We report a new technique to determine the van der Waals coeffcients of lithium (Li) atoms based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. These quantities are determined using the imaginary parts of the scalar dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities, which are evaluated using the approach that we have proposed in [1]. Our procedure is fully ab initio, and avoids the sum-over-the-states method. We present the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of many of the low-lying excited states of Li. Also, the off-diagonal dipole and quadrupole polarizabilites between some of the low-lying states of Li are calculated.
The first three dynamic multipole polarizabilities for the ground state of hydrogen, helium, hydride ion, and positronium hydride PsH have been computed using the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method and explicitly correlated wave functions. Results for the static dipole polarizability by means of the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method and the finite field approach show the VMC results to be quite accurate. From these dynamic polarizabilities van der Waals dispersion coefficients for the interaction of PsH with ordinary electronic systems can be computed, allowing one to predict the dispersion…
We investigate the role of the electron correlation effects in the calculations of the electric dipole polarizabilities (α) of elements belonging to three different groups of periodic table. To understand the propagation of the electron correlation effects at different levels of approximations, we employ the relativistic many-body methods developed, based on the first principles, at mean-field Dirac-Fock (DF), third order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT(3)), random-phase approximation (RPA) and the singly and doubly approximated coupled-cluster methods at the linearized (LCCSD) and non-lin…
The efficiency of optical trapping of ultracold atoms depend on the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability governing the atom-field interaction. In this article, we have calculated the real and imaginary parts of the dynamic dipole polarizability of dysprosium in the ground and first excited level. Due to the high electronic angular momentum of those two states, the polarizabilities possess scalar, vector and tensor contributions that we have computed, on a wide range of trapping wavelengths, using the sum-over-state formula. Using the same formalism, we have also calculated the $C_6$ coefficien…
The electric dipole polarizabilities evaluated at imaginary frequencies for hydrogen, the alkali-metal atoms, the alkaline earth atoms, and the inert gases are tabulated along with the resulting values of the atomic static polarizabilities, the atom-surface interaction constants, and the dispersion (or van der Waals) constants for the homonuclear and the heteronuclear diatomic combinations of the atoms.
The random-phase approximation with exchange (RPAE) is used with a $B$-spline basis to compute dynamic dipole polarizabilities of noble-gas atoms and several other closed-shell atoms (Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Sr, Cd, and Ba). From these, values of the van der Waals $C_6$ constants for positronium interactions with these atoms are determined and compared with existing data. Our best predictions of $C_6$ for Ps--noble-gas pairs are expected to be accurate to within 1%, and to within a few per cent for the alkaline earths. We also used accurate dynamic dipole polarizabilities from the literature to comput…
The van der Waals coefficients for the alkali-metal atoms from Na to Fr interacting in their ground states, are calculated using relativistic ab initio methods. The accuracy of the calculations is estimated by also evaluating atomic static electric dipole polarizabilities and coefficients for the interaction of the atoms with a perfectly conducting wall. The results are in excellent agreement with the latest data from ultra-cold collisions and from studies of magnetic field induced Feshbach resonances in Na and Rb. For Cs we provide critically needed data for ultra-cold collision studies.
We analyze the molecular electric dipole moments (PDMs) and static electric dipole polarizabilities of heteronuclear alkali dimers in their ground states by employing coupled-cluster theory, both in the non-relativistic and four-component relativistic frameworks. The roles of electron correlations as well as relativistic effects are demonstrated by studying them at different levels of theory, followed by a comprehensive treatment of error estimates. We compare our obtained values with the previous non-relativistic calculations, some of which include lower-order relativistic corrections, as wel…
A systematic study of the leading isotropic van der Waals coefficients for the alkali-metal atom + molecule and molecule + molecule systems is presented. Dipole moments and static and dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated employing high-level quantum chemistry calculations. The dispersion, induction, and rotational parts of the isotropic van der Waals coefficient are evaluated. The known van der Waals coefficients are then used to derive characteristics essential for simple models of the collisions involving the corresponding ultracold polar molecules.
