We report on the fragmentation dynamics of triply charged, diatomic, molecular ions of NO and CO. Dissociative fragmentation after multiple ionization of NO and CO is studied under the impact of 200 keV proton beam using recoil-ion momentum spectrometer. Kinetic Energy Release distributions (KERDs) for various fragmentation channels were obtained. We have also calculated the potential energy curves (PECs) for ground and several excited states of NO^{3+} and CO^{3+} molecular ion. The obtained KERDs are discussed in the background of the calculated PECs as well as the simple Coulomb excitation model. Coulomb breakup of the unstable precursor molecular ion shows a clear preference for the N^{2+} + O^+ (and C^{2+} + O^+) fragmentation channel.
Nuclear-spin-dependent (NSD) parity violating (PV) effects can be strongly enhanced in diatomic molecules containing heavy atoms. Future measurements are anticipated to provide nuclear anapole moments and strength constants for PV nuclear forces. In light molecules, the NSD electroweak electron-nucleus interaction may also be detected. Here we calculate NSD PV effects for molecular ions. Our calculations are motivated by rapid developments in trapping techniques for such systems at low temperatures.
In present paper we develop an analytic theory for the harmonic generation of symmetric diatomic molecular ions beyond two-level model, emphasizing the influence of charge-resonance (CR) states those are strongly coupled to electromagnetic fields for large internuclear distance. With taking into account the continuum states that is ignored in the two-level model and become important for intense laser case, our model is capable to produce spectrum for the whole range of harmonic orders consisting of a molecular plateau due to the CR transition and an atomic-like plateau for a long-wavelength ex…
A model based on the strong-field and Born-Oppenheimer approximations qualitatively describes the distribution over vibrational states formed in a diatomic molecular ion following ionization of the neutral molecule by intense laser pulses. Good agreement is found with a recent experiment [X. Urbain et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 163004 (2004)]. In particular, the observed deviation from a Franck-Condon-like distribution is reproduced. Additionally, we demonstrate control of the vibrational distribution by a variation of the peak intensity or a change of frequency of the laser pulse.
The fragmentation of diatomic molecules under a stochastic force is investigated both classically and quantum mechanically, focussing on their dissociation probabilities. It is found that the quantum system is more robust than the classical one in the limit of a large number of kicks. The opposite behavior emerges for a small number of kicks. Quantum and classical dissociation probabilities do not coincide for any parameter combinations of the force. This can be attributed to a scaling property in the classical system which is broken quantum mechanically.
The direct laser cooling of neutral diatomic molecules in molecular beams suggests that trapped molecular ions can also be laser cooled. The long storage time and spatial localization of trapped molecular ions provides the opportunity for multi-step cooling strategies, but also requires a careful consideration of rare molecular transitions. We briefly summarize the requirements that a diatomic molecule must meet for laser cooling, and we identify a few potential molecular ion candidates. We then perform a detailed computational study of the candidates BH+ and AlH+, including improved ab initio…
We study the fragmentation of very large dimers into two singly charged ions caused by absorption of a photon. In this process a photo electron emitted from one atom of the dimer has certain chances to hit the other atom knocking out one of its electrons. This results in the production of two singly charged ions and the consequent Coulomb explosion of the residual doubly charged system. We develop a theory of this process and apply it to calculate the fragmentation of $^4$He$_2$, $^7$Li - $^4$He and $^6$Li - $^4$He dimers. Our results for the helium dimer are in good agreement with available e…
We studied the recollision dynamics between the electrons and D$_2^+$ ions following the tunneling ionization of D$_2$ molecules in an intense short pulse laser field. The returning electron collisionally excites the D$_2^+$ ion to excited electronic states from there D$_2^+$ can dissociate or be further ionized by the laser field, resulting in D$^+$ + D or D$^+$ + D$^+$, respectively. We modeled the fragmentation dynamics and calculated the resulting kinetic energy spectrum of D$^+$ to compare with recent experiments. Since the recollision time is locked to the tunneling ionization time which…
We theoretically characterize interactions, energetics, and chemical reaction paths in ionic two-body and three-body systems of alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms in the context of modern experiments with cold hybrid ion-atom mixtures. Using \textit{ab initio} techniques of quantum chemistry such as the coupled-cluster method, we calculate ground-state electronic properties of all diatomic $AB^+$ and most of triatomic $A_2B^+$ molecular ions consisting of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Yb atoms. Different geometries and wave-function symmetries of the ground state are found fo…
Fragmentation of highly charged molecular ions or clusters consisting of more than two atoms can proceed in an onestep synchronous manner where all bonds break simultaneously or sequentially by emitting one ion after the other. We separated these decay channels for the fragmentation of CO23+ ions by measuring the momenta of the ionic fragments. We show that the total energy deposited in the molecular ion is a control parameter which switches between three distinct fragmentation pathways: the sequential fragmentation in which the emission of an O+ ion leaves a rotating CO2+ ion behind that frag…
Trapped diatomic molecular ions could prove to be a sensitive probe for a permanent electron electric dipole moment (eEDM). We propose to use a ground or metastable $^3Δ_1$ level, due to its high polarizability and large EDM enhancement factor. Ions allow for simple trapping and long interrogation times, but require a time-varying electric bias field in order to probe the eEDM. We discuss experimental design as well as challenges in performing a precision spectroscopic measurement in rapidly time-varying electric fields.
