The collisional electron-impact line widths of the 3s-3p transitions in Li-like ions from B III to Ne VIII are calculated with the convergent close-coupling (CCC) method from the atomic collision theory. The elastic and inelastic contributions to the line broadening and their Z-scaling are discussed in detail, and comparisons with recent experimental and theoretical results are also presented. It is found that similar to our previous study of line broadening in Be-like ions, the difference between experimental and CCC results monotonically increases with the spectroscopic charge of an ion.
We demonstrated a polarization-resolved high resolution spectroscopy of a visible emission line of highly charged tungsten ions (λ0 = 668.899 nm, Shinohara et al Phys. Scr. 90 125402) for the large helical device (LHD) plasma, where the tungsten ions were introduced by a pellet injection. Its spectral profile shows broadening and polarization dependence, which are attributed to the Doppler and Zeeman effects, respectively. The tungsten ion temperature was evaluated for the first time from the broadening of visible the emission line, with its emission location determined by the Abel inversion o…
We demonstrate precision measurement and control of inhomogeneous broadening in a multi-ion clock consisting of three $^{176}$Lu$^+$ ions. Microwave spectroscopy between hyperfine states in the $^3D_1$ level is used to characterise differential systematic shifts between ions, most notably those associated with the electric quadrupole moment. By appropriate alignment of the magnetic field, we demonstrate suppression of these effects to the $\sim 10^{-17}$ level relative to the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{}^3D_1$ optical transition frequency. Correlation spectroscopy on the optical transition demonstr…

Doppler broadening plays an important role in laser rovibrational spectroscopy of trapped deuterated molecular hydrogen ions (HD$^+$), even at the millikelvin temperatures achieved through sympathetic cooling by laser-cooled beryllium ions. Recently, Biesheuvel \textit{et al.} \cite{Biesheuvel2016} presented a theoretical lineshape model for such transitions which not only considers linestrengths and Doppler broadening, but also the finite sample size and population redistribution by blackbody radiation, which are important in view of the long storage and probe times achievable in ion traps. H…
We found 12 unknown visible emission lines from the core plasma of large helical device with highly charged tungsten ions accumulated. The observation was made with our home-built echelle spectrometer, which covers the wavelength range of 450-715 nm with a wavelength resolution of<0.05 nm for two lines of sight; one line passes both the core and edge plasmas and the other passes only the edge plasma. These emission lines are attributed to highly charged tungsten ions because (1) they were observed only after a tungsten pellet was injected into the plasma, (2) they were observed only from the c…
The cross section for electron-impact single ionisation of W14+ ions has been calculated by using two different approaches, i.e., the subconfiguration averaged distorted-wave (SCADW) method and the more involved level-to-level distorted-wave (LLDW) method. Both methods are found to yield very similar results except for the 4d->5d excitation-autoionisation (EA) channels that straddles the ionisation threshold. Accordingly, a hybrid theoretical cross section where the $4d\to 5d$ EA SCADW cross section is replaced by its LLDW counterpart is in good agreement with the experimental result from an e…
Experimental and theoretical total cross sections for single and double ionization of the open-$4d$-shell ions Xe$^{12+}$, Xe$^{13+}$, and Xe$^{14+}$ by electron impact
The thermal two-photon level broadening of the excited energy levels in the hydrogen and H-like helium is evaluated via the imaginary part of thermal two-loop self-energy correction for bound electron. All the derivations are presented in the framework of rigorous quantum electrodynamic theory at finite temperatures and are applicable for the H-like ions. On this basis, we found a contribution to the level broadening induced by the blackbody radiation which is fundamentally different from the usual line broadening caused by the stimulated two-photon decay and the Raman scattering of thermal ph…
