It is argued that, in a hot plasma interacting with thermal radiation, there exist the radiation-induced solitary waves different from the types of nonlinear waves in plasmas known so far. There are extensive observational evidence for the propagation of these specific density waves in the hot plasmas of various astrophysical objects. Radiation produces also non-adiabatic density perturbations analogues to the second sound in the liquid helium.
The passage of an ion-acoustic solitary wave through the boundary between an electron-ion plasma and a negative ion plasma is considered. After the ion-acoustic solitary wave enters the region of another plasma, a disturbance arises, from which an ion-acoustic solitary wave and a chain of oscillations form over time. The amplitude of the ion-acoustic solitary wave after passage through the boundary changes in such a way that its value in the electron-ion plasma is greater than its value in the negative ion plasmas. An exception is the case of a compressive ion-acoustic solitary wave propagatin…
Head-on collisions of ion-acoustic solitary waves in a collisionless plasma consisting of cold ions and Boltzmann electrons are studied using the particle-in-cell simulation. It is shown that the collision of solitary waves can occur under different scenarios. Solitary waves preserve or do not preserve their amplitudes and shapes after a collision, depending on their initial amplitudes. The range of initial amplitudes, at which a solitary wave preserves its identity after collisions, is established. The use of a diagram of initial amplitudes of colliding solitary waves to consider possible col…
The head-on collision of ion-acoustic solitary waves in a collisionless plasma with cold ions and Boltzmann electrons is studied. It is shown that solitary waves of sufficiently large amplitudes do not retain their identity after a collision. Their amplitudes decrease and their forms change. Dependences of amplitudes of the potential and densities of ions and electrons after a head-on collision of identical solitary waves on their initial amplitude are presented.
Effects of ion mobility and positron fraction on solitary waves of envelop of laser field and potential of electrostatic field in weak relativistic electron-positron-ion plasma are investigated. The parameter region for the existence of solitary waves is obtained analytically, and the reasonable choice of parameters is clarified. Both cases of mobile and immobile ions are considered. It is found that the amplitudes of solitary waves in the former case are larger compared to the latter case. For small plasma density, the localized solitary wave solutions in terms of approximate perturbation ana…
The space electron-ion-positive dust plasma system containing isothermal inertialess electron species, cold inertial ion species, and stationary positive (positivively charged) dust species is considered. The basic features of one dimensional (1D) planar and nonplanar subsonic solitary waves are investigated by the pseudo-potential and reductive perturbation methods, respectively. It is observed that the presence of the positive dust species reduces the phase speed of the ion-acoustic waves, and consequently supports the subsonic solitary waves with the positive wave potential in such a space …
The excitation of nonlinear electrostatic waves, such as shock and solitons, by ultraintense laser interaction with overdense plasmas and related ion acceleration are investigated by numerical simulations. Stability of solitons and formation of shock waves is strongly dependent on the velocity distribution of ions. Monoenergetic components in ion spectra are produced by "pulsed" reflection from solitary waves. Possible relevance to recent experiments on "shock acceleration" is discussed.

By employing Sagdeev's pseudo-potential method, we obtain double layers and soliton structure. We have studied the various parametric dependence of solitary structures and double layers. The results thus obtained might be helpful in the studies of many high energy astrophysical phenomena.

In this article we are going to consider dust acoustic wave in dusty plasma whose constituents are inertial negative charged dust particles, Boltzmann distributed electrons and non-thermal distributed ions with variable dust charge. Using reductive perturbation method, we have obtained Korteweg-de Veries (kdv) and modified kdv(mkdv) equations. A Sagdeev potential for the system and stability conditions for solitonic solution are also derived.