A counterintuitive scheme to produce ultracold hydrogen via fragmentation of laser cooled diatomic hydrides is presented where the final atomic H temperature is inversely proportional to the mass of the molecular parent. In addition, the critical density for formation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) at a fixed temperature is reduced by a factor ratio hydrogen mass: parent mass raised to power 3/2 over directly cooled hydrogen atoms. The narrow Feshbach resonances between a singlet S atom and hydrogen are well suited to a tiny center of mass energy release necessary during fragmentation. Wi…
The direct photodissociation of trapped $^{85}$Rb$_2^+$ (rubidium) molecular ions by the cooling light for the $^{85}$Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) is studied, both experimentally and theoretically. Vibrationally excited Rb$_{2}^{+}$ ions are created by photoionization of Rb$_{2}$ molecules formed photoassociatively in the Rb MOT and are trapped in a modified spherical Paul trap. The decay rate of the trapped Rb$_{2}^{+}$ ion signal in the presence of the MOT cooling light is measured and agreement with our calculated rates for molecular ion photodissociation is observed. The photodissociation…
We present models for a heteronuclear diatomic molecular ion in a linear Paul trap in a rigid-rotor approximation, one purely classical, the other where the center-of-mass motion is treated classically while rotational motion is quantized. We study the rotational dynamics and their influence on the motion of the center-of-mass, in the presence of the coupling between the permanent dipole moment of the ion and the trapping electric field. We show that the presence of the permanent dipole moment affects the trajectory of the ion, and that it departs from the Mathieu equation solution found for a…
We study the electron-impact induced ionization of O$_{2}$ from threshold to 120 eV using the electron spectroscopy method. Our approach is simple in concept and embodies the ion source with a collision chamber and a mass spectrometer with a quadruple filter as a selector for the product ions. The combination of these two devices makes it possible to unequivocally collect all energetic fragment ions formed in ionization and dissociative processes and to detect them with known efficiency. The ion source allows to vary and tune the electron-impact ionization energy and the target-gas pressure. W…
We study theoretically the fragmentation of the helium dimer, $^4$He$_2$, into singly charged ions in collisions with relativistic highly-charged projectiles. We discuss the main mechanisms driving this process with the focus on the fragmentation caused by direct ionization of both atomic sites of the dimer in a single collision with the projectile. This direct mechanism dominates the He$_2$ $\to $ He$^+$ + He$^+$ breakup events with the kinetic energies of the emerging ionic fragments below $4$--$5$ eV. We explore the energy and angular distributions of the He$^+$ ions produced in collisions …
A time-dependent approach for the kinetic energy release (KER) spectrum is developed for a fragmentation of a diatomic molecule after an electronic decay process, e.g. Auger process. It allows one to simulate the time-resolved spectra and provides more insight into the molecular dynamics than the time-independent approach. Detailed analysis of the time-resolved emitted electron and KER spectra sheds light on the interrelation between wave packet dynamics and spectra.
