Using a kilojoule class laser, we demonstrate for the first time that high-contrast picosecond pulses are advantageous for ion acceleration. We show that a laser pulse with optimum duration and a large focal spot accelerates electrons beyond the ponderomotive energy. This anomalous electron heating enables efficient ion acceleration reaching 52 MeV at an intensity of 1.2X10^19 Wcm^-2. The proton energy observed agrees quantitatively with a one-dimensional plasma expansion model newly developed by taking the anomalous heating effect into account. The heating process is confirmed by both measurements with an electron spectrometer and a one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. By extending the pulse duration to 6 ps, 5% energy conversion efficiency to protons (50 J out of 1 kJ laser energy) is achieved with an intensity of 10^18-Wcm^-2. The present results are quite encouraging for realizing ion-driven fast ignition and novel ion beamlines.
The collision of two expanding plasma clouds is investigated, emphasizing instabilities and electron energization in the plasma mixing layer. This work is directly relevant to laboratory experiments with explosively-created laser or z-pinch plasmas but may also elucidate naturally occurring plasma collisions in astrophysical or space physics contexts. In the previous publications [1,2] we have studied, analytically and numerically, the flow emerging from interpenetrating coronas launched by two parallel wires vaporized in a vacuum chamber. The main foci of the studies have been on the general …
We analyze a new mechanism for the creation and confinement of energetic electrons in a mirror-configuration plasma. A Fermi-Ulam-type process, driven by end-localized coherent electrostatic oscillations, provides axial acceleration while a natural non-adiabaticity of μ provides phase decorrelation and energy isotropization. This novel 2-D combination causes the electron energy distribution function, calculated with a diffusive-loss model, to assume a Maxwellian shape with the μ non-adiabaticity reducing loss-cone escape and annulling the absolute-barrier energy-limiting Chirikov criterion of …
We study the onset of electron heating in intense laser-solid interactions and its impact on the spectral quality of radiation pressure accelerated ions in both hole boring and light sail regimes. Two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed over a wide range of laser and target parameters and reveal how the pulse duration, profile, polarization, and target surface stability control the electron heating, the dominant ion acceleration mechanisms, and the ion spectra. We find that the onset of strong electron heating is associated with the growth of the Rayleigh-Ta…
The interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with solids is largely affected by the plasma gradient at the vacuum-solid interface, which modifies the absorption and ultimately, controls the energy distribution function of heated electrons. A micrometer scale-length plasma has been predicted to yield a significant enhancement of the energy and weight of the fast electron population and to play a major role in laser-driven proton acceleration with thin foils. We report on recent experimental results on proton acceleration from laser interaction with foil targets at ultra-relativistic intensities…

The results of experimental and theoretical study of anomalous attenuation of probe extraordinary waves in experiments on modification of ionosphere by powerful HF waves on "Sura" heating facility are presented. The experimental data indicate significant attenuation of extraordinary waves which can be explained as a result of multiple scattering of extraordinary waves on small-scale random irregularities. The possibility of diagnostics of spectrum of artificial irregularities from measurements of anomalous attenuation of extraordinary waves is demonstrated.
We discuss electron acceleration and heating during collisionless magnetic reconnection by using the results of implicit kinetic simulations of Harris current sheets. We consider and compare electron dynamics in plasmas with different βvalues and perform simulations up to the physical mass ratio. We analyze the typical trajectory of electrons passing through the reconnection region, we study the electron velocity, focusing on the out-of-plane velocity, and we discuss the electron heating along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions.