Absolute cross sections for electron-impact single ionisation (EISI) of multiply charged tungsten ions (W$^{q+}$) with charge states in the range $ 11 \leq q \leq 18$ in the electron-ion collision energy ranges from below the respective ionisation thresholds up to 1000~eV were measured employing the electron-ion crossed-beams method. In order to extend the results to higher energies, cross section calculations were performed using the subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave (SCADW) method for electron-ion collision energies up to 150~keV. From the combined experimental and scaled theoretical …
Optical spectroscopy in the gas phase is a key tool to elucidate the structure of atoms and molecules and of their interaction with external fields. The line resolution is usually limited by a combination of first-order Doppler broadening due to particle thermal motion and of a short transit time through the excitation beam. For trapped particles, suitable laser cooling techniques can lead to strong confinement (Lamb-Dicke regime, LDR) and thus to optical spectroscopy free of these effects. For non-laser coolable spectroscopy ions, this has so far only been achieved when trapping one or two at…
Spectral lines emitted by plasmas provide information about the thermodynamic conditions, the degree of randomness or the interactions prevailing in the medium. Collisions by plasma electrons penetrating the extent of bound-electron wavefunctions is important at high density, where short-range interactions become dominant. Such collisions are usually not taken into account properly in the standard lineshape theory, assuming long-range dipole approximation. The formalism of penetrating collisions for hydrogen relies on the introduction of a family of integrals calculated using a recursion relat…
We report on the fragmentation dynamics of triply charged, diatomic, molecular ions of NO and CO. Dissociative fragmentation after multiple ionization of NO and CO is studied under the impact of 200 keV proton beam using recoil-ion momentum spectrometer. Kinetic Energy Release distributions (KERDs) for various fragmentation channels were obtained. We have also calculated the potential energy curves (PECs) for ground and several excited states of NO^{3+} and CO^{3+} molecular ion. The obtained KERDs are discussed in the background of the calculated PECs as well as the simple Coulomb excitation …
In a recent paper, El-Maaref et al. [J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Transfer 2019, 224:147] have reported atomic data for Zn-like W~XLV. Their results are mainly for energy levels, radiative rates, collision strengths ($Ω$) for electron impact excitation, and cross sections for ionization, but for only for a few levels/transitions, and in a very limited range of energy. For the calculations of $Ω$ they have adopted the DARC code. In this comment, through our independent calculations, we demonstrate that their results for $Ω$ are highly underestimated by over two orders of magnitude, and hence ar…
Comparison of quantum mechanical and classical trajectory calculations of cross sections for ion-atom impact ionization of negative - and positive -ions for heavy ion fusion applications
The expression of the electron broadening operator including the effect of penetrating collisions, i.e. for which the incoming electron enters the extent of bound-electron wavefunctions, is rather complicated, even for hydrogen. It involves integrals of special functions, which evaluation deserves scrutiny. We present a simple approximate form of the electron collision operator for hydrogen including penetration effects, both in direct and interference terms. The new expression is accurate and easy to compute. In the Penetration Standard Theory, the collision operator is convergent whatever th…
A general formulation is developed to demonstrate that atomic autoionizing (AI) resonances are broadened and shifted significantly due to plasma effects across bound-free continua. The theoretical and computational method presented accounts for broadening mechanisms: electron collisional, ion microfields (Stark), thermal Doppler, core excitations, and free-free transitions. {\it Extrinsic} plasma broadening redistributes and shifts AI resonance strengths while broadly preserving naturally {\it intrinsic} asymmetries of resonance profiles. Integrated oscillator strengths are conserved as resona…
Absolute rate coefficients for photorecombination and electron-impact ionization of magnesium-like iron ions from measurements at a heavy-ion storage ring
We have compiled a set of electron-impact multiple ionization (EIMI) cross sections for astrophysically relevant ions. EIMI can have a significant effect on the ionization balance of non-equilibrium plasmas. For example, it can be important if there is a rapid change in the electron temperature or if there is a non-thermal electron energy distribution, such as a kappa distribution. Cross sections for EIMI are needed in order to account for these processes in plasma modeling and for spectroscopic interpretation. Here, we describe our comparison of proposed semiempirical formulae to the availabl…
