Relativistic coupled-cluster(RCC) theory has been employed to calculate the life time of the $6 ^2P_{3/2}$ state of single ionized lead($^{207}Pb$) to an accurac y of 3% and compared with the corresponding value obtained using second order r elativistic many-body perturbation theory(RMBPT). This is one of the very few ap plications of this theory to excited state properties of heavy atomic systems. C ontributions from the different electron correlation effects are given explicitl y.
Relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) calculations have been performed to estimate the electromagnetic forbidden transition probabilities, oscillator strengths and lifetimes of many low-lying states of five times ionized molybdenum (Mo VI). Contributions from the Breit interaction up to the first order of perturbation have been examined. Our results are in good agreement with the available other reported theoretical and experimental results. A long lifetime about 4.9854 s of the first excited state, 4d $^2D_{5/2}$, has been predicted which can be a very useful criteria in the doping process of th…
We propose a method for obtaining effective lifetimes of scattering electronic states for avoiding the artificially confinement of the wave function due to the use of incomplete basis sets in time-dependent electronic-structure calculations of atoms and molecules. In this method, using a fitting procedure, the lifetimes are extracted from the spatial asymptotic decay of the approximate scattering wave functions obtained with a given basis set. The method is based on a rigorous analysis of the complex-energy solutions of the Schr{ö}dinger equation. It gives lifetimes adapted to any given basis …
The first metastable triplet state of HeH$^+$ was found to be present in ion beam experiments, with its lifetime estimated to be between hundreds of milliseconds and thousand of seconds. In this work, we use {\it ab initio} methods to evaluate the radiative lifetimes of the six vibrational levels of the $a\ ^3Σ^+$ of HeH$^+$. The transition $a\ ^3Σ^+ \rightarrow X \ ^1Σ^+$ is spin-forbidden, but acquires intensity through spin-orbit interaction with the singlet and triplet $Π$ states. Large scale CASSCF/MRCI calculations using an adapted basis set were performed to determine the potential ener…
Electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) transition amplitudes among the low-lying states of quadruply ionized vanadium V$^{4+}$, important in various field of experimental and astrophysics are presented very accurately. Most of these results are reported for the first time in the literature. Relativistic coupled-cluster theory with single, double and leading triple excitations has been employed for these calculations. Estimation of different correlation effects arising through the above formalism have been highlighted by studying core and valence electrons excitations to the excited …
We have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory to calculate the electric dipole matrix elements in the singly ionized barium (Ba$^+$) and radium (Ra$^+$). Matrix elements of Ba$^+$ are used to determine the light-shift ratios for two different wavelengths on which recent experiments are carried out. By combining the measured light-shift ratios and our calculations, we are able to estimate possible errors associate with the used matrix elements in Ba$^+$. Static polarizabilities of the low-lying states and lifetimes of the first excited P-states are also determined using these matrix …
We report a new technique to determine the van der Waals coeffcients of lithium (Li) atoms based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. These quantities are determined using the imaginary parts of the scalar dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities, which are evaluated using the approach that we have proposed in [1]. Our procedure is fully ab initio, and avoids the sum-over-the-states method. We present the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of many of the low-lying excited states of Li. Also, the off-diagonal dipole and quadrupole polarizabilites between some of the low-lying states of…
Two different theoretical methods have been used to complete a new calculation of polarizability in the thallium 6p_{1/2}, 7s, and 7p_{1/2} states. The predictions of the two methods agree to within 1% for the 6p_{1/2} and 7s states and 2% for 7p_{1/2} state. We find that the theoretical expression for the 6p_{1/2} - 7s transition polarizability difference is dominated (greater than 90% contribution) by mixing of the 7s state with the 7p_{1/2} and 7p_{3/2} states. By comparing the theoretical expression to an existing Stark shift measurement [Doret et al., Phys. Rev. A 66, 052504 (2002)], new,…
Magneto-optically trapped atoms enable the determination of lifetimes of metastable states and higher lying excited states like the $\rm{5d^{2}~^{3}F_{2}}$ state in barium. The state is efficiently populated by driving strong transitions from metastable states within the cooling cycle of the barium MOT. The lifetime is inferred from the increase of MOT fluorescence after the transfer of up to $30\,\%$ of the trapped atoms to this state. The radiative decay of the $\rm{5d^{2}~^{3}F_{2}}$ state cascades to the cooling cycle of the MOT with a probability of $96.0(7)\,\%$ corresponding to a trap l…
Lifetimes of the first two metastable states in Sc^{2+} and Y^{2+} are determined using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. There is a considerable interest in studying the electron correlation effects in these ions as though their electronic configurations are similar to the neutral alkali atoms, their structures are very different from the latter. We have made a comparative study of the correlation trends between the above doubly ionized systems with their corresponding neutral and singly ionized iso-electronic systems. The lifetimes of the excited states of these ions are very importan…
The Stark shift of the ytterbium optical clock transition due to room temperature blackbody radiation is dominated by a static Stark effect, which was recently measured to high accuracy [J. A. Sherman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 153002 (2012)]. However, room temperature operation of the clock at 10^{-18} inaccuracy requires a dynamic correction to this static approximation. This dynamic correction largely depends on a single electric dipole matrix element for which theoretically and experimentally derived values disagree significantly. We determine this important matrix element by two indepe…
The results of ab initio calculation of E1 amplitudes, lifetimes, and polarizabilities for several low-lying levels of ytterbium are reported. The effective Hamiltonian for the valence electrons has been constructed in the frame of CI+MBPT method and solutions of many electron equation are found.