Modelling of impurity heating during reconnections in a Reverse Field Pinch device as due to parallel electric field acceleration and chaos-induced thermalization
Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations from the Earth's bow shock, we have identified two plasma heating processes that operate at quasi-perpendicular shocks. Ions are subject to stochastic heating in a process controlled by the heating function $χ_j = m_j q_j^{-1} B^{-2}\mathrm{div}(\mathbf{E}_\perp)$ for particles with mass $m_j$ and charge $q_j$ in the electric and magnetic fields $\mathbf{E}$ and $\mathbf{B}$. Test particle simulations are employed to identify the parameter ranges for bulk heating and stochastic acceleration of particles in the tail of the distribution funct…
The heating of electrons in collisionless magnetic reconnection is explored in particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with non-zero guide fields so that electrons remain magnetized. In this regime electric fields parallel to B accelerate particles directly while those perpendicular to B do so through gradient-B and curvature drifts. The curvature drift drives parallel heating through Fermi reflection while the gradient B drift changes the perpendicular energy through betatron acceleration. We present simulations in which we evaluate each of these mechanisms in space and time in order to quantify t…
Particle acceleration and heating at mildly relativistic magnetized shocks in electron-ion plasma are investigated with unprecedentedly high-resolution two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that include ion-scale shock rippling. Electrons are super-adiabatically heated at the shock, and most of the energy transfer from protons to electrons takes place at or downstream of the shock. We are the first to demonstrate that shock rippling is crucial for the energization of electrons at the shock. They remain well below equipartition with the protons. The downstream electron spectra are approx…
A kinetic model for the shock acceleration of ions in laser-produced plasmas is developed. A fraction of the warm ions are accelerated by the large amplitude monotonic potential of the double layer created due the plasma compression and electron heating by the laser. It is found that the amplitude of the large amplitude double layer is almost uniquely defined by the electron temperature. Therefore, a balance between electron heating and plasma compression is needed for optimal ion acceleration by this scheme. Typical Mach numbers of the monotonic shocks are close to 1.5. The scheme could poten…
We present test-particle simulations of electrons during a nonlinear MHD simulation of a type-I edge localized mode (ELM) to explore the effect of an eruptive plasma filament on the kinetic level. The electrons are moderately heated and accelerated during the filamentary eruption on a fast time scale of the order of 0.5 ms. A clearly non-thermal tail is formed in the distribution of the kinetic energy that is of power-law shape and reaches 90 keV for some particles. The acceleration is exclusively observed in the direction parallel to the magnetic field, i.e. with a clear preference in counter…
We present a detailed study of magnetic reconnection in a quasi-two-dimensional pulsed-power driven laboratory experiment. Oppositely directed magnetic fields $(B=3$ T), advected by supersonic, sub-Alfvénic carbon plasma flows $(V_{in}=50$ km/s), are brought together and mutually annihilate inside a thin current layer ($δ=0.6$ mm). Temporally and spatially resolved optical diagnostics, including interferometry, Faraday rotation imaging and Thomson scattering, allow us to determine the structure and dynamics of this layer, the nature of the inflows and outflows and the detailed energy partition…
The theory of the ion cyclotron (IC) electrostatic parametric instabilities of plasma which are driven by the elliptically polarized fast wave (FW) of the finite wavelength is developed. The growth rate of the IC quasimode decay instability, which was considered as a potential source of the generation of the high energy ions in scrape-off layer (SOL) during FW injection in tokamaks, is derived analytically for arbitrary values of the FW electric field and wavelengths of the unstable IC perturbations. The comprehensive numerical analysis of the dispersion equation for three wave system which co…
Dependence of the energy of ions accelerated during interaction of the laser pulse obliquelly incident on the thin foil target on the laser polarization is studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the ion energy being maximal for the p-polarization gradually decreases when the pulse becomes s-polarized. The experimentally found dependences of the ion energy are explained by invoking the anomalous electron heating which results in high electrostatic potential formation at the target surface. Anomalous heating of electrons beyond the energy of quiver motion in the laser field is d…
The present work investigates the acceleration of test particles in balanced and imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence, relevant to the solar-wind problem. These turbulent states, obtained numerically by prescribing the injection rates for the ideal invariants, are evolved dynamically with the particles. While the energy spectrum for balanced and imbalanced states is known, the impact made on particle heating is a matter of debate, with different considerations giving different results. By performing direct numerical simulations, resonant and non-resonant particle accelerations are automatically cons…
A 2D slab approximation of the interactions of electrons with intense linearly polarized laser radiation and static electric and magnetic fields is widely used for both numerical simulations and simplified semi-analytical models. It is shown that in this case electron dynamics can be conveniently described in the framework of 3/2 dimensional Hamiltonian approach. The electron acceleration beyond a standard ponderomotive scaling, caused by the synergistic effects of the laser and static electro-magnetic fields, is due to an onset of stochastic electron motion.
