The motion of an ion in a coherent lower hybrid wave (characterized by |k_parallel| << |k_perp| and omega >> Omega_i) in a tokamak plasma is studied. For ions satisfying v_perp > omega/k_perp, the Lorentz force law for the ions is reduced to a set of difference equations which give the Larmor radius and phase of an ion on one cyclotron orbit in terms of these quantities a cyclotron period earlier. From these difference equations an earlier result [Phys. Fluids 21, 1584 (1978)] that above a certain wave amplitude the ion motion is stochastic, is readily obtained. The stochasticity threshold is given a simple physical interpretation. In addition, the difference equations are used to derive a diffusion equation governing the heating of the ions above the stochasticity threshold. By including the effects of collisions, the heating rate for the bulk ions is obtained.
Heating of figure-8 ions by odd-parity rotating magnetic fields ($RMF_o$) applied to an elongated field-reversed configuration (FRC) is investigated. The largest energy gain occurs at resonances ($s \equiv ω_R/ ω$) of the $RMF_o$ frequency, $ω_R$, with the figure-8 orbital frequency, $ω$, and is proportional to $s^2$ for $s-even$ resonances and to $s$ for $s-odd$ resonances. The threshold for the transition from regular to stochastic orbits explains both the onset and saturation of heating. The FRC magnetic geometry lowers the threshold for heating below that in the tokamak by an order of magn…
In the solar atmosphere, the chromospheric and coronal plasmas are much hotter than the visible photosphere. The heating of the solar atmosphere, including the partially ionized chromosphere and corona, remains largely unknown. In this paper we demonstrate that the ions can be substantially heated by Alfvén waves with very low frequencies in partially ionized low beta plasmas. This differs from other Alfvén wave related heating mechanisms such as ion-neutral collisional damping of Alfvén waves and heating described by previous work on resonant Alfvén wave heating. In this paper, we find that t…
Particle-in-cell direct simulation Monte Carlo simulations reveal that ion-acoustic instabilities excited in presheaths can cause significant ion heating. Ion-acoustic instabilities are excited by the ion flow toward a sheath when the neutral gas pressure is small enough and the electron temperature is large enough. A series of 1D simulations were conducted in which neutral plasma (electrons and ions) was uniformly sourced with an ion temperature of 0.026 eV and different electron temperatures (0.1 - 50 eV). Ion heating was observed when the electron-to-ion temperature ratio exceeded the minim…
Magnetic reconnection and associated heating of ions and electrons in strongly magnetised, weakly collisional plasmas are studied by means of gyrokinetic simulations. It is shown that an appreciable amount of the released magnetic energy is dissipated to yield (irreversible) electron and ion heating via phase mixing. Electron heating is mostly localized to the magnetic island, not the current sheet, and occurs after the dynamical reconnection stage. Ion heating is comparable to electron heating only in high-beta plasmas, and results from both parallel phase mixing and perpendicular phase mixin…
Gyrokinetic simulations of magnetic reconnection are presented to investigate plasma heating for strongly magnetized, weakly collisional plasmas. For a low plasma beta case, parallel and perpendicular phase mixing strongly enhance energy dissipation yielding electron heating. Heating occurs for a long time period after a dynamical process of magnetic reconnection ended. For a higher beta case, the ratio of ion to electron dissipation rate increases, suggesting that ion heating (via phase-mixing) may become an important dissipation channel in high beta plasmas.
A fusion reactor requires plasma pre-heating before the rate of deuterium-tritium fusion reactions becomes significant. In ITER, radiofrequency (RF) heating of 3He ions, additionally puffed into the plasma, is one of the main options considered for increasing bulk ion temperature during the ramp-up phase of the pulse. In this paper, we propose an alternative scenario for bulk ion heating with RF waves, which requires no extra 3He puff and profits from the presence of intrinsic Beryllium impurities in the plasma. The discussed method to heat Be impurities in D-T plasmas is shown to provide an e…
Local electron and ion heating characteristics during merging reconnection startup on the MAST spherical tokamak have been revealed for the first time using a 130 channel YAG-TS system and a new 32 chord ion Doppler tomography diagnostic. 2D local profile measurement of $T_e$, $n_e$ and $T_i$ detect highly localized electron heating at the X point and bulk ion heating downstream. For the push merging experiment under high guide field condition, thick layer of closed flux surface formed by reconnected field sustains the heating profile for more than electron and ion energy relaxation time $τ^E_…
The quasilinear model of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heating in a mirror magnetic field predicts essential broadening of the electron distribution function in case of bichromatic wave. This may stabilize kinetic instabilities in the electron-cyclotron frequency range resulting in improved performance of ECR ion sources, the effect which is observed in many independent experiments.