The excitation and propagation of finite amplitude low frequency solitary waves are investigated in an Argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discharge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of the modulating voltage, but the product of the solitary wave amplitude and the square of the width remains nearly constant. The experimental findings are compared with analytic soliton solutions of a model…
We report the first experimental observations of the reflection of a dust acoustic solitary wave from a potential barrier in a dusty plasma medium. The experiments have been carried out in an inverted $Π$-shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device in a DC glow discharge plasma environment. The dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by modulating the plasma with a short negative Gaussian pulse that is superimposed over the discharge voltage. The solitary wave structure is seen to move towards a potential barrier, created by the sheath around a biased wire, and turn back after reflecting off…
The novel thermally degenerate plasma model (based on a system containing relativistically and thermally degenerate inertial-less electron species, non-relativistically and thermally degenerate inertial light nucleus species, and stationary heavy nucleus species) is considered. The basic features of planar and nonplanar solitary structures associated with the thermally degenerate pressure driven nucleus-acoustic waves propagating in such a thermally degenerate plasma system has been investigated. The reductive perturbation method, which is valid for small amplitude solitary waves, is used. It …

Sardar et al. [Phys. Plasmas 23, 073703 (2016)] have studied the stability of small amplitude dust ion acoustic solitary waves in a collisionless unmagnetized electron - positron - ion - dust plasma. They have derived a Kadomtsev Petviashvili (KP) equation to investigate the lowest - order stability of the solitary wave solution of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation for long-wavelength plane-wave transverse perturbation when the weak dependence of the spatial coordinates perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave is taken into account. In the present paper, we have extended th…
The nonlinear propagation of small amplitude ion acoustic solitary wave in relativistic degenerate magneto plasma in presence of ion beam is investigated in detail. The nonlinear equations describing the evolution of solitary wave in presence of relativistic non-degenerate magnetized positive ions and ion beams including magnetized degenerate relativistic electrons are derived in terms of Zakharov-Kuznetsov (Z-K) equation for such plasma systems. The ion beams which are ubiquitous ingredient in such plasma systems, are found to have a decisive role in the propagation of solitary wave in such h…
Linearly polarized solitary waves, arising from the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a plasma, are investigated. New localized structures, in the form of exact \Changes{numerical} nonlinear solutions of the one-dimensional Maxwell-fluid model for a cold plasma with fixed ions are presented. Unlike stationary circularly polarized solitary waves, the linear polarization gives rise to a breather-like behavior and a periodic exchange of electromagnetic energy and electron kinetic energy at twice the frequency of the wave. A numerical method based on a finite-differences scheme allows to …
We study the ion acoustic solitary waves in the four-component complex plasma consisting of cold inertial ions, positrons, cold and hot (two-temperature) electrons, where the electrons and positrons are the Cairns-Tsallis distribution and have different nonthermal and nonextensive parameters. Base on the plasma hydrodynamic equations and Sagdeev pseudo-potential theory, we derive the conditions of the solitary waves to exist in the plasma, such as the Sagdeev pseudo-potential, the normalized electrostatic potential, the lower and upper limits of Mach number, and the compressive/rarefactive sol…
We investigate the propagation characteristics of two counter propagating dust acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) undergoing a head-on collision, in the presence of strong coupling between micron sized charged dust particles in a complex plasma. A coupled set of nonlinear dynamical equations describing the evolution of the two DASWs using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo perturbation technique is derived. The nature and extent of post collision phase-shifts of these solitary waves are studied over a wide range of dusty plasma parameters in a strongly and a weakly coupled medium. We find a sign…
The small amplitude ion-acoustic solitary waves in the magneto-rotating plasma consisting of cold fluid ions, hot positrons, and the two-temperature electrons (cold and hot electrons) are investigated when the electrons obey a modified Cairns-Tsallis distribution. By using the reductive perturbation method, we derive the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and obtain the small amplitude ion-acoustic solitary wave solutions. The dependences of solitary wave solutions on the nonextensive q-parameter, the nonthermal alpha-parameter and the plasma physical quanti…