We carry out relativistic many-body calculations of the static and dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground $6s^2 ^1S_0$ and the first excited $6s6p ^3P^o_0$ states of Yb. With these polarizabilities, we compute several properties of Yb relevant to optical lattice clocks operating on the $6s^2 ^1S_0 - 6s6p ^3P^o_0$ transition. We determine (i) the first four {\em magic} wavelengths of the laser field for which the frequency of the clock transition is insensitive to the laser intensity. While the first magic wavelength is known, we predict the second, the third and the forth magic waveleng…
We present revised measurements of the static electric dipole polarizabilities of K, Rb, and Cs based on atom interferometer experiments presented in [Phys. Rev. A 2015, 92, 052513] but now re-analyzed with new calibrations for the magnitude and geometry of the applied electric field gradient. The resulting polarizability values did not change, but the uncertainties were significantly reduced. Then we interpret several measurements of alkali metal atomic polarizabilities in terms of atomic oscillator strengths $f_{ik}$, Einstein coefficients $A_{ik}$, state lifetimes $τ_{k}$, transition dipole…
The static-exchange model (SEM) and the modified static-exchange model (MSEM) recently introduced by Ray [1] is applied to study the elastic collision between two hydrogen-like atoms when both are in ground states considering the system as a four-body Coulomb problem in the center of mass frame, in which all the Coulomb interaction terms in direct and exchange channels are treated exactly. The SEM includes the non-adiabatic short-range effect due to electron-exchange. The MSEM added in it, the long-range effect due to induced dynamic dipole polarizabilities between the atoms e.g. the Van der W…
The van der Waals coefficients and the separation dependent retardation functions of the interactions between the atomically thin films of the multi-layered transition metal molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) dichalcogenides with the alkali atoms are investigated. First, we determine the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity and intrinsic carrier density values for different layers of MoS$_2$ by adopting various fitting models to the recently measured optical data reported by Yu and co-workers [Sci. Rep. {\bf 5}, 16996 (2015)] using spectroscopy ellipsometry. Then, dynamic electric dipole po…
The damping coefficients for the alkali atoms are determined very accurately by taking into account the optical properties of the atoms and three distinct types of trapping materials such as Au (metal), Si (semi-conductor) and vitreous SiO2 (dielectric). Dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated precisely for the alkali atoms that reproduce the damping coefficients in the perfect conducting medium within 0.2% accuracy. Upon the consideration of the available optical data of the above wall materials, the damping coefficients are found to be substantially different than those of the ideal c…
We evaluate separation dependent van der Waal dispersion ($C_3$) coefficients for the interactions of the Li, Na, K and Rb alkali atoms with a graphene layer and with a single walled carbon nanotube (CNT) using the hydrodynamic and Dirac models. The results from both the models are evaluated using accurate values of the dynamic polarizabilities of the above atoms. Accountability of these accurate values of dynamical polarizabilities of the alkali atoms in determination of the above $C_3$ coefficients are accentuated by comparing them with the coefficients evaluated using the dynamic dipole pol…
In the present work, the calculations have been performed for dispersion interaction between heavy elements (Zn$^+$, Cd$^+$, Hg$^+$, Pb$^+$, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb) with graphene and carbon nanotubes by evaluating van der Waals $C_3$ coefficients using well-known Lifshitz theory. The dispersion coefficients are expressed in terms of reflection coefficients of graphene and carbon nanotubes which are calculated within the framework of Dirac model. In addition, accurate values of dynamic dipole polarizabilities at imaginary frequencies of considered ions and atoms which are vital, have been calculate…
We derive the relativistic formulas for the van der Waals coefficients of Yb-alkali dimers that correlate to ground and excited separated-atom limits. We calculate $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients of particular experimental interest. We also derive a semi-empirical formula that expresses the $C_8$ coefficient of heteronuclear $A+B$ dimers in terms of the $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients of homonuclear dimers and the static dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the atomic states $A$ and $B$. We report results of calculation of the $C_6$ coefficients for the Yb-Rb $^3/!P_1^o+5s\, ^2/!S_{1/2}$ and $^…