In this experiment, we measure ion temperature evolution of collisional plasma shocks and colliding supersonic plasma flows across a range of species (Ar, Kr, Xe, N), Mach numbers, and collisionalities. Shocks are formed via the collision of discrete plasma jets relevant to plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF). We observe nearly classical ion shock heating and ion-electron equilibration, with peak temperatures attained consistent with collisional shock heating. We also observe cases where this heating occurs in a smooth merged structure with reduced density gradients due to signif…
We study electron heating in collisionless current-driven turbulence due to the nonlinear interactions between electron- and ion-acoustic waves. PIC simulation results show that due to a large difference between the electron and ion mean velocities the Buneman instability excites large-amplitude ion-acoustic waves, which strongly modifies the electron velocity distribution function, leading to a secondary instability that generates fast electron-acoustic waves; and in this process, a giant electron hole is ultimately created. This giant electron hole is responsible for strong electron heating …
Heavy (O+) ion energization and field-aligned motion in and near the ionosphere are still not well understood. Based on observations from the CASSIOPE Enhanced Polar Outflow Probe (e-POP) at altitudes between 325 km and 730 km over one year, we present a statistical study (24 events) of ion heating and its relation to field-aligned ion bulk flow velocity, low-frequency waves and field-aligned currents (FACs). The ion temperature and field-aligned bulk flow velocity are derived from 2-D ion velocity distribution functions measured by the suprathermal electron imager (SEI) instrument. Consistent…
Scaling laws for the transport and heating of trace heavy ions in low-frequency, magnetized plasma turbulence are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. The predicted dependences of turbulent fluxes and heating on ion charge and mass number are found to agree with numerical results for both stationary and differentially rotating plasmas. Heavy ion momentum transport is found to increase with mass, and heavy ions are found to be preferentially heated, implying a mass-dependent ion temperature for very weakly collisional plasmas and for partially-ionized heavy ions in strongly r…

The onset of the acceleration of ions during magnetic reconnection is explored via particle-in-cell simulations in the limit of a strong ambient guide field that self-consistently and simultaneously follow the motions of protons and $α$ particles. Heating parallel to the local magnetic field during reconnection with a guide field is strongly reduced compared with the reconnection of anti-parallel magnetic fields. The dominant heating of thermal ions during guide field reconnection results from pickup behavior of ions during their entry into reconnection exhausts and dominantly produces heating…
We investigate bulk ion heating in solid buried layer targets irradiated by ultra-short laser pulses of relativistic intensities using particle-in-cell simulations. Our study focuses on a CD2-Al-CD2 sandwich target geometry. We find enhanced deuteron ion heating in a layer compressed by the expanding aluminium layer. A pressure gradient created at the Al-CD2 interface pushes this layer of deuteron ions towards the outer regions of the target. During its passage through the target, deuteron ions are constantly injected into this layer. Our simulations suggest that the directed collective outwar…
Direct coupling of the fast magnetosonic wave to the electrons has been studied on the tokamak TORE SUPRA. Preliminary experiments were dedicated to optimise the scenario for Fast Wave Electron Heating (FWEH) and Current Drive (FWCD). In a first part, thermal kinetic and diamagnetic energy are compared when fast wave is applied to the plasma in two different regimes: 1/ the minority hydrogen heating scenario (ICRH), 2/ the direct electron damping. Effects of ion resonant layers, marginally present in the plasma in the later regime (FWEH), is then presented and discussed.
Negative ion production with conventional multicusp plasma chambers utilizing 2.45 GHz microwave heating is demonstrated. The experimental results were obtained with the multicusp plasma chambers and extraction systems of the RFdriven RADIS ion source and the filament driven arc discharge ion source LIISA. A waveguide microwave coupling system, which is almost similar to the one used with the SILHI ion source, was used. The results demonstrate that at least one third of negative ion beam obtained with inductive RF-coupling (RADIS) or arc discharge (LIISA) can be achieved with 1 kW of 2.45 GHz …
The measured spectrum of kinetic Alfven wave fluctuations in the turbulent solar wind plasma is used to calculate the electron and ion distribution functions resulting from quasi-linear diffusion. The modified ion distribution function is found to be unstable to long wavelength electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. These waves pitch angle scatter the parallel ion velocity into perpendicular velocity which effectively increases the perpendicular ion temperature.