Solitary electrons holes (SEHs) are localized electrostatic positive potential structures in collisionless plasmas. These are vortex-like structures in the electron phase space. Its existence is cause of distortion of the electron distribution in the resonant region. These are explained theoretically first time by Schamel et.al [Phys. Scr. 20, 336 (1979) and Phys. Plasmas 19, 020501 (2012)]. Propagating solitary electron holes can also be formed in a laboratory plasma when a fast rising high positive voltage pulse is applied to a metallic electrode [Kar et. al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 102113 (2010)…
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves.…
The propagation of nonlinear electron- acoustic waves (EAWs) in an unmagnetized collision- less plasma system consisting of a cold electron fluid, superthermal hot electrons and stationary ions is investigated. A reductive perturbation method is employed to obtain a modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equa- tion for the first-order potential. The small amplitude electron-acoustic solitary wave, e.g., soliton and dou- ble layer (DL) solutions are presented, and the effects of superthermal electrons on the nature of the solitons are also discussed. But the results shows that the weak stationary EA…
We investigate the small but finite amplitude solitary Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) in low $β$ plasmas with superthermal electrons modeled by a kappa-type distribution. A nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation describing the evolution of KAWs is derived by using the standard reductive perturbation method. Examining the dependence of the nonlinear and dispersion coefficients of the KdV equation on the superthermal parameter $κ$, plasma $β$ and obliqueness of propagation, we show that these parameters may change substantially the shape and size of solitary KAW pulses. Only sub-Alfvénic, compr…
Recently, Yan-Xia Xu, et al. in the article Ref. [Phys. Plasmas \textbf{18}, 052301 (2011)] have studied the effects of various plasma parameters on interaction of two ion-acoustic solitary waves in an unmagnetized three-dimensional electron-positron-ion quantum plasma. They have used the extended reductive perturbation technique, the so-called, extended Poincare'-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) technique, to deduce from the model governing the quantum hydrodynamics (QHD) differential equations leading to the soliton dynamical properties, namely, Korteweg-de Vries evolution equations (one for each wave) a…
We consider the nonlinear propagation of finite amplitude electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) in multi-component plasmas composed of two distinct groups of electrons (cold and hot components), and non-isothermal ions. We use the continuity and momentum equations for cold inertial electrons, Boltzmann law for inertialess hot electrons, non-isothermal density distribution for hot ions, and Poisson's equation to derive an energy integral with a modified Sagdeev potential (MSP) for nonlinear EAWs. The MSP is analyzed to demonstrate the existence of arbitrary amplitude EA solitary pulses (EASPs) and EA …
This article discusses the existence of solitary electromagnetic waves trapped in a self-generated Langmuir wave and embedded in an infinitely long circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating through a plasma. From the mathematical point of view they are exact solutions of the 1-dimensional relativistic cold fluid plasma model with nonvanishing boundary conditions. Under the assumption of traveling wave solutions with velocity $V$ and vector potential frequency $ω$, the fluid model is reduced to a Hamiltonian system. The solitary waves are homoclinic (grey solitons) or heteroclinic (…
A fully ionized multi-nucleus plasma system (containing thermally degenerate electron species, non-degenerate warm light nucleus species, and low dense stationary heavy nucleus species) is considered. The basic features of thermal and degenerate pressure driven small and arbitrary amplitude subsonic and supersonic nucleus-acoustic solitary waves in such a plasma system are studied by the pseudo-potential approach. The effects of stationary heavy nucleus, non-relativistically and ultra-relativistically electron degeneracies, and light nucleus temperature on small and arbitrary amplitude subsoni…
Suprathermal electrons and inertial drifting electrons, so called electron beam, are crucial to the nonlinear dynamics of electrostatic solitary waves observed in several astrophysical plasmas. In this paper, the propagation of electron-acoustic solitary waves is investigated in a collisionless, unmagnetized plasma consisting of cool inertial background electrons, hot suprathermal electrons (modeled by a $κ$-type distribution), and stationary ions. The plasma is penetrated by a cool electron beam component. A linear dispersion relation is derived to describe small-amplitude wave structures tha…
We have used the Sagdeev pseudo-potential technique to investigate the arbitrary amplitude ion acoustic solitons, double layers and supersolitons in a collisionless magnetized plasma consisting of adiabatic warm ions, isothermal cold electrons and nonthermal hot electrons immersed in an external uniform static magnetic field. We have used the phase portraits of the dynamical system describing the nonlinear behaviour of ion acoustic waves to confirm the existence of different solitary structures. We have also investigated the transition of different solitary structures: soliton (before the form…
