chemical sensors.
The photonic modes mediated absorption dynamics at femtosecond time scales along with the control of spontaneous emission tunability are investigated all-dielectric optical microcavity having BaTiO3 (BTO) as defect layer. The cavity-enhanced transient absorption reveals the dominant excited state absorption (ESA) of both photonic and electronic modes due to strong third-order optical nonlinearity influence. Photoluminescence of BTO is found to be guided and tuned by the photonic cavity mode. Such active photonic structures can be envisaged as a potential candidate in nonlinear optics and photo…
We recently proposed two-dimensional coupled photonic crystal microcavity arrays as a route to achieve a slow-group velocity of light (flat band) in all crystal directions. In this paper we present the first experimental demonstration of such structures with a measured group velocity below 0.008c and discuss the feasibility of applications such as low-threshold photonic crystal lasers with increased output powers, optical delay components and sensors.
Polarization-resolved second-harmonic spectra are obtained from the resonant modes of a two-dimensional planar photonic crystal microcavity patterned in a free-standing InP slab. The photonic crystal microcavity is comprised of a single missing-hole defect in a hexagonal photonic crystal host formed with elliptically-shaped holes. The cavity supports two orthogonally-polarized resonant modes split by 60 wavenumbers. Sum-frequency data are reported from the nonlinear interaction of the two coherently excited modes, and the polarization dependence is explained in terms of the nonlinear susceptib…
We theoretically study the interaction between dual cavity modes in a planar photonic microcavity structure in the optical communication wavelength range. The merging and splitting of cavity mode is analyzed with realistic microcavity structures. The merging of dual cavity resonance into a single cavity resonance is achieved by changing the number of layers between the two cavities. The splitting of single cavity resonance into dual cavity resonance is obtained with an increase in the reflectivity of mirrors in the front and rear side of the microcavity structure. The threshold condition for t…
A design of all optical diode in $L$-shaped photonic crystal waveguide is proposed that uses the multistability of single nonlinear Kerr microcavity with two dipole modes. Asymmetry of the waveguide is achieved by difference in coupling of the dipole modes with the left and right legs of waveguide. By use of coupled mode theory we present domains in axis of light frequency and amplitude where an extremely high transmission contrast can be achieved. The direction of optical diode transmission can be governed by power and frequency of injecting light. The theory agrees with numerical solution of…
We have measured time-resolved the photon storage time and the quality factor of an ultrafast photonic cavity using an autocorrelator. The cavity consists of a $λ$-thick GaAs layer sandwiched between GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg reflectors and resonates at 985 nm wavelength. The inverse relative linewidth measured with white light reflectivity is 830, while the quality factor obtained from the time resolved measurements is 1500. The photon storage time in the cavity is 0.78 ps. We show that the difference between the quality factor and the inverse relative linewidth results from inhomogeneous b…
We use a phenomenological Hamiltonian approach to derive a set of coupled mode equations that describe light propagation in waveguides that are periodically side-coupled to microcavities. The structure exhibits both Bragg gap and (polariton like) resonator gap in the dispersion relation. The origin and physical significance of the two types of gaps are discussed. The coupled-mode equations derived from the effective field formalism are valid deep within the Bragg gaps and resonator gaps.
Microcavity and whispering gallery mode (WGM) biosensors derive their sensitivity from monitoring frequency shifts induced by protein binding at sites of highly confined field intensities, where field strengths can be further amplified by excitation of plasmon resonances in nanoparticle layers. Here, we propose a mechanism based on optical trapping of a protein at the site of plasmonic field enhancements for achieving ultra sensitive detection in only microliter-scale sample volumes, and in real-time. We demonstrate femto-Molar sensitivity corresponding to a few 1000s of macromolecules. Simula…
Optical microcavities based on zero-group-velocity surface modes in photonic crystal slabs are studied. It is shown that high quality factors can be easily obtained for such microcavities in photonic crystal slabs. With increasing of the cavity length, the quality factor is gradually enhanced and the resonant frequency converges to that of the zero-group-velocity surface mode in the photonic crystal. The number of the resonant modes with high quality factors is mainly determined by the number of surface modes with zero-group velocity.
