We review the latest progress and properties of the families of bright and dark one-dimensional periodic waves propagating in saturable Kerr-type and quadratic nonlinear media. We show how saturation of the nonlinear response results in appearance of stability (instability) bands in focusing (defocusing) medium, which is in sharp contrast with the properties of periodic waves in Kerr media. One of the key results discovered is the stabilization of multicolor periodic waves in quadratic media. In particular, dark-type waves are shown to be metastable, while bright-type waves are completely stable in a broad range of energy flows and material parameters. This yields the first known example of completely stable periodic wave patterns propagating in conservative uniform media supporting bright solitons. Such results open the way to the experimental observation of the corresponding self-sustained periodic wave patterns.
Passive mode-locking critically relies on a saturable loss mechanism to form ultrashort pulses. However, in Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM), no actual absorption takes place, but rather losses appear due to diffraction, and actual light must escape the cavity. The Kerr-lens effect works to generate through diffraction an effective instantaneous saturable absorber that delicately depends on the interplay between the spatial and temporal profiles of the pulse. Despite the importance of KLM as a technique for generating ultrafast pulses and the fundamental role of the diffraction losses in its opera…
We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a novel mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a saturable absorber based on nonlinear Kerr beam cleanup effect. The saturable absorber was formed by a 2-m graded-index multimode fiber and a single-mode fiber segment served as a diaphragm. With an all-normal-dispersion-fiber configuration, the laser generated dissipative soliton pulses with pulse duration of 26.38 ps and pulse energy more than 0.25 nJ; output pulses could be compressed externally to 615.7 fs. Moreover, the self-starting mode-locking operation of this laser exhibited a high …
We investigate numerically interactions between two in-phase or out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in Kerr and saturable nonlinear media in one transverse dimension. We discuss different cases in which the beams with different intensities are launched into the medium, but accelerate in opposite directions. Since both the Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams possess infinite oscillating tails, we discuss interactions between truncated beams, with finite energies. During interactions we see solitons and soliton pairs generated that are not accelerating. In general, t…
Criteria for experimental observation of multi-dimensional optical solitons in media with saturable refractive nonlinearities are developed. The criteria are applied to actual material parameters (characterizing the cubic self-focusing and quintic self-defocusing nonlinearities, two-photon loss, and optical-damage threshold) for various glasses. This way, we identify operation windows for soliton formation in these glasses. It is found that two-photon absorption sets stringent limits on the windows. We conclude that, while a well-defined window of parameters exists for two-dimensional solitons…
We introduce a new type of synthetic saturable absorbers based on quantum inspired photonic arrays whose linear light transport characteristics can be derived via bosonic algebra. We demonstrate that the interplay between optical Kerr nonlinearity, interference effects and non-Hermiticity through radiation loss leads to a nonlinear optical filtering response with two distinct regimes of small and large optical transmissions. More interestingly, we show that the boundary between these two regimes can be very sharp. The threshold optical intensity that marks this abrupt "phase transition" and it…
We demonstrate a novel approach to achieve wavelength-tunable ultrashort pulses from an all-fiber mode-locked laser with a saturable absorber based on nonlinear Kerr beam clean-up effect. This saturable absorber was formed by a single-mode fiber spliced to a graded-index multimode fiber, and its tunable band-pass filter effect is studied by a numerical model. By adjusting the bending condition of graded-index multimode fiber, the laser could produce dissipative soliton pulses with their central wavelength tunable from1040 nm to 1063 nm. The pulse width of output laser could be compressed exter…
Inclusion of the instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity in the FDTD framework leads to implicit equations that have to be solved iteratively. In principle, explicit integration can be achieved with the use of anharmonic oscillator equations, but it tends to be unstable and inappropriate for studying strong-field phenomena like laser filamentation. In this paper, we show that nonlinear susceptibility can be provided instead by a harmonic oscillator driven by a nonlinear force, chosen in a way to reproduce the polarization obtained from the solution of the quantum mechanical two level equations. The re…
