We consider an application of variational-wavelet approach to nonlinear collective models of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy. We obtain fast convergent multiresolution representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons).
The grains immersed in plasma get eroded by the ions falling onto them. As a consequence, they exhibit self-consistent mass fluctuations due to perturbations in the plasma charging currents. The grain mass is then a dynamical variable. The modifications in the plasma dielectric properties are investigated and new ultra-low frequency modes are shown to exist in the plasma.
QED cascades play an important role in extreme astrophysical environments like magnetars. They can also be produced by passing a relativistic electron beam through an intense laser field. Signatures of collective pair plasma effects in these QED cascades are shown to appear, in exquisite detail, through plasma-induced frequency upshifts in the laser spectrum. Remarkably, these signatures can be detected even in small plasma volumes moving at relativistic speeds. Strong-field quantum and collective pair plasma effects can thus be explored with existing technology, provided that ultra-dense elec…
Quantum plasmas is a rapidly expanding field of research, with applications ranging from nanoelectronics, nanoscale devices and ultracold plasmas, to inertial confinement fusion and astrophysics. Here we give a short systematic overview of quantum plasmas. In particular, we analyze the collective effects due to spin using fluid models. The introduction of an intrinsic magnetization due to the plasma electron (or positron) spin properties in the magnetohydrodynamic limit is discussed. Finally, a discussion of the theory and examples of applications is given.
Nano-plasmas produced, e.g. in clusters after short-pulse laser irradiation, can show collective excitations as derived from the time evolution of fluctuations in thermodynamic equilibrium. Molecular dynamical simulations are performed for various cluster sizes. New data are obtained for the minimum value of the stationary cluster charge. The bi-local auto-correlation function gives the spatial structure of the eigenmodes, for which energy eigenvalues are obtained. Varying the cluster size, starting from a few-particles cluster, the emergence of macroscopic properties like collective excitatio…
We present an investigation of the combined effects of the Debye-Huckel (DH) repulsive and overlaping Debye spheres (ODS) attractive interaction potentials around charged dust particles on collective modes, phase separation and ordered dust structures in a strongly coupled dusty plasma. We obtain static and dynamical information via Molecular Dynamics simulations in the liquid and crystallized phases and identify the onset of an instability in the transverse collective mode, by using (zero-temperature) lattice summation method. The present results are useful for understanding the origin of coa…
Using a new technique to directly detect current induced on a nearby electrode, we measure plasma oscillations in ultracold plasmas, which are influenced by the inhomogeneous and time-varying density and changing neutrality. Electronic detection avoids heating and evaporation dynamics associated with previous measurements and allows us to test the importance of the plasma neutrality. We apply dc and pulsed electric fields to control the electron loss rate and find that the charge imbalance of the plasma has a significant effect on the resonant frequency, in excellent agreement with recent pred…
We formulate a possible description of the deflection of a relativistic $e^-$ beam in an inhomogeneous copper plasma, encountered by the beam when propagating through a accelerating cell that has undergone a high electric-field RF-breakdown. It is well known that an inhomogeneous plasma forms and may last for up to a few micro-seconds, until recombination in an accelerating structure where a field-emission triggers melting and ionization of RF-cell wall deformity. We present a preliminary model for the beam deflection due to collective plasma response based upon the beam density, plasma densit…
The current understanding of some important nonlinear collective processes in quantum plasmas with degenerate electrons is presented. After reviewing the basic properties of quantum plasmas, we present model equations (e.g. the quantum hydrodynamic and effective nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson equations) that describe collective nonlinear phenomena at nanoscales. The effects of the electron degeneracy arise due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Pauli's exclusion principle for overlapping electron wavefunctions that result in tunneling of electrons and the electron degeneracy pressure. Si…
