The stability of two-dimensional bright vortex solitons in a media with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities is investigated analytically and numerically. It is proved that above some critical beam powers not only one- and two-charged but also multiple-charged stable vortex solitons do exist. A vortex soliton occurs robust with respect to symmetry-breaking modulational instability in the self-defocusing regime provided that its radial profile becomes flattened, so that a self-trapped wave beam gets a pronounced surface. It is demonstrated that the dynamics of a slightly perturbed stable vortex soliton resembles an oscillation of a liquid stream having a surface tension. Using the idea of sustaining effective surface tension for spatial vortex soliton in a media with competing nonlinearities the explanation of a suppression of the modulational instability is proposed.
We study the propagation of few-cycle optical solitary waves in a nonlinear media under the combined action of quadratic, cubic and quintic nonlinearities in a large phase-mismatched second harmonic (SHG) process. Exact bright and dark soliton solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation for cascaded quadratic media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximations is reported. The analytical solutions obtained are verified through numerical simulations.
We have investigated modulation instability in metamaterials (MM) with both cubic and quintic nonlinearities, based on a model appropriate for pulse propagation in MMs with cubic-quintic nonlinearities and higher order dispersive effects. We have included loss into account in our analysis and found that loss distorts the sidebands of the MI gain spectrum. We find that the combined effect of cubic-quintic nonlinearity increases the MI gain. The role of higher order nonlinear dispersive effects on MI has been also discussed.
We report a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with pulsewidths switchable from 473 fs to 76.8 ns, where the fundamental mode-locking, noise-like pulse, nanosecond mode-locking, and dual-width mode-locking are obtained by adjusting a polarization controller. Co-existence of femto- and nano-second pulses in dual-width mode-locking is attributed to the gain balancing. Analytic modeling of the fiber laser with cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation is presented, in which the pulsewidths are calculated as functions of dispersion, saturable absorption, and self-phase modulation. The gen…
We characterize the full family of soliton solutions sitting over a background plane wave and ruled by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the regime where a quintic focusing term represents a saturation of the cubic defocusing nonlinearity. We discuss existence and properties of solitons in terms of catastrophe theory and fully characterize bistability and instabilities of the dark-antidark pairs, revealing new mechanisms of decay of antidark solitons.
Competing nonlinearities, such as the cubic (Kerr) and quintic nonlinear terms whose strengths are of opposite signs (the coefficients in front of the nonlinearities), exist in various physical media (in particular, in optical and matter-wave media). A benign competition between self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinear nonlinearities (known as cubic-quintic model) plays an important role in creating and stabilizing the self-trapping of D-dimensional localized structures, in the contexts of standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We incorporate an external periodic potential (…
We consider a system of two cubic-quintic non-linear Schrödinger equations in two dimensions, coupled by repulsive cubic terms. We analyse situations in which a probe lump of one of the modes is surrounded by a fluid of the other one and analyse their interaction. We find a realization of D'Alembert's paradox for small velocities and non-trivial drag forces for larger ones. We present numerical analysis including the search of static and traveling form-preserving solutions along with simulations of the dynamical evolution in some representative examples.