Quantitative analysis of slow light experiments utilising coherent population oscillation (CPO) in a range of saturably absorbing media, including ruby and alexandrite, Er3+:Y2SiO5, bacteriorhodopsin, semi-conductor quantum devices and erbium doped optical fibres, shows that the observations may be more simply interpreted as saturable absorption phenomena. A basic two-level model of a saturable absorber displays all the effects normally associated with slow light, namely phase shift and modulation gain of the transmitted signal, hole burning in the modulation frequency spectrum and power broad…
AgInSe2 nanorods (NRs) with diameter of 15 nm have been investigated for their nonlinear optical responses by using Z-scan and transient absorption techniques with femtosecond laser pulses of photon energy greater than the bandgap. At excitation irradiance of 20 GW/cm2, AgInSe2 NRs reveal saturation in the nonlinear absorption and optical Kerr nonlinearity with a recovery time determined to be a few ten picoseconds. Such large saturable absorption and Kerr nonlinearity exhibit a third-order susceptibility of 1.2 x 10-8 esu and a figure of merit of 0.04 esu.cm.s-1, making AgInSe2 NRs a promisin…
This technical note describes the physical model, numerical implementation, and validation of multilevel atomic media for lasers and saturable absorbers in Meep: a free/open-source finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) software package for electromagnetics simulation. Simulating multilevel media in the time domain involves coupling rate equations for the populations of electronic energy levels with Maxwell's equations via a generalization of the Maxwell--Bloch equations. We describe the underlying equations and their implementation using a second-order discretization scheme, and also demonstrat…
We report results for solitons in models of waveguides with focusing or defocusing saturable nonlinearity and a parity-time(PT )-symmetric complex-valued external potential of the Scarf-II type. The model applies to the nonlinear wave propagation in graded-index optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We find both fundamental and multipole solitons for both focusing and defocusing signs of the saturable nonlinearity in such PT -symmetric waveguides. The dependence of the propagation constant on the soliton's power is presented for different strengths of the nonlinearity saturation, S. …
Dissipative structures are the result of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a dynamic open system, which is induced by either the nonlinear effect or loss fluctuations. While optical temporal dissipative solitons in nonlinear Kerr cavities has been widely studied, they are operated in a red-detuned regime that is non-trivial to access. Here, we demonstrate an emergent dissipative soliton state in optical cavities in the presence of loss fluctuations, which is accessible by self-evolution of the system and is operated in resonance. We numerically investigate both the effect of loss modulation and…
We present the study of a proof-of-concept integrated device that can be used as a nonlinear broadband isolator. The device is based on the asymmetric loading of a highly-confining silicon-slot photonic coupler with graphene layers, whose ultrafast and low-threshold saturable absorption can be exploited for nonreciprocal transmission between the cross-ports of the coupler. The structure is essentially a non-Hermitian system, whose exceptional points are briefly discussed. The nonlinear device is modeled with a coupled Schrodinger equation system whose validity is checked by full-vector finite …
Plane waves in Kerr media spontaneously generate paraxial X-waves (i.e. non-dispersive and non-diffractive pulsed beams) that get amplified along propagation. This effect can be considered a form of conical emission (i.e. spatio-temporal modulational instability), and can be used as a key for the interpretation of the out of axis energy emission in the splitting process of focused pulses in normally dispersive materials. A new class of spatio-temporal localized wave patterns is identified. X-waves instability, and nonlinear X-waves, are also expected in periodical Bose condensed gases.
It is studied the bright spatial solitons in nonlocal defocusing Kerr media with parity-time (PT) symmetric potentials. We find that these solitons can exist and be stable over a different range of potential parameters. The influence of the degree of nonlocality on the solitons and the transverse energy flow within the stable solitons are also examined.