It is shown that in low-beta, weakly collisional plasmas, such as the solar corona, some instances of the solar wind, the aurora, inner regions of accretion discs, their coronae, and some laboratory plasmas, Alfvénic fluctuations produce no ion heating within the gyrokinetic approximation, i.e., as long as their amplitudes (at the Larmor scale) are small and their frequencies stay below the ion Larmor frequency (even as their spatial scales can be above or below the ion Larmor scale). Thus, all low-frequency ion heating in such plasmas is due to compressive fluctuations ("slow modes"). Because…
We study the onset of electron heating in intense laser-solid interactions and its impact on the spectral quality of radiation pressure accelerated ions in both hole boring and light sail regimes. Two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed over a wide range of laser and target parameters and reveal how the pulse duration, profile, polarization, and target surface stability control the electron heating, the dominant ion acceleration mechanisms, and the ion spectra. We find that the onset of strong electron heating is associated with the growth of the Rayleigh-Ta…
Using a kilojoule class laser, we demonstrate for the first time that high-contrast picosecond pulses are advantageous for ion acceleration. We show that a laser pulse with optimum duration and a large focal spot accelerates electrons beyond the ponderomotive energy. This anomalous electron heating enables efficient ion acceleration reaching 52 MeV at an intensity of 1.2X10^19 Wcm^-2. The proton energy observed agrees quantitatively with a one-dimensional plasma expansion model newly developed by taking the anomalous heating effect into account. The heating process is confirmed by both measure…
In a recent experiment on the Trident laser facility, a laser-driven beam of quasi-monoenergetic aluminum ions was used to heat solid gold and diamond foils isochorically to 5.5 eV and 1.7 eV, respectively. Here theoretical calculations are presented that suggest the gold and diamond were heated uniformly by these laser-driven ion beams. According to calculations and SESAME equation-of-state tables, laser-driven aluminum ion beams achievable on Trident, with a finite energy spread of (delta E)/E ~ 20%, are expected to heat the targets more uniformly than a beam of 140 MeV aluminum ions with ze…
The Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX) is a steady state linear device with the goal to perform plasma material interaction (PMI) studies at future fusion reactor relevant conditions. A prototype of MPEX referred as Porto-MPEX is designed to carry out research and development related to source, heating and transport concepts on the planned full MPEX device. The auxiliary heating schemes in MPEX are based on cyclotron resonance heating with radio frequency (RF) waves. Ion cyclotron heating (ICH) and electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in MPEX are used to independently heat the ions and ele…
In the innermost regions of low-luminosity accretion flows, including Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy, the frequency of Coulomb collisions is so low that the plasma is two-temperature, with the ions substantially hotter than the electrons. This paradigm assumes that Coulomb collisions are the only channel for transferring the ion energy to the electrons. In this work, the second of a series, we assess the efficiency of electron heating by ion velocity-space instabilities in collisionless accretion flows. The instabilities are seeded by the pressure anisotropy induced by magnetic field ampli…
Minor ion (such as $He^{2+}$) heating via nonresonant interaction with spectra of linearly and circularly polarized Alfvén waves (LPAWs and CPAWs hereafter) is studied. The obtained analytic solutions are in good agreement with the simulation results, indicating that newborn ions are heated by low-frequency Alfvén waves with finite amplitude in low-beta plasmas such as the solar corona. The analytic solutions also reproduce the preferential heating of heavy ions in the solar wind. In the presence of parallel propagating Alfvén waves, turbulence-induced particle motion is clearly observed in th…
Remote sensing observations of coronal holes show that heavy ions are hotter than protons and their temperature is anisotropic. In-situ observations of fast solar wind streams provide direct evidence for turbulent Alfvén wave spectrum, left-hand polarized ion-cyclotron waves, and He$^{++}$ -- proton drift in the solar wind plasma, which can produce temperature anisotropies by resonant absorption and perpendicular heating of the ions. Furthermore, the solar wind is expected to be inhomogeneous on decreasing scales approaching the Sun. We study the heating of solar wind ions in inhomogeneous pla…
Hydrogen majority plasmas will be used in the initial non-activated phase of ITER operation. Optimizing ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) in such scenarios will help in achieving H-mode in these plasmas. Past JET experiments with the carbon wall revealed a significant impact of intrinsic impurities on the ICRH performance in (3He)-H plasmas relevant for the full-field initial ITER phase. High plasma contamination with carbon impurities resulted in the appearance of a supplementary mode conversion layer and significant reduction in the transition concentration of 3He minority ions, defined…
How ions are energized and heated is a fundamental problem in the study of energy dissipation in magnetized plasmas. In particular, the heating of heavy ions (including ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$, ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$ and others) has been a constant concern for understanding the microphysics of impulsive solar flares. In this article, via two-dimensional hybrid-kinetic Particle-in-Cell simulations, we study the heating of Helium ions (${}^{4}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$) by turbulence driven by cascading waves launched at large scales from the left-handed polarized Helium ion cyclotron wave branch of a…

The results of experimental and theoretical study of anomalous attenuation of probe extraordinary waves in experiments on modification of ionosphere by powerful HF waves on "Sura" heating facility are presented. The experimental data indicate significant attenuation of extraordinary waves which can be explained as a result of multiple scattering of extraordinary waves on small-scale random irregularities. The possibility of diagnostics of spectrum of artificial irregularities from measurements of anomalous attenuation of extraordinary waves is demonstrated.
