We carry out relativistic many-body calculations of the static and dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground $6s^2 ^1S_0$ and the first excited $6s6p ^3P^o_0$ states of Yb. With these polarizabilities, we compute several properties of Yb relevant to optical lattice clocks operating on the $6s^2 ^1S_0 - 6s6p ^3P^o_0$ transition. We determine (i) the first four {\em magic} wavelengths of the laser field for which the frequency of the clock transition is insensitive to the laser intensity. While the first magic wavelength is known, we predict the second, the third and the forth magic wavelengths to be 551 nm, 465 nm, and 413 nm. (ii) We reevaluate the effect of black-body radiation on the frequency of the clock transition, the resulting clock shift at $T=300 \mathrm{K}$ being $-1.41(17)$ Hz. (iii) We compute long-range interatomic van der Waals coefficients (in a.u.) $C_6(6s^2 ^1S_0 +6s^2 ^1S_0) = 1909(160)$, $C_6(6s^2 ^1S_0 + 6s6p ^3P_0) =2709(338) $, and $C_6(6s6p ^3P_0 + 6s6p ^3P_0) =3886(360) $. Finally, we determine the atom-wall interaction coefficients (in a.u.), $C_3 (6s^2 ^1S_0) =3.34$ and $C_3 (6s6p ^3P_0) =3.68$. We also address and resolve a disagreement between previous calculations of the static polarizability of the ground state.
We study the prospects of using transitions from the ytterbium ground state to metastable states $^3{\rm P}^{\rm o}_2$ at $E=19\,710.388~$cm$^{-1}$ and $4f^{13}5d6s^2\,(J=2)$ at $E=23\,188.518~$cm$^{-1}$ as clock transitions in an optical lattice clock. Having more than one clock transition in Yb could benefit the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model via studying the non-linearity of King's plot or the time-variation of the ratio of the frequencies of two clock transitions. We calculate the lifetime of the states, relevant transition amplitudes, systematic shifts, and the sensitivi…
We have developed an optical lattice clock that can operate in dual modes: a strontium (Sr) clock mode and an ytterbium (Yb) clock mode. Dual-mode operation of the Sr-Yb optical lattice clock is achieved by alternately cooling and trapping $^{87}$Sr and $^{171}$Yb atoms inside the vacuum chamber of the clock. Optical lattices for Sr and Yb atoms were arranged with horizontal and vertical configurations, respectively, resulting in a small distance of the order of 100 $μ$m between the trapped Sr and Yb atoms. The $^{1}$S$_{0}$-$^{3}$P$_{0}$ clock transitions in the trapped atoms were interrogate…
In this paper, we propose an in-depth review of the vector and tensor polarizabilities of the two energy levels of the 87Sr clock transition whose measurement was reported in [P. G. Westergaard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 210801 (2011)]. We conduct a theoretical calculation that reproduces the measured coefficients. In addition, we detail the experimental conditions used for their measurement in two Sr optical lattice clocks, and exhibit the quadratic behaviour of the vector and tensor shifts with the depth of the trapping potential and evaluate their impact on the accuracy of the clock.