The employment of magneto-optical materials to fabricate photonic crystals gives the unique opportunity to achieve optical tuning by applying a magnetic field. In this study we have simulated the transmission spectrum of a microcavity in which the Bragg reflectors are made with silica (SiO2) and yttria (Y2O3) and the defect layer is made with TGG (Tb3Ga5O12). We show that the application of an external magnetic field results in a tuning of the defect mode of the microcavity. In the simulations we have considered the wavelength dependence of the refractive indexes and the Verdet constants of th…
Third-order nonlinear optical effects in photonic microcavities are studied. Significant light defocusing in the thin nonlinear microcavity spacer was observed. The polarization self-action effect was detected, when the large nonlinear polarization rotation angle arises when exciting the microcavity mode, being proportional to the radiation intensity.
Recent technological advancements have allowed to implement in solid-state cavity-based devices phenomena of quantum nature such as vacuum Rabi splitting, controllable single photon emission and quantum entanglement. For a sufficiently strong coupling between a quantum emitter and a cavity, large quality factors ($Q$) along with small modal volume ($V_{eff}$) are essential. Here we show that by applying a 5nm Al coating to the sidewalls of a submicrometer-sized Fabry-Pérot microcavity, the cavity $Q$ can be temperature-tuned from few hundreds at room temperatures to 2$\times$10$^5$ below 30~K.…
We present a two-dimensional photonic crystal design with a microcavity of four defect dielectric rods with eigenfrequencies residing in the propagating band of directional waveguide. In the linear case for tuning of material parameters of defect rods the nonrobust bound state in the continuum (BSC) might occur. The BSC is a result of full destructive interference of resonant monopole and quadrupole modes with the same parity. % to trap light interior of the microcavity. A robust BSC arises in a self-adaptive way without necessity to tune the parameters of the microcavity with the Kerr effect.…
Microcavity polaritons are light-matter quasiparticles that arise from the strong coupling between excitons and photons confined in a semiconductor microcavity. They typically operate at visible or near visible wavelengths. They combine the properties of confined electromagnetic fields, including a sizeable spin-orbit coupling, and the sensitivity to external magnetic fields and particle interactions inherited from their partly matter nature. These features make polaritons an excellent platform to study topological phases in photonics in one and two dimensional lattices, which band properties …
A surrounding electromagnetic environment can engineer spontaneous emissions from quantum emitters through the Purcell effect. For instance, a plasmonic antenna can efficiently confine an electromagnetic field and enhance the fluorescent process. In this study, we demonstrate that a photonic microcavity can modulate plasmon-enhanced fluorescence by engineering the local electromagnetic environment. Consequently, we constructed a plasmon-enhanced emitter (PE-emitter), which comprised a nanorod and a nanodiamond, using the nanomanipulation technique. Furthermore, we controlled a polystyrene sphe…
Nanoantennas offer the ultimate spatial control over light by concentrating optical energy well below the diffraction limit, whereas their quality factor (Q) is constrained by large radiative and dissipative losses. Dielectric microcavities, on the other hand, are capable of generating a high Q-factor through an extended photon storage time but have a diffraction-limited optical mode volume. Here we bridge the two worlds, by studying an exemplary hybrid system integrating plasmonic gold nanorods acting as nanoantennas with an on-resonance dielectric photonic crystal (PC) slab acting as a low-l…
A two-dimensional photonic crystal semiconductor microcavity with a quality factor Q ~ 40,000 and a modal volume Veff ~ 0.9 cubic wavelengths is demonstrated. A micron-scale optical fiber taper is used as a means to probe both the spectral and spatial properties of the cavity modes, allowing not only measurement of modal loss, but also the ability to ascertain the in-plane localization of the cavity modes. This simultaneous demonstration of high-Q and ultra-small Veff in an optical microcavity is of potential interest in quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and optoelectronics. In particular, the…
Mid-infrared photonic modes of a periodically patterned metal-dielectric-metal structure have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. We have observed an anticrossing behaviour between cavity modes localized in the double-metal regions and the surface plasmon polariton, signature of a hybridisation between the two modes.