Whether the phenomenology governing MHD turbulence is Kolmogorov or Iroshnikov-Kraichnan (IK) remains an open question, theoretically as well as observationally. The ion heating profile observed in the solar wind provides a quantitative, if indirect, observational constraint on the relevant phenomenology. Recently, a solar wind heating model based on Kolmogorov spectral scaling has produced reasonably good agreement with observations, provided the effect of turbulence generation due to pickup ions is included in the model. Without including the pickup ion contributions, the Kolmogorov scaling …
We propose an efficient mechanism to heat a plasma by an intense microwave field solving the equation of ion motion in a wave field and a constant magnetic field in a large coupling regime. The mechanism does not relies explicitly on stochastic motion and is able to increase the ion velocity by several magnitude orders. Known thresholds for the onset of stochastic motion are also obtained.
Dependence of the energy of ions accelerated during interaction of the laser pulse obliquelly incident on the thin foil target on the laser polarization is studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the ion energy being maximal for the p-polarization gradually decreases when the pulse becomes s-polarized. The experimentally found dependences of the ion energy are explained by invoking the anomalous electron heating which results in high electrostatic potential formation at the target surface. Anomalous heating of electrons beyond the energy of quiver motion in the laser field is d…
The decay of the solar wind helium to hydrogen temperature ratio due to Coulomb thermalization can be used to measure how far from the Sun strong preferential ion heating occurs. Previous work has shown that a zone of preferential ion heating, resulting in mass-proportional temperatures, extends about $20-40 R_\odot$ from the Sun on average. Here we look at the motion of the outer boundary of this zone with time and compare it to other physically meaningful distances. We report that the boundary moves in lockstep with the Alfvén point over the solar cycle, contracting and expanding with solar …
We present three-dimensional, hybrid-kinetic numerical simulations of driven Alfvén-wave turbulence of relevance to the collisionless near-Earth solar wind. Special attention is paid to the spectral transition that occurs near the ion-Larmor scale and to the origins of preferential perpendicular ion heating and of non-thermal wings in the parallel distribution function. Several novel diagnostics are used to show that the ion heating rate increases as the kinetic-Alfvén-wave fluctuations, which comprise the majority of the sub-ion-Larmor turbulent cascade, attain near-ion-cyclotron frequencies.…
We extend previous theories of stochastic ion heating to account for the motion of ions along the magnetic field. We derive an analytic expression for the ion-to-proton perpendicular temperature ratio in the solar wind for any ion species, assuming that stochastic heating is the dominant ion heating mechanism. This expression describes how this temperature ratio depends upon the average velocity of the ions along the magnetic field direction and the ratio of the parallel proton pressure to the magnetic pressure. We compare our model with previously published measurements of alpha particles and…
We present time-resolved measurements of ion heating due to collisional plasma shocks and interpenetrating supersonic plasma flows, which are formed by the oblique merging of two coaxial-gun-formed plasma jets. Our study was repeated using four jet species: N, Ar, Kr, and Xe. In conditions with small interpenetration between jets, the observed peak ion temperature Ti is consistent with the predictions of collisional plasma-shock theory, showing a substantial elevation of Ti above the electron temperature Te and also the subsequent decrease of Ti on the classical ion-electron temperature-equili…
The SWICS instrument aboard the ACE satellite has detected frequent intervals in the slow solar wind and interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) in which C6+ and other fully stripped ions are strongly depleted, though the ionization states of elements such as Si and Fe indicate that those ions should be present. It has been suggested that these outlier or dropout events can be explained by the resonant cyclotron heating process, because these ions all have the same cyclotron frequency as He2+. We investigate the region in the corona where these outlier events form. It must be above the i…
Plasma ions heating (especially minor heavy ions preferential heating) in fast solar wind and solar corona is an open question in space physics. However, Alfvén waves have been always considered as a candidate of energy source for corona heating. In this paper, by using a two-dimensional (2-D) hybrid simulation model in a low beta electron-proton-alpha plasma system, we have investigated the relationships between plasma ions heating and power spectra evolution of density and magnetic field fluctuations excited from the parametric instabilities of initial pump Alfvén waves with an incoherent sp…