Relying on the quantization rule of Raab and Friedrich [Phys. Rev. A (2009) in press], we derive simple and accurate formulae for the number of rotational states supported by a weakly bound vibrational level of a diatomic molecular ion. We also provide analytic estimates of the rotational constants of any such levels up to threshold for dissociation and obtain a criterion for determining whether a given weakly bound vibrational level is rotationless. The results depend solely on the long-range part of the molecular potential.
We propose to use diatomic molecular ions to search for strongly enhanced effects of variation of fundamental constants. The relative enhancement occurs in transitions between nearly degenerate levels of different nature. Since the trapping techniques for molecular ions have already been developed, the molecules HBr$^+$, HI$^+$, Br$^+_2$, I$^+_2$, IBr$^+$, ICl$^+$, and IF$^+$ are very promising candidates for such future studies.
We present the development and performance of a newly built recoil ion momentum spectrometer to study the fragmentation dynamics of ionized molecules. The spectrometer is based on the two-stage Wiley-McLaren geometry and satisfies both time and velocity focusing conditions. An electrostatic lens has been introduced in the drift region to achieve velocity imaging and higher angular collection. The spectrometer is equipped with a 2D position-sensitive detector with multi-hit coincidence electronics. Ionic fragments with kinetic energy ~ 8 eV can be detected with 4π collection. The overall perfor…
The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled sympathetically to translational temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The ro-vibrational degrees of freedom, however, are expected to be largely unaffected during translational cooling. We have previously proposed schemes for cooling of the internal degrees of freedom of such translationally cold but internally hot heteronuclear diatomic ions in the simplest case of ^1-Sigma electronic ground state molecules. Here we present a significant simplification of these sc…
Advanced techniques for manipulation of internal states, standard in atomic physics, are demonstrated for a charged molecular species for the first time. We address individual hyperfine states of ro-vibrational levels of a diatomic ion by optical excitation of individual hyperfine transitions, and achieve controlled transfer of population into a selected hyperfine state. We use molecular hydrogen ions (HD^{+}) as a model system and employ a novel frequency-comb-based, continuous-wave 5 \mum laser spectrometer. The achieved spectral resolution is the highest obtained so far in the optical domai…
The description of threshold fragmentation under long range repulsive forces is presented. The dominant energy dependence near threshold is isolated by decomposing the cross section into a product of a back ground part and a barrier penetration probability resulting from the repulsive Coulomb interaction. This tunneling probability contains the dominant energy variation and it can be calculated analytically based on the same principles as Wannier's description for threshold ionization under attractive forces. Good agreement is found with the available experimental cross sections on detachment …
Fully numerical mesh solutions of 2D quantum equations of Schroedinger and Hartree-Fock type allow us to work with wavefunctions which possess a very flexible geometry. This flexibility is especially important for calculations of atoms and molecules in strong external fields where neither the external field nor the internal interactions can be considered as a perturbation. The applications of the present approach include calculations of atoms and diatomic molecules in strong static electric and magnetic fields. For the latter we have carried out Hartree-Fock calculations for He, Li, C and seve…
The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled sympathetically to temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The distribution of internal rovibrational states, however, gets in thermal equilibrium with the typically much higher temperature of the environment within tens of seconds. We consider a concept for rotational cooling of such internally hot, but translationally cold heteronuclear diatomic molecular ions. The scheme relies on a combination of optical pumping from a few specific rotational levels into a ``dark …
We review the study of dissociative recombination and ro-vibrational excitation of diatomic and small polyatomic molecular ions initiating complex organic molecules formation. In particular, we show how Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT) and R-matrix methods are used to compute cross sections and rate coefficients for cations in well defined ro-vibrational levels of the ground electronic state, from sub-meV up to few eV collision energies. The most recent MQDT results are compared with either other theoretical data, or with measured data obtained in storage-ring experiments.
