By using a method, previously established to calculate electromagnetic fields, we compute the force of light upon a metallic particle. This procedure is based on both Maxwell's Stress Tensor and the Couple Dipole Method. With these tools, we study the force when the particle is over a flat dielectric surface. The multiple interaction of light between the particle and the surface is fully taken into account. The wave illuminating the particle is either evanescent or propagating depending an whether or not total internal reflection takes place. We analyze the behaviour of this force on either a small or a large particle in terms of the wavelength. A remarkable result obtained for evanescent field illumination, is that the force on a small silver particle can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the wavelength. This behaviour also varies as the particle becomes larger.
We investigate numerically Fano resonances excited in periodic arrays of dielectric, metallic and left-handed cylinders. Of particular interest are Fano resonances excited in the linear array of cylin- ders. We analyze spatial distribution and symmetry of electromagnetic field and discuss the relation between observed Fano resonances and frequency spectra of two-dimensional arrays of cylinders.
There are various formulations of energy--momentum tensors for an electromagnetic field in a linear dielectric. The total energy--momentum tensor, comprised of electromagnetic and material components, must be unique. We discuss the construction of the total energy--momentum tensor and the associated conservation laws.
We present a theory to compute the force due to light upon a particle on a dielectric plane by the Coupled Dipole Method (CDM). We show that, with this procedure, two equivalent ways of analysis are possible, both based on Maxwell's stress tensor. The interest in using this method is that the nature and size or shape of the object, can be arbitrary. Even more, the presence of a substrate can be incorporated. To validate our theory, we present an analytical expression of the force due to the light acting on a particle either in presence, or not, of a surface. The plane wave illuminating the sph…
The long-standing resolution of the Abraham--Minkowski electromagnetic momentum controversy is predicated on a decomposition of the total momentum of a closed continuum electrodynamic system into separate field and matter components. Using a microscopic model of a simple linear dielectric, we derive Lagrangian equations of motion for the electric dipoles and show that the dielectric can be treated as a collection of stationary simple harmonic oscillators that are driven by the electric field and produce a polarization field in response. The macroscopic energy and momentum are defined in terms …
The dielectric susceptibility of a wide class of dielectric materials follows, over extended frequency ranges, a fractional power-law frequency dependence that is called the "universal" response. The electromagnetic fields in such dielectric media are described by fractional differential equations with time derivatives of non-integer order. An exact solution of the fractional equations for a magnetic field is derived. The electromagnetic fields in the dielectric materials demonstrate fractional damping. The typical features of "universal" electromagnetic waves in dielectric are common to a wid…
In this Letter we theoretically study a novel approach for soliton-induced supercontinuum generation based on the application of metallic dielectric-coated hollow waveguides. Low loss of such waveguides permits the use of smaller diameters with enhanced dispersion control and enables the generation of two-octave-broad spectra with unprecedentedly high spectral peak power densities up to five orders of magnitude larger than in standard PCFs with high coherence. We also predict that high-power supercontinua in the vacuum ultraviolet can be generated in such waveguides.
A novel electromagnetic energy squeezing mechanism is proposed based on the special properties of permeability-near-zero metamaterials. Nearly no energy stream can enter a conventional dielectric region positioned inside a permeability-near-zero material. When a source is surrounded by a dielectric split ring (encloser with a gap opened), the electromagnetic energy generated by the source is forced to propagate through the gap. When the gap is narrow, the energy stream density becomes very large and makes the magnetic field enhanced drastically in the gap. The narrow gap can be long and bended…
We consider dielectric cavities whose radiation space is restricted by two parallel metallic planes. The TM solutions of the Maxwell equations of the system are equivalent to the solutions of periodical arrays of dielectric cavities. The system readily allows to achieve bound states in the continuum (BICs) of any type including topological BICs as dependent on position and orientation of the cavities relative to the planes. That extremely facilitates experimental studies in comparison to infinite arrays of the cavities. We show the effect of merging of topologically protected BICs that pushes …
Focusing through a tilted dielectric interface is studied, and an explicit expression for the electric field in the focal region is found. In the case of small tilt angles, one obtains a focal shift, and only a simple aberration term remains.
Generalization of the theory of interaction of the electromagnetic P-waves with a metal film on a case of the film concluded between two dielectric environments is carried out.
