We have developed a new method based on two cavities containing $χ^{(2)}$ media to reshape optical pulses by an all-optical technique. The system is entirely passive \emph{i.e.}, all the energy is brought by the incoming pulse and uses two successive optical cavities with independent thresholds. The output pulse is close to a rectangular shape. We show that this technique could be extended to high bit rates and telecommunication wavelength using very small cavities containing current nonlinear materials.
We study the propagation of electromagnetic pulses through photonic bandgap materials and relate time-domain pulse reshaping to observable transit times. For layered dielectric mirrors we demonstrate how pulse reshaping of slowly varying classical fields results in transit-time delays that are equivalent to the group delay. The time-domain analysis emphasizes the causal origin of negative group delays. We also study an analogous fully-quantized model and show how the same time-domain analysis may be used to interpret observed delays of single-photon fields.
Ionization is a fundamental process in intense laser-matter interactions, and is known to cause plasma defocusing and intensity clamping. Here, we investigate theoretically the propagation dynamics of an intense laser pulse in a helium gas jet in the ionization saturation regime, and we find that the pulse undergoes self-focusing and self-compression through ionization-induced reshaping, resulting in a manyfold increase in the laser intensity. This unconventional behavior is associated with the spatiotemporal frequency variation mediated by ionization and spatiotempral coupling. Our results il…
We experimentally demonstrate temporal reshaping of optical waveforms in the telecom wavelength band using the principle of quantum frequency conversion. The reshaped optical pulses do not undergo any wavelength translation. The interaction takes place in a nonlinear $χ^{(2)}$ waveguide using an appropriately designed pump pulse programmed via an optical waveform generator. We show reshaping of a single-peak pulse into a double-peak pulse and vice versa. We also show that exponentially decaying pulses can be reshaped into near Gaussian shape, and vice versa, which is a useful functionality for…
We theoretically investigate the response of optical phase conjugators to incident probe pulses. In the stable (sub-threshold) operating regime of an optical phase conjugator it is possible to transmit probe pulses with a superluminally advanced peak, whereas conjugate reflection is always subluminal. In the unstable (above-threshold) regime, superluminal response occurs both in reflection and in transmission, at times preceding the onset of exponential growth due to the instability.
All-optical Compton scattering is a remarkable method of generating high-quality $γ$ radiation source. It is easier achieved in experiment by employing a pulse based on laser wakefield accelerator. The driving laser is backward reflected when wakefield acceleration stage is over and thus it naturally collides with energetic electrons. To increase reflected pulse intensity, parabolic focusing plasma mirror instead of flat reflecting target is usually adopted. But concave focusing mirror also deteriorates the emitted photon beam monochromaticity and collimation. We propose using stepped focusing…
We present a theoretical study of transient absorption and reshaping of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by helium atoms dressed with a moderately strong infrared (IR) laser field. We formulate the atomic response using both the frequency-dependent absorption cross section and a time-frequency approach based on the time-dependent dipole induced by the light fields. The latter approach can be used in cases when an ultrafast dressing pulse induces transient effects, and/or when the atom exchanges energy with multiple frequency components of the XUV field. We first characterize the dressed atom r…
We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a temporal pulse doublet from the propagation of an initial super-Gaussian waveform in a nonlinear focusing medium. The picosecond structures are characterized both in amplitude and phase and their close-to-Gaussian Fourier-transform limited shape is found in excellent agreement with numerical simulations. This nonlinear fiber-based single-stage reshaping scheme is energy efficient, can sustain GHz repetition rates and temporal compression factors around 10 are demonstrated.