A set of fluid equations, taking into account the spin properties of the electrons and positrons in a magnetoplasma, are derived. The magnetohydrodynamic limit of the pair plasma is investigated. It is shown that the microscopic spin properties of the electrons and positrons can lead to interesting macroscopic and collective effects in strongly magnetized plasmas. In particular, it is found that new Alfvenic solitary structures, governed by a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, are allowed in such plasmas. These solitary structures vanish if the quantum spin effects are neglected. Our results…
We investigate the dynamics of localized solutions of the relativistic cold fluid plasma model in the small but finite amplitude limit, for slightly overcritical plasma density. Adopting a multiple scale analysis, we derive a perturbed nonlinear Schröndinger equation that describes the evolution of the envelope of circularly polarized electromagnetic field. Retaining terms up to fifth order in the small perturbation parameter, we derive a self-consistent framework for the description of the plasma response in the presence of localized electromagnetic field. The formalism is applied to standing…
Plasma state of matter can be studied in various types of situations. These studies are of great interest in Astrophysical objects like galaxies, accretion disk, neutron stars, etc, and laboratory plasma as well. Different objects demand different approaches to investigate the dynamics of the plasma. The relativistic effects in the motion of electrons in Quantum Plasma highly affect the characteristics of the solitary structure of the wave with two-temperature electrons. In this paper, considering the quantum hydrodynamic (QHD) model a dispersion relation is derived, and using standard perturb…
We consider the Adlam-Allen (AA) system of partial differential equations which, arguably, is the first model that was introduced to describe solitary waves in the context of propagation of hydrodynamic disturbances in collisionless plasmas. Here, we identify the solitary waves of the model by implementing a dynamical systems approach. The latter suggests that the model also possesses periodic wave solutions --which reduce to the solitary wave in the limiting case of infinite period-- as well as rational solutions which are obtained herein. In addition, employing a long-wave approximation via …
Dust ion acoustic solitary structures have been investigated in an unmagnetized nonthermal plasma consisting of negatively charged dust grains, adiabatic positive ions and nonthermal electrons. For isothermal electrons, the present plasma system does not support any double layer solution, whereas for nonthermal electrons, negative potential double layer starts to occur whenever the nonthermal parameter exceeds a critical value. However this double layer solution is unable to restrict the occurrence of all negative potential solitary waves of the present system. As a result, two different types…
The propagation characteristics of small-amplitude dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves (SWs) and shocks are studied in an unmagnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped positive and negative ions. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique with two different scaling of stretched coordinates, the evolution equations for DA SWs and shocks are derived in the forms of complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and complex Burgers' equations. The effects of dust charge variation, the dust thermal pressure, and the ratios of positive to negative ion number densities as well as the free to trapped ion …
The heavy ion acoustic solitary waves (HIASWs) in a magnetized, collisionless, three component space plasma system in the presence of dynamical heavy particles and bi-kappa distributed two distinct temperature of electrons has been carried out. The Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV), the modified K-dV (mK-dV), and the further mK-dV (fmK-dV) equations are derived by employing the well known reductive perturbation method. The basic features of HIASWs (speed, amplitude, width etc.) are found to be significantly modified by the effects of number density of plasma species, superthermal electrons with two dis…
Propagation of large amplitude ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) in a fully relativistic plasma consisting of cold ions and ultrarelativistic hot electrons and positrons is investigated using the Sagdeev's pseudopotential method in a relativistic hydrodynamics model. Effects of streaming speed of plasma fluid, thermal energy, positron density and positron temperature on large amplitude IASWs are studied by analysis of the pseudopotential structure. It is found that in regions that the streaming speed of plasma fluid is larger than that of solitary wave, by increasing the streaming speed of p…

The reductive perturbation technique is employed to derive the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mK-dV) and standard Gardner (SG) equations. The solitary wave (SW) solution of mK-dV and SG equations as well as Double Layers (DLs) solution of SG equation is studied for analysis o…
Employing the Sagdeev pseudo-potential technique the ion acoustic solitary structures have been investigated in an unmagnetized collisionless plasma consisting of adiabatic warm ions, nonthermal electrons and isothermal positrons. The qualitatively different compositional parameter spaces clearly indicate the existence domains of solitons and double layers with respect to any parameter of the present plasma system. The present system supports the negative potential double layer which always restricts the occurrence of negative potential solitons. The system also supports positive potential dou…
