Steady-state and dynamics of the self-phase-locked (3ω==> 2ω, ω) subharmonic optical parametric oscillator are analyzed in the pump-and-signal resonant configuration, using an approximate analytical model and a full propagation model. The upper branch solutions are found always stable, regardless of the degree of pump enhancement. The domain of existence of stationary states is found to critically depend on the phase-mismatch of the competing second-harmonic process.
A model of the steady-state operating, self-pumped singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (SPSRO) has been developed. The characteristics of quasi three-level laser gain medium pumped longitudinally have been taken into account. The characteristics of standing wave cavity, reabsorption losses, focusing Gaussian beams of the pump laser, fundamental laser and signal wave have been considered in the analyses. Furthermore, The power characteristics of threshold and efficiency have been analyzed, employing a Yb3+-doped periodically poled lithium niobate co-doped with MgO (Yb3+:MgO:PPLN) as t…
This paper presents a detailed numerical study of the effect of focusing on the conversion efficiency of low-loss singly-resonant parametric oscillators with collinear focusing of pump and signal. Results are given for the maximal pump depletion and for pump power levels required for various amounts of depletion, as functions of pump and signal confocal parameters, for kI/kP=0.33 and 0.50. It is found that the ratio of pump depletion to maximal depletion as a function of the ratio of pump power to threshold power agrees with the plane-wave prediction to within 5%, for a wide range of focusing …
We report a continuous-wave, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) at 3.3 μm by using a MgO:PPLN crystal as the gain medium and a Yb-fiber laser at 1.064 μm as the pump source. At 25-W pump power, the SRO generated 7.4 and 0.2-W powers at 1.57 and 3.3 μm, respectively. The 3.3-μm SRO has a single-longitudinal-mode output with a ~5-MHz linewidth. We observed thermally induced optical bistability in the SRO due to the slight absorption of the 3.3-μm wave in the MgO:PPLN crystal. Pump depletion was clamped at 60% while spectral hole burning was observed in the depleted pump.
We demonstrate the operation of an ultra low repetition rate, high peak power, picosecond diode pumped Nd:YVO4 passively mode locked laser oscillator. Repetition rates even below 1 MHz were achieved with the use of a new design multiple-pass cavity and a semiconductor saturable absorber. Long term stable operation at 1.2 MHz, pulse duration of 16.3 ps and average output power of 470 mW corresponding to 24 KW peak power pulses is reported. This is, to our knowledge, the lowest repetition rate high peak power pulses ever generated directly from a picosecond laser resonator without cavity dumping…
Similariton-like pulses are found to be formed in synchronously pumped singly resonant optical parametric oscillators (OPO) by numerical simulation. The nonlinear coupled-wave equations can be reduced to inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The signal pulses with parabola-like temporal intensity profile and linear chirp are presented in OPO. The similariton-like pulses in OPO have many practical and potential applications.