The nonlinear lattice---a new and nonlinear class of periodic potentials---was recently introduced to generate various nonlinear localized modes. Several attempts failed to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against their intrinsic critical collapse in Kerr media. Here, we provide a possibility for supporting 2D matter-wave solitons and vortices in an extended setting---the cubic and quintic model---by introducing another nonlinear lattice whose period is controllable and can be different from its cubic counterpart, to its quintic nonlinearity, therefore making a fully `nonlinear quasi-cr…
The statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal vortex light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity is considered. The present study is based on an analytic variational approximation and a full numerical solution of the 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The 3D vortex bullet can propagate with a constant velocity. Stability of the vortex bullet is established numerically and variationally. The collision between two vortex bullets moving along the angular mome…
Conditions for stable propagation of one-dimensional bright spatial solitons in media exhibiting optical nonlinearities up to the seventh-order are investigated. The results show well-defined stability regions even when all the nonlinear terms are focusing. Conditions for onset of the supercritical collapse of the optical beam are identified too. A variational approximation is used to predict dependence of the soliton propagation constant on the norm, and respective stability regions are identified using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. Analytical results obtained by means of the variational …
Approximate analytical chirped solitary pulse (chirped dissipative soliton) solutions of the one-dimensional complex cubic-quintic nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation are obtained. These solutions are stable and highly-accurate under condition of domination of a normal dispersion over a spectral dissipation. The parametric space of the solitons is three-dimensional, that makes theirs to be easily traceable within a whole range of the equation parameters. Scaling properties of the chirped dissipative solitons are highly interesting for applications in the field of high-energy ultrafast laser phy…
We systematically investigate two types of localized states - one is the optical analogue of the quantum relativistic Jackiw-Rebbi states, and the other is the trivial localized state - in interfaced binary waveguide arrays in the presence of cubic-quintic nonlinearity. By using the shooting method we can exactly calculate the profiles of these nonlinear localized states. Like in the case with Kerr nonlinearity, we demonstrate that these nonlinear localized states in the case with cubic-quintic nonlinearity also have a distinguishing feature which is completely different from all other well-kn…
We consider the statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity. The 3D light bullet can propagate with a constant velocity in any direction. Stability of the light bullet under a small perturbation is established numerically. We consider frontal collision between two light bullets with different relative velocities. At large velocities the collision is elastic with the bullets emerge after collision with practically no…
We construct families of fundamental, dipole, and tripole solitons in the fractional Schrödinger equation (FSE)\ incorporating self-focusing cubic and defocusing quintic terms modulated by factors $\cos ^{2}x$ and $\sin^{2}x$, respectively. While the fundamental solitons are similar to those in the model with the uniform nonlinearity, the multipole complexes exist only in the presence of the nonlinear lattice. The shapes and stability of all the solitons strongly depend on the Lévy index (LI)\ that determines the FSE fractionality. Stability areas are identified in the plane of LI and propagat…
We analyze a system of three two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled by linear terms and with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) nonlinearity. We consider two versions of the model: conservative and parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric. These models describe triple-core nonlinear optical waveguides, with balanced gain and losses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case. We obtain families of soliton solutions and discuss their stability. The latter study is performed using a linear stability analysis and checked with direct numerical simulations of the evolutional system of …
We study the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic-quintic combination of attractive and repulsive nonlinearities, and a trapping potential represented by a delta-function. We determine all bound states with a positive soliton profile through explicit formulas and, using bifurcation theory, we describe their behavior with respect to the propagation constant. This information is used to prove their stability by means of the rigorous theory of orbital stability of Hamiltonian systems. The presence of the trapping potential gives rise to a regime where two stable bound sta…
It is well known that the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity supports a family of stable fundamental solitons, as well as solitary vortices (alias vortex rings), which are stable for sufficiently large values of the norm. We study stationary localized modes in a symmetric linearly coupled system of two such equations, focusing on asymmetric states. The model may describe "optical bullets" in dual-core nonlinear optical waveguides (including spatiotemporal vortices that were not discussed before), or a Bose-Einstein condensate (BE…
We observe and analyze formation, decay, and subsequent regeneration of ring-shaped clusters of (2+1)-dimensional spatial solitons (filaments) in a medium with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) self-interaction and strong dissipative nonlinearity. The cluster of filaments, that remains stable over ~17.5 Rayleigh lengths, is produced by the azimuthal modulational instability from a parent ring-shaped beam with embedded vorticity l = 1. In the course of still longer propagation, the stability of the soliton cluster is lost under the action of nonlinear losses. The annular cluster is then s…