In this paper we discuss the relations between the exact shape of interparticle interactions in complex (dusty) plasmas and the dispersion relation of the longitudinal collective mode. Several representative repulsive potentials, predicted previously theoretically, are chosen and the corresponding dispersion relations are calculated using the quasi-crystalline approximation. Both weakly coupled and strongly coupled regimes are considered. It is shown that the long-wavelength portions of the dispersion relations are sensitive to the long-range asymptote of the interaction potential. This can be…
Collective excitations of rotating dusty plasma are analyzed under the quasi localized charge approximation (QLCA) framework for strongly coupled systems by explicitly accounting for the dust rotation in the analysis. Considering the firm analogy of magnetoplasmons with "rotoplasmons" established by the recent rotating dusty plasma experiments, the relaxation introduced by the rotation in their strong coupling and 2-dimensional (often introduced by gravitational sedimentation) characteristics is emphasized in their dispersion. Finite rotation version of both strong and weak coupling dispersion…
An active plasma lens focuses the beam in both the horizontal and vertical planes simultaneously using a magnetic field generated by a discharge current through the plasma. A beam size of 5--10 $μ$m can be achieved within a short distance using a focusing gradient on the order of 100 T/m. The active plasma lens is therefore an attractive element for plasma wakefield acceleration, because an ultra-small size of the witness electron beam is required for injection into the plasma wakefield to minimize emittance growth and to enhance the capturing efficiency. When the drive beam and witness electr…
We study the onset and characteristics of vortices in complex (dusty) plasmas using two-dimensional simulations in a setup modeled after the PK-3 Plus laboratory. A small number of microparticles initially self-arranges in a monolayer around the void. As additional particles are introduced, an extended system of vortices develops due to a non-zero curl of the plasma forces. We demonstrate a shear-thinning effect in the vortices. Velocity structure functions and the energy and enstrophy spectra show that vortex flow turbulence is present that is in essence of the "classical" Kolmogorov type.
In this study we report the effects of an external electromagnetic field on the collective properties of unmagnetized plasmas. The calculations are carried out in the semi-classical approximation, i.e., the electromagnetic field is treated classically and the electrons from a quantum mechanical viewpoint. The results show that the collective modes are damped away more smoothly and in a smaller frequency range than those reported by previous studies. An exponential-like decay of the plasmon frequencies as a function of the external field amplitude is readily observed. We successfully recreate t…
We investigate collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream non-equilibrium plasmas analytically, numerically and experimentally. In laboratory astrophysics, CTS is a unique tool to obtain local plasma diagnostics. While the standard CTS theory assumes plasmas to be linear, stationary, isotropic and equilibrium, it is often nonlinear, non-stationary, anisotropic, and non-equilibrium in high energy phenomena relevant to laboratory astrophysics. We theoretically calculate and numerically simulate the CTS spectra in two-stream plasmas as a typical example of non-equilibrium system in space a…
We present experimental measurements of a pulsed plasma gun, using two-colour imaging laser interferometry and spatially resolved Thomson scattering. Interferometry measurements give an electron density $n_e\approx2.7\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ at the centre of the plasma plume, at 5 mm from the plasma gun nozzle. The Thomson scattered light is collected from two probing angles allowed us to simultaneously measure the collective and non-collective spectrum of the electron feature from the same spatial locations. The inferred electron densities from the location of the electron plasma waves is in …
Propagation of charged particle beams in background plasma as a method of space charge neutralization has been shown to achieve a high degree of charge and current neutralization and therefore enables nearly ballistic propagation and focusing of charged particle beams. Correspondingly, use of plasmas for propagation of charged particle beams has important applications for transport and focusing of intense particle beams in inertial fusion and high energy density laboratory plasma physics. However, the streaming of beam ions through a background plasma can lead to development of the two-stream …
In the past decades, beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) experiments have seen remarkable progress by using high-energy particle beams such as electron, positron and proton beams to drive wakes in neutral gas or pre-ionized plasma. This review highlights a few recent experiments in the world to compare experiment parameters and results.