Lasers based on Cr$^{2+}$-doped II-VI material, often known as the Ti:Sapphire of the mid-infrared, can directly provide few-cycle pulses with super-octave-spanning spectra, and serve as efficient drivers for generating broadband mid-infrared radiation. It is expected that the wider adoption of this technology benefits from more compact and cost-effective embodiments. Here, we report the first directly diode-pumped, Kerr-lens mode-locked Cr$^{2+}$-doped II-VI oscillator pumped by a single InP diode, providing average powers of over 500 mW and pulse durations of 45 fs - shorter than six optical…
We present an experimental technique allowing to stabilize the frequency of the non resonant wave in a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) down to the kHz level, much below the pump frequency noise level. By comparing the frequency of the non resonant wave with a reference cavity, the pump frequency noise is imposed to the frequency of the resonant wave, and is thus subtracted from the frequency of the non resonant wave. This permits the non resonant wave obtained from such a SRO to be simultaneously powerful and frequency stable, which is usually impossible to obtain when the …
A wavelength spacing tunable, multiwavelength Q-switched mode-locked (QML) fiber laser in an erbium-doped fiber cavity based on graphene oxide deposited on tapered fiber is proposed by choosing the diameter and length of the taper, graphene oxide thickness and cavity dispersion, in which the wavelength spacing could be tuned by pump power. The evolutions of temporal and spectral with different pump strengths are investigated. Results show that the tunability of the multiwavelength laser can be interpreted by the bound states of QML laser resulting from a mutual interaction of dispersion, nonli…
We demonstrate a wavelength spacing tunable, multiwavelength Q-switched mode-locked fiber laser (QML) based on a fiber taper deposited with graphene oxide. The operation of the laser can be understood in terms of the formation of bunches of QMLs which possess small temporal intervals, and multiwavelength spectra are generated due to the Fourier transformation. We find that the temporal spacing of the QMLs is highly sensitive to the pump power, and as a result, the wavelength spacing can be easily tuned by varying the pump power. Our experimental laser provides a wavelength spacing tuning range…
We theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate inhibition of linear absorption for phase and group velocity mismatched second and third harmonic generation in strongly absorbing materials, GaAs in particular, at frequencies above the absorption edge. A 100-fs pump pulse tuned to 1300nm generates 650nm and 435nm second and third harmonic pulses that propagate across a 450 micron-thick GaAs substrate without being absorbed. We attribute this to a phase-locking mechanism that causes the pump to trap the harmonics and to impress them with its dispersive properties.
In this paper, we report on a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source. The pump focusing conditions allow non-collinear phasematching, which resulted in a 230 nm (190 cm$^{-1}$) spectral bandwidth. Calculations indicate that such phasematching schemes may be used to further broaden OPO spectral bandwidths.
Spatio-temporal dynamics of singly resonant optical parametric oscillators with external seeding displays hexagonal, roll and honeycomb patterns, optical turbulence, rogue waves and cavity solitons. We derive appropriate mean-field equations with a sinc$^2$ nonlinearity and demonstrate that off-resonance seeding is necessary and responsible for the formation of complex spatial structures via self-organization. We compare this model with those derived close to the threshold of signal generation and find that back-conversion of signal and idler photons is responsible for multiple regions of spat…
Modeling and design of singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator with an intracavity idler absorber for enhanced conversion efficiency for the signal
We report a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (SRO), which is pumped by a semiconductor laser system and operates in the mid-infrared region (2.9 to 3.6 μm). Fast tuning of the mid-infrared output wavelength by more than 200 nm is demonstrated by scanning the pump laser wavelength through only 1.25 nm, without any need to adjust the SRO settings. The exceptionally large tuning range is obtained by choosing a pump wavelength (780 nm) that corresponds to a turning point of the group velocity mismatch between the phase-matched signal and idler waves of the SRO.
We demonstrate that the implementation of phase-locked loop forbidding multimode operation of a long Brillouin resonator also leads to a dramatic reduction of the optical phase noise of the pump itself. In the case of a continuous Er,Yb:glass laser, a reduction by more than 90 dB at 100 Hz of the carrier is observed. This yields an optical linewidth estimated narrower than 2 Hz for the pump laser. The method being independent of the laser wavelength, it can be applied to almost any laser.