We investigate numerically the propagation and the Anderson localization of plane waves in a one-dimensional lattice chain, where disorder and saturable nonlinearity are simultaneously present. Using a calculation scheme for solving the stationary discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the fixed input case, the disorder-averaged logarithmic transmittance and the localization length are calculated in a numerically precise manner. The localization length is found to be a nonmonotonic function of the incident wave intensity, acquiring a minimum value at a certain finite intensity, due to satu…
We report a novel spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon and ghost states existed in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger (FNLS) equation with focusing saturable nonlinearity and PT-symmetric potential. The continuous asymmetric soliton branch bifurcates from the fundamental symmetric one as the power exceeds some critical value. Intriguingly, the symmetry of fundamental solitons is broken into two branches of asymmetry solitons (alias ghost states) with complex conjugate propagation constants, which is solely in fractional media. Besides, the dipole (antisymmetry) and tripo…
We show that an azimuthally-periodically-modulated bright ring "necklace" beam can self-trap in self-focusing Kerr media and can exhibit stable propagation for very large distances. These are the first bright (2+1) D beams to exhibit stable self-trapping in a system described by the cubic (2+1) D Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE).
We report on the stationary and robust propagation of light beams with rather arbitrary and controllable intensity and dissipation transverse patterns in self-focusing Kerr media with nonlinear absorption. When nonlinear absorption is due to multi-photon ionization at high beam powers in transparent media such as glasses or air, these beams can generate multiple plasma channels with tailored geometries. Their nature and spatial characteristics are discussed in detail, as well as the laws determining their spontaneous formation from coherent superpositions of Bessel beams of different amplitude…
The Kerr nonlinear optical performance of silicon nanowire waveguides integrated with 2D layered graphene oxide (GO) films is theoretically studied and optimized based on experimentally measured linear and nonlinear optical parameters of the GO films. The strong mode overlap between the silicon nanowires and highly nonlinear GO films yields a significantly enhanced Kerr nonlinearity for the hybrid waveguides. A detailed analysis for the influence of waveguide geometry and GO film thickness on the propagation loss, nonlinear parameter, and nonlinear figure of merit (FOM) is performed. The resul…
Using the Kantorovitch method in combination with a Gaussian ansatz, we derive the equations of motion for spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal optical propagation in a dispersive Kerr medium with a general transverse and spectral gain profile. By rewriting the variational equations as differential equations for the temporal and spatial Gaussian q parameters, optical ABCD matrices for the Kerr effect, a general transverse gain profile and nonparabolic spectral gain filtering are obtained. Further effects can easily be taken into account by adding the corresponding ABCD matrices. Applications i…
We study the nonlinear propagation of diffraction-free, space-time wave packets, also called time-diffracting beams because their spatiotemporal structure reproduces diffraction in time. We report on the spontaneous formation of propagation-invariant, spatiotemporally compressed pulsed beams carrying finite power from exciting time-diffracting Gaussian beams in media with cubic Kerr nonlinearity at powers below the critical power for collapse, and also with other collapse-arresting nonlinearities above the critical power. Their attraction property makes the experimental observation of the self…
By use of an imaging spectrometer we map the far-field ($θ-λ$) spectra of 200 fs optical pulses that have undergone beam collapse and filamentation in a Kerr medium. By studying the evolution of the spectra with increasing input power and using a model based on stationary linear asymptotic wave modes, we are able to trace a consistent model of optical beam collapse high-lighting the interplay between conical emission, multiple pulse splitting and other effects such as spatial chirp.
We investigate the spatially and temporally resolved four-wave mixing of terahertz fields and optical pulses in large band-gap dielectrics, such as diamond. We show that it is possible to perform beam profiling and space-time resolved mapping of terahertz fields with sub-wavelength THz resolution by encoding the spatial information into an optical signal, which can then be recorded by a standard CCD camera.