Compact and low-loss photonic crystal waveguides are critical in integrated terahertz (THz) applications. Compared with pure metal or dielectric photonic crystal waveguides, hybrid (metal-dielectric) integrated waveguides provide a simple way to further improve the field confinement and the propagation loss. In this work, we investigate a hybrid waveguide consisting of metallic photonic crystals and dielectric films in 0.1-1.0 THz. Photonic crystal waveguides based on metal pillar arrays (MPAs) support two resonance modes including the fundamental and high-order transverse magnetic (TM) modes …
In a frame of quasi-crystal approximation the dispersion equations are obtained for the wave vector of a coherent electromagnetic wave propagating in a media which contains a random set of parallel dielectric cylinders with possible overlapping. The results are compared with that for the case when a regularity at the cylinder placement exists.
Generalization of the theory of interaction of electromagnetic S-wave with a metal film on a case of the film concluded between two dielectric environments is developed.
The intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation from metallic and dielectric gratings (silicon, silica) is compared in a frequency-domain simulation. The numerical model is discussed and verified with the Frank-Tamm formula for Cherenkov radiation. For 30 keV electrons, rectangular dielectric gratings are less efficient than their metallic counterpart, by an order of magnitude for silicon, and two orders of magnitude for silica. For all gratings studied, radiation intensity oscillates with grating tooth height due to electromagnetic resonances in the grating. 3D and 2D numerical models are compared.
When the effects of dispersion are included, neither the Abraham nor the Minkowski expression for electromagnetic momentum in a dielectric medium gives the correct recoil momentum for absorbers or emitters of radiation. The total momentum density associated with a field in a dielectric medium has three contributions: (i) the Abraham momentum density of the field, (ii) the momentum density associated with the Abraham force, and (iii) a momentum density arising from the dispersive part of the response of the medium to the field, the latter having a form evidently first derived by D.F. Nelson [Ph…
Focusing and resonance properties of two-dimensional small-size hemielliptic lenses made of different materials are studied numerically in order to estimate the influence of internal reflections on the radiation characteristics of dielectric lens antennas. Accuracy of in-house made algorithms based on combination of geometrical and physical optics and FDTD in the analysis of optical and modal effects in the behavior of such lenses is tested by comparison with the exact solution obtained using the Muller boundary integral equations. The range of applicability for the approaches is discussed.
We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in stratified anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials using the integral equation method (IEM). Based on the superposition principle, we use Hertz vector formulations of radiated fields to study the interaction of wave with matter. We derive in a new way the dispersion relation, Snell's law and reflection/transmission coefficients by self-consistent analyses. Moreover, we find two new forms of the generalized extinction theorem. Applying the IEM, we investigate the wave propagation through a slab and disclose the underlying physics whic…
The vast majority of resonant systems show a red-shift for the resonance frequency when a perturbation, e.g. losses, are introduced to the system. In contrast, here we report for the first time the experimental demonstration of both red- and anomalous blue-shifting of whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) using dielectric and metallic substrates. The maximum blue-shift is more than three times as large as the expected red-shift, proving that the anomalous blue-shift is more than a peculiar curiosity. The experiments are performed in the terahertz (THz) frequency range with coherent continuous-wave s…
In this Letter, we investigate the group delay of optical pulses through multilayer dielectric mirrors (MDM) combined with gravitational wave (GW). We find that the delay increases linearly with MDM length for the transmitted wave packet, whereas the Hartman effect disappears. Our study provides insight into the nature of both quantum tunnelling and GW.
The problem of assigning a momentum to an electromagnetic wave packet propagating inside an insulator has become known under the name of the Abraham-Minkowski controversy. In the present paper we re-examine the question, first through a power expansion in the polarizability of the medium and assuming the simplest and most natural choice for the force exerted on a dielectric material by an electromagnetic field. It is shown that the Abraham expression is highly favoured. We then show the complete generality of these results.
A configuration to excite the Uller-Zenneck surface electromagnetic waves at the planar interfaces of homogeneous and isotropic dielectric materials is proposed and theoretically analyzed. The Uller-Zenneck waves are surface waves that can exist at the planar interface of two dissimilar dielectric materials of which at least one is a lossy dielectric material. In this work, a slab of a lossy dielectric material was taken with lossless dielectric materials on both sides. A canonical boundary-value problem was set up and solved to find the possible Uller-Zenneck waves and waveguide modes. The Ul…
A qubit lattice algorithm (QLA) is developed for Maxwell equations in a two-dimensional Cartesian geometry. In particular, the initial value problem of electromagnetic pulse scattering off a localized 2D dielectric object is considered. A matrix formulation of the Maxwell equations, using the Riemann-Silberstein-Weber vectors, forms a basis for the QLA and a possible unitary representation. The electromagnetic fields are discretized using a 16-qubit representation at each grid point. The discretized QLA equations reproduce Maxwell equations to second order in an appropriate expansion parameter…
We show that dielectric spheres can be cloaked by a shell of amorphously arranged metallic nanoparticles. The shell represents an artificial medium with tunable effective properties that can be adjusted such that the scattered signals of shell and sphere almost cancel each other. We provide an analytical model for the cloak design and prove numerically that the cloak operates as desired. We show that more than 70% of the scattered signal of the sphere can be suppressed at the design wavelength. Advantages and disadvantages of such a cloak when compared to other implementations are disclosed.
