The collision of two expanding plasma clouds is investigated, emphasizing instabilities and electron energization in the plasma mixing layer. This work is directly relevant to laboratory experiments with explosively-created laser or z-pinch plasmas but may also elucidate naturally occurring plasma collisions in astrophysical or space physics contexts. In the previous publications [1,2] we have studied, analytically and numerically, the flow emerging from interpenetrating coronas launched by two parallel wires vaporized in a vacuum chamber. The main foci of the studies have been on the general flow pattern and lower-hybrid and thin-shell instabilities that under certain conditions develop in the collision layer. The present paper centers around the initial phase of the interpenetration of the two plasmas. A two-stream ion-ion instability, efficient electron heating, and stochastic acceleration dominate plasma mixing at this phase. Both the adiabatic (reversible) electron heating and stochastic (irreversible) acceleration and heating mechanisms, powered by unstably driven electric fields, are considered. The irreversibility results from a combination of electron runaway acceleration in the wave electric fields and pitch-angle scattering on ions and neutrals.
Particle-in-cell direct simulation Monte Carlo simulations reveal that ion-acoustic instabilities excited in presheaths can cause significant ion heating. Ion-acoustic instabilities are excited by the ion flow toward a sheath when the neutral gas pressure is small enough and the electron temperature is large enough. A series of 1D simulations were conducted in which neutral plasma (electrons and ions) was uniformly sourced with an ion temperature of 0.026 eV and different electron temperatures (0.1 - 50 eV). Ion heating was observed when the electron-to-ion temperature ratio exceeded the minim…

In this work, we investigate the influence of the anisotropic heating on the spontaneous instability and evolution of thin Harris-type collisionless current sheets, embedded in antiparallel magnetic fields. In particular, we explore the influence of the macroparticle shape-function using a 2D version of the PIC code ACRONYM. We also investigate the role of the numerical collisionality due to the finite number of macroparticles in PIC codes. It is shown that it is appropriate to choose higher order shape functions of the macroparticles compared to a larger number of macroparticles per cell. Thi…
Further progress in the development of ECR ion sources (ECRIS) requires deeper understanding of the underlying physics. One of the topics that remains obscure, though being crucial for the performance of the ECRIS, is the electron energy distribution (EED). A well-developed technique of measuring the EED of electrons escaping axially from the magnetically confined plasma of an ECRIS was used for the study of EED in unstable mode of plasma confinement, i.e. in the presence of kinetic instabilities. The experimental data were recorded for pulsed and CW discharges with a room-temperature 14 GHz E…
An experimental investigation of laser produced colliding plasma of aluminium target in the presence of external magnetic field in vacuum is done. Characteristic parameters and line emission of plasma plume in the presence of magnetic field are compared with those for field free case. Axial expansion of the plasma is slowed down in the presence of magnetic field as compared to the field free case. Contrary to the field free case no sharp interaction zone is observed. Higher electron temperature and increased ionic line emission from singly as well as doubly ionized aluminium can be attributed …
The theory of the ion cyclotron (IC) electrostatic parametric instabilities of plasma which are driven by the elliptically polarized fast wave (FW) of the finite wavelength is developed. The growth rate of the IC quasimode decay instability, which was considered as a potential source of the generation of the high energy ions in scrape-off layer (SOL) during FW injection in tokamaks, is derived analytically for arbitrary values of the FW electric field and wavelengths of the unstable IC perturbations. The comprehensive numerical analysis of the dispersion equation for three wave system which co…
The analysis of the wave content inside a perpendicular bow shock indicates that heating of ions is related to the Lower-Hybrid-Drift (LHD) instability, and heating of electrons to the Electron-Cyclotron-Drift (ECD) instability. Both processes represent stochastic acceleration caused by the electric field gradients on the electron gyroradius scales, produced by the two instabilities. Stochastic heating is a single particle mechanism where large gradients break adiabatic invariants and expose particles to direct acceleration by the DC- and wave-fields. The acceleration is controlled by function…
Plasma ions heating (especially minor heavy ions preferential heating) in fast solar wind and solar corona is an open question in space physics. However, Alfvén waves have been always considered as a candidate of energy source for corona heating. In this paper, by using a two-dimensional (2-D) hybrid simulation model in a low beta electron-proton-alpha plasma system, we have investigated the relationships between plasma ions heating and power spectra evolution of density and magnetic field fluctuations excited from the parametric instabilities of initial pump Alfvén waves with an incoherent sp…
We consider the problem of self-regulated heating and cooling in galaxy clusters and the implications for cluster magnetic fields and turbulence. Viscous heating of a weakly collisional magnetised plasma is regulated by the pressure anisotropy with respect to the local direction of the magnetic field. The intracluster medium is a high-beta plasma, where pressure anisotropies caused by the turbulent stresses and the consequent local changes in the magnetic field will trigger very fast microscale instabilities. We argue that the net effect of these instabilities will be to pin the pressure aniso…
The quasilinear model of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heating in a mirror magnetic field predicts essential broadening of the electron distribution function in case of bichromatic wave. This may stabilize kinetic instabilities in the electron-cyclotron frequency range resulting in improved performance of ECR ion sources, the effect which is observed in many independent experiments.