Under strong laser illumination, few-layer graphene exhibits both a transmittance increase due to saturable absorption and a nonlinear phase shift. Here, we unambiguously distinguish these two nonlinear optical effects and identify both real and imaginary parts of the complex nonlinear refractive index of graphene. We show that graphene possesses a giant nonlinear refractive index n2=10-7cm2W-1, almost nine orders of magnitude larger than bulk dielectrics. We find that the nonlinear refractive index decreases with increasing excitation flux but slower than the absorption. This suggests that gr…
We study the interaction of a co-propagating finite energy Airy pulse and a soliton in a Kerr medium under third order dispersion. It is observed that a strong radiation appears when selfaccelerating Airy pulse collides with a delayed soliton in time domain. We confirm both analytically and numerically that this radiation can only be initiated in the environment of third order dispersion (TOD). The radiation frequency is red or blue shifted depending on the numeric sign of TOD parameter. We adopt a simple Si-based waveguide to validate the normalised parameter that we use for the analysis. We …
We elaborate a new solution for the problem of stable propagation of transversely localized vortex beams in homogeneous optical media with self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity. Stationary nonlinear Bessel-vortex states are stabilized against azimuthal breakup and collapse by multiphoton absorption, while the respective power loss is offset by the radial influx of the power from an intrinsic reservoir. A linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations reveal a region of stability of these vortices. Beams with multiple vorticities have their stability regions too. These beams can then form…
We present a detailed experimental investigation, which uncovers the nature of light bullets generated from self-focusing in a bulk dielectric medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. By high dynamic range measurements of three-dimensional intensity profiles, we demonstrate that the light bullets consist of a sharply localized high-intensity core, which carries the self-compressed pulse and contains approximately 25% of the total energy, and a ring-shaped spatiotemporal periphery. Sub-diffractive propagation along with dispersive broadening of the light …
Propagation of the TE electromagnetic waves in self-focusing medium is governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. In this paper the stationary solutions of this equation have been systematically presented. The phase-plane method, qualitative analysis, and mechanical interpretation of the differential equations are widely used. It is well known that TE waves can be guided by the single interface between two semi-infinite media, providing that one of the media has a self-focusing (Kerr type) nonlinearity. This special solution is called a spatial soliton. In this paper our interests are no…
We address the formation and propagation of multi-spot soliton packets in saturable Kerr nonlinear media with an imprinted harmonic transverse modulation of the refractive index. We show that, in sharp contrast to homogeneous media where stable multi-peaked solitons do not exist, the photonic lattices support stable higher-order structures in the form of soliton packets, or soliton trains. Intuitively, such trains can be viewed as made of several lowest order solitons bound together with appropriate relative phases and their existence as stable objects puts forward the concept of compact manip…
A quantum theory of 3D X-shaped optical bullets in Kerr media is presented. The existence of progressive undistorted squeezed vacuum is predicted. Applications to quantum non-demolition experiments, entanglement and interferometers for gravitational waves detection are envisaged.
In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate the evolution of the optical vortex beams of different topological charges propagating in engineered nano-colloidal suspension of negative polarizability with saturable nonlinearities. Due to the high power of the incident beam, the modulation instability leads to an exponential growth of weak perturbations and thus splits the original vortex beam into a necklace beam consisting of several bright spots. The number of observed bright spots is intrinsically determined by the topological charge of the incident beam and agrees well with the predictions…
A scalar Wigner distribution function for describing polarized light is proposed in analogy with the treatment of spin variables in quantum kinetic theory. The formalism is applied to the propagation of circularly polarized light in nonlinear Kerr media and an extended phase space evolution equation is derived along with invariant quantities. We further consider modulation instability as well as the extension to partially coherent fields.
We introduce a mechanism to stabilize spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr nonlinear media, based on the dispersion of linear coupling between the field components forming the soliton states. Specifically, we consider solitons in a two-core guiding structure with inter-core coupling dispersion (CD). We show that CD profoundly affects properties of the solitons, causing the complete stabilization of the otherwise highly unstable spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr media with focusing nonlinearity. We also find that the presence of CD stimulates the formation of bound states, which however are unstable.