In recent years resonant semiconductor and all-dielectric nanophotonics offered a lot of possibilities for thermally-induced light manipulation at the nanoscale. Owing to high-quality resonant states, such nanostructures allow for efficient light-to-heat conversion supported by various temperature detection approaches based on thermally sensitive intrinsic optical responses (photoluminescence, Raman scattering, thermorefraction etc.). In this work, we study theoretically a phenomenon of the photothermal reshaping of the radiation pattern of second-harmonic generation (SHG) that occurs in reson…
We show that arrival times for electromagnetic pulses measured through the rate of absorption in an ideal impedance matched detector are equivalent to the arrival times using the average flow of optical energy as proposed by Peatross {\it et al.} [ Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 2370 (2000)]. We then investigate the transport of optical pulses through dispersive media with negative dielectric permittivity and negative refractive index choosing the geometry such that no resonant effects come into play. For evanescent waves, the definitions of the group delay and the reshaping delay get interchanged…
Transmission through photoexcited semiconductors is used to temporally and spectrally shape a Terahertz pulse. By adjusting the optical pump-THz probe delay, we experimentally introduce a polar asymmetry in the pulse profile as high as 92%. To shape the spectrum, we apply the same technique after strongly chirping the Terahertz pulse. This led to significant reshaping of the spectrum with a 52% upshift of spectrum median. Pulse shaping techniques introduced here are of particular importance for temporal and spectral shape-sensitive THz nonlinear experiments.
An optical trapping scheme is proposed by which ultrashort low-amplitude radiations, co-propagating with a continuous train of temporal pulses in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with Raman-inactive noble gases, can be trapped and reshaped into optical soliton trains by means of cross-phase modulation interactions. The scheme complements and extends a recently proposed idea that a single-pulse soliton could trap an ultrashort small-amplitude radiation in a symmetric hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with a noble gas, thus preventing its dispersion [M. F. Saleh and F. Biancal…
We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of spatio-temporal propagation effects in terahertz (THz) generation in gases using two-color ionizing laser pulses. The observed strong broadening of the THz spectra with increasing gas pressure reveals the prominent role of spatio-temporal reshaping and of a plasma-induced blue-shift of the pump pulses in the generation process. Results obtained from (3+1)-dimensional simulations are in good agreement with experimental findings and clarify the mechanisms responsible for THz emission.
We study the generation of parabolic self-similar optical pulses in tapered Si photonic nanowires (Si-PhNWs) both at telecom (λ=1.55 μm) and mid-IR (λ=2.2 μm) wavelengths. Our computational study is based on a rigorous theoretical model, which fully describes the influence of linear and nonlinear optical effects on pulse propagation in Si-PhNWs with arbitrarily varying width. Numerical simulations demonstrate that, in the normal dispersion regime, optical pulses evolve naturally into parabolic pulses upon propagating in millimeter-long tapered Si-PhNWs, with the efficiency of this pulse reshap…
We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous spatial and temporal compression in the propagation of light pulses in multimode nonlinear optical fibers. We reveal that the spatial beam self-cleaning recently discovered in graded-index multimode fibers is accompanied by significant temporal reshaping and up to four-fold shortening of the injected sub-nanosecond laser pulses. Since the nonlinear coupling among the modes strongly depends on the instantaneous power, we explore the entire range of the nonlinear dynamics with a single optical pulse, where the optical power is continuously varied across…
We theoretically and experimentally investigate the design of a high-repetition rate source delivering well-separated picosecond pulses thanks to the nonlinear compression of a dual-frequency beat signal within a cavity-less normally dispersive fiber-based setup. This system is well described by a set of two coupled NLS equations for which the usual normally dispersive defocusing regime is turned in a focusing temporal lens through a degenerated cross-phase modulation effect. More precisely, the temporal compression of the initial beating is performed by the combined effects of normal GVD and …
It is well known that optical media create artificial geometry for light, and curved geometry acts as an effective optical medium. This correspondence originates from the form invariance of Maxwells equations, which recently has spawned a booming field called transformation optics. Here we investigate responses of three transformation media under electromagnetic pulses, and find that pulse radiation can induce unbalanced net force on transformation media, which will cause translation and rotation of transformation media although their final momentum can still be zero. Therefore, the transforma…
The generation of THz radiation from ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses propagating in metallic hollow waveguides filled with Ar is numerically studied. We observe a strong reshaping of the low-frequency part of the spectrum. Namely, after several millimeters of propagation the spectrum is extended from hundreds of GHz up to ~150 THz. For longer propagation distances, nearly single-cycle near-infrared pulses with wavelengths around 4.5 um are obtained by appropriate spectral filtering, with an efficiency of up to 0.25%.