We present arguments in favor of the proposition that the momentum of light inside a transparent dielectric medium is the arithmetic average of the Minkowski and Abraham momenta. Using the Lorentz transformation of the fields (and of the coordinates) from a stationary to a moving reference frame, we show the consistent transformation of electromagnetic energy and momentum between the two frames. We also examine the momentum of static (i.e., time-independent) electromagnetic fields, and show that the close connection that exists between the Poynting vector and the momentum density extends all t…
Electromagnetic wave is reflected and refracted at interfaces, satisfying Fresnel-Snell law which is required by conservations of energy and momentum. If the incident angle is lower than the critical angle, we can use this Fresnel-Snell law, but the Fresnel-Snell law is modified in the case of existence of dissipation ($\tilde{n} = n + iκ, κ> 0$) or in the condition of total internal reflection. In the cases, we have to extend the angle of refraction from real number to complex number ($θ\rightarrow \tildeθ = θ+ iψ, ψ\neq 0$). In this paper, by using complex-angle approach, we analyse the beha…
We explore the propagation and transformation of electromagnetic waves through spatially homogeneous yet smoothly time-dependent media within the framework of classical electrodynamics. By modelling the smooth transition, occurring during a finite period τ, as a phenomenologically realistic and sigmoidal change of the dielectric permittivity, an analytically exact solution to Maxwell's equations is derived for the electric displacement in terms of hypergeometric functions. Using this solution, we show the possibility of amplification and attenuation of waves and associate this with the decreas…
We investigate electromagnetic propagation in uniaxial dielectrics with a transversely varying orientation of the optic axis, the latter staying orthogonal everywhere to the propagation direction. In such a geometry, the field experiences no refractive index gradients, yet it acquires a transversely-modulated Pancharatnam-Berry phase, that is, a geometric phase originating from a spin-orbit interaction. We show that the periodic evolution of the geometric phase versus propagation gives rise to a longitudinally-invariant effective potential. In certain configurations, this geometric phase can p…
The momentum- and frequency-dependent T-matrix operator for the scattering of electromagnetic waves by a dielectric/conducting and para- or diamagnetic sphere is derived as a Mie-type series, and presented in a compact form emphasizing various symmetry properties, notably the unitarity identity. This result extends to magnetic properties one previously obtained for purely dielectric contrasts by other authors. Several situations useful to spatially-dispersive effective-medium approximations to one-body order are examined. Partial summation of the Mie series is achieved in the case of elastic s…
The Lorenz--Mie formulation of electromagnetic scattering by a homogeneous, isotropic, dielectric-magnetic sphere was extended to incorporate topologically insulating surface states characterized by a surface admittance $γ$. Closed-form expressions were derived for the expansion coefficients of the scattered field phasors in terms of those of the incident field phasors. These expansion coefficients were used to obtain analytical expressions for the total scattering, extinction, forward scattering, and backscattering efficiencies of the sphere. Resonances exist for relatively low values of $γ$,…
The electromagnetic field is canonically quantized in the presence of a linear, dispersive and dissipative medium that is in uniform motion. Specifically we calculate the change in the normal modes of the coupled matter-field system and find a Hamiltonian that contains negative energy normal modes. We interpret these modes as the origin of phenomena such as quantum friction, and find that a detector initially in its ground state and coupled to the electromagnetic field in the vicinity of, or within a uniformly moving medium has a non-zero probability of excitation at T=0K.
Analytical solution for optical trapping force on a spherical dielectric particle for an arbitrary positioned focused beam is presented in a generalized Lorenz-Mie and vectorial diffraction theory. In this case the exact electromagnetic field is considered in the focal region. A double tweezers setup was employed to perform ultra sensitive force spectroscopy and observe the forces, demonstrating the selectively couple of the transverse electric (TE), transverse magnetic (TM) modes by means of the beam polarization and positioning, and to observe correspondent morphology-dependent resonances (M…
The total momentum of a thermodynamically closed system is unique, as is the total energy. Nevertheless, there is continuing confusion concerning the correct form of the momentum and the energy-momentum tensor for an electromagnetic field interacting with a linear dielectric medium. Here we investigate the energy and momentum in a closed system composed of a propagating electromagnetic field and a negligibly reflecting dielectric. The Gordon momentum is easily identified as the total momentum by the fact that it is, by virtue of being invariant in time, conserved. We construct continuity equat…
We report the design of highly efficient optical antennas employing a judicious synthesis of metallic and dielectric materials. In the proposed scheme, a pair of metallic coupled nanoparticles permits large enhancements in both excitation strength and radiative decay rates, while a high refractive index dielectric microsphere is employed to efficiently collect light without spoiling the emitter quantum efficiency. Our simulations indicate potential fluorescence rate enhancements of 3 orders of magnitude over the entire optical frequency range.