We address the properties of optical solitons that form in media with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and parity-time(PT)-symmetric complex-valued external potentials. The model describes the propagation of solitons in nonlinear optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We study the existence, stability, and robustness of fundamental, dipole, and multipole stationary solutions in this PT-symmetric system. The corresponding eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental, dipole, tripole, and quadrupole solitons are presented. We show that the eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental …
The influence of an externally applied magnetic field upon classic cubic quintic dissipative solitons is investigated using both exact simulations and a Lagrangian technique. The basic approach is to use a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field and to consider two important geometries, namely the Voigt and the Faraday effects. A layered structure is selected for the Voigt case with the principal aim being to demonstrate non-reciprocal behaviour for various classes of spatial solitons that are known to exist as solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau cubic-quintic envelope equation under dissi…
In this paper, we propose a liquid core suspended photonic crystal fiber (LCSPCF) as a potential waveguide structure for nonlinear applications. We emphasize the dramatic improvement of the nonlinear properties of the PCF through the infiltration of liquid and highlight the effect of suspension in the further enhancement of nonlinearity. To demonstrate the capability of LCSPCF, we perform a modulation instability (MI) study and illustrate the MI enhancement in the LCSPCF against conventional PCF. As the LCSPCF possesses high nonlinearity, it is important to consider the effects of higher-order…
It is known that optical-lattice (OL) potentials can stabilize solitons and solitary vortices against the critical collapse, generated by the cubic attractive nonlinearity in the 2D geometry. We demonstrate OLs can also stabilize various species of fundamental and vortical solitons against the super-critical collapse, driven by the double-attractive cubic-quintic nonlinearity (however, solitons remain unstable in the case of the pure quintic nonlinearity). Two types of OLs are considered, producing similar results: the 2D Kronig-Penney "checkerboard", and the sinusoidal potential. Soliton fami…
We present eight types of spatial optical solitons which are possible in a model of a planar waveguide that includes a dual-channel trapping structure and competing (cubic-quintic) nonlinearity. Among the families of trapped beams are symmetric and antisymmetric solitons of "broad" and "narrow" types, composite states, built as combinations of broad and narrow beams with identical or opposite signs ("unipolar" and "bipolar" states, respectively), and "single-sided" broad and narrow beams trapped, essentially, in a single channel. The stability of the families is investigated via eigenvalues of…
We address the existence and stability of vortex-soliton (VS) solutions of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities and the Lévy index (fractionality) taking values 1 \leqα\leq2. Families of ring-shaped VSs with vorticities s = 1,2, and 3 are constructed in a numerical form. Unlike the usual two-dimensional NLSE (which corresponds to α = 2), in the fractional model VSs exist above a finite threshold value of the total power,P. Stability of the VS solutions is investigated for small perturbations governed by the linearized equation, and co…
It has been recently discovered that stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) solitons against the critical collapse in media with the cubic nonlinearity by means of nonlinear lattices (NLs) is a challenging problem. We address the 1D version of the problem, i.e., the nonlinear-Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the quintic or cubic-quintic (CQ) terms, the coefficient in front of which is periodically modulated in space. The models may be realized in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Stability diagrams for the solitons are produced by means of numerical methods and analytical approximati…
We introduce one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) models of parity-time ($% \mathcal{PT}$) -symmetric couplers with the mutually balanced linear gain and loss applied to the two cores, and cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity acting in each one. The 2D and 1D models may be realized in dual-core optical waveguides, in the spatiotemporal and spatial domains, respectively. Stationary solutions for $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric solitons in these systems reduce to their counterparts in the usual coupler. The most essential problem is the stability of the solitons, which become unstable against symmetry break…
We report results of a systematic numerical analysis of interactions between three-dimensional (3D) fundamental solitons, performed in the framework of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity, combining the self-focusing and defocusing terms. The 3D NLSE with the CQ terms may be realized in terms of spatiotemporal propagation of light in nonlinear optical media, and in Bose-Einstein condensates, provided that losses may be neglected. The first part of the work addresses interactions between identical fundamental solitons, with phase shift $% φ$ betwee…
We present exact rational solution for a modified nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation that takes into account quintic nonlinearity and nonlinear dispersion corrections to the cubic nonlinearity, which could be used to describe rogue wave in nonlinear fibers. We find the rogue wave with these higher order effects has identical shape with the well-known one in nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation. However, the quintic nonlinear term and nonlinear dispersion effect affect the velocity of rogue wave, and the evolution of its phase.
