By the nonstandard analysis theory of turbulence, the governing equations of compressible turbulence are given. The equations can hold at non-uniform points, in fact, are new kind of equations. There are three choices. In the choice one, the second-order infinitesimal quantities are neglected, the closed equations about the point(monad)-average quantities are obtained. In other two choices, the closed equations, in which the third-order infinitesimal quantities are omitted, are given and about the instantaneous, point-averaged and fluctuant quantities.
Compressible hydrodynamic turbulence is studied under the assumption of a polytropic closure. Following Kolmogorov, we derive an exact relation for some two-point correlation functions in the asymptotic limit of a high Reynolds number.
An explicit analitical description of the compressible turbulence, based on the exact solution of the one-dimensional Euler equations in the unbounded case is obtained. The Onsager dissipative anomaly is resolved. The exact universal -8/3 energy spectrum corresponding to the finite time collapse of Euler's solution is stated. That spectrum is relevant to strong acoustic turbulence and observation in the space turbulence.
A new exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is derived for the compressible flows which are far from equilibrium in the limit of extremely low shear viscosity and relatively large volume viscosity. The closed description of the evolution of statistical moments of velocity is obtained, thereby bypassing the closure problem in the theory of turbulence.
We present results from numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence, performed using a recently proposed lattice Boltzmann method able to describe consistently a thermal compressible flow subject to an external forcing. The method allowed us to study the system both in the nearly-Boussinesq and strongly compressible regimes. Moreover, we show that when the stratification is important, the presence of the adiabatic gradient causes the arrest of the mixing process.
We derive from first principles analytic relations for the second and third order moments of the velocity gradient mij = dui/dxj in compressible turbulence, which generalize known relations in incompressible flows. These relations, although derived for homogeneous flows, hold approximately for a mixing layer. We also discuss how to apply these relations to determine all the second and third moments of the velocity gradient experimentally.
Temporal decorrelations in compressible isotropic turbulence are studied using the space-time correlation theory and direct numerical simulation. A swept-wave model is developed for dilatational components while the classic random sweeping model is proposed for solenoidal components. The swept-wave model shows that the temporal decorrelations in dilatational fluctuations are dominated by two physical processes: random sweeping and wave propagation. Multi-fractal scaling in the transition to the dissipative regime for fully-developed compressible turbulence is considered. The multi-fractal power law scaling behavior breaks down for very small length scales thanks to viscous effects. However, the effect of compressibility is found to extend the single-scaling multi-fractal regime further into the dissipative range. In the ultimate compressibility limit, thanks to the shock waves which are the appropriate dissipative structures, the single-scaling regime is found to extend indeed all the way into the full viscous regime. We report on probability-density-functions (PDF) of the mass density in numerical simulations of highly compressible hydrodynamic flows and the corresponding structure formation of Lagrangian particles advected by the flows. Numerical simulations were performed with $512^3$ collocation points and 2 million tracer particles integrated over several dynamical times. We propose a connection between the PDF of the Lagrangian tracer particles and the predicted log-normal distribution of the density fluctuations in isothermal systems.
The spatial scaling laws of velocity kinetic energy spectrum for compressible turbulence flow and its density-weighted counterpart have been formulated in terms of wavenumber, dissipation rate and Mach number by using dimensional analysis. We have applied the Barenblatt's incomplete similarity theory to both kinetic and density-weighted energy spectrum and showed that, within the initial subrange, both energy spectrums approach the -5/3 power law of the wavenumber, when the Mach number $M$ tends to be naught, unity and infinity, respectively.
Theory and computations have established that thermodynamic gradients created by hot spots in reactive gas mixtures can lead to spontaneous detonation initiation. However, the current laminar theory of the temperature-gradient mechanism for detonation initiation is restricted to idealized physical configurations. We assess the viability of a recently proposed novel approach to LES for compressible variable density flows by means of a priori tests. The a priori tests have been carried out filtering a two-dimensional DNS database of the classic lock-exchange benchmark. The tests confirm that additional terms should be accounted for in subgrid scale modeling of variable density flows, with respect to the terms usually considered in the traditional approach. Several alternatives for the modeling of these terms are assessed and discussed.
In our recent works we proposed a theory of turbulence in inertial gas flow via the mean field effect of an intermolecular potential. We found that, in inertial flow, turbulence indeed spontaneously develops from a laminar initial condition, just as observed in nature and experiments. A shock-preserving finite volume solver with the generalized Lax-Friedrichs splitting flux for Morphing Continuum Theory (MCT) is presented and verified. The numerical MCT solver is showcased in a supersonic turbulent flow with Mach 2.93 over an $8^{\circ}$ compression ramp. The simulation results validated MCT with experiments as an alternative for modeling compressible turbulence. The accelerations of tracer and light particles in compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence (CHIT) is investigated by using data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) up to turbulent Mach number $M_t =1$. This work presents a rigorous framework based on coarse-graining to analyze highly compressible turbulence. We show how the requirement that viscous effects on the dynamics of large-scale momentum and kinetic energy be negligible ---an inviscid criterion--- naturally supports a density weighted coarse-graining of the velocity field. Derivation of governing equations for multiphase flow on the base of thermodynamically compatible systems theory is presented. The mixture is considered as a continuum in which the multiphase character of the flow is taken into account. The resulting governing equations of the formulated model belong to the class of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. We present simulations of coherent structures in compressible flows near the transition to turbulence using the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method. The structures we find are remarkably consistent with experimental observations and DNS simulations of incompressible flows, despite a difference in Mach number of several orders of magnitude. We report a detailed study of Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics from high resolution Direct Numerical Simulations of isotropic weakly compressible turbulence. Reynolds number at the Taylor microscale is estimated to be around 600. We study conformal invariance of vorticity clusters in weakly compressible two-dimensional turbulence at low Mach numbers. On the basis of very high resolution direct numerical simulation we demonstrate the scaling invariance of the inverse cascade with scaling close to Kolmogorov prediction. In this range of scales, the statistics of zero-vorticity isolines are found to be compatible with those of critical percolation, thus generalizing the results obtained in incompressible Navier-Stokes turbulence.

We present a model for compressible sub-Alfvenic isothermal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in low-beta plasmas and numerically test it. We separate MHD fluctuations into 3 distinct families - Alfven, slow, and fast modes. We find that, production of slow and fast modes by Alfvenic turbulence is suppressed. As a result, Alfven modes in compressible regime exhibit scalings and anisotropy similar to those in incompressible regime. Slow modes passively mimic Alfven modes. However, fast modes show isotropy and a scaling similar to acoustic turbulence.

We study the growth of small fluctuations of magnetic field in supersonic turbulence, the small-scale dynamo. The growth is due to the fastest turbulent eddies above the resistive scale. We observe that for supersonic turbulence these eddies are effectively incompressible which creates a robust structure of the growth. The eddies are localised below the sonic scale $l_s$ defined as the scale where the typical velocity of the turbulent eddies equals the speed of sound. We study the existence and property of Fast magnetosonic modes in 3D compressible MHD turbulence by carrying out a number of simulations with compressible and incompressible driving conditions. We use two approaches to determine the presence of Fast modes: mode decomposition based on spatial variations only and spatio-temporal 4D-FFT analysis of all fluctuations.
