We investigate whether the force and torque exerted by light pressure on an irregularly shaped dielectric resonator allow to detect resonant frequencies, delivering information complemental to the scattering cross section by mechanical means. The peak-to-valley ratio in the torque signal can be many times larger than in the scattering cross section, and, furthermore, depends on the structure of the resonance wave pattern. The far-field emission pattern of the associated quasi-bound states can be tested by the angular dependence of the mechanical probes at finite amplification rate. We relate the force and torque to the scattering matrix and present numerical results for an annularly shaped dielectric resonator.
In this thesis, we explore random lasing from a system comprising of amplifying microresonators. Using Monte-Carlo simulation, we investigate the diffusive propagation of light in an amplifying medium with randomly suspended resonant scatterers. The simulation shows that a more efficient and stable coherent random lasing can be achieved with monodisperse scatterers having amplification in the intra-scatterer region. To realize that experimentally, the array of amplifying microdroplets is created using a vibrating orifice droplet generator. The degree of randomness is tuned by varying the size …
Clamping loss limits the quality factor of mechanical mode in the optomechanical resonators supported with the supporting stem. Using the mechanical bound state in the continuum, we have found that the mechanical clamping loss can be avoided. The mechanical quality factor of microsphere could be achieved up to 10^8 for a specific radius of the stem, where the different coupling channels between the resonator and supporting stem are orthogonal to each other. Such mechanism is proved to be universal for different geometries and materials, thus can also be generalized to design the high quality m…
Soliton microcombs based on Kerr nonlinearity in microresonators have been a prominent miniaturized coherent light source. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the existence of Kerr solitons in an optomechanical microresonator, for which a nonlinear model is built by incorporating a single mechanical mode and multiple optical modes. Interestingly, an exotic vibrational Kerr soliton state is found, which is modulated by a self-sustained mechanical oscillation. Besides, the soliton provides extra mechanical gain through the optical spring effect, and results in phonon lasing with a red-detun…
Silicon carbide (SiC) exhibits excellent material properties attractive for broad applications. We demonstrate the first SiC optomechanical microresonators that integrate high mechanical frequency, high mechanical quality, and high optical quality into a single device. The radial-breathing mechanical mode has a mechanical frequency up to 1.69 GHz with a mechanical Q around 5500 in atmosphere, which corresponds to a mechanical f-Q product as high as 9.47x10^12 Hz. The strong optomechanical coupling allows us to efficiently excite and probe the coherent mechanical oscillation by optical waves. T…
Coherent inter-conversion between an optical and a mechanical excitation in an optomechanical resonator can be used for the storage of an optical pulse as an excitation in a mechanical oscillator. This optomechanical light storage is enabled by external writing and readout pulses at one mechanical frequency below the optical resonance. In this paper, we expand an earlier experimental study [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 133601 (2011)] on storing an optical pulse as a radial breathing mode in a silica microsphere. We show that the heterodyne beating between a readout pulse and the corresponding retriev…
We observe high optical quality factor (Q) polygonal and star coherent optical modes in a lithium niobate microdisk. In contrast to the previous polygon modes achieved by deformed microcavities at lower mechanical and optical Q, we adopted weak perturbation from a tapered fiber for the polygon mode formation. The resulting high intracavity optical power of the polygon modes triggers second harmonic generation at high efficiency. With the combined advantage of high mechanical Q cavity optomechanical oscillation was observed for the first time. Finally, we observe frequency microcomb generation …

They have been demonstrated as a diverse platform for a wide range of photonics applications, such as nonlinear optics, optomechanics, quantum optics, and information processing. Thermal behaviors induced by power buildup in resonators or environmental perturbations are ubiquitous in high-quality-factor whispering-gallery-mode resonators and have played an important role in their operation for various applications. Here in this review, we discus…
Cavity optomechanics, the study of the interplay between light and mechanical properties of matter, has triggered a wide range of groundbreaking researches from cavity quantum electrodynamics, label free single molecule detection to the creation of phonon laser. Using femtosecond laser direct writing followed by chemo-mechanical polishing, here we report an ultrahigh quality (Q~10^7) factor lithium niobate (LN) whispering gallery microresonator monolithically integrated with in-plane microelectrodes. Coherent regenerative optomechanical oscillation with an effective mechanical quality (Qm) fac…
Optical microresonators have proven powerful in a wide range of applications, including cavity quantum electrodynamics, biosensing, microfludics, and cavity optomechanics. Their performance depends critically on the exact distribution of optical energy, confined and shaped by the nanoscale device geometry. Near-field optical probes can image this distribution, but the physical probe necessarily perturbs the near field, which is particularly problematic for sensitive high quality factor resonances. We present a new approach to mapping nanophotonic modes that uses a controllably small and local …
We report on 'slow' pulsing dynamics in a silica resonator-based laser system: by nesting a high-Q rod-resonator inside an amplifying fiber cavity, we demonstrate that trains of microsecond pulses can be generated with repetition rates in the hundreds of kilohertz. We show that such pulses are produced with a period equivalent to several hundreds of laser cavity roundtrips via the interaction between the gain dynamics in the fiber cavity and the thermo-optical effects in the high-Q resonator. Experiments reveal that the pulsing properties can be controlled by adjusting the amplifying fiber cav…
We develop a stoichiometric SiN membrane-based optoelectromechanical system, in which the properties of the mechanical resonator can be dynamically controlled by the piezoelectric actuation. The mode splitting is observed in the mechanical response spectra of a phase-sensitive degenerate parametric amplifier. In addition, the quality factor Q of the membrane oscillator in this process is signicantly enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude due to the coherent amplication, reaching a Q factor of ~ 3*10^8 and a f*Q product of ~ 8*10^14 at room temperature. The thermomechanical noise squeezi…
A whispering gallery mode resonator with a cavity-made slot filled atomic vapor is demonstrated, in which the chiral symmetry is broken induced by asymmetric backscattering of counter-propagating optical waves in the WGM microcavity. The chirality of resonator modes is steered via tuning dispersion relation in the cavity-made slot. The system exhibiting a high displacement sensitivity 15.22 THz/nm could be applied to optomechanical sensing applications.