Plasma models built on extensive atomic data are essential to interpreting the observed cosmic spectra. H-like Lyman series and He-like triplets observable in the X-ray band are powerful diagnostic lines to measure the physical properties of various types of astrophysical plasmas. Electron-impact excitation is a fundamental atomic process for the formation of H-like and He-like key diagnostic lines. Electron-impact excitation data adopted by the widely used plasma codes (AtomDB, CHIANTI, and SPEX) do not necessarily agree with each other. Here we present a systematic calculation of electron-im…
In this work we study the single ionization of hydrogen and helium by the impact of a punctual Coulomb projectile. To interpretate the cross section we introduce a series of Padé approximant. The nodes of the denominator of the Padé approximant give rise to poles in the charge complex plane. These poles move with the projectile velocity following a certain pattern. We find the positions of the poles of the Continuum Distorted Wave theory and an ensamble of experimental results. It was found that the ionization cross section may have oscillations in terms of the incident charge for a given impa…
Recently, El-Maaref {\it et al}\, [J. Phys. B 52(2019) 065202] have reported results for energy levels, radiative rates and collision strengths ($Ω$) for some transitions of Kr-like W~XXXIX. For the calculations of these parameters they have adopted several codes, including GRASP, DARC and FAC. For energy levels they have shown discrepancies of up to 1.64~Ryd between the GRASP and FAC calculations, whereas for $Ω$ the differences between the DARC and FAC results are over an order of magnitude for a few transitions. In addition, for several transitions there is an anomaly in the behaviour of $Ω…
We study the electron-impact induced ionization of O$_{2}$ from threshold to 120 eV using the electron spectroscopy method. Our approach is simple in concept and embodies the ion source with a collision chamber and a mass spectrometer with a quadruple filter as a selector for the product ions. The combination of these two devices makes it possible to unequivocally collect all energetic fragment ions formed in ionization and dissociative processes and to detect them with known efficiency. The ion source allows to vary and tune the electron-impact ionization energy and the target-gas pressure. W…

本文指出 Wang 和 Jiang 报告的五种 Al-like 离子的有效碰撞强度($Υ$)数据因电子能量范围有限而在高温下错误下降,经 FAC 计算验证后认为其 $Υ$ 值不可靠,不应被采用。
Emission lines from highly-excited states (n >= 5) of H- and He-like ions have been detected in astrophysical sources and fusion plasmas. For such excited states, R-matrix or distorted wave calculations for electron-impact excitation are very limited, due to the large size of the atomic basis set needed to describe them. Calculations for n >= 6 are also not generally available. We study the behaviour of the electron-impact excitation collision strengths and effective collision strengths for the most important transitions used to model electron collision dominated astrophysical plasmas, solar, …
Emission and absorption features from C-like ions serve as temperature and density diagnostics of astrophysical plasmas. $R$-matrix electron-impact excitation data sets for C-like ions in the literature merely cover a few ions, and often only for the ground configuration. Our goal is to obtain level-resolved effective collision strength over a wide temperature range for C-like ions from \ion{N}{II} to \ion{Kr}{XXXI} (i.e., N$^{+}$ to Kr$^{30+}$) with a systematic set of $R$-matrix calculations. We also aim to assess their accuracy. For each ion, we included a total of 590 fine-structure levels…
Spectral lines from N-like ions can be used to measure the temperature and density of various types of astrophysical plasmas. The atomic databases of astrophysical plasma modelling codes still have room for improvement in their electron-impact excitation data sets for N-like ions, especially $R$-matrix data. This is particularly relevant for future observatories (e.g. Arcus) which will host high-resolution spectrometers. We aim to obtain level-resolved effective collision strengths for all transitions up to $nl=5d$ over a wide range of temperatures for N-like ions from O II to Zn XXIV (i.e., O…
Some exact analytical results and a semi-empirical formula for single electron ionization induced by ultrarelativistic heavy ions