Derivations for the higher tensor components of the quadrupole polarizabilities are given and their values for the metastable states of the Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth-metal ions are estimated. We also give the scalar quadrupole polarizabilities of the ground and metastable states of these ions to compare our results with the previously available theoretical and experimental results. Reasonably good agreement between our calculations with the previous values of scalar quadrupole polarizabilities demonstrate their correctness. The reported scalar and tensor quadrupole polarizabilit…
We address the problem of the lattice Stark shifts in the Sr clock caused by the multipolar $M1$ and $E2$ atom-field interactions and by the term nonlinear in lattice intensity and determined by the hyperpolarizability. We have developed an approach to calculate hyperpolarizabilities for atoms and ions based on a solution of the inhomogeneous equation which allows to effectively and accurately carry out complete summations over intermediate states. We applied our method to the calculation of the hyperpolarizabilities for the clock states in Sr. We also carried out an accurate calculation of th…

The progress in optical clock with uncertainty at a level of $10^{-18}$ requires unprecedented precision in estimating the contribution of multipolar and higher-order effects of atom-field interactions. Current theoretical and experimental results of dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities at the magic wavelength for the Sr clock differ substantially. We develop a combined approach of the Dirac-Fock plus core polarization (DFCP) and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) methods to calculate dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of the Sr ato…
A calculation of the blackbody radiation shift of the B$^+$ clock transition is performed. The polarizabilities of the B$^+$ $2s^2$ $^1$S$^e$, $2s2p$ $^1$P$^o$, and $2s2p$ $^3$P$^o$ states are computed using the configuration interaction method with an underlying semi-empirical core potential. The recommended dipole polarizabilities are 9.64(3) $a_0^3$, 7.78(3) $a_0^3$ and 16.55(5) $a_0^3$ respectively. The derived frequency shift for the $2s^2$ $^1$S$^e$ $\to$ $2s2p$ $^3$P$^o_0$ transition at 300 K is 0.0160(5) Hz. The dipole polarizabilities agree with an earlier relativistic calculation (Sa…
We present a measurement of the dynamic scalar and tensor polarizabilities of the excited state 3D1 in atomic ytterbium. The polarizabilities were measured by analyzing the spectral lineshape of the 408-nm 1S0->3D1 transition driven by a standing wave of resonant light in the presence of static electric and magnetic fields. Due to the interaction of atoms with the standing wave, the lineshape has a characteristic polarizability-dependent distortion. A theoretical model was used to simulate the lineshape and determine a combination of the polarizabilities of the ground and excited states by fit…
We describe Doppler spectroscopy of Bose-Einstein condensates of ytterbium atoms using a narrow optical transition. We address the optical clock transition around 578 nm between the ${^1}S_0$ and ${^3}P_0$ states with a laser system locked on a high-finesse cavity. We show how the absolute frequency of the cavity modes can be determined within a few tens of kHz using high-resolution spectroscopy on molecular iodine. We show that optical spectra reflect the velocity distribution of expanding condensates in free fall or after releasing them inside an optical waveguide. We demonstrate sub-kHz spe…
An atom exposed to an electric field will experience Stark shifts of its internal energy levels, proportional to their polarizabilities. In optical frequency metrology, the Stark shift due to background black-body radiation (BBR) modifies the frequency of the optical clock transition, and often represents a large contribution to a clock's uncertainty budget. For clocks based on singly-ionized ytterbium, the ion's complex structure makes this shift difficult to calculate theoretically. We present a measurement of the differential polarizabilities of two ultra-narrow optical clock transitions pr…
Static dipole polarizabilities are calculated in the ground and metastable states of Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. Trends of the electron correlation effects are investigated in these atomic ions. We also estimate the Stark and black-body radiation shifts from these results for these systems for the transitions proposed for the optical frequency standards and compare them with available experimental data.