The two most commonly used models for passively modelocked lasers with fast saturable absorbers are the Haus modelocking equation (HME) and the cubic-quintic modelocking equation (CQME). The HME corresponds to a special limit of the CQME in which only a cubic nonlinearity in the fast saturable absorber is kept in the model. Here, we use singular perturbation theory to demonstrate that the CQME has a stable high-energy solution for an arbitrarily small but non-zero quintic contribution to the fast saturable absorber. As a consequence, we find that the CQME predicts the existence of stable model…
In a numerical investigation, we demonstrate the existence and curious evolution of vortices in a ladder-type three-level nonlinear atomic vapor with linear, cubic, and quintic susceptibilities considered simultaneously with the dressing effect. We find that the number of beads and topological charge of the incident beam, as well as its size, greatly affect the formation and evolution of vortices. To determine the number of induced vortices and the corresponding rotation direction, we give common rules associated with the initial conditions coming from various incident beams.
We study propagation and on-off switching of two colliding soliton sequences in the presence of second-order dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, linear loss, cubic gain, and quintic loss. Employing a Lotka-Volterra (LV) model for dynamics of soliton amplitudes along with simulations with two perturbed coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations, we show that stable long-distance propagation can be achieved for a wide range of the gain-loss coefficients, including values that are outside of the perturbative regime. Furthermore, we demonstrate robust on-off and off-on switching of one of the sequen…
We introduce a model for spatiotemporal modelocking in multimode fiber lasers, which is based on the (3+1)-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (cGLE) with conservative and dissipative nonlinearities and a 2-dimensional transverse trapping potential. Systematic numerical analysis reveals a variety of stable nonlinear modes, including stable fundamental solitons and breathers, as well as solitary vortices with winding number $n=1$, while vortices with $n=2$ are unstable, splitting into persistently rotating bound states of two unitary vortices. A characteristic feature of …
This article offers a review of results for solitons in 2D and 3D models of nonlinear dissipative media. The existence of such solitons requires to maintain two balances: between nonlinear self-focusing and linear diffraction and/or dispersion, and between loss and gain. Due to these conditions, dissipative solitons (DSs) exist not in families, but as isolated solutions. The main issue is stability of 2D and 3D DSs, especially vortical ones. First, stable 2D DSs are presented in the framework of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity, which combines linea…
We present a numerical investigation of the propagation dynamics of a truncated Airy pulse in a highly dispersive and nonlinear medium by employing the split-step Fourier transform method and look, in particular, into the effects of fourth order dispersion (FOD) and cubic-quintic-septic nonlinearity on pulse evolution. Presence of FOD cancels the Airy pulse self-acceleration along with eclipsing the oscillatory tail during propagation in the linear regime. Further, we observe soliton shedding at low input pulse power in the presence of cubic and quintic nonlinearity and negative FOD. The emerg…
We demonstrate that the cubic gain applied in a localized region, which is embedded into a bulk waveguide with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity and uniform linear losses, supports stable spatial solitons in the absence of the quintic dissipation. The system, featuring the bistability between the solitons and zero state (which are separated by a family of unstable solitons), may be used as a nonlinear amplifier for optical and plasmonic solitons, which, on the contrary to previously known settings, does not require gain saturation. The results are obtained in an analytical form and corroborated b…
We address the existence and stability of localized modes in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schroedinger equation (FNSE) with the focusing cubic or focusing-defocusing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and a confining harmonic-oscillator (HO) potential. Approximate analytical solutions are obtained in the form of Hermite-Gauss modes. The linear stability analysis and direct simulations reveal that, under the action of the cubic self-focusing, the single-peak ground state and dipole mode are stabilized by the HO potential at values of the Levy index (the fractionality degree) alpha = 1 and …