Multiple scattering from artificial random irregularities HF-induced in the ionosphere F region causes significant attenuation of both ordinary and extraordinary radio waves together with the conventional anomalous absorption of ordinary waves due to their conversion into the plasma waves. To study in detail features of this effect, purposeful measurements of the attenuation of weak probing waves of the extraordinary polarization have been performed at the Sura heating facility. Characteristic scale lengths of the involved irregularities are ~0.1-1 km across the geomagnetic field lines. To det…
We developed an experimental platform for studying magnetic reconnection in an external magnetic field with simultaneous measurements of plasma imaging, flow velocity, and magnetic-field variation. Here, we investigate the stagnation and acceleration in counter-streaming plasmas generated by high-power laser beams. A plasma flow perpendicular to the initial flow directions is measured with laser Thomson scattering. The flow is, interestingly, accelerated toward the high-density region, which is opposite to the direction of the acceleration by pressure gradients. This acceleration is possibly i…
The analysis of the wave content inside a perpendicular bow shock indicates that heating of ions is related to the Lower-Hybrid-Drift (LHD) instability, and heating of electrons to the Electron-Cyclotron-Drift (ECD) instability. Both processes represent stochastic acceleration caused by the electric field gradients on the electron gyroradius scales, produced by the two instabilities. Stochastic heating is a single particle mechanism where large gradients break adiabatic invariants and expose particles to direct acceleration by the DC- and wave-fields. The acceleration is controlled by function…

Between the base of the solar corona and the Alfven critical point, the solar-wind density decreases by approximately five orders of magnitude, but the temperature varies by a factor of only a few. In this paper, I show that such quasi-isothermal evolution out to the Alfven critical point is a generic property of outflows powered by reflection-driven Alfven-wave (AW) turbulence, in which outward-propagating AWs partially reflect, and counter-propagating AWs interact to produce a cascade of fluctuation energy to small scales, which leads to turbulent heating. Approximating the sub-Alfvenic regi…
We simulate decaying turbulence in a homogeneous pair plasma using three dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) method. A uniform background magnetic field permeates the plasma such that the magnetic pressure is three times larger than the thermal pressure and the turbulence is generated by counter-propagating shear Alfvén waves. The energy predominately cascades transverse to the background magnetic field, rendering the turbulence anisotropic at smaller scales. We simultaneously move several ion species of varying charge to mass ratios in our simulation and show that the particles…
Where particle acceleration and plasma heating take place in relation to magnetic reconnection is a fundamental question for solar flares. We report analysis of an M7.7 flare on 2012 July 19 observed by SDO/AIA and RHESSI. Bi-directional outflows in forms of plasmoid ejections and contracting cusp-shaped loops originate between an erupting flux rope and underlying flare loops at speeds of typically 200-300 km/s up to 1050 km/s. These outflows are associated with spatially separated double coronal X-ray sources with centroid separation decreasing with energy. The highest temperature is located …
Using Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations at the Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock we demonstrate that electrons are heated by two different mechanisms: a quasi-adiabatic heating process during magnetic field compression, characterized by the isotropic temperature relation $T/B=(T_0/B_0)(B_0/B)^α$ with $α=2/3$ when the electron heating function $|χ_e|<1$, and a stochastic heating process when $|χ_e|>1$. Both processes are controlled by the value of the stochastic heating function $χ_j = m_j q_j^{-1} B^{-2}\mathrm{div}(\mathbf{E}_\perp)$ for particles with mass $m_j$ and charge $q_j$ in…
Particle motion in a cylindrical multiple-cusp magnetic field configuration is shown to be highly (though not completely) chaotic, as expected by analogy with the Sinai billiard. This provides a collisionless, linear mechanism for phase randomization during monochromatic wave heating. A general quasilinear theory of collisionless energy diffusion is developed for particles with a Hamiltonian of the form $H_0+H_1$, motion in the \emph{unperturbed} Hamiltonian $H_0$ being assumed chaotic, while the perturbation $H_1$ can be coherent (i.e. not stochastic). For the multicusp geometry, two heating …