Two nonlinear Kerr oscillators mutually coupled by parametric pumping are studied as a source of states entangled in photon numbers. Temporal evolution of entanglement quantified by negativity shows the effects of sudden death and birth of entanglement. Entanglement is preserved even in asymptotic states under certain conditions. The role of reservoirs at finite temperature in entanglement evolution is elucidated. Relation between generation of entangled states and violation of Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for oscillator intensities is found.
The dynamics of the modulation instability induced by cross phase modulation is studied by considering the influence of the walk-off and noninstantaneous response effects for two copropagating optical fields travelling in the anomalous regime of dispersion. To do so, we make use of extensions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation jointly with the Debye model for polarization, which is shown to be effective and simplified when compared to the implementation of other methods for the noninstantaneous nonlinear response. In analyzing the sideband formation, two bands are observed with different be…
We discuss the modulational instability (MI) of plane waves in nonlocal Kerr media with the sine-oscillation response function, which can model the nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. The results in the framework of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation show that the MI in this system has two extraordinary properties. First, MI exists in both cases of negative Kerr coefficient $(n_{2}<0)$ and positive Kerr coefficient $(n_{2}>0)$. Second, the maximum gain of MI is not affected by the intensity of the plane wave, and the wave number %spatial frequency of the maximu…
The existence of a novel type of solitons in periodic Kerr media constructed as superposition of noninteracting gap-solitons of different kinds (bright, dark and periodic) is first demonstrated. The periodic modulation of the nonlinearity is used to suppress the cross phase modulation between components to allow the superimposed beam to propagate for long distances.
The linear and nonlinear pulse propagations in lifetime-broadened three-state media with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically. Three generic systems of V-, $Λ$-, and $Ξ$-type level configurations are considered and compared. It is shown that in linear propagation regime the SGC in the V-type system can result in a significant change of dispersion and absorption and may be used to completely eliminate the absorption and largely reduce the group velocity of a probe field. However, the SGC has no effect on the dispersion and absorption of the $Λ$- and $Ξ$-type sy…
We systematically investigate the optical analogs of quantum relativistic Jackiw-Rebbi states in binary waveguide arrays in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity with both self-focusing and self-defocusing cases. The localized profiles of these nonlinear Jackiw-Rebbi states can be calculated exactly by using the shooting method. We show that these nonlinear Jackiw-Rebbi states have a very interesting feature which is totally different from all other well-known nonlinear localized structures, including optical solitons. Namely, the profiles of nonlinear JR states with higher peak amplitudes can tot…
We demonstrate that, with the help of a Gaussian potential barrier, dark modes in the form of a local depression ("bubbles") can be supported by the repulsive Kerr nonlinearity in combination with fractional dimension. Similarly, W-shaped modes are supported by a double potential barrier. Families of the modes are constructed in a numerical form, and also by means of the Thomas-Fermi and variational approximations. All these modes are stable, which is predicted by computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations and confirmed by direct numerical simulations.
In a disordered medium with Kerr-type nonlinearity, the transmitted speckle pattern was predicted to become unstable, as a result of the positive feedback between the intensity fluctuations and the nonlinear dependence of the local refractive index. We present the first experimental evidence of speckle instability of light transversally scattered in a liquid crystal cell. A two-dimensional controlled disorder is imprinted in the medium through a suitable illumination of a photoconductive wall of the cell, whereas the nonlinear response is obtained through optical reorientation of the liquid cr…
We consider the optical theorem for scattering of electromagnetic waves in nonlinear media. This result is used to obtain the power extinguished from a field by a nonlinear scatterer. The cases of second harmonic generation and the Kerr effect are studied in some detail. Applications to nonlinear apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy are considered.