Microscopic instability and macroscopic flow pattern resulting from colliding plasmas are studied analytically in support of laboratory experiments. The plasma flows are assumed to stream radially from two separate centers. In a quasi-planar (2D) geometry, they may arise from an Ohmic explosion of two parallel wires, but similar configurations emerge from other outflows, e.g., colliding winds in binary star systems. One objective of this paper is to characterize the flow instabilities developing near the flow stagnation line. An exact solution for the Buneman-type dispersion equation is obtain…
In systems accreting well below the Eddington rate, the plasma in the innermost regions of the disk is collisionless and two-temperature, with the ions hotter than the electrons. Yet, whether a collisionless faster-than-Coulomb energy transfer mechanism exists in two-temperature accretion flows is still an open question. We study the physics of electron heating during the growth of ion velocity-space instabilities, by means of multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. A large-scale compression - embedded in a novel form of the PIC equations - continuously amplifies the field. This …
In this experiment, we measure ion temperature evolution of collisional plasma shocks and colliding supersonic plasma flows across a range of species (Ar, Kr, Xe, N), Mach numbers, and collisionalities. Shocks are formed via the collision of discrete plasma jets relevant to plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF). We observe nearly classical ion shock heating and ion-electron equilibration, with peak temperatures attained consistent with collisional shock heating. We also observe cases where this heating occurs in a smooth merged structure with reduced density gradients due to signif…
The confinement of energetic particles (EP) is crucial for an efficient heating of tokamak plasmas. Plasma instabilities such as Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can redistribute the EP population making the plasma heating less effective, and leading to additional loads on the walls. The nonlinear dynamics of toroidicity induced AE (TAE) is investigated by means of the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5, within the NEMORB project. The nonperturbative nonlinear interplay of TAEs and EP due to the wave-particle nonlinearity is studied. In particular, we focus on the nonlinear modification of th…
Megaelectron volt (MeV) alpha particles will be the main source of plasma heating in magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Yet, instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvenic instabilities, previously considered as detrimental. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate efficient ion heating in the presence of MeV ions and strong fast-ion driven Alfvenic instabilities in recent experiments on the Joint European Torus (JET). Detailed transport analysis of these experiments with state-of-the-art…
The plasma dynamics resulting from the simultaneous impact, of two equal, ultra-intense laser pulses, in two spatially separated spots, onto a dense target is studied via particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The simulations show that electrons accelerated to relativistic speeds, cross the target and exit at its rear surface. Most energetic electrons are bound to the rear surface by the ambipolar electric field and expand along it. Their current is closed by a return current in the target, and this current configuration generates strong surface magnetic fields. The two electron sheaths collide a…
The use of ultrathin solid foils offers optimal conditions for accelerating protons from laser-matter interactions. When the target is thin enough that relativistic self-induced transparency (RSIT) sets in, all of the target electrons get heated to high energies by the laser, which maximizes the accelerating electric field and therefore the final ion energy. In this work, we first investigate how ion acceleration by ultraintense femtosecond laser pulses in transparent CH$_2$ solid foils is modified when turning from normal to oblique ($45^\circ$) incidence. Due to stronger electron heating, we…