A new quasi-neutral model describing the Weibel instability of a high-current relativistic beam propagating through a resistive plasma is developed. It treats beam electrons as kinetic particles, and ambient plasma as a non-relativistic fluid. For a finite-temperature beam, a new class of negative energy magneto-sound waves is identified, which can possess negative energy. Their growth due to collisional dissipation in the cold return current destabilizes the beam-plasma system even for high beam temperatures. We perform detailed two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of…
A classical dusty plasma experiment was performed using two different dust grain sizes to form a strongly coupled asymmetric bilayer (two closely spaced interacting monolayers) of two species of charged dust particles. The observation and analysis of the thermally excited particle oscillations revealed the collective mode structure and wave dispersion in this system; in particular the existence of the theoretically predicted $k=0$ energy (frequency) gap was verified. Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to emulate the experiment, assuming Yukawa type inter-particle interac…
Collective response of the plasma medium is well known and has been explored extensively in several contexts. The single particle response is typically treated as collisional interactions leading to dissipative effects. In this manuscript a 2D molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of dusty plasma with Yukawa interactions amidst dust grains have been considered in a strongly coupled regime. It has been shown that disturbances induced in the crystal by introducing highly charged particle elicit both collective and single particle responses. The single particle collisional interaction often generate…
A long, relativistic charged particle beam propagating in a plasma is subject to the self-modulation instability. This instability is analyzed and the growth rate is calculated, including the phase relation. The phase velocity of the accelerating field is shown to be significantly less than the drive beam velocity. These results indicate that the energy gain of a plasma accelerator driven by a self-modulated beam will be severely limited by dephasing. In the long-beam, strongly-coupled regime, dephasing is reached in less than four e-foldings, independent of beam-plasma parameters.
The long-time evolution of the two-stream instability of a cold ion beam pulse propagating though the background plasma is investigated using a large-scale one-dimensional electrostatic kinetic simulation. The three stages of the instability are identified and investigated in detail. After the initial linear growth and saturation by the electron trapping, a portion of the initially trapped electrons becomes detrapped and moves ahead of the ion beam pulse forming a {forerunner} electron beam, which causes a secondary two-stream instability that preheats the upstream plasma electrons. Consequent…
The problem of beam propagation in a plasma with small scale and low intensity inhomogeneities is investigated. It is shown that the electron beam propagates in a plasma as a beam-plasma structure and is a source of Langmuir waves. The plasma inhomogeneity changes the spatial distribution of the waves. The spatial distribution of the waves is fully determined by the distribution of plasma inhomogeneities. The possible applications to the theory of radio emission associated with electron beams are discussed.
We have numerically studied the evolution of the heavy ions that expand in a cold background plasma at a large scale. Two typical collective behaviors of the heavy ions are identified with the conditions where only the traversing heavy ion's initial total mass is different. Our work has demonstrated that a difference in the initial total mass of the moving heavy ions is able to induce completely different collective behaviors of the plasma. The simulation is performed via the hybrid model, in which the ions and electrons are treated as classical particles and mass-less fluid, respectively. Due…
The collective modes of a familiar two-dimensional one-component-plasma with the repulsive logarithmic interaction between the particles are analysed using the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) combined with the molecular dynamic simulation of the equilibrium structural properties. It is found that the dispersion curves in the strongly coupled regime are virtually independent of the coupling strength. Arguments based on the excluded volume consideration for the radial distribution function allow us to derive very simple expressions for the dispersion relations, which show excellent agreeme…
By combining the linear theory and numerical simulations, we study the response of a radially bounded axisymmetric plasma to relativistic charged particle beams in a wide range of plasma densities. We present analytical expressions for the magnetic field generated in the dense plasma, prove vanishing of the wakefield potential beyond the trajectory of the outermost plasma electron, and follow the wakefield potential change as the plasma density decreases. At high plasma densities, wavefronts of electron density and radial electric field are distorted because of beam charge and current neutrali…
The results of a recent fluid theory for the multipole modes of a Yukawa plasma in a spherical confinement [H. Kählert and M. Bonitz, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{82}, 036407 (2010)] are compared with molecular dynamics simulations and the exact $N$-particle eigenmodes in the crystalline phase. Simulations confirm the existence of high order modes found in cold fluid theory. We investigate the influence of screening, coupling and friction on the mode spectra in detail. Good agreement between theory and simulation is found for weak to moderate screening and low order modes. The relations between the br…
Compton scattering of gamma rays propagating in a pair plasma can drive the formation of a relativistic electron positron beam. This process is scrutinised theoretically and numerically via particle-in-cell simulations. In addition, we determine in which conditions the beam can prompt a beam-plasma instability and convert its kinetic energy into magnetic energy. We argue that such conditions can be met at the photosphere radius of bright Gamma Ray Bursts.