The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, lea…
Molecular fragmentation leading to the formation of negatively and positively charged hydrogen ions in 7-keV OH$^+$ + Ar collisions is investigated experimentally. The most striking finding is that negative and positive hydrogen ions are emitted with very similar angular dependences. Also, the kinetic energy distribution of the H$^+$ fragment shows strong similarities with that of the ejected H$^-$ ion. The kinematics of the emitted H core is found to be essentially driven by its scattering on the atomic target. However, in addition to this binary-encounter process, dissociative electronic exc…
By using Bohmian trajectory method, we investigate the dynamic interference in diatomic molecular high-order harmonic generation progress. It is demonstrated that the main characteristics of the molecular harmonic spectrum can be well reproduced by only two Bohmain trajectories which are located respectively at the two ions. This is because these two localized trajectories can receive and store the whole collision information coming from all of the other recollision trajectories. Therefore, the amplitudes and frequencies of these two trajectories represent the intensity and frequency distribut…
We study the fragmentation of He$_2$ dimers into He$^+$ ions by relativistic highly-charged projectiles. It is demonstrated that the interaction between an ultrafast projectile with an extremely extended object -- the helium dimer -- possesses interesting features which are absent in collisions with "normal" molecules. It is also shown that such projectiles, due to their enormous interaction range, can accurately probe the ground state of the dimer and even be used for a precise determination of its binding energy.

We demonstrate that the formation of negative hydrogen ions (H-) occurs in a wide class of atomic and molecular collisions. In our experiments, H- emission from hydroxyl cations and acetone molecules was observed in keV-energy collisions. We show that hydride (H-) anions are formed via direct collisional fragmentation of molecules, followed by electron grabbing by fast hydrogen fragments. Such general mechanism in hydrogen-containing molecules may significantly influence reaction networks in planetary atmospheres and astrophysical media and new reaction pathways may have to be added in radioly…
A photofragmentation study of gas-phase indole (C$_8$H$_7$N) upon single-photon ionization at a photon energy of 420 eV is presented. Indole was primarily inner-shell ionized at its nitrogen and carbon $1s$ orbitals. Electrons and ions were measured in coincidence by means of velocity map imaging. The angular relationship between ionic fragments is discussed along with the possibility to use the angle-resolved coincidence detection to perform experiments on molecules that are strongly oriented in their recoil-frame. The coincident measurement of electrons and ions revealed fragmentation-pathwa…
We have measured the stopping powers and straggling of fast, highly ionized atoms passing through thin bilayer targets made up of metals and insulators. We were surprised to find that the energy losses as well as the straggling depend on the ordering of the target and have small but significantly different values on bilayer reversal. We ascribe this newly found difference in energy loss to the surface energy loss field effect due to the differing surface wake fields as the beam exits the target in the two cases. This finding is validated with experiments using several different projectiles, ve…
Anion and cation emission following water dissociation was studied for 6.6-keV $^{16}$O$^{+}$ + H$_{2}$O collisions. Absolute cross sections for the emission of all positively and negatively charged fragments, differential in both energy and observation angle, were measured. The fragments formed in hard, binary collisions appearing in peaks were distinguishable from those created in soft collisions with many-body dynamics that result in a broad energy spectrum. A striking feature is that anions and cations are emitted with similar energy and angular distributions, with a nearly constant ratio …
In cold core of dark molecular clouds, where the UV radiation from external sources is strongly attenuated, cosmic rays can induce chemical reactions on the surface of ice-covered grains promoting the ejection of the processed material to the gas phase. We report the positive and negative secondary ion emission from pure CH3CN, C2H3CN and i-C3H7CN ices due to the bombardment of heavy ions (252Cf fission fragments), simulating the incidence of cosmic rays onto icy surfaces. The secondary ions emitted from each sample were analysed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), using Plasma Desor…

In molecular photofragmentation processes by soft X-rays, a number of ionic fragments can be produced, each having a different abundance and correlation with the emitted electron kinetic energy. For investigating these fragmentation processes, electron-ion and electron-ion-ion coincidence experiments, in which the kinetic energy of electrons are analyzed using an electrostatic analyzer while the mass of the ions is analyzed using a pulsed electric field, are very powerful. For such measurements, however, the contribution of random coincidences is substantial and affects the data in a non-trivi…
Charge transfer in collisions of Na_n^+ cluster ions with Cs atoms is investigated theoretically in the microscopic framework of non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics. The competing reaction channels and related processes affecting the charge transfer (electronic excitations, fragmentation, temperature) are described. Absolute charge transfer cross sections for Na_n^+(2.7 keV) + Cs --> Na_n + Cs^+ have been calculated in the size range 4 <= n <= 11 reproducing the size dependence of the experimental cross sections. The energy dependence of the cross section is predicted for n=4,7,9. An exot…