The interaction of two laser pulses in an underdense plasma has proven to be able to inject electrons in plasma waves, thus providing a stable and tunable source of electrons. Whereas previous works focused on the "beatwave" injection scheme in which two lasers with the same polarization collide in a plasma, this present letter studies the effect of polarization and more specifically the interaction of two colliding cross-polarized laser pulses. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that electrons can also be pre-accelerated and injected by the stochastic heating occurring at the c…
Magnetic energy around astrophysical compact objects can strongly dominate over plasma rest mass. Emission observed from these systems may be fed by dissipation of Alfvén wave turbulence, which cascades to small damping scales, energizing the plasma. We use 3D kinetic simulations to investigate this process. When the cascade is excited naturally, by colliding large-scale Alfvén waves, we observe quasithermal heating with no nonthermal particle acceleration. We also find that the particles are energized along the magnetic field lines and so are poor producers of synchrotron radiation. At low pl…
Protons and alpha particles in the fast solar wind are only weakly collisional and exhibit a number of non-equilibrium features, including relative drifts between particle species. Two non-collisional mechanisms have been proposed for limiting differential flow between alpha particles and protons: plasma instabilities and the rotational force. Both mechanisms decelerate the alpha particles. In this paper, we derive an analytic expression for the rate $Q_{\mathrm{flow}}$ at which energy is released by alpha-particle deceleration, accounting for azimuthal flow and conservation of total momentum.…
We numerically study magnetic reconnection on different spatial scales and at different heights in the weakly ionized plasma of the low solar atmosphere (around $300-800$~km above the solar surface) within a reactive 2.5 D multi-fluid plasma-neutral model. We consider a strongly magnetized plasma ($β\sim 6\% $) evolving from a force-free magnetic configuration and perturbed to initialize formation of a reconnection current sheet. On large scales, the resulting current sheets are observed to undergo a secondary 'plasmoid' instability. A series of simulations at different scales demonstrate a ca…
We investigate electrostatic plasma instabilities of Farley-Buneman (FB) type driven by quasi-stationary neutral gas flows in the solar chromosphere. The role of these instabilities in the chromosphere is clarified. We find that the destabilizing ion thermal effect is highly reduced by the Coulomb collisions and can be ignored for the chromospheric FB-type instabilities. On the contrary, the destabilizing electron thermal effect is important and causes a significant reduction of the neutral drag velocity triggering the instability. The resulting threshold velocity is found as function of chrom…
Energetic particles produced by neutral beams are observed to excite energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) in tokamaks. We study the effects of anisotropy of distribution function of the energetic particles on the excitation of such instabilities with ORB5, a gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code. Numerical results are shown for linear electrostatic simulations with ORB5. The growth rate is found to be sensitively dependent on the phase-space shape of the distribution function. The behavior of the instability is qualitatively compared to the theoretical analysis of dispersion r…
This paper develops a unified linear theory of local cross-field plasma instabilities, such as the Farley-Buneman, electron thermal, and ion thermal instabilities, in collisional plasmas with fully or partially unmagnetized multi-species ions. Collisional lasma instabilities in low-ionized, highly dissipative, weakly magnetized plasmas play an important role in the lower Earth's ionosphere and may be of importance in other planet ionospheres, star atmospheres, cometary tails, molecular clouds, accretion disks, etc. In the solar chromosphere, macroscopic effects of collisional plasma instabilit…
Using particle-in-cell simulations and kinetic theory, we explore the current-driven turbulence and associated electron heating in the dissipation region during 3D magnetic reconnection with a guide field. At late time the turbulence is dominated by the Buneman and lower hybrid instabilities. Both produce electron holes that co-exist but have very different propagation speeds. The associated scattering of electrons by the holes enhances electron heating in the dissipation region.