Current situation in studies of mean lifetimes of excited electronic-vibro-rotational states of hydrogen molecule (including the H2, D2, HD and T2 isotopomers) is reviewed in brief. All measured values of the lifetimes (published before November 2008) are collected and presented in tabular form. Complete bibliography of papers devoted to semi-empirical determination and non-empirical calculation of the lifetimes is presented. The experimental data obtained in various papers are compared with the results of semi-empirical determination and non-empirical calculations.
This work presents accurate ab initio determination of the hyperfine splitting for the ground state and few low-lying excited states of 113Cd+; important candidates for the frequency standard in the microwave region, using coupled-cluster theory (CC) in the relativistic framework. The calculated hyperfine splitting are well in agreement with recent experimental results. We have also carried out the lifetimes of the 5p2P1=2 and 5p2P3=2 states, which are in well agreement with recent experimental result (Moehring et al., PRA 73 023413, 2006). The roles of different electron correlation effects i…
We have investigated energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants ($A_{hyf}$) and electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of a number of low-lying states of the triply ionized tin (Sn$^{3+}$) by employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Contributions from the Breit interaction and lower-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in determination of above quantities are also given explicitly. These higher-order relativistic effects are found to be important for accurate evaluation of energies, while QED contributions are seen to be contributing significantly to the determination o…
When the atoms of a dimer remain most of the time very far apart, in so-called long-range molecular states, their mutual interaction is ruled by plain atomic properties. The high-resolution spectroscopic study of some molecular excited states populated by photoassociation of cold atoms (photoassociative spectroscopy) gives a good illustration of this property. It provides accurate determinations of atomic radiative lifetimes, which are known to be sensitive tests for atomic calculations. A number of such analyses has been performed up to now, for all stable alkali atoms and for some other atom…

This work presents accurate {\it ab initio} determination of the magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) hyperfine structure constants for the ground and a few low-lying excited states in $^{67}$Zn$^{+}$, which is one of the interesting systems in fundamental physics. The coupled-cluster (CC) theory within the relativistic framework has been used here in this calculations. Long standing demands for a relativistic and highly correlated calculations like CC can be able to resolve the disagreements among the lifetime estimations reported previously for a few low-lying states of Zn$^{+}$…
We present ab initio calculations of the $W_A$ parameter of the P-odd spin-rotational Hamiltonian for a variety of diatomic molecules, including the group--2 and --12 halides. The results were obtained by relativistic Dirac--Hartree--Fock and density functional theory approaches, and corrected for core polarization effects. Strong enhancement of $W_A$ is found for the group--12 diatomic halides, which should be helpful in future determination of the nuclear anapole moment.
Currently, the experimental uncertainty for the determination of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) decay rate is at 150 ppm precision; this is two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical one, at 1 ppm level. Here we propose a new proof of concept experiment aiming for an accuracy of 100 ppm to be able to test the second-order correction in the calculations, which is $\simeq 45\left(\fracαπ\right)^2\approx 200$ ppm. The improvement relies on a new technique to confine the o-Ps in a vacuum cavity. Moreover, a new method was developed to subtract the time dependent pick-off annihilation rate of…
The lifetime of the metastable 3P2 state of neon has been determined to 14.70(13) s (decay rate 0.06801(62) 1/s) by measuring the decay in fluorescence of an ensemble of Ne-20 atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Due to low background gas pressure p < 5 10^-11 mbar and low relative excitation to the 3D3 state (0.5% excitation probability) operation only small corrections have to be included in the lifetime extrapolation. Together with a careful analysis of residual loss mechanisms in the MOT a lifetime determination to high precision is achieved.
We present a new method for determining the intrinsic natural linewidth or lifetime of exceptionally long-lived optical excited states. Such transitions are key to the performance of state-of-the-art atomic clocks, have potential applications in searches for fundamental physics and gravitational wave detectors, as well as novel quantum many-body phenomena. With longer lifetime optical transitions, sensitivity is increased, but so far it has proved challenging to determine the natural lifetime of many of these long lived optical excited states because standard population decay detection techniq…
We report a precise determination of the lifetime of the (4p)$^2$P$_{3/2}$ state of $^{40}$Ca$^+$, $τ_{\textrm{P}_{3/2}}=6.639(42)$ ns, using a combination of measurements of the induced light shift and scattering rate on a single trapped ion. Good agreement with the result of a recent high-level theoretical calculation, $6.69(6)$ ns [Safronova et al., PRA 83, 012503 (2011)], but a 6-$σ$ discrepancy with the most precise previous experimental value, $6.924(19)$ ns [Jin et al., PRL 70, 3213 (1993)] is found. To corroborate the consistency and accuracy of the new measurements, relativistically c…