A method is shown for preventing temporal broadening of ultrafast optical pulses in highly dispersive and fluctuating media for arbitrary signal-pulse profiles. Pulse pairs, consisting of a strong-field control-pulse and a weak-field signal-pulse co-propagate, whereby the specific profile of the strong-field pulse precisely compensates for dispersive phase in the weak pulse. A numerical example is presented in an optical system consisting of both resonant and gain dispersive effects. Here we show signal-pulses that do not temporally broaden across a vast propagation distance, even in the prese…
We demonstrate numerically a method of focusing two-photon field inside one-dimensional random media. The approach is based on coherent control of backscattering achieved by adaptive spectral pulse shaping. The spectral phases of a femtosecond laser pulse are adjusted for the constructive interference of its backward-traveling components, resulting in an enhanced reflection from within the random system. A delayed forward-propagating second pulse overlaps with the controlled reflection, increasing the inter-pulse multi-photon field at a location determined by the delay between the two pulses. …
We analytically study the linear propagation of arbitrarily shaped light-pulses through an absorbing medium with a narrow transparency-window or through a resonant amplifying medium. We point out that, under certain general conditions, the pulse acquires a nearly Gaussian shape, irrespective of its initial shape and of the spectral profile of the line. We explicitly derive in this case the pulse parameters, including its skewness responsible for a deviation of the delay of the pulse maximum from the group delay. We illustrate our general results by analysing the slow-light experiments having d…
Unidirectional pulse propagation equations [UPPE, Phys. Rev. E 70, 036604 (2004)] have provided a theoretical underpinning for computer-aided investigations into dynamics of high-power ultrashort laser pulses and have been successfully utilized for almost a decade. Unfortunately, they are restricted to applications in bulk media or, with additional approximations, to simple waveguide geometries in which only a few guided modes can approximate the propagating waveform. The purpose of this work is to generalize the directional pulse propagation equations to structures characterized by strong ref…
We derive a nonlinear envelope equation to describe the propagation of broadband optical pulses in second order nonlinear materials. The equation is first order in the propagation coordinate and is valid for arbitrarily wide pulse bandwidth. Our approach goes beyond the usual coupled wave description of $χ^{(2)}$ phenomena and provides an accurate modelling of the evolution of ultra-broadband pulses also when the separation into different coupled frequency components is not possible or not profitable.
From long time transverse and longitudinal optical forces are used for non-contact and noninvasive manipulation of small particle. The following question arises: What is the impact of these forces on the continuous media as air and silica. In this work we obtain analytical expressions for radiation force and radiation potential in dipole approximation of laser pulses propagating in dielectric media. The longitudinal force is proportional to the second time derivative of the intensity profile. At fixed initial energy of a laser pulse, as shorter is the pulse as bigger is the force. It is possib…
In this paper, we describe analytically the propagation of Airy-type pulses truncated by a finite-time aperture when second and third order dispersion effects are considered. The mathematical method presented here, based on the superposition of exponentially truncated Airy pulses, is very effective, allowing us to avoid the use of time-consuming numerical simulations. We analyze the behavior of the time truncated Ideal-Airy pulse and also the interesting case of a time truncated Airy pulse with a "defect" in its initial profile, which reveals the self-healing property of this kind of pulse sol…
Light scattering in inhomogeneous media induces wavefront distortions which pose an inherent limitation in many optical applications. Examples range from microscopy and nanosurgery to astronomy. In recent years, ongoing efforts have made the correction of spatial distortions possible by wavefront shaping techniques. However, when ultrashort pulses are employed scattering induces temporal distortions which hinder their use in nonlinear processes such as in multiphoton microscopy and quantum control experiments. Here we show that correction of both spatial and temporal distortions can be attaine…
Via solution of appropriate variational problem it is shown that light beams with Gaussian spatial profile and sufficiently short duration provide maximal destruction of global coherence under nonlinear self-modulation.