The parametric instability of upper hybrid wave decay into back scattered upper hybrid wave and lower hybrid wave is considered for conditions of inhomogeneous plasma of spherical tokamaks. The possibility of absolute instability is demonstrated and the corresponding threshold is determined. It is shown that the threshold power increases with pump frequency and electron temperature. Threshold power is estimated for typical parameters of experiment in MAST tokamak. It is shown that in this case parametrical reflection arises, if probing power exceeds 90W/cm^2, which gives 30 kW for a beam of 10…
We revisit the theory of stochastic heating of ions and investigate its phase-space signatures in kinetic turbulence of relevance to low-$β$ portions of the solar wind. We retain a full scale-dependent approach in our treatment, and consider the case in which electric-field fluctuations can be described by a generalized Ohm's law that includes Hall and thermo-electric effects. These two electric-field terms provide the dominant contributions to stochastic ion heating when the ion-Larmor scale is much smaller than the ion skin depth, $ρ_{\mathrm{i}}\ll d_{\mathrm{i}}$, which is the case at $β{\…
In systems accreting well below the Eddington rate, the plasma in the innermost regions of the disk is collisionless and two-temperature, with the ions hotter than the electrons. Yet, whether a collisionless faster-than-Coulomb energy transfer mechanism exists in two-temperature accretion flows is still an open question. We study the physics of electron heating during the growth of ion velocity-space instabilities, by means of multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. A large-scale compression - embedded in a novel form of the PIC equations - continuously amplifies the field. This …
The partition of irreversible heating between ions and electrons in compressively driven (but subsonic) collisionless turbulence is investigated by means of nonlinear hybrid gyrokinetic simulations. We derive a prescription for the ion-to-electron heating ratio $Q_\rmi/Q_\rme$ as a function of the compressive-to-Alfvénic driving power ratio $P_\compr/P_\AW$, of the ratio of ion thermal pressure to magnetic pressure $β_\rmi$, and of the ratio of ion-to-electron background temperatures $T_\rmi/T_\rme$. It is shown that $Q_\rmi/Q_\rme$ is an increasing function of $P_\compr/P_\AW$. When the compr…
Heating of trapped ion clouds by interactions with free electrons crossing the trapping potential was observed. A model describing such process was proposed and discussed. The presented approach predicts two effects: pushing and heating of the ions' ensemble by electrons. The former was found to be too weak for observation, however the latter was investigated experimentally. For comparison between experimental results and theoretical predictions, molecular dynamics simulations for various ion ensembles in various temperatures were performed to determine dependence between ion cloud geometry an…
The electron residual energy originated from the stochastic heating in under-dense field-ionized plasma is here investigated. The optical response of plasma is initially modeled by using the concept of two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves. The solution of motion equation of a single electron indicates that by including the ionization, the electron with higher residual energy compared to the case without ionization could be obtained. In agreement with chaotic nature of the motion, it is found that the electron residual energy will significantly be changed by applying a minor change to …
Megaelectron volt (MeV) alpha particles will be the main source of plasma heating in magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Yet, instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvenic instabilities, previously considered as detrimental. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate efficient ion heating in the presence of MeV ions and strong fast-ion driven Alfvenic instabilities in recent experiments on the Joint European Torus (JET). Detailed transport analysis of these experiments with state-of-the-art…
The theory of the ion cyclotron (IC) electrostatic parametric instabilities of plasma which are driven by the elliptically polarized fast wave (FW) of the finite wavelength is developed. The growth rate of the IC quasimode decay instability, which was considered as a potential source of the generation of the high energy ions in scrape-off layer (SOL) during FW injection in tokamaks, is derived analytically for arbitrary values of the FW electric field and wavelengths of the unstable IC perturbations. The comprehensive numerical analysis of the dispersion equation for three wave system which co…
The analysis of the wave content inside a perpendicular bow shock indicates that heating of ions is related to the Lower-Hybrid-Drift (LHD) instability, and heating of electrons to the Electron-Cyclotron-Drift (ECD) instability. Both processes represent stochastic acceleration caused by the electric field gradients on the electron gyroradius scales, produced by the two instabilities. Stochastic heating is a single particle mechanism where large gradients break adiabatic invariants and expose particles to direct acceleration by the DC- and wave-fields. The acceleration is controlled by function…