Circularly polarized (CP) electroluminescence from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has aroused considerable attention for their potential in future display and photonic technologies. The development of CP-OLEDs relies largely on chiral-emitters, which not only remain rare owing to difficulties in design and synthesis but also limit the performance of electroluminescence. When the polarization (pseudospin) degrees of freedom of a photon interact with its orbital angular momentum, photonic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) emerges such as Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) effect. Here, we demonstrate a c…
Open Fabry-Perot microcavities represent a promising route for achieving a quantum electrodynamics (cavity-QED) platform with diamond-based emitters. In particular, they offer the opportunity to introduce high purity, minimally fabricated material into a tunable, high quality factor optical resonator. Here, we demonstrate a fiber-based microcavity incorporating a thick (> 10 μm) diamond membrane with a finesse of 17,000, corresponding to a quality factor Q ~ $10^6$. Such minimally fabricated, thick samples can contain optically stable emitters similar to those found in bulk diamond. We observe…
Ultrasensitive optical detection of nanometer-scaled particles is highly desirable for applications in early-stage diagnosis of human diseases, environmental monitoring, and homeland security, but remains extremely difficult due to ultralow polarizabilities of small-sized, low-index particles. Optical whispering-gallery-mode microcavities, which can enhance significantly the light-matter interaction, have emerged as promising platforms for label-free detection of nanoscale objects. Different from the conventional whispering-gallery-mode sensing relying on the reactive (i.e., dispersive) intera…
Spectral manifestations of hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes in a 1D photonic crystal bounded with a silver layer and containing a nematic liquid crystal layer working as a microcavity have been studied using numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the hybrid modes can be effectively tuned owing to the high sensitivity of the liquid crystal to the temperature and external electric field variations. It is established that the effect of temperature on the transmission spectrum of the investigated structure is most pronounced at the point of the phase transition of the liquid crystal to the iso…
The light absorption and transmission of monolayer MoS$_{2}$ in a one-dimensional defective photonic crystal (d-1DPC) is theoretically investigated. The study shows that the strong interference effect decreases photon density in particular areas of the microcavity. The d-1DPC can reduce light absorption of monolayer MoS$_{2}$ and enhance light transmission. The impact of monolayer MoS$_{2}$ light absorption on the localization effect of photon is investigated when monolayer MoS$_{2}$ and the organic light-emitting diode are located in the same microcavity. However, monolayer MoS$_{2}$ does not…
Microcavity solitons enable miniaturized coherent frequency comb sources. However, the formation of microcavity solitons can be disrupted by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), particularly in the emerging crystalline microcomb materials with high Raman gain. Here, we propose and implement dissipation control---tailoring the energy dissipation of selected cavity modes---to purposely raise/lower the threshold of Raman lasing in a strongly Raman-active lithium niobate microring resonator, and realize on-demand soliton mode-locking or Raman lasing. Numerical simulations are carried out to confirm …
Using a 3D fully-vectorial nonlinear time-domain analysis we numerically investigate the generation of terahertz radiation by pumping a photonic crystal microcavity out of resonance. High quality factors and a quadratic susceptibility lead to few-cycle terahertz pulses via optical rectification. Material dispersion as well as linear and nonlinear anisotropy is fully accounted for.
The commercialization of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) wafer has sparked significant on-chip photonic integration application due to its remarkable photonic, photoacoustic, electro-optic and piezoelectric nature. A variety of on-chip LNOI-based optical devices with high performance has been realized in recent years. Here we developed 1 mol\% erbium-doped LN crystal and its LNOI wafer, and fabricated an erbium-doped LNOI microdisk with high quality ($ \sim $ 1.05$\times 10^{^5}$ ). C-band laser emission with $ \sim $1530 nm and $ \sim $1560 nm from the high-Q erbium-doped LNOI microdisk w…
We propose a hybrid photonic-plasmonic resonant structure which consists of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity. It is found that the hybrid mode enables a strong interaction between the light and matter, and the single-atom cooperativity is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that in a bare WGM microcavity. This remarkable improvement originates from two aspects: (1) the MNP offers a highly enhanced local field in the vicinity of an emitter, and (2), surprisingly, the high-\textit{Q} property of WGMs can be maintained in the presenc…
A method is presented for modelling the optical properties of a photonic crystal structure mounted on a substrate which is thick enough that the light reflected from the back is incoherent with reflections from the front. Transmission and reflection spectra are presented for the cases where the structure is a multilayer planar microcavity and an opal photonic crystal. The contributions from the incoherent reflections can be very large, and in the photonic crystal case, change the positions of the spectral peaks.