In this paper, we present a quantum theory for field propagation through a three dimensional dielectric when the third order dispersion and the attenuation coefficients are included. A unique Lagrangian is defined leading to the correct equation of motion and the classical Hamiltonian. It is assumed that the dielectric has a combination of inhomogeneity, dispersion and nonlinearity. By employing constraint quantization approach the final Hamiltonian is expanded in terms of properly defined annihilation and creation operators. We obtain the quantum fields (quantum photon-polaritons fields) for …
We demonstrate that the electromagnetic fields scattered by particles made of different materials can be equalized. Emphasize is placed first in metallic nanoparticles that host localized surface plasmons and it is shown that their electromagnetic fields can be identically reproduced with dielectric particles. We derive the explicit formulas relating the different constitutive parameters that yield identical electromagnetic responses. This method provides the dielectric permittivities of spherical particles that reproduce the strong near electric field intensities observed around metallic part…
Engineering of intensity and direction of radiation from a single quantum emitter by means of structuring of their environment at the nanoscale is at the cornerstone of modern nanophotonics. Recently discovered systems exhibiting spin--orbit coupling of light are of particular interest in this context. In this Letter, we have demonstrated that asymmetrical excitation of a high-index subwavelength dielectric nanoparticle by a point dipole source located in a notch at its surface results in formation of a chiral near field, which is similar to that of a circularly polarized dipole or quadrupole.…
Extraordinary features of optical parametric amplification of Stokes electromagnetic waves are investigated, which originate from three-wave mixing of two ordinary electromagnetic and one backward phonon wave with negative group velocity. A similarity with the counterpart in the negative-index plasmonic metamaterials and differences with those utilizing contra-propagating ordinary electromagnetic waves as well as electromagnetic and acoustic phonon waves are shown. They stem from backwardness of optical phonons with negative dispersion. Nonlinear-optical photonic devices with the properties si…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
The Abraham--Minkowski momentum controversy is the outwardly visible symptom of an inconsistency in the use of the energy-momentum tensor in the case of a plane quasimonochromatic field in a simple linear dielectric. We show that the Gordon form of the electromagnetic momentum is conserved in a thermodynamically closed system. We regard conservation of the components of the four-momentum in a thermodynamically closed system as a fundamental property of the energy--momentum tensor. Then the first row and column of the energy--momentum tensor is populated by the electromagnetic energy density an…
We present a significantly different reflection process from an optically thin flat metallic or dielectric layer and propose a strikingly simple method to form approximately unipolar half-cycle optical pulses via reflection of a single-cycle optical pulse. Unipolar pulses in reflection arise due to specifics of effectively one-dimensional pulse propagation. Namely, we show that in considered system the field emitted by a flat medium layer is proportional to the velocity of oscillating medium charges instead of their acceleration as it is usually the case. When the single-cycle pulse interacts …
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in all-dielectric metamaterials with a high quality factor provides an effective route to enhance light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. In particular, the active control applied to it enables great degree of freedom for spatial light modulation and thus promises functional device applications with high flexible tunability. Here we load graphene into all-dielectric metamaterials and realize the remarkably high modulation depth in the transmission amplitude of the EIT resonance with the manipulation of graphene conductivity, via shifti…
Molecular optomechanics stems from the description of Raman scattering in the presence of an optical resonator using a cavity optomechanics formalism. We extend the molecular optomechanics formalism to the case of hybrid dielectric-plasmonic resonators, with multiple optical resonances and with both free-space and waveguide addressing. We demonstrate how the Raman enhancement is the product of a pump enhancement and a modified LDOS, that simply depend on the complex response functions of the hybrid system. The Fano lineshapes that result from hybridization of a broadband and narrowband modes a…
Spectral analysis is performed on the Born equation, a strongly singular integral equation modeling the interactions between electromagnetic waves and arbitrarily shaped dielectric scatterers. Compact and Hilbert--Schmidt operator polynomials are constructed from the Green operator of electromagnetic scattering on scatterers with smooth boundaries. As a consequence, it is shown that the strongly singular Born equation has a discrete spectrum, and that the spectral series $ \sum_λ|λ|^2|1+2λ|^4$ is convergent, counting multiplicities of the eigenvalues $ λ$. This reveals a shape-independent opti…