Stimulated Brillouin interaction between sound and light, known to be the strongest optical nonlinearity common to all amorphous and crystalline dielectrics, has been widely studied in fibers and bulk materials but rarely in optical microresonators. The possibility of experimentally extending this principle to excite mechanical resonances in photonic microsystems, for sensing and frequency reference applications, has remained largely unexplored. The challenge lies in the fact that microresonators inherently have large free spectral range, while the phase matching considerations for the Brillou…
We adopt the Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields to study coherences of the mechanical system in an optomechanical resonator. The high resolution Ramsey fringes are observed in the emission optical field, when two pulses separated in time are applied. We develop a theory to describe the transient optomechanical behavior underlying the Ramsey fringes. We also perform the experimental demonstration using a silica microresonator. The method is versatile and can be adopted to different types of mechanical resonators, electromechanical resonators.
The Kerr effect in optical microresonators plays an important role for integrated photonic devices and enables third harmonic generation, four-wave mixing, and the generation of microresonator-based frequency combs. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the Kerr nonlinearity can split ultra-high-Q microresonator resonances for two continuous-wave lasers. The resonance splitting is induced by self- and cross-phase modulation and counter-intuitively enables two lasers at different wavelengths to be simultaneously resonant in the same microresonator mode. We develop a pump-probe spectroscopy sc…
Whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) take advantage of strong light confinement and long photon lifetime for applications in sensing, optomechanics, microlasers and quantum optics. However, their rotational symmetry and low radiation loss impede energy exchange between WGMs and the surrounding. As a result, free-space coupling of light into and from WGMRs is very challenging. In previous schemes, resonators are intentionally deformed to break circular symmetry to enable free-space coupling of carefully aligned focused light, which comes with bulky size and alignment issue that hinder the…
We demonstrate a new type of optomechanical system employing a movable, micron-scale waveguide evanescently-coupled to a high-Q optical microresonator. Micron-scale displacements of the waveguide are observed for milliwatt(mW)-level optical input powers. Measurement of the spatial variation of the force on the waveguide indicates that it arises from a cavity-enhanced optical dipole force due to the stored optical field of the resonator. This force is used to realize an all-optical tunable filter operating with sub-mW control power. A theoretical model of the system shows the maximum achievable…
Aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) and related III-V semiconductors have excellent optoelectronic properties. They also possess strong material nonlinearity as well as high refractive indices. In view of these properties, AlGaAs is a promising candidate for integrated photonics, including both linear and nonlinear devices, passive and active devices, and associated applications. For integrated photonics low propagation loss is essential, particularly in nonlinear applications. However, achieving low-loss and high-confinement AlGaAs photonic integrated circuits poses a challenge. Here we show a…
Nanomechanical oscillators have been employed as transducers to measure force, mass and charge with high sensitivity. They are also used in opto- or electromechanical experiments with the goal of quantum control and phenomena of mechanical systems. Here, we report the realization and operation of a hybrid monolithically integrated transducer system consisting of a high-$Q$ nanomechanical oscillator with modes in the MHz regime coupled to the near-field of a high-$Q$ optical whispering-gallery-mode microresonator. The transducer system enables a sensitive resolution of the nanomechanical beam's…
Microwave frequency acousto-optic modulation is realized by exciting high overtone bulk acoustic wave resonances (HBAR resonances) in the photonic stack. These confined mechanical stress waves transmit exhibit vertically transmitting, high quality factor (Q) acoustic Fabry Perot resonances that extend into the Gigahertz domain, and offer stress-optical interaction with the optical modes of the microresonator. Although HBAR are ubiquitously used in modern communication, and often exploited in superconducting circuits, this is the first time they have been incorporated on a photonic circuit base…