This paper summarizes the studies of plasma kinetic instabilities in the electron cyclotron frequency range carried out over the last decade at the Institute of Applied Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences. We investigate the nonequilibrium plasma created and sustained by high-power microwave radiation of a gyrotron under the electron cyclotron resonance condition. Resonant plasma heating results in the formation of at least two electron components, one of which, more dense and cold, determines the dispersion properties of the high-frequency waves, and the second, a small group of energetic …
In low-collisionality plasmas, velocity-space instabilities are a key mechanism providing an effective collisionality for the plasma. We use particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to study the interplay between electron and ion-scale velocity-space instabilities and their effect on electron pressure anisotropy, viscous heating, and thermal conduction. The adiabatic invariance of the magnetic moment in low-collisionality plasmas leads to pressure anisotropy, $p_{\perp,j} > p_{||,j}$, if the magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is amplified ($p_{\perp,j}$ and $p_{||,j}$ denote the pressure of species $j$ [elect…
Relativistic radiation mediated shocks (RRMS) likely form in prodigious cosmic explosions. The structure and emission of such shocks is regulated by copious production of electron-positron pairs inside the shock transition layer. It has been pointed out recently that substantial abundance of positrons inside the shock leads to a velocity separation of the different plasma constituents, which is expected to induce a rapid growth of plasma instabilities. In this paper, we study the hierarchy of plasma microinstabilities growing in an electron-ion plasma loaded with pairs and subject to a radiati…
In the innermost regions of low-luminosity accretion flows, including Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy, the frequency of Coulomb collisions is so low that the plasma is two-temperature, with the ions substantially hotter than the electrons. This paradigm assumes that Coulomb collisions are the only channel for transferring the ion energy to the electrons. In this work, the second of a series, we assess the efficiency of electron heating by ion velocity-space instabilities in collisionless accretion flows. The instabilities are seeded by the pressure anisotropy induced by magnetic field ampli…
Fermi acceleration can develop efficiently at relativistic collisionless shock waves provided the upstream (unshocked) plasma is weakly magnetized. At low magnetization, the large size of the shock precursor indeed provides enough time for electromagnetic micro-instabilities to grow and such micro-instabilities generate small scale turbulence that in turn provides the scattering required. The present paper extends our previous analysis on the development of these micro-instabilities to account for the finite angular dispersion of the beam of reflected and accelerated particles and to account f…

The evolution of the Buneman and two-stream instabilities driven by a cold dilute mildly relativistic electron beam is studied as a function of the ion\'\s charge-to-mass ratio. The growth rates of both instabilities are comparable for the selected parameters if the charge-to-mass ratio of protons is used and the Buneman instability outgrows the two-stream instability for a larger ratio. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that both instabilities grow independently during their linear growth phase. The much lower saturation amplitude of the Buneman instability implies that it saturates fir…
Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations are performed with the Particle-in-Cell code ORB5 for an ITER Pre-Fusion-Power-Operation (PFPO) plasma scenario, with half-field (2.65 T) and half-current (7.5 MA). We report on a 'multi-scale' analysis of the discharge, considering eigenmodes and instabilies across three scale-lengths. Although the scenario will nominally have neutral beam heating with particles injected with 1 MeV, Alfvén eigenmodes are investigated in the absence of such source, and Reversed Shear (RSAE), Toroidal (TAE) and Elliptical (EAE) Alfvén eigenmodes are found with weak…
High Mach number collisionless shocks are found in planetary systems and supernova remnants (SNRs). Electrons are heated at these shocks to the temperature well above the Rankine-Hugoniot prediction. However processes responsible for electron heating are still not well understood. We use a set of large-scale Particle-In-Cell simulations of non-relativistic shocks in high Mach number regime to clarify the electron heating processes. The physics of these shocks is defined by ion reflection at the shock ramp. Further interaction of the reflected ions and the upstream plasma excites electrostatic …