Resonant electromagnetic modes are analyzed inside a dielectric cavity of equilateral triangular cross section and refractive index n, surrounded by a uniform medium of refractive index n'. The field confinement is determined only under the requirements needed to maintain total internal reflection of the internal electromagnetic fields, matched to exponentially decaying evanescent waves outside the cavity. Two-dimensional electromagnetics is considered, with no dependence on the coordinate perpendicular to the cross section; hence, independent transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (…
Using the Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) method, we compute the electromagnetic field distribution in and around dielectric media of various shapes and optical properties. With the aid of the constitutive relations, we proceed to compute the bound charge and bound current densities, then employ the Lorentz law of force to determine the distribution of force-density within the regions of interest. For a few simple cases where analytical solutions exist, these solutions are found to be in complete agreement with our numerical results. We also analyze the distribution of fields and forces i…
We show that dielectric or even perfectly conducting cylinders can be cloaked by a uniform or a layered dielectric cladding, without the need of any exotic or magnetic material parameters. In particular, we start by presenting a simple analytical concept that can accurately describe the cloaking effect obtained with conical silver plates in the visible spectrum. The modeled structure has been originally presented in [S. A. Tretyakov, P. Alitalo, O. Luukkonen, C. R. Simovski, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 103, p. 103905, 2009], where its operation as a cloak in the optical frequencies was studied only…
In a previous work, Optics Communications 284 (2011) 2460--2465, we considered a dielectric medium with an anti-reflection coating and a spatially uniform index of refraction illuminated at normal incidence by a quasimonochromatic field. Using the continuity equations for the electromagnetic energy density and the Gordon momentum density, we constructed a traceless, symmetric energy--momentum tensor for the closed system. In this work, we relax the condition of a uniform index of refraction and consider a dielectric medium with a spatially varying index of refraction that is independent of tim…
Almost a hundred years ago, two different expressions were proposed for the energy--momentum tensor of an electromagnetic wave in a dielectric. Minkowski's tensor predicted an increase in the linear momentum of the wave on entering a dielectric medium, whereas Abraham's tensor predicted its decrease. Theoretical arguments were advanced in favour of both sides, and experiments proved incapable of distinguishing between the two. Yet more forms were proposed, each with their advocates who considered the form that they were proposing to be the one true tensor. This paper reviews the debate and its…
For an optically thick metallic film, the transmission for both s- and p-polarized waves is extremely low. If the metallic film is coated on both sides with a finite dielectric layer, light transmission for $p$-polarized waves can be enhanced considerably. This enhancement is not related to surface plasmon-polaritions. Instead, it is due to the interplay between Fabry-Perot interference in the coated dielectric layer and the existence of the Brewster angle at the dielectric/metallic interface. It is shown that the coated metallic films can act as excellent polarizers at infrared wavelengths.
In this paper, we utilize the deformation transformation optics (DTO) method to design electromagnetic beam bender, which can change the direction of electromagnetic wave propagation as desire. According to DTO, the transformed material parameters can be expressed by deformation tensor of the spatial transformation. For a beam bender, since the three principal stretches at each point induced by the spatial transformation are independent to each other, there are many possibilities to simplify the transformed material parameters of the bender by adjusting the stretches independently. With the DT…
Photonic components based on structured metallic elements show great potential for device applications where field enhancement and confinement of the radiation on a subwavelength scale is required. In this paper we report a detailed study of a prototypical metallo-dielectric photonic structure, where features well known in the world of dielectric photonic crystals, like band gaps and defect modes, are exported to the metallic counterpart, with interesting applications to infrared science and technology, as for instance in quantum well infrared photodetectors, narrow-band spectral filters, and …
A strategy is proposed to realize robust transport in time reversal invariant photonic system. Using numerical simulation and microwave experiment, we demonstrate that a chiral guided mode in the channel of a three-dimensional dielectric woodpile photonic crystal is immune to the scattering of a square patch of metal or dielectric inserted to block the channel. The chirality based robust transport can be realized in nonmagnetic dielectric materials without any external field.
After more than a century of debate, there remains continuing discomfort over what is the correct expression for the electromagnetic momentum in a dielectric medium. This is the so-called the Minkowski-Abraham controversy. We show that there is indeed a consistent picture for the electromagnetic momentum associated with waves in a dielectric, but one must start with the fields E and B, not D and H as fundamental objects. The momentum flow is described by a tensor T^EB, where the expression is identical to that in vacuum. The Minkowski tensor and the Abraham force result from a fractured decomp…