We report an asymmetric behavior of optical pulses during their propagation through a time-varying linear optical medium. The refractive index of the medium is considered to be varying with time and complex such that a sufficient amount of gain and loss is present to realize their effect on pulse propagation. We have exploited the universal formula for optical fields in time-varying media. Numerically simulated results reveal that pulses undergo opposite temporal shifts around their initial center position during their bi-directional propagation through the medium along with corresponding spec…
In this paper we perform a fusion between two important theoretical methodologies, one related to the Frozen Wave beams, which are non-diffracting beams whose longitudinal intensity pattern can be chosen a priori in an medium (absorbing or not), and the other related to the Airy-Type pulses, which are pulses resistant to dispersion effects in dispersive materials. As a result, a new method emerges, capable of providing vortex pulses resistant to three concomitant effects, i.e.: diffraction, dispersion and attenuation; while concurrently the spatial variation of the wave intensity along its axi…
Using the Kantorovitch method in combination with a Gaussian ansatz, we derive the equations of motion for spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal optical propagation in a dispersive Kerr medium with a general transverse and spectral gain profile. By rewriting the variational equations as differential equations for the temporal and spatial Gaussian q parameters, optical ABCD matrices for the Kerr effect, a general transverse gain profile and nonparabolic spectral gain filtering are obtained. Further effects can easily be taken into account by adding the corresponding ABCD matrices. Applications i…
The spatial dynamics of pulses in Kerr media with parabolic index profile are examined. It is found that when diffraction and graded-index have opposite signs propagating pulses exhibit an oscillatory pattern, similar to a breathing behavior. Furthermore, if the pulse and the index profile are not aligned the pulse oscillates around the index origin with frequency that depends on the values of the diffraction and index of refraction. These oscillations are not observed when diffraction and graded-index share the same sign.
The solution of the wave equation in the envelope approximation with temporal corrections for a laser pulse propagating in a medium where the Kerr effect, field ionization, and associated absorption take place, is obtained through a first-order perturbative approach. The closed-form expressions so obtained clarify the influence of the various terms of the equation on the laser amplitude and on the frequency generation as a function of the retarded time. Furthermore, they allow extracting scaling parameters which size the nonlinear effects. The results are illustrated quantitatively on the case…
An examination of the propagation of intense 200 fs pulses in water reveals light filaments not sustained by the balance between Kerr-induced self-focusing and plasma-induced defocusing. Their appearance is interpreted as the consequence of a spontaneous reshaping of the wave packet form a gaussian into a conical wave, driven by the requirement of maximum localization, minimum losses and stationarity in the presence of non-linear absorption.