The Smith Purcell radiation as one promising THz radiation source has been studied for decades. Various structure designs and beam configurations have been proposed. In this paper, we report our recent exploration of Smith Purcell radiation driven by electron beam accelerated by plasma wakefield.
A self-consistent nonlinear hydrodynamic theory is presented of the propagation of a long and thin relativistic electron beam, for a typical plasma wake field acceleration configuration in an unmagnetized and overdense plasma. The random component of the trajectories of the beam particles as well as of their velocity spread is modelled by an anisotropic temperature, allowing the beam dynamics to be approximated as a 3-D adiabatic expansion/compression. {It is shown that even in the absence of the {nonlinear plasma wake force}, the localization of the beam in the transverse direction can be ach…
In this paper, electromagnetic emissions produced in a thin beam-plasma system are studied using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. For the first time, the problem of emission generation in such a system is considered in the realistic formulation allowing for the continuous injection of a relativistic electron beam through the plasma boundary. Specific attention is given to the thin plasma case in which the transverse plasma size is comparable to the typical wavelength of beam-driven oscillations. Such a case is often implemented in laboratory beam-plasma experiments and has a numbe…
We discuss a theoretical interpretation of the experiment by Fletcher, Zhang, and Rolston [PRL, 96, 105003 (2006)], who revealed a number of subharmonics of the electron emission under external irradiation of the freely-expanding clouds of ultracold plasmas. The original interpretation of these subharmonics as standing waves of plasma oscillations (the so-called Tonks-Dattner resonances) encounters a number of problems, such as the lack of adequate boundary conditions and incorrect dependence on the plasma temperature and the degree of neutrality. It is the aim of the present comment to mentio…
Ultra-relativistic hollow electron beams can drive plasma wakefields ($\sim$ GV/m) suitable for positron acceleration. Stable propagation of hollow electron beams for long distances in plasmas is required to accelerate positrons to high energies by these plasma wakefields. In this work, we show by quasi-static kinetic simulations using the code WAKE that an ultra-relativistic azimuthally-symmetric hollow electron beam propagates in a plasma by developing fish-bone like structure and shifting its bulk, differentially along its length (rear part fastest), towards its axis due to the decrease in …
A statistical model for forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (FSBS) is developed for a spatially incoherent, monochromatic, laser beam propagating in a plasma. A threshold for the average power in a speckle is found, well below the self-focusing one, above which the laser beam spatial incoherence can not prevent the coherent growth of FSBS. Three-dimensional simulations confirm its existence and reveal the onset of beam spray above it. From these results, we propose a new figure of merit for the control of the propagation through a plasma of a spatially incoherent laser beam.