Based on the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, an exact arbitrary-amplitude general solution is presented for oblique propagation of solitary excitations in two- and three-component quasineutral magnetoplasmas, adopting the standard pseudopotential approach. It is revealed that the necessary matching criterion of existence of such oblique nonlinear propagations in two and three-fluid magnetoplasmas share global features. These features are examined for the cases of electron-ion and electron-positron-ion magnetoplasmas with diverse equations of state. This study also reveals that for electron-i…
Bandyopadhyay and Das [Phys. Plasmas, 9, 465-473, 2002] have derived a nonlinear macroscopic evolution equation for ion acoustic wave in a magnetized plasma consisting of warm adiabatic ions and non-thermal electrons including the effect of Landau damping. In that paper they have also derived the corresponding nonlinear evolution equation when coefficient of the nonlinear term of the above mentioned macroscopic evolution equation vanishes, the nonlinear behaviour of the ion acoustic wave is described by a modified macroscopic evolution equation. But they have not considered the case when the c…

The propagation of a dissipative solitary wave across an interface is studied in a binary complex plasma. The experiments were performed under microgravity conditions in the PK-3 Plus Laboratory on board the International Space Station using microparticles with diameters of 1.55 micrometre and 2.55 micrometre immersed in a low-temperature plasma. The solitary wave was excited at the edge of a particle-free region and propagated from the sub-cloud of small particles into that of big particles. The interfacial effect was observed by measuring the deceleration of particles in the wave crest. The …
We study the influence of ion beam and charged dust impurity on the propagation of dust ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary wave (SW) in an unmagnetized plasma consisting of Boltzmann distributed electrons, positive ions, positive ion beam and negatively charged immobile dusts in a double plasma device. On interacting with an ion beam, the solitary wave is bifurcated into a compressive fast and a rarefactive slow beam mode, and appears along with the primary wave. However, there exists a critical velocity of the beam beyond which the amplitude of the fast solitary wave starts diminishing and rarefacti…
The nonlinear propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in an ion-beam driven plasma with Boltzmannian electrons, positive ions and stationary charged dust grains, is studied by using the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT). It is shown that there exist two critical values $(γ_{c1}$ and $γ_{c2})$ of ion-beam to ion phase speed ratio $(γ)$, beyond which the beam generated solitons are not possible. The effects of the parameters, namely $γ$, the ratio of the ion-beam to plasma ion density $(μ_{i})$, the dust to ion density ratio $(μ_{d})$ as well as th…
The propagation of arbitrary amplitude ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves (SWs) is studied in unmagnetized, collisionless, homogeneous electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasmas with finite temperature degeneracy of both electrons and positrons. Starting from a set of fluid equations for classical ions and Fermi-Dirac distribution for degenerate electrons and positrons, a linear dispersion relation for IA waves is derived. It is seen that the wave dispersion is significantly modified due to the presence of positron species and the effects of finite temperature degeneracy of electrons and positrons. I…

It is shown that the interaction of a plasma with thermal radiation leads to the stabilization of both periodic and solitary nonlinear plasma waves. The stabilized periodic nonlinear plasma waves were indeed observed in the experiment carried out by Looney and Brown. There are many branches of radiation-induced solitary waves in plasmas, corresponding in particular to the density waves in hot plasmas of accretion disks.

The derivations and basic features of shock and solitary waves with different plasma parameters like Mach number, finite temperature coefficient, unperturbed dust streaming velocity, kinematic viscosity of dust etc. of this DIAWs mode have been performed. Considering the dynamical equation from Korteweg de Vries(KdV) equation, a phase portrait…
A comprehensive analytical theory for nonlinear excitations related to horizontal (longitudinal, acoustic mode) as well as vertical (transverse, optical mode) motion of charged dust grains in a dust crystal is presented. Different types of localized excitations, similar to those well known in solid state physics, are reviewed and conditions for their occurrence and characteristics in dusty plasma crystals are discussed. By employing a continuum approximation (i.e. assuming a long variation scale, with respect to the inter-particle distance) a dust crystal is shown to support nonlinear kink-sha…
The propagation of fully nonlinear ion acoustic solitary waves (IASW) in a magneto-plasma with degenerate electrons was investigated by Abdelsalam et al. [[1] Physics Letters A 372 (2008) 4923]. Based on their work in the present work, a rigorous and general analytical study is presented. This confirms their implied assumption that (i) only hump and no cavity is possible and (ii) for humps, the algebraic equation for the maximum density N obtained by them determines it uniquely (naturally assumes N > 1). Here we confirm analytically their assertion that N decreases with lx (the direction cosin…
