A method is proposed to determine the $M1$ nuclear transition amplitude and hence the lifetime of the "nuclear clock transition" between the low-lying ($\sim 8$ eV) first isomeric state and the ground state of $^{229}$Th from a measurement of the ground-state $g$ factor of few-electron $^{229}$Th ions. As a tool, the effect of nuclear hyperfine mixing (NHM) in highly charged $^{229}$Th-ions such as $^{229}$Th$^{89+}$ or $^{229}$Th$^{87+}$ is utilized. The ground-state-only $g$-factor measurement would also provide first experimental evidence of NHM in atomic ions. Combining the measurements fo…

The practical ability of the method is demonstrated by deriving formulas for the QED and interelectro…
In sudden perturbation approximation, the probability of the shake-up process accompanying inner-shell ionization is calculated for the isoelectronic sequences of Li-, Na- and K-like ions in the ground and excited $n$p and $n$d states. Numerical solutions of Hartree-Fock equations and hydrogen-like radial orbitals are used. Very large differences between the results of both approximations for all ions and strong dependences on ion charge are obtained at the beginning of the isoelectronic sequences.
We report on the observation of a strong perturbation of the electron gas induced by 20 MeV/u U$^{91+}$ ions and 13 MeV/u Pb$^{81+}$ ions channeled in silicon crystals. This collective response (wake effect) in-duces a shift of the continuum energy level by more than 100 eV, which is observed by means of Radiative Electron Capture into the K and L-shells of the projectiles. We also observe an increase of the REC probability by 20-50% relative to the probability in a non-perturbed electron gas. The energy shift is in agreement with calculations using the linear response theory, whereas the loca…

Distribution of the entangled state of trapped atomic ions to long distance using quantum repeater protocol is considered. Indeed, the long distance is divided into short parts, and then using entanglement generation and entanglement swapping techniques in optomechanical cavities, the entanglement is distributed. To do the task, we perform interaction between trapped atomic ions in optomechanical cavities, operate proper measurements on trapped ions and also make Bell state measurement as a well-known way to swap the entanglement. Accordingly, the entanglement is distributed between target ion…
One- and two-photon transitions in the hydrogen atom are analytically evaluated in the absence and in the presence of an external electric field. Different nonrelativistic "forms" for the decay probabilities in combination with different gauge choices are considered. The three-photon E1E1E1 2p-1s transition probability is…
Electronic bridge excitation of the 76 eV nuclear isomeric state in $^{235}$U is shown to be strongly enhanced in the U$^{7+}$ ion, potentially enabling laser excitation of this nucleus. This is because the electronic spectrum has a very high level density near the nuclear transition energy that ensures the resonance condition is fulfilled. We present a quantum statistical theory based on many-body quantum chaos to demonstrate that typical values for the electronic factor increase the probability of electronic bridge in $^{235}$U$^{7+}$ by many orders of magnitude. Using trapped ion quantum bits in a scalable microfabricated surface trap, we perform the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm. Our architecture relies upon ion transport and can readily be expanded to larger systems. The algorithm is demonstrated using two- and three-ion chains. For three ions, an improvement is achieved compared to a classical system using the same number of oracle queries. For two ions and one query, we correctly determine an unknown bit string with probability 97.6(8)%. For three ions, we succeed with probability 80.9(3)%.
The quantum electrodynamical theory of the two-photon transitions in hydrogenlike ions is presented. The emission probability for 2s1/2 -> 2E1+1s1/2 transitions is calculated and compared to the results of the previous calculations. The emission probabilities 2p12 -> E1E2+1s1/2 and 2p1/2 -> E1M1+1s1/2 are also calculated for the nuclear charge Z values 1-100. This is the first calculation of the two latter probabilities. The results are given in two different gauges.
Isotope effects in reactions between Mg+ in the 3p 2P3/2 excited state and molecular hydrogen at thermal energies are studied through single reaction events. From only ~250 reactions with HD, the branching ratio between formation of MgD+ and MgH+ is found to be larger than 5. From additional 65 reactions with H2 and D2 we find that the overall decay probability of the intermediate MgH2+, MgHD+ or MgD2+ complexes is the same. Our study shows that few single ion reactions can provide quantitative information on ion-neutral reactions. Hence, the method is well-suited for reaction studies involvin…

Exact formulas have been obtained in the limits of zero impact parameter and large, perturbative, impact parameter. The perturbative impact parameter result can be exploited to obtain a semi-empirical cross section formula of the form, sigma = A ln(gamma) + B, for single electron ionization. A and B can be evaluated for any combination of target and projectile, and the resulti…
Hyperfine induced $2s2p~^3P_0 \rightarrow 2s^2~^1S_0$ transition rates in an external magnetic field for Be-like $^{47}$Ti were calculated based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. It was found that the transition probability is dependent on the magnetic quantum number $M_F$ of the excited state, even in the weak field. The present investigation clarified that the difference of the hyperfine induced transition rate of Be-like Ti ions between experiment [Schippers {\sl et al.}, Phys Rev Lett {\bf 98}, (2007) 033001(4)] and theory does not result from the influence of external magnetic …
Ionization of hydrogen-like ions by intense, circularly polarized laser pulses is analyzed under the scope of the relativistic strong-field approximation. We show that, for specific parameters of the laser field, the energy spectra of photoelectrons present a broad region without interference (supercontinuum) which can be controlled by modifying the laser field intensity. The physical interpretation of the process is developed according to the Keldysh theory, emphasizing the importance of the complex-time saddle point contributions to the total probability of photoionization. The corresponding…