Producing a dense background plasma for neutralization purposes is experimentally difficult and requires a large amount of energy. We show that even an underdense background plasma with a small relative density can achieve high neutralization of intense ion beam pulses. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that if the total plasma electron charge is not comparable to the beam charge, electron emitters are necessary for effective neutralization, but are not needed if the plasma volume is large. Several plasma densities are investigated, including the case of electron emitters without pla…
In the paper, the functional definition of a plasma for-injector of separable material is presented, and the requirements to it are formulated. The version of a device for the material separation into elements based on the beam-plasma discharge is under consideration. The dimensions of a pilot separating device are determined. The following quantities are estimated: the particle concentration per unit length of the separating device, effective length of the beam-plasma interaction (BPI) within the separating device, dynamics of a plasma density increase for metallic uranium, and thermal charac…
We consider an application of modification of our variational-wavelet approach to some nonlinear collective model of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy related to modeling of propagation of intense charged particle beams in high-intensity accelerators and transport systems. We use fast convergent multiscale variational-wavelet representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons). In cont…
A plasma blob is modeled as consisting of two homogeneous spheres of equal radius and equal but opposite charge densities that can move relative to each other. Relative translational and rotational motion are considered separately. Magnetic effects from the current density caused by the relative motion are included. Magnetic interaction is seen to cause an inductive inertia. In the relative translation case the Coulomb attraction, approximately a linear force for small amplitudes, causes an oscillation. For a large number of particles the corresponding oscillation frequency will not be the Lan…
We present a \emph{Mathematica} notebook allowing for the symbolic calculation of the $3\times3$ dielectric tensor of a electron-beam plasma system in the fluid approximation. Calculation is detailed for a cold relativistic electron beam entering a cold magnetized plasma, and for arbitrarily oriented wave vectors. We show how one can elaborate on this example to account for temperatures, arbitrarily oriented magnetic field or a different kind of plasma.
Efficiency of collective beam-plasma interaction strongly depends on the growth rates of dominant instabilities excited in the system. Nevertheless, exact calculations of the full unstable spectrum in the framework of relativistic kinetic theory for arbitrary magnetic fields and particle distributions were unknown until now. In this paper we give an example of such a calculation answering the question whether the finite thermal spreads of plasma electrons are able to suppress the fastest growing modes in the beam-plasma system. It is shown that nonrelativistic temperatures of Maxwellian plasma…
Interaction of an intense electron beam with a finite-length, inhomogeneous plasma is investigated numerically. The plasma density profile is maximal in the middle and decays towards the plasma edges. Two regimes of the two-stream instability are observed. In one regime, the frequency of the instability is the plasma frequency at the density maximum and plasma waves are excited in the middle of the plasma. In the other regime, the frequency of the instability matches the local plasma frequency near the edges of the plasma and the intense plasma oscillations occur near plasma boundaries. The la…
We develop a universal framework which allows quickly solve a wide class of problems for longitudinal space charge effects in beams and plasmas in cylindrical geometry. We introduce the longitudinal dielectric permittivity for the beam of charged particles, which describes its collective space charge response. The analyis yields an effective plasma frequency, which depends on the transverse geometry of the system. This dielectric permittivity mirrors the dielectric permittivity of plasma and matches the one dimensional (1D) expression once the transverse size of the beam is large. Several part…
In this paper we discuss design considerations and beam dynamics challenges associated with laser-driven plasma-based accelerators as applied to multi-TeV-scale linear colliders. Plasma accelerators provide ultra-high gradients and ultra-short bunches, offering the potential for compact linacs and reduced power requirements. We show that stable, efficient acceleration with beam quality preservation is possible in the nonlinear bubble regime of laser-plasma accelerators using beam shaping. Ion motion, naturally occuring for dense beams (i.e., low emittance and high energy) severely damps transv…
Generation of terahertz electromagnetic radiation due to coalescence of upper-hybrid waves in the long-wavelength region of strong plasma turbulence driven by a high-current relativistic electron beam in a magnetized plasma is investigated. The width of frequency spectrum as well as angular characteristics of this radiation for various values of plasma density and turbulence energy are calculated using the simple theoretical model adequately describing beam-plasma experiments at mirror traps. It is shown that the power density of electromagnetic emission at the second harmonic of plasma freque…
Kinetic model of three component, weakly ionized, collisional plasma with a beam of neutral particles is developed. New dispersion relations for linear perturbations are derived and analyzed in various limiting cases.