The conversion of magnetic energy into other forms during solar flares is one of the outstanding open problems in solar physics. It is generally accepted that magnetic reconnection plays a crucial role in these conversion processes. To achieve the rapid energy release required in solar flares, an anomalous resistivity, orders of magnitude higher than the Spitzer resistivity, is often used in MHD simulations of reconnection. Spitzer resistivity is based on Coulomb scattering, which becomes negligible at the high energies achieved by accelerated particles. As a result, simulations of particle ac…
The acceleration of solar flare ions during magnetic reconnection is explored via particle-in-cell simulations that self-consistently follow the motions of both protons and $α$ particles. We demonstrate that the dominant ion heating during reconnection with a guide field (a magnetic component perpendicular to the reconnection plane) results from pickup behavior during the entry into reconnection exhausts. In contrast with anti-parallel reconnection, the temperature increment is dominantly transverse, rather than parallel, to the local magnetic field. The comparison of protons and alphas reveal…
Turbulent flows in the solar wind, large scale current sheets, multiple current sheets, and shock waves lead to the formation of environments in which a dense network of current sheets is established and sustains "turbulent reconnection". We constructed a 2D grid on which a number of randomly chosen grid points are acting as scatterers (i.e. magnetic clouds or current sheets). Our goal is to examine how test particles respond inside this large scale collection of scatterers. We study the energy gain of individual particles, the evolution of their energy distribution and their escape time distr…
Seventy measurements of electron heating at the Earth's quasi-perpendicular bow shock are analyzed in terms of Maxwellian-temperatures obtained from fits to the core electrons that separate thermal heating from supra-thermal acceleration. The perpendicular temperatures are both greater and lesser than expected for adiabatic compression. The average parallel and perpendicular heating is the same. These results are explained because, over the electron gyroradius, $δB/B\sim 1$ and $eδϕ/T_e\sim 1$, so electron trajectories are more random and chaotic than adiabatic. Because density fluctuations ar…
The non-thermal acceleration of electrons and ions at an oblique, non-relativistic shock is studied using large scale particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations in one spatial dimension. Physical parameters are selected to highlight the role of electron pre-heating in injection and subsequent acceleration of particles at high Mach number shocks. Simulation results show evidence for the early onset of the diffusive shock acceleration process for both electrons and ions at a highly oblique subluminal shock. Ion acceleration efficiencies of $\lesssim 5\%$ are measured at late times, though this is not th…
Axford and McKenzie [1992] suggested that the energy released in impulsive reconnection events generates high frequency Alfvén waves. The kinetic equation for spectral energy density of waves is derived in the random phase approximation. Solving this equation we find the wave spectrum with the power law ``-1'' in the low frequency range which is matched to the spectrum above the spectral brake with the power low ``-1.6.'' The heating rate of solar wind protons due to the dissipation of Alfvén waves is obtained.
Understanding how the release of stored magnetic energy contributes to the generation of non-thermal high energy particles during solar flares is an important open problem in solar physics. Magnetic reconnection plays a fundamental role in the energy release and conversion processes taking place during flares. A common approach for investigating particle acceleration is to use test particles in fields derived from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of reconnection. These MHD simulations use anomalous resistivities that are much larger than the Spitzer resistivity based on Coulomb collisions…
We study transverse and longitudinal electron heating effects on the target stability and the ion spectra in the radiation pressure dominated regime of ion acceleration by means of multi dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Efficient ion acceleration occurs when the longitudinal electron temperature is kept as low as possible. However, tailoring of the transverse electron temperature is required in view of suppressing the transverse instability, which can keep the target structure intact for longer duration during the acceleration stage. We suggest using the surface erosion of the t…
