Threshold of parametric decay instability accompanying electron Bernstein wave heating in spherical tokamaks

The parametric instability of upper hybrid wave decay into back scattered upper hybrid wave and lower hybrid wave is considered for conditions of inhomogeneous plasma of spherical tokamaks. The possibility of absolute instability is demonstrated and the corresponding threshold is determined. It is shown that the threshold power increases with pump frequency and electron temperature. Threshold power is estimated for typical parameters of experiment in MAST tokamak. It is shown that in this case parametrical reflection arises, if probing power exceeds 90W/cm^2, which gives 30 kW for a beam of 10 cm radius.

Low Threshold Parametric Decay Back Scattering Instability in Tokamak ECRH Experiments

The experimental conditions leading to substantial reduction of backscattering decay instability threshold in ECRH experiments in toroidal devices are analyzed. It is shown that drastic decrease of threshold is provided by non monotonic behavior of plasma density in the vicinity of magnetic island and poloidal magnetic field inhomogeneity making possible localization of ion Bernstein decay waves. The corresponding ion Bernstein wave gain and the parametric decay instability pump power threshold is calculated.

Electron Bernstein waves in spherical tokamak plasmas with "magnetic wells"

In addition to traditional regimes with monotonously increasing magnetic field, regimes with "magnetic wells" also occur in spherical tokamaks (STs). The magnetic field profile inversion modifies significantly the whole picture of the wave propagation and damping. Since the magnetic wells may become quite common with further improvement of ST performance, analysis of such configurations is of interest for assessment of EBW plasma heating an CD perspectives. In this paper the basic features of the EBWs propagation and damping for the second cyclotron harmonic in a slab model are considered.

Verification of nonlinear particle simulation of radio frequency waves in tokamak

Nonlinear simulation model for radio frequency (RF) waves in fusion plasmas has been developed and verified using fully kinetic ion and drift kinetic electron. Ion cyclotron motion in the toroidal geometry is implemented using Boris push in the Boozer coordinates. Excitation of Large-ktheta Ion-Berstein Waves in Tokamaks

The mode-converted ion-Bernstein wave excited in tokamaks is shown to exhibit certain very interesting behavior, including the attainment of very small poloidal phase velocities, the reversal of poloidal direction, and up-down asymmetries in propagation and damping. Hydrogen majority plasmas will be used in the initial non-activated phase of ITER operation.