Above lunar crustal magnetic anomalies, large fractions of solar wind electrons and ions can be scattered and stream back towards the solar wind flow, leading to a number of interesting effects such as electrostatic instabilities and waves. These electrostatic structures can also interact with the background plasma, resulting in electron heating and scattering. We study the electrostatic waves and electron heating observed over the lunar magnetic anomalies by analyzing data from the Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of Moon's Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) spacecr…
Magnetic flux tubes such as those in the solar corona are subject to a number of instabilities. Important among them is the kink instability which plays a central part in the nanoflare theory of coronal heating, and for this reason in numerical simulations it is usually induced by tightly-controlled perturbations and studied in isolation. In contrast, we find that when disturbances are introduced in our magnetohydrodynamic flux tube simulations by dynamic twisting of the flow at the boundaries fluting modes of instability are readily excited. We also find that the flute instability, which has …
Using high-resolution data from Solar Orbiter, we investigate the plasma conditions necessary for the proton temperature anisotropy driven mirror-mode and oblique firehose instabilities to occur in the solar wind. We find that the unstable plasma exhibits dependencies on the angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the bulk solar wind velocity which cannot be explained by the double-adiabatic expansion of the solar wind alone. The angle dependencies suggest that perpendicular heating in Alfvénic wind may be responsible. We quantify the occurrence rate of the two instabilities as a…
Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a non-oscillating component of the electrostatic …

It is well known that two-dimensional macroscale shear flows are susceptible to instabilities leading to macroscale vortical structures. The linear and nonlinear fate of such a macroscale flow in a strongly coupled medium is a fundamental problem. A popular example of a strongly coupled medium is a dusty plasma, often modelled as a Yukawa liquid. Recently, laboratory experiments and MD studies of shear flows in strongly coupled Yukawa liquids, indicated occurrence of strong molecular shear heating, which is found to reduce the coupling strength exponentially leading to destruction of macroscal…
Electron bulk heating during magnetic reconnection with symmetric inflow conditions is examined using kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The degree of electron heating is well correlated with the inflowing Alfvén speed $c_{Ar}$ based on the reconnecting magnetic field through the relation $ΔT_e = 0.033 \,m_i\,c_{Ar}^2$, where $ΔT_{e}$ is the increase in electron temperature. For the range of simulations performed, the heating shows almost no correlation with inflow total temperature $T_{tot} = T_i + T_e$ or plasma $β$. An out-of-plane (guide) magnetic field of similar magnitude to the…
We use particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of a collisionless, electron-ion plasma with a decreasing background magnetic field, $B$, to study the effect of velocity-space instabilities on the viscous heating and thermal conduction of the plasma. If $B$ decreases, the adiabatic invariance of the magnetic moment gives rise to pressure anisotropies with $p_{||,j} > p_{\perp,j}$ ($p_{||,j}$ and $p_{\perp,j}$ represent the pressure of species $j$ ($=i$ or $e$) parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field). Linear theory indicates that, for sufficiently large anisotropies, different velocity-spac…

Using Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations at the Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock we demonstrate that electrons are heated by two different mechanisms: a quasi-adiabatic heating process during magnetic field compression, characterized by the isotropic temperature relation $T/B=(T_0/B_0)(B_0/B)^α$ with $α=2/3$ when the electron heating function $|χ_e|<1$, and a stochastic heating process when $|χ_e|>1$. Both processes are controlled by the value of the stochastic heating function $χ_j = m_j q_j^{-1} B^{-2}\mathrm{div}(\mathbf{E}_\perp)$ for particles with mass $m_j$ and charge $q_j$ in…
The relationship between a decaying plasma turbulence and proton fire hose instabilities in a slowly expanding plasma is investigated using three-dimensional (3-D) hybrid expanding box simulations. We impose an initial ambient magnetic field along the radial direction, and we start with an isotropic spectrum of large-scale, linearly-polarized, random-phase Alfvenic fluctuations with zero cross-helicity. A turbulent cascade rapidly develops and leads to a weak proton heating that is not sufficient to overcome the expansion-driven perpendicular cooling. The plasma system eventually drives the pa…