The long-range quadrupole-quadrupole ($\sim R^{-5}$) and leading dispersion ($\sim R^{-6}$) interactions between all pairs of excited Hg($6s6p$) $^3P_0$, $^3P_1$, $^3P_2$, and $^1P_1$ atoms are determined. The quadrupole moments are calculated using the {\it ab initio} relativistic configuration-interaction method coupled with many-body perturbation theory. The van der Waals coefficients are approximated using previously calculated static polarizabilities and expressions for the dispersion energy that are validated with similar systems. The long-range interactions are critical for associative …
The efficiency of optical trapping is determined by the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability, whose real and imaginary parts are associated with the potential energy and photon-scattering rate respectively. In this article we develop a formalism to calculate analytically the real and imaginary parts of the scalar, vector and tensor polarizabilities of lanthanide atoms. We assume that the sum-over-state formula only comprises transitions involving electrons in the valence orbitals like $6s$, $5d$, $6p$ or $7s$, while transitions involving $4f$ core electrons are neglected. Applying this formali…
Largely motivated by a number of applications, the van der Waals dispersion coefficients ($C_3$s) of the alkali ions (Li$^+$, Na$^+$, K$^+$ and Rb$^+$), the alkaline-earth ions (Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$) and the inert gas atoms (He, Ne, Ar and Kr) with a graphene layer are determined precisely within the framework of Dirac model. For these calculations, we have evaluated the dynamic polarizabilities of the above atomic systems very accurately by evaluating the transition matrix elements employing relativistic many-body methods and using the experimental values of the excitation energi…
We evaluate the electric-dipole and electric-quadrupole static and dynamic polarizabilities for the 6s^2 ^1S_0, 6s6p ^3P_0, and 6s6p ^3P_1 states and estimate their uncertainties. A methodology is developed for an accurate evaluation of the van der Waals coefficients of dimers involving excited state atoms with strong decay channel to the ground state. This method is used for evaluation of the long range interaction coefficients of particular experimental interest, including the C_6 coefficients for the Yb-Yb ^1S_0+^3P_{0,1} and ^3P_0+^3P_0 dimers and C_8 coefficients for the ^1S_0+^1S_0 and ^…
The observation of electric dipole moments (EDMs) in atomic systems due to parity and time-reversal violating (P,T-odd) interactions can probe new physics beyond the standard model and also provide insights into the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The EDMs of open-shell atomic systems are sensitive to the electron EDM and the P,T-odd scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) semi-leptonic interaction, but the dominant contributions to the EDMs of diamagnetic atoms come from the hadronic and tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) semi-leptonic interactions. Several diamagnetic atoms like $^{129}$Xe, $^{171}$…
We report \textit{ab initio} calculations of the X $^2 Σ_{u}^+$, A $^2Π_u$ and B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ states of the Ca$_{2}^+$ dimer. All electron CAS+MRCI calculations are performed for the X $^2 Σ_{u}^+$ and B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ states, while valence CAS+MRCI calculations using an effective core potential are used to describe the A $^2Π_u$ state. A double well is found in the B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ state. Spectroscopic constants, vibrational levels, transition moments and radiative lifetimes are calculated for the most abundant isotope of calcium ($^{40}$Ca). The static dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities, and…
We consider a narrow magneto-dipole transition in the $^{169}$Tm atom at the wavelength of $1.14\,μ$m as a candidate for a 2D optical lattice clock. Calculating dynamic polarizabilities of the two clock levels $[\text{Xe}]4f^{13}6s^2 (J=7/2)$ and $[\text{Xe}]4f^{13}6s^2 (J=5/2)$ in the spectral range from $250\,$nm to $1200\,$nm, we suggest the "magic" wavelength for the optical lattice at $807\,$nm. Frequency shifts due to black-body radiation (BBR), the van der Waals interaction, the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and other effects which can perturb the transition frequency are calculate…