By using a powerful reductive perturbation technique, or a multiscale analysis, a generic Kadomtsev-Petviashvili evolution equation governing the propagation of femtosecond spatiotemporal optical solitons in quadratic nonlinear media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximation is put forward. Direct numerical simulations show the formation, from adequately chosen few-cycle input pulses, of both stable line solitons (in the case of a quadratic medium with normal dispersion) and of stable lumps (for a quadratic medium with anomalous dispersion). Besides, a typical example of the decay of th…
We present a systematic study on linear propagation of ultrashort laser pulses in media with dispersion, dispersionless media and vacuum. The applied method of amplitude envelopes gives the opportunity to estimate the limits of slowly warring amplitude approximation and to describe an amplitude integro-differential equation, governing the propagation of optical pulses in single cycle regime. The well known slowly varying amplitude equation and the amplitude equation for vacuum are written in dimensionless form. Three parameters are obtained defining different linear regimes of the optical puls…
In recent experiments, localized and stationary pulses have been generated in second-order nonlinear processes with femtosecond pulses, whose asymptotic features relate with those of nondiffracting and nondispersing polychromatic Bessel beams in linear dispersive media. We investigate on the nature of these linear waves, and show that they can be identified with the X-shaped (O-shaped) modes of the hyperbolic (elliptic) wave equation in media with normal (anomalous) dispersion. Depending on the relative strengths of mode phase mismatch, group velocity mismatch with respect to a plane pulse, an…
Advances in the amplification and manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses has led to revolutions in several areas. Examples include chirped pulse amplification for generating high peak-power lasers, power-scalable amplification techniques, pulse shaping via modulation of spatially-dispersed laser pulses, and efficient frequency-mixing in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals to access new spectral regions. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a new platform for nonlinear optics which has the potential to combine all of these separate functionalities (pulse amplification, frequency trans…
We study the prospects of controlling transmission of broadband and bi-chromatic laser pulses through turbid samples. The ability to focus transmitted broadband light is limited via both the scattering properties of the medium, and the technical characteristics of the experimental set-up. There are two time scales, given by pulse stretching in the near- and far-field regions, which define the maximum bandwidth of a pulse amenable to focusing. In the geometric optics regime of wave propagation in the medium, a single set-up can be optimal for focusing light at frequencies w and nw simultaneousl…
An optical kink is a shock-wave-like field structure which can appear in a resonant two-level medium as a result of the nonlinear process of self-steepening. We numerically simulate this process using an adiabatically switching waveform as an input and confirm the self-similarity of resulting kinks. The analysis is also applicable to a more general waveform with a decaying trailing edge which we call a kinklike pulse. We study in detail collisions of kinks with other kinks and ultrashort pulses and demonstrate the possibility to control kink speed by changing the parameters of counterpropagati…
We study the short pulse dynamics in the deterministic and stochastic environment in this thesis. The integrable short pulse equation is a modelling equation for ultra-short pulse propagation in the infrared range in the optical fibers. We investigate the numerical proof for the exact solitary solution of the short pulse equation. Moreover, we demonstrate that the short pulse solitons approximate the solution of the Maxwell equation numerically. Our numerical experiments prove the particle-like behaviour of the short pulse solitons. Furthermore, we derive a short pulse equation in the higher o…
We present an extension of the canonical coupled mode theory of electromagnetic waves to the case of pulses and spatio-temporal perturbations in complex media. Unlike previous attempts to derive such a model, our approach involves no approximation, and does not impose any restriction on the spatio-temporal profile. Moreover, the effect of modal dispersion on mode evolution and on the coupling to other modes is fully taken into account. Thus, our approach can yield any required accuracy by retaining as many terms in the expansion as needed. It also avoids various artifacts of previous derivatio…
In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a new way of controlling the group velocity of an optical pulse by using a combination of spectral hole burning, slow light effect and linear Stark effect in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal. The group velocity can be changed continuously by a factor of 20 without significant pulse distortion or absorption of the pulse energy. With a similar technique, an optical pulse can also be compressed in time. Theoretical simulations were developed to simulate the group velocity control and the pulse compression processes. The group velocity as well as the pu…