The nonlinear propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in an ion-beam driven plasma with Boltzmannian electrons, positive ions and stationary charged dust grains, is studied by using the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT). It is shown that there exist two critical values $(γ_{c1}$ and $γ_{c2})$ of ion-beam to ion phase speed ratio $(γ)$, beyond which the beam generated solitons are not possible. The effects of the parameters, namely $γ$, the ratio of the ion-beam to plasma ion density $(μ_{i})$, the dust to ion density ratio $(μ_{d})$ as well as th…
A numerical analysis of the self-interaction induced by a relativistic electron/positron beam in the presence of an intense external longitudinal magnetic field in plasmas is carried out. Within the context of the Plasma Wake Field theory in the overdense regime, the transverse beam-plasma dynamics is described by a quantumlike Zakharov system of equations in the long beam limit provided by the Thermal Wave Model. In the limiting case of beam spot size much larger than the plasma wavelength, the Zakharov system is reduced to a 2D Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation, where the trap potential well is…
Interaction of an intense electromagnetic (EM) beam with hot relativistic plasma is investigated. It is shown that the thermal pressure brings about a fundamental change in the dynamics - localized, high amplitude, EM field structures, not accessible to a cold (but relativisic) plasma, can now be formed under well- defined conditions. Examples of the trapping of EM beams in self-guiding regimes to form stable 2D solitonic structures in a pure e-p plasma are worked out.
The self-modulation instability is a key effect that makes possible the usage of nowadays proton beams as drivers for plasma wakefield acceleration. Development of the instability in uniform plasmas and in plasmas with a small density up-step is numerically studied with the focus at nonlinear stages of beam evolution. The step parameters providing the strongest established wakefield are found, and the mechanism of stable bunch train formation is identified.
The nonlinear evolution of electromagnetic instabilities driven by the interpenetration of two $e^-\,e^+$ plasma clouds is explored using {\it ab initio} kinetic plasma simulations. We show that the plasma clouds slow down due to both oblique and Weibel generated electromagnetic fields, which deflect the particle trajectories, transferring bulk forward momentum into transverse momentum and thermal velocity spread. This process causes the flow velocity $v_{inst}$ to decrease approximately by a factor of $\sqrt{1/3}$ in a time interval $Δt_{αB} ω_p \sim c/(v_{fl}\sqrt{α_B})$, where $α_B$ is the …
The stability of the system comprising the cold immobile Lorentz plasma of density $N_e$ and the directed nonrelativistic (velocity $\vec{V}$) electronic beam of a small density $N'_e << N_e$ is investigated. The instability increment of the system is found via analysis of the electric permittivity $ε(ω)$ in the limiting case of $ω$ being much greater than the effective frequency of collisions. A conclusion is made that the system in question is stable with respect to oscillations with relatively small values of $\vec{k} \vec{V}$.
Motivated by rapid advances in plasma based accelerators, we propose a simple mechanism for the production of highly collimated quasi monochromatic electrons beams. By considering Compton scattering of electrons (in the plasma) with virtual photons -- through an effective interaction --- we demonstrate angular collimation with a divergence less than 3 mrad quasi mono-energetic nature of the beam and an energy gain of O (1 GeV/cm), in laser induced accelerators.
We investigate beam loading and emittance preservation for a high-charge electron beam being accelerated in quasi-linear plasma wakefields driven by a short proton beam. The structure of the studied wakefields are similar to those of a long, modulated proton beam, such as the AWAKE proton driver. We show that by properly choosing the electron beam parameters and exploiting two well known effects, beam loading of the wakefield and full blow out of plasma electrons by the accelerated beam, the electron beam can gain large amounts of energy with a narrow final energy spread (%-level) and without …
Breaking of a plasma wave driven by a long beam of charged particles results in electron jets escaping from the plasma column and forming an electron halo. For plasma densities less than or of the order of the beam density, this process is well described by a semi-analytical model, which agrees with simulations and allows to calculate the position of wavebreaking points and determine the regions around the plasma column occupied by the halo.
The existence of large-amplitude electron-acoustic solitary structures is investigated in an unmagnetized and collisionless two-temperature dusty plasma penetrated by an electron beam. A nonlinear pseudopotential technique is used to investigate the occurrence of stationary-profile solitary waves, and their parametric dependence on the electron beam and dust perturbation is discussed.