Cross-phase modulation instability (XPMI) is experimentally observed in a fiber ring cavity with net normal dispersion and mode-locked by long fiber taper. The taper is deposited with reduced graphene oxide, which can decrease the threshold of XPMI due to the enhanced nonlinearity realized by 8 mm evanescent field interaction length and strong mode confinement. Experimental results indicate that the phase matching conditions in two polarization directions are different, and sidebands with different intensities are generated. This phase matching condition can be satisfied even the polarization …
We simulate and discuss novel spatio-temporal propagation effects that relate specifically to pulsed, phase-mismatched second harmonic generation in a negative index material having finite length. Using a generic Drude model for the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, the fundamental and second harmonic frequencies are tuned so that the respective indices of refraction are negative for the pump and positive for the second harmonic signal. A phase-locking mechanism causes part of the second harmonic signal generated at the entry surface to become trapped and dragged along by the …
We describe the generation of stable mode-locked pulse trains from on-chip normal dispersion microresonators. The excitation of hyper-parametric oscillation is facilitated by the local dispersion disruptions induced by mode interactions. The system is then driven from hyper-parametric oscillation to the mode-locked state with over 200 nm spectral width by controlled pump power and detuning. With the continuous-wave driven nonlinearity, the pulses sit on a pedestal, akin to a cavity soliton. We identify the importance of pump detuning and wavelength-dependent quality factors in stabilizing and …
We predict and experimentally observe the enhancement by three orders of magnitude of phase mismatched second and third harmonic generation in a GaAs cavity at 650nm and 433nm, respectively, well above the absorption edge. Phase locking between the pump and the harmonics changes the effective dispersion of the medium and inhibits absorption. Despite hostile conditions the harmonics become localized inside the cavity leading to relatively large conversion efficiencies. Field localization plays a pivotal role and ushers in a new class of semiconductor-based devices in the visible and UV ranges.
We present an experimental technique enabling mechanical-noise free, cavity-enhanced frequency measurements of an atomic transition and its hyperfine structure. We employ the 532nm frequency doubled output from a Nd:YAG laser and an iodine vapour cell. The cell is placed in a traveling-wave Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with counter-propagating pump and probe beams. The FPI is locked using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. Mechanical noise is rejected by differencing pump and probe signals. In addition, this differenced error signal gives a sensitive measure of differential non-lineari…
We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Increasing the pump power of the fiber laser, we show that temporally a stable, uniform DSR pulse train could be transformed into a period-doubling state, exhibiting two sets of pulse parameters between the adjacent cavity roundtrip. It is found that DSR pulses in the period-doubling state could maintain the typical feature of DSR pulse: fixed pulse peak power and linear variation in pulse width…
We propose and theoretically investigate a dispersion-engineered Si3N4 microring resonator, based on a cross-section containing a partially-etched trench, that supports phase-locked, two-color soliton microcomb states. These soliton states consist of a single circulating intracavity pulse with a modulated envelope that sits on a continuous wave background. Such temporal waveforms produce a frequency comb whose spectrum is spread over two widely-spaced spectral windows, each exhibiting a squared hyperbolic secant envelope, with the two windows phase-locked to each other via Cherenkov radiation.…
We present a 100 MHz repetition rate Yb-fiber-laser-pumped synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) delivering tunable frequency combs covering almost the entire visible spectral range. By intracavity doubling both the signal and idler combs and using collinear residual pump light, nearly continuous tuning over the range of 420-700 nm is achieved with only small gaps near the OPO degeneracy condition. Output powers range from 10 mW to 200 mW, depending on wavelength, with pulse durations below 150 fs without external compression. Frequency locking of all three collinearly out…
The plane-wave dynamics of 3*omega => (2*omega, omega) subharmonic optical parametric oscillators containing a second harmonic generator of the idler wave omega is analyzed analytically by using the meanfield approximation and numerically by taking into account the field propagation inside the media. The resonant Chi(2):Chi(2) cascaded second-order nonlinearities induce a mutual injection-locking of the signal and idler waves that leads to coherent self phase-locking of the pump and subharmonic waves, freezing the phase diffusion noise. In case of signal-and-idler resonant devices, largely det…
Physics phenomena of multi-soliton complexes have enriched the life of dissipative solitons in fiber lasers. By developing a birefringence-enhanced fiber laser, we report the first experimental observation of group-velocity-locked vector soliton (GVLVS) molecules. The birefringence-enhanced fiber laser facilitates the generation of GVLVSs, where the two orthogonally polarized components are coupled together to form a multi-soliton complex. Moreover, the interaction of repulsive and attractive forces between multiple pulses binds the particle-like GVLVSs together in time domain to further form …