Laser Pulse Diagnostics of Ultrafast <8 fs Pulses Through Two-Photon Absorption Fluorescence In Liquid Media -- The Role of GVD and Third-Order Dispersion
The linear and nonlinear pulse propagations in lifetime-broadened three-state media with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically. Three generic systems of V-, $Λ$-, and $Ξ$-type level configurations are considered and compared. It is shown that in linear propagation regime the SGC in the V-type system can result in a significant change of dispersion and absorption and may be used to completely eliminate the absorption and largely reduce the group velocity of a probe field. However, the SGC has no effect on the dispersion and absorption of the $Λ$- and $Ξ$-type sy…
Different optical nanostructures containing both loss and gain components attract ever-increasing attention as novel advanced materials and building blocks for a variety of nanophotonic and plasmonic applications. Unique tunable optical signatures of the so-called active metamaterials support their utilizing for sensing, imaging, and signal processing on micro- and nanoscales. However, this tunability requires flexible control over the metamaterials parameters, which could be provided by involving a set of nonlinear interactions. In this paper, we propose a method of governing ultrashort pulse…
Materials that exhibit loss or gain have a complex valued refractive index $n$. Nevertheless, when considering the propagation of optical pulses, using a complex $n$ is generally inconvenient -- hence the standard choice of real-valued refractive index, i.e. $n_s = \RealPart (\sqrt{n^2})$. However, an analysis of pulse propagation based on the second order wave equation shows that use of $n_s$ results in a wave vector \emph{different} to that actually exhibited by the propagating pulse. In contrast, an alternative definition $n_c = \sqrt{\RealPart (n^2)}$, always correctly provides the wave ve…
We show that the velocity and thus the frequency of a signal pulse can be adjusted by the use of a control Airy pulse. In particular, we utilize a nonlinear Airy pulse which, via cross-phase modulation, creates an effective potential for the optical signal. Interestingly, during the interaction, the signal dispersion is suppressed. Importantly, the whole process is controllable and by using Airy pulses with different truncations leads to predetermined values of the frequency shifting. Such a functionality might be useful in wavelength division multiplexing networks.
We present an optical method to measure radio-frequency electro-optic phase modulation profiles by employing spectrum-to-time mapping realized by highly chirped optical pulses. We directly characterize temporal phase modulation profiles of up to 12.5 GHz bandwidth, with temporal resolution comparable to high-end electronic oscilloscopes. The presented optical setup is a valuable tool for direct characterization of complex temporal electro-optic phase modulation profiles, which is indispensable for practical realization of deterministic spectral-temporal reshaping of quantum light pulses.
In this paper we analyze the properties of chirped optical X-shaped pulses propagating in material media without boundaries. We show that such ("superluminal") pulses may recover their transverse and longitudinal shape after some propagation distance, while the ordinary chirped gaussian-pulses can recover their longitudinal shape only (since gaussian pulses suffer a progressive spreading during their propagation). We therefore propose the use of chirped optical X-type pulses to overcome the problems of both dispersion and diffraction during the pulse propagation.
Motivated by the growing importance of the fidelity and fidelity susceptibility (FS) in quantum critical phenomena, we use these concepts to describe the pulse propagation inside the dispersive media. It is found that there is a dramatic change in the fidelity and the FS of the pulse at a critical propagation distance inside a dispersive medium, and whether such a dramatic change for a light pulse occurs or not strongly depends on both the dispersive strength of the media and the pulse property. We study in detail about the changes of the fidelity and the FS for both a smooth and a truncated G…
Pulsed Bessel beams of light propagating in free-space experience diffraction effects that resemble those of anomalous dispersion on pulse propagation. It is then shown that a pulsed Bessel beam in a normally dispersive material can remain diffraction- and dispersion-free due to mutual cancellation of diffraction and group velocity dispersion. The size of the Bessel transversal profile for localized transmission is determined by the dispersive properties of the material at the pulse carrier frequency.
We report a modulational instability (MI) analysis of a mathematical model appropriate for ultrashort pulses in cascaded quadratic-cubic nonlinear media beyond the so-called slowly varying envelope approximation. Theoretically predicted MI properties are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation. The study shows the possibility of controlling the generation of MI and formation of solitons in a cascaded quadratic-cubic media in the few cycle regimes. We also find that stable propagation of soliton-like few-cycle pulses in the medium is subject to the fulfilment of the modulation i…