In this paper we present the realization of a compact, high-power laser system able to excite the Ytterbium clock transition at 578 nm. Starting from an external-cavity laser based on a quantum dot chip at 1156 nm with an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator, we were able to obtain up to 60 mW of visible light at 578 nm via frequency doubling. The laser is locked with a 500 kHz bandwidth to a ultra-low-expansion glass cavity stabilized at its zero coefficient of thermal expansion temperature through an original thermal insulation and correction system. This laser allowed the observation of the…
We present precise values of the dipole polarizabilities ($α$) of the ground $\rm [4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2}$ and metastable $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states of Yb$^+$, that are %vital {\bf important} in reducing systematics in the clock frequency of the $\rm[4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow [4f^{14}5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ transition. The static values of $α$ for the ground and $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states are estimated to be $9.8(1) \times 10^{-40} \,\,\rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ and $17.6(5) \times 10^{-40}\,\, \rm Jm^2V^{-2}$, respectively, while the tensor contribution to the $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~…
Experimental and theoretical study of dynamic polarizabilities in the $5S_{1/2}$-$5D_{5/2}$ clock transition in rubidium-87 and determination of E1 matrix elements
We experimentally investigate the lattice-induced light shift by the electric-quadrupole ($E2$) and magnetic-dipole ($M1$) polarizabilities and the hyperpolarizability in Sr optical lattice clocks. Precise control of the axial as well as the radial motion of atoms in a one-dimensional lattice allows observing the $E2$-$M1$ polarizability difference. Measured polarizabilities determine an operational lattice depth to be $72(2) E_R$, where the total light shift cancels to the $10^{-19}$ level, over a lattice-intensity variation of about 30%. This operational trap depth and its allowable intensit…
We evaluated the C_6 coefficients of Yb-Yb and Yb -alkali/group II van der Waals interactions with 2% uncertainty. The only existing results for such quantities are for the Yb-Yb dimer. Our value, C_6=1929(39) a.u., is in excellent agreement with the recent experimental determination of 1932(35) a.u. We have also developed a new approach for the calculation of the dynamic correction to the blackbody radiation shift. We have calculated this quantity for the Yb 6s^2 ^1S_0 - 6s6p ^3P_0 clock transition with 3.5% uncertainty. This reduces the fractional uncertainty due to the blackbody radiation s…
Compact and robust ion traps for thorium are enabling technology for the next generation of atomic clocks based on a low-energy isomeric transition in the thorium-229 nucleus. We aim at a laser ablation loading of single triply ionized thorium in a radio-frequency electromagnetic linear Paul trap. Detection of ions is based on a modified mass spectrometer and a channeltron with single-ion sensitivity. In this study, we successfully created and detected 232Th+ and 232Th2+ ions from plasma plumes, studied their yield evolution, and compared the loading to a quadrupole ion trap with Yb. We explor…
We study a wide range of neutral atoms and ions suitable for ultra-precise atomic optical clocks with naturally suppressed black body radiation shift of clock transition frequency. Calculations show that scalar polarizabilities of clock states cancel each other for at least one order of magnitude for considered systems. Results for calculations of frequencies, quadrupole moments of the states, clock transition amplitudes and natural widths of upper clock states are presented.
We apply relativistic many-body methods to compute static differential polarizabilities for transitions inside the ground-state hyperfine manifolds of monovalent atoms and ions. Knowing this transition polarizability is required in a number of high-precision experiments, such as microwave atomic clocks and searches for CP-violating permanent electric dipole moments. While the traditional polarizability arises in the second-order of interaction with the externally-applied electric field, the differential polarizability involves additional contribution from the hyperfine interaction of atomic el…
Black-body radiation (BBR) shifts of $^3\!P_0-^1\!S_0$ clock transition in divalent atoms Cd and Zn are evaluated using accurate relativistic many-body techniques of atomic structure. Static polarizabilities of the clock levels and relevant electric-dipole matrix elements are computed. We also present a comparative overview of the BBR shifts in optical clocks based on neutral divalent atoms trapped in optical lattices.