We present a novel laser mode-locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse sha…
Powerful incoherent laser pulses can propagate in focusing Kerr media much longer distances than can coherent pulses, due to the fast phase mixing that prevents transverse filamentation. This distance is limited by 4-wave scattering, which accumulates waves at small transverse wavenumbers, where phase mixing is too slow to retain the incoherence and thus prevent the filamentation. However, we identify how this theoretical limit can be overcome by countering this accumulation through transverse heating of the pulse by random fluctuations of the refractive index. In these new regimes, the laser …
We report the existence of persistently rotating azimuthons in media with self-focusing Kerr and absorption nonlinearities. The nonlinear loss is balanced by power influx from the peripheral reservoir stored in slowly decaying tails of the azimuthons. These modes are excited by a superposition of two Bessel beams with opposite vorticities, $\pm s$, and slightly different conicities. The excited azimuthon exhibits opposite vorticity in its center to that of the input Bessel-beam superposition due to spontaneous inversion of the topological charge in the course of the azimuthon formation. Unlike…
We investigate the mobility of nonlinear localized modes in a generalized discrete Ginzburg-Landau type model, describing a one-dimensional waveguide array in an active Kerr medium with intrinsic, saturable gain and damping. It is shown that exponentially localized, traveling discrete dissipative breather-solitons may exist as stable attractors supported only by intrinsic properties of the medium, i.e., in absence of any external field or symmetry-breaking perturbations. Through an interplay by the gain and damping effects, the moving soliton may overcome the Peierls-Nabarro barrier, present i…
Microcavity solitons enable miniaturized coherent frequency comb sources. However, the formation of microcavity solitons can be disrupted by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), particularly in the emerging crystalline microcomb materials with high Raman gain. Here, we propose and implement dissipation control---tailoring the energy dissipation of selected cavity modes---to purposely raise/lower the threshold of Raman lasing in a strongly Raman-active lithium niobate microring resonator, and realize on-demand soliton mode-locking or Raman lasing. Numerical simulations are carried out to confirm …
Thermo-optical effects cause a bifocusing of incoming beams in optical media, due to the birefringence created by a thermal lens that can resolve the incoming beams into two-component signals of different polarizations. We propose a non-perturbative theoretical description of the process of formation of double-pulse solitons in Kerr optical media with a thermally-induced birefringence, based on solving simultaneously the heat equation and the propagation equation for a beam in a one-dimensional medium with uniform heat flux load. By means of a non-isospectral Inverse Scattering Transform assum…

The ultrafast optical Kerr effect (OKE) is widely used to investigate the structural dynamics and interactions of liquids, solutions and solids by observing their intrinsic nonlinear temporal responses through nearly-collinear four-wave mixing (FWM). Non-degenerate mixing schemes allow for background free detection and can provide information on the interplay between a material's internal degrees of freedom. Here we show a source of temporal dynamics in the OKE signal that is not reflective of the intrinsic nonlinear response but arises from group index and momentum mismatch. It is observed in…
Onset of the instability of a multiple-scattering speckle pattern in a random medium with Kerr nonlinearity is significantly affected by the noninstantaneous character of the nonlinear medium response. The fundamental time scale of the spontaneous speckle dynamics beyond the instability threshold is set by the largest of times $T_{\mathrm{D}}$ and $τ_{\mathrm{NL}}$, where $T_{\mathrm{D}}$ is the time required for the multiple-scattered waves to propagate through the random sample and $τ_{\mathrm{NL}}$ is the relaxation time of the nonlinearity. Inertial nature of the nonlinearity should compli…
We discover that at the edge of optical lattice imprinted in saturable nonlinear media one-dimensional surface solitons exist only within a band of light intensities, and that they cease to exist when the lattice depth exceeds an upper threshold. We also reveal the generation of arrays of two-dimensional surface solitons mediated by transverse modulational instability of one-dimensional solitons, a process that is found to exhibit specific features associated to properties of the optical lattice.