We report on an asymmetric high energy dual optical parametric amplifier (OPA) which is capable of having either the idlers, signals, or depleted pumps, relatively phase locked at commensurate or incommensurate wavelengths. Idlers and signals can be locked on the order of 200 mrad rms or better, corresponding to a 212 as jitter at $λ$=2$μ$m. The high energy arm of the OPA outputs a combined 3.5 mJ of signal and idler, while the low energy arm outputs 1.5 mJ, with the entire system being pumped with a 1 kHz, 18 mJ Ti:Sapphire laser. Both arms are independently tunable from 1080 nm-2600 nm. The …
By identifying the similarities between the coupled-wave equations and the parametrically driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we unveil the existence condition of the quadratic soliton mode-locked degenerate optical parametric oscillator in the previously unexplored parameter space of near-zero group velocity mismatch. We study the nature of the quadratic solitons and divide their dynamics into two distinctive branches depending on the system parameters. We find the nonlinear interaction between the resonant pump and signal results in phenomena that resemble the dispersive two-photon absorp…
A soliton explosion is an instability whereby a dissipative soliton undergoes a sudden structural collapse, but remarkably returns back to its original shape after a short transient. We recently reported the first experimental observation of this effect in a fiber laser (A. F. J. Runge et al., Optica 2, 36 (2015)). Here, we expand on our initial work, presenting a more detailed experimental and numerical study of the characteristics and dynamics of soliton explosions in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. Specifically, we explore different cavity configurations and gain levels, observing and c…
We demonstrate a two-crystal mid-infrared dual-wavelength optical parametric oscillator, synchronously pumped by a high power femtosecond Yb:fiber laser. The singly-resonant ring cavity, containing two periodically poled lithium niobate crystals, is capable of generating two synchronized idler wavelengths, independently tunable over 30 THz in the 2.9 - 4.2 μm wavelength region, due to the cascaded quadratic nonlinear effect. The independent tunability of the two idlers makes the optical parametric oscillator a promising source for ultrafast pulse generation towards the THz wavelength region, b…
We have demonstrated a mode-locked Mamyshev oscillator based on a single-mode-fibre configuration with low threshould. The influences of spectral filters and the pump power on the output laser characteristics have been investigated. In the case with spectral-filter central wavelength far away from the peak of gain spectrum, the laser pulses have deviated slightly from similariton evolution with gain-shaping under high pump power. Moreover, self-starting mode-locking operation has been realized when the pump power was only 520 mW, which might benefit from the appropriate polarization conditions…
Continuously pumped passive nonlinear cavities can be harnessed for the creation of novel optical frequency combs. While most research has focused on third-order "Kerr" nonlinear interactions, recent studies have shown that frequency comb formation can also occur via second-order nonlinear effects. Here, we report on the formation of quadratic combs in optical parametric oscillator (OPO) configurations. Specifically, we demonstrate that optical frequency combs can be generated in the parametric region around half of the pump frequency in a continuously-driven OPO. We also model the OPO dynamic…
High coherence visible and near-visible laser sources are centrally important to the operation of advanced position/navigation/timing systems as well as classical/quantum sensing systems. However, the complexity and size of these bench-top lasers is an impediment to their transitioning beyond the laboratory. Here, a system-on-a-chip that emits high-coherence visible and near-visible lightwaves is demonstrated. The devices rely upon a new approach wherein wavelength conversion and coherence increase by self-injection-locking are combined within in a single nonlinear resonator. This simplified a…
We report on a novel experimental scheme to generate continuous-wave (cw), high power, and higher-order optical vortices tunable across mid-IR wavelength range. Using cw, two-crystal, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (T-SRO) and pumping one of the crystals with Gaussian beam and the other crystal with optical vortices of orders, lp = 1 to 6, we have directly transferred the vortices at near-IR to the mid-IR wavelength range. The idler vortices of orders, li = 1 to 6, are tunable across 2276-3576 nm with a maximum output power of 6.8 W at order of, li = 1, for the pump power of 25 …
We investigate mode-locking processes in lasers displaying a variable degree of structural randomness, from standard optical cavities to multiple-scattering media. By employing methods mutuated from spin-glass theory, we analyze the mean-field Hamiltonian and derive a phase-diagram in terms of the pumping rate and the degree of disorder. Three phases are found: i) paramagnetic, corresponding to a noisy continuous wave emission, ii) ferromagnetic, that describes the standard passive mode-locking, and iii) the spin-glass in which the phases of the electromagnetic field are frozen in a exponentia…
We report the relative frequency stabilization of an intracavity frequency doubled singly resonant optical parametric oscillator on a Fabry-Perotétalon. The red/orange radiation produced by the frequency doubling of the intracavity resonant idler is stabilized using the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique. The relative frequency noise of this orange light, when integrated from 1 Hz to 50 kHz, corresponds to a standard deviation of 700 Hz. The frequency noise of the pump laser is shown experimentally to be transferred to the non resonant signal beam.
