The physical nature of numerous of the nonlinear phenomena in optics is explained by inequality of forward and reversed optical transitions, that corresponds to a principle of time invariance violation in electromagnetic interactions. The direct and indirect experimental proofs of such inequality and direction of the further researches are discussed.
During the last decade, new unusual physical phenomena in studies on the optics of dielectric mesoscale particles of arbitrary three dimensional shape and gratings with Mie size parameter q ~ 10 have been discovered. The report provides a brief overview of these phenomena from optics to terahertz, plasmonic and acoustic . We also discuss different particle configurations (isolated or interacting, Janus) and draw a brief overview of the possible applications of such mesoscale structures, in connection with field enhancement, nanoparticles manipulation and super resolution imaging. The presence …
In this paper, the crossing symmetry of the photons, from spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) phenomena in nonlinear crystals, is used for the development of a new geometric optics based on quantum kinematic correlations. On this basis, a new interpretation of the recent results on the two photon entangled experiment is obtained. A new field of applications is suggested.
Novel nonlinear optical phenomena - photonic flame effect (PFE) and stimulated globular scattering (SGS) are discussed.PFE consisted in the appearance of the few seconds duration emission in blue-green spectral range under 20 ns ruby laser pulse excitation and simultaneous excitation of several spatially separated synthetic opal crystalls situated on the Cu plate. SGS was observed both in forward and backward directions. Spectral and energetical SGS characteristics were measured.
Using sum rules and a new dipole-free sum-over-states expression, we calculate the fundamental limits of the dispersion of the real and imaginary parts of all electronic nonlinear-optical susceptibilities. As such, these general results can be used to study any nonlinear optical phenomena at any wavelength, making it possible to push both applications and our understanding of such processes to the limits. These results reveal the ultimate constraints imposed by nature on our ability to control and use light.
Interference effects in quantum transitions, giving rise to amplification without inversion, optical transparency and to enhancements in nonlinear optical frequency conversions are considered. Review of the relevant early theoretical and experimental results is given. The role of relaxation processes, spontaneous cascade of polarizations, local field effects, Doppler-broadening, as well as specific features of the interference in the spectral continuum are discussed.
Recent years have seen increased interest to plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear optical effects, yet there remains an uncertainty of what are the limits of this enhancement. We present a simple and physically transparent theory of plasmonic enhancement of third order nonlinear optical processes achieved in plasmonic structures and show that while huge enhancement of effective nonlinear index can be attained, the most relevant figure of merit, the of phase shift per one absorption length remains very low. This means that while on one hand nonlinear plasmonic materials are not well suitable for …
As quantum optical phenomena are based on Maxwell's equations, and it is becoming important to understand quantum optical phenomena at short distances, so it is important to analyze quantum optics using short distance corrected Maxwell's equation. Maxwell's action can be obtained from quantum electrodynamics using the framework of effective field theory, and so the leading order short distance corrections to Maxwell's action can also be obtained from the derivative expansion of the same effective field theory. Such short distance corrections will be universal for all quantum optical systems, a…
The experimental proofs of strong time invariance violation in optics are discussed. Time noninvariance is the only real physical base for explanation the origin of the most phenomena in nonlinear optics. The experimental study of forward and reversed transitions in oriented in uniform electric field molecules is proposed.
We consider some nonlinear phenomena in metamaterials with negative refractive index properties. Our consideration includes a survey of previously known results as well as identification of the phenomena that are important for applications of this new field. We focus on optical behavior of thin films as well as multi-wave interactions.
Topological defects play a key role in a variety of physical systems, ranging from high-energy to solid state physics. They yield fascinating emergent phenomena and serve as a bridge between the microspic and macroscopic world. A skyrmion is a unique type of topological defect, showing great promise for applications in the fields of magnetic storage and spintronics. Here, we discover and observe optical skyrmion lattices that can be easily created and controlled, while illustrating their robustness to imperfections. Optical skyrmions are experimentally demonstrated by interfering surface plasm…
Dispersive shock waves are fascinating phenomena occurring when nonlinearity overwhelms linear effects, such as dispersion and diffraction. Many features of shock waves are still under investigation, as the interplay with noninstantaneity in temporal pulses transmission and nonlocality in spatial beams propagation. Despite the rich and vast literature on nonlinear waves in optical Kerr media, spatial dispersive shock waves in nonlocal materials deserve further attention for their unconventional properties. Indeed, they have been investigated in colloidal matter, chemical physics and biophotoni…
The interplay of such cornerstones of modern nonlinear fiber optics as a nonlinearity, stochasticity and polarization leads to variety of the noise induced instabilities including polarization attraction and escape phenomena harnessing of which is a key to unlocking the fiber optic systems specifications required in high resolution spectroscopy, metrology, biomedicine and telecommunications. Here, by using direct stochastic modeling, the mapping of interplay of the Raman scattering-based nonlinearity, the random birefringence of a fiber, and the pump-to-signal intensity noise transfer has been…
This is a part of an overview of my early studies on nonlinear spin-phonon dynamics in solid state optical-wavelength phonon lasers (phasers) started in 1984. The main goal of this work is a short description and a qualitative analysis of experimental data on low-frequency nonlinear resonances revealed in a nonautonomous ruby phaser. Under phaser pumping modulation near these resonances, an unusual kind of self-organized motions in the ruby spin-phonon system was observed by me in 1984 for the first time. The original technique of optical-wavelength microwave-frequency acoustic stimulated emis…
The damped driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) has been used to understand a range of physical phenomena in diverse systems. Studying this equation in the context of optical hyper-parametric oscillators in anomalous-dispersion dissipative cavities, where NLSE is usually referred to as the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), we are led to a new, reduced nonlinear oscillator model which uncovers the essence of the spontaneous creation of sharply peaked pulses in optical resonators. We identify attracting solutions for this model which correspond to stable cavity solitons and Turing patterns…