Reconfigurable photonic circuits have applications ranging from next-generation computer architectures to quantum networks, coherent radar and optical metamaterials. However, complete reconfigurability is only currently practical on millimetre-scale device footprints. Here, we overcome this barrier by developing an on-chip high quality microcavity with resonances that can be electrically tuned across a full free spectral range (FSR). FSR tuning allows resonance with any source or emitter, or between any number of networked microcavities. We achieve it by integrating nanoelectronic actuation wi…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology continues to draw large interest due to its broad applications in wireless communications, radar, and spectroscopy. Compared to pure electronic solutions, photonic-based mmWave generation provides wide bandwidth, low power dissipation, and remoting through low-loss fiber. However, at high frequencies, two major challenges exist for the photonic system: the power roll-off of the photodiode, and the large signal linewidth derived directly from the lasers. Here, we demonstrate a new photonic mmWave platform by combining integrated microresonator solitons and hi…
We investigate the parity of transmission spectra in a photonic crystal (PhC) waveguide with a side-coupled cavity and a partially blocking element. We demonstrate, by means of numerical calculations, that by varying the cavity-block distance the spectra vary from being asymmetric with blue parity, to being symmetric (Lorentzian), to being asymmetric with red parity. For cavity-block distances larger than five PhC lattice constants, we show that the transmission spectrum is accurately described as the transmission spectrum of a Fabry-Perot etalon with a single propagating Bloch mode, and that …
The latest achievements in the fabrication of black phosphorus thin layers, towards the technological breakthrough of a phosphorene atomically thin layer, are paving the way for a their employment in electronics, optics, and optoelectronics. In this work, we have simulated the optical properties of one-dimensional photonic structures, i.e. photonic crystals and microcavities, in which few-layer black phosphorus is one of the components. The insertion of the 5 nm black phosphorous layers leads to a photonic band gap in the photonic crystals and a cavity mode in the microcavity interesting for l…

Topological photonics provides an important platform for the development of photonic devices with robust disorder-immune light transport and controllable helicity. Mixing photons with excitons (or polaritons) gives rise to nontrivial polaritonic bands with chiral modes, allowing the manipulation of helical lasers in strongly coupled light-matter systems. In this work, we demonstrate helical polariton lasing from topological valleys of an organic anisotropic microcrystalline cavity based on tailored local nontrivial band geometry. This polariton laser emits light of different helicity along dif…
We propose the design of 1D photonic crystals and microcavities in which fluorine-indium codoped cadmium oxide (FICO) nanocrystal based layers and layers of diarylethene-based polyester (pDTE) are alternated or embedded in a microcavity. The irradiation with UV light results in two different behaviours: i) it dopes the FICO nanocrystals inducing a blue shift of their plasmonic resonances; ii) it changes the real part of the refractive index of the photochromic pDTE polymer. These two behaviours are combined in the proposed photonic structures and can be useful for switchable filters and caviti…
Second-harmonic and sum-frequency mixing phenomena associated with 3D-localized photonic modes are studied in InP-based planar photonic crystal microcavities excited by short-pulse radiation near 1550 nm. Three-missing-hole microcavities that support two closely-spaced modes exhibit rich second-order scattering spectra that reflect intra- and inter-mode mixing via the bulk InP chi(2) during ring-down after excitation by the broadband, resonant pulse. Simultaneous excitation with a non-resonant source results in tunable second-order radiation from the microcavity.
Nonlinear optics processes lie at the heart of photonics and quantum optics for their indispensable role in light sources and information processing. During the past decades, the three- and four-wave mixing ($χ^{(2)}$ and $χ^{(3)}$) effects have been extensively studied, especially in the micro-/nano-structures by which the photon-photon interaction strength is greatly enhanced. So far, the high-order nonlinearity beyond the $χ^{(3)}$ has rarely been studied in dielectric materials due to their weak intrinsic nonlinear susceptibility, even in high-quality microcavities. Here, an effective five…
In this work, all-silicon, integrated optofluidic platforms, fabricated by electrochemical micromachining technology, making use of vertical, one-dimensional high-aspect- ratio photonic crystals for flow-through (bio)sensing applications are reviewed. The potential of such platforms for point-of-care applications is discussed for both pressure-driven and capillarity- driven operations with reference to refractometry and biochemical sensing.
On-chip efficient nonlinear functions are instrumental in escalating the utilities and performance of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), especially for a wide range of classical and quantum applications, such as tunable coherent radiation, optical frequency conversion, spectroscopy, quantum science, etc. Lithium tantalate (LT) has been widely used in nonlinear wavelength converters, surface acoustic wave resonators, and electro-optic, acoustic-optic devices owing to its excellent optical properties. Here, we fabricated a Z-cut lithium tantalate on insulator (LTOI) microdisk with high quality…
Exceptional points, with simultaneous coalescence of eigen-values and eigen-vectors, can be realized with non-Hermitian photonic systems. With the enhanced response, exceptional points have been proposed to improve the performance of photonic sensing. Recently, there are intense debate about the actual sensing advantage of exceptional points. The major concern is that intrinsic noise is also amplified at exceptional points. Here, we aim to clarify the contribution of exceptional points for photonic sensing. This is achieved by analyzing the condition to realize divergent quantum Fisher informa…