We start an environmentally-stable linear Mamyshev oscillator with electronically-controlled modulated pump and a moving filter. It delivers a 21-nJ pulse that becomes 65 fs in duration after a compressor. Reliable starting into stable mode-locking is found achievable with a modulated mode-locked state observed only when the modulation frequency is larger than 70 kHz. To avoid the damage of the gain fiber, two Faraday rotators are introduced. Besides, we have studied several aspects toward obtaining successful starting.
We report a few-cycle, broadband, singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the mid-infrared based on MgO-doped periodically-poled LiNbO3 (MgO:PPLN), synchronously pumped by a 20-fs Ti:sapphire laser. By using crystal interaction lengths as short as 250 um, and careful dispersion management of input pump pulses and the OPO resonator, near-transform-limited, few-cycle idler pulses tunable across the mid-infrared have been generated, with as few as 3.7 optical cycles at 2682 nm. The OPO can be continuously tuned over 2179-3732 nm by cavity delay tuning, providing up to 33 mW of out…
We report second harmonic generation from a titanium indiffused lithium niobate waveguide resonator device whose cavity length is locked to the fundamental pump laser using an on-chip phase modulator. The device remains locked for more than 5 minutes, producing more than 80\% of the initial second harmonic power. The stability of the system is seen to be limited by DC-drift, a known effect in many lithium niobate systems that include deposited electrodes. The presented device explores the suitability of waveguide resonators in this platform for use in larger integrated networks.
Phase-locked laser arrays have been extensively investigated in terms of their stability and nonlinear dynamics. Specifically, enhancing the phase-locking stability allows laser arrays to generate high-power and steerable coherent optical beams for a plethora of applications, including remote sensing and optical communications. Compared to other coupling architectures, laterally coupled lasers are especially desirable since they allow for denser integration and simpler fabrication process. Here, we present the theoretical effects of varying the spontaneous emission factor $β$, an important par…
The evolution versus pump power of the spectrum of a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator based on an MgO-doped periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal is observed. The onset of cascade Raman lasing due to stimulated Raman scattering in the nonlinear crystal is analyzed. Spurious frequency doubling and sum-frequency generation phenomena are observed and understood. A strong reduction of the intracavity Raman scattering is obtained by a careful adjustment of the cavity losses.
We report on the first singly-resonant (SR), synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OP-GaAs). Together with a doubly resonant (DR) degenerate OPO based on the same OP-GaAs material, the output spectra cover 3 to 6 $μ$m within ~3 dB of relative power. The DR-OPO has the highest output power reported to date from a femtosecond, synchronously pumped OPO based on OP-GaAs. We discovered strong three photon absorption with a coefficient of 0.35 ${\pm}$ 0.06 cm${^3}$/GW${^2}$ for our OP-GaAs sample, which limits the output power of th…