The finite field calculations are performed for two heavy frequency-standard candidates In$^+$ and Sr. The progressive hierarchy of electron correlations is implemented by the relativistic coupled-cluster and configuration interaction methods combined with basis set of increasing size. The dipole polarizabilities, dipole hyperpolarizabilities, quadrupole moments, and quadrupole polarizabilities are recommended for the ground state 5s$^2$ $^1S_0$ and low-lying states 5s5p $^3P^{\rm o}_{0,1,2}$ of In$^+$ and Sr. Comparative study of the fully and scalar relativistic electron correlation calculat…
We evaluate the electric-dipole and electric-quadrupole static and dynamic polarizabilities for the 6s^2 ^1S_0, 6s6p ^3P_0, and 6s6p ^3P_1 states and estimate their uncertainties. A methodology is developed for an accurate evaluation of the van der Waals coefficients of dimers involving excited state atoms with strong decay channel to the ground state. This method is used for evaluation of the long range interaction coefficients of particular experimental interest, including the C_6 coefficients for the Yb-Yb ^1S_0+^3P_{0,1} and ^3P_0+^3P_0 dimers and C_8 coefficients for the ^1S_0+^1S_0 and ^…
Laser cooling is a key ingredient for quantum control of atomic systems in a variety of settings. In divalent atoms, two-stage Doppler cooling is typically used to bring atoms to the uK regime. Here, we implement a pulsed radial cooling scheme using the ultranarrow 1S0-3P0 clock transition in ytterbium to realize sub-recoil temperatures, down to tens of nK. Together with sideband cooling along the one-dimensional lattice axis, we efficiently prepare atoms in shallow lattices at an energy of 6 lattice recoils. Under these conditions key limits on lattice clock accuracy and instability are reduc…
Ionic clocks exhibit as the most promising candidates for the frequency standards. Recent investigations show the profound advantages of interrogating two laser beams with different frequencies in developing the frequency standards. Here we present a scheme of a two-photon mechanism to calculate the dynamic polarizabilities for the clock states, 6$^2$S$_{\frac{1}{2}}$ and 5$^2$D$_{\frac{3}{2}, \frac{5}{2}}$, of Ba$^+$ by employing relativistic coupled-cluster method. We illustrate the Stark-shift cancellation between these clock states at the two-photon magic wavelengths. These magic wavelengt…
The combination of the configuration interaction method and all-order single-double coupled-cluster technique is used to calculate excitation energies, ionization potentials and static dipole polarizabilities of superheavy elements nobelium, lawrencium and rutherfordium. Breit and quantum electrodynamic corrections are also included. The results for the superheavy elements are compared with earlier calculations where available. Similar calculations for lighter analogs, ytterbium, lutetium, and hafnium are used to study the accuracy of the calculations. The estimated uncertainties of the final …
In the recent work [A.~Yamaguchi et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 123}, 113201 (2019)] Cd has been identified as an excellent candidate for a lattice clock. Here, we carried out computations needed for further clock development and made an assessment of the higher-order corrections to the light shift of the $5s^2\, ^1\!S_0$--$5s5p\, ^3\!P_0^o$ clock transition. We carried out calculations of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole polarizabilities and linear and circular hyperpolarizabilities of the $5s^2\, ^1\!S_0$ and $5s5p\, ^3\!P_0^o$ clock states at the magic wavelength and estimated unc…
The present work determines the precise values of magic wavelengths corresponding to the clock transitions 5$^2S$-4$^2D$ of Y$^{2+}$ ion both at the levels of fine- and hyperfine-structures due to the external light beams having linear as well as circular polarization. To calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the associated states of the transitions, we employ the sum-over-states technique, where the dominating and correlation sensitive part of the sum is evaluated using a highly correlated relativistic coupled-cluster theory. The estimated magic wavelengths of the light beams have substan…
The blackbody radiation shift of the Ga$^+$ $4s^2 \ ^1S^e_0 \to 4s4p \ ^3P^o_0$ clock transition is computed to be $-$$0.0140 \pm 0.0048$ Hz at 300 K. The small shift is consistent with the blackbody shifts of the clock transitions of other group III ions which are of a similar size. The polarizabilities of the Ga$^+$ $4s^2 \ ^1S^e_0$, $4s4p \ ^3P^o_0$, and $4s4p \ ^1P^o_1$ states were computed using the configuration interaction method with an underlying semi-empirical core potential. A byproduct of the analysis involved large scale calculations of the low lying spectrum and oscillator streng…
We study the $^1$S$_0 - ^3$D$_2$ and $^1$S$_0 - ^3$D$_3$ transitions in Cu II and the $^1$S$_0 - ^3$P$^{\rm o}_2$ transition in Yb III as possible candidates for the optical clock transitions. A recently developed version of the configuration (CI) method, designed for a large number of electrons above closed-shell core, is used to carry out the calculation. We calculate excitation energies, transition rates, lifetimes, scalar static polarizabilities of the ground and clock states, and blackbody radiation shift. We demonstrate that the considered transitions have all features of the clock trans…
We developed a high-power laser system at a wavelength of 399 nm for laser cooling of ytterbium atoms with ultraviolet laser diodes. The system is composed of an external cavity laser diode providing frequency stabilized output at a power of 40 mW and another laser diode for amplifying the laser power up to 220 mW by injection locking. The systematic method for optimization of our injection locking can also be applied to high power light sources at any other wavelengths. Our system, which does not depend on complex nonlinear frequency-doubling, has great importance for implementing transportab…
Singly-ionized ytterbium, with ultra-narrow optical clock transitions at 467 nm and 436 nm, is a convenient system for the realization of optical atomic clocks and tests of present-day variation of fundamental constants. We present the first direct measurement of the frequency ratio of these two clock transitions, without reference to a cesium primary standard, and using the same single ion of 171Yb+. The absolute frequencies of both transitions are also presented, each with a relative standard uncertainty of $6\times 10^{-16}$. Combining our results with those from other experiments, we repor…
We show that optical spectroscopy of Rydberg states can provide accurate {\em in situ} thermometry at room-temperature. Transitions from a metastable state to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers of 25 to 30 have 200 times larger fractional frequency sensitivities to blackbody radiation than the Strontium clock transition. We demonstrate that magic wavelength lattices exist for both Strontium and Ytterbium transitions between the metastable and Rydberg states. Frequency measurements of Rydberg transitions with $10^{-16}$ accuracy provide $10 \, \mathrm{mK}$ resolution and yield a blac…
Progress in atomic optical clocks with total uncertainty of $10^{-18}$ or below requires a precise estimation of multipolar and higher-order effects due to atom-field interactions. Magnesium is an attractive candidate for optical lattice clocks because it is insensitive to blackbody radiation and has a large quality factor. We employ a combined method of the Dirac-Fock plus core polarization and the relativistic configuration interaction to calculate the dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and the hyperpolarizabilities of the atomic Mg clock. The lattice light shift against variation of the la…
We study ultracold collisions in fermionic ytterbium by precisely measuring the energy shifts they impart on the atom's internal clock states. Exploiting Fermi statistics, we uncover p-wave collisions, in both weakly and strongly interacting regimes. With the higher density afforded by two-dimensional lattice confinement, we demonstrate that strong interactions can lead to a novel suppression of this collision shift. In addition to reducing the systematic errors of lattice clocks, this work has application to quantum information and quantum simulation with alkaline-earth atoms.
With direct polarizability measurements we demonstrated extremely low sensitivity of the inner-shell clock transition at $1.14\,μ$m in Tm atoms to external dc electric fields and black-body radiation (BBR). We measured differential polarizabilities of clock levels in Tm at wavelengths of 810--860\,nm and at 1064\,nm and inferred the static scalar differential polarizability of the inner-shell clock transition of $-0.047(18)$ atomic units corresponding to only $2\times10^{-18}$ fractional frequency shift from BBR at the room temperature. This is a few orders of magnitude smaller compared to the…
The microwave clock frequency of the $|5s~^2S_{1/2}, F=0,m_F=0 \rangle \leftrightarrow |5s~^2S_{1/2}, F=1,m_F=0 \rangle$ transition in the $^{113}$Cd$^+$ ion has been reported as 15199862855.0192(10) Hz [Opt. Lett. {\bf 40}, 4249 (2015)]. Fractional systematic due to the black-body radiation (BBR) shift ($β$) arising from the Stark effect in the above clock transition was used as $-1.1 \times 10^{-16}$ from our unpublished preliminary estimation. We present here a precise value as $β=-1.815(77) \times 10^{-16}$ by carrying out rigorous calculations of third-order polarizabilities of the hyperf…
We measure the dynamic differential scalar polarizabilities at 10.6 $μ$m for two candidate clock transitions in $^{176}\mathrm{Lu}^+$. The fractional black body radiation (BBR) shifts at 300 K for the $^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {^3D_1}$ and $^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {^3D_2}$ transitions are evaluated to be $-1.36\,(9) \times 10^{-18}$ and $2.70 \,(21) \times10^{-17}$, respectively. The former is the lowest of any established optical atomic clock.
