A plasma blob is modeled as consisting of two homogeneous spheres of equal radius and equal but opposite charge densities that can move relative to each other. Relative translational and rotational motion are considered separately. Magnetic effects from the current density caused by the relative motion are included. Magnetic interaction is seen to cause an inductive inertia. In the relative translation case the Coulomb attraction, approximately a linear force for small amplitudes, causes an oscillation. For a large number of particles the corresponding oscillation frequency will not be the Langmuir plasma frequency, because of the large inductive inertia. For rotation an external magnetic field is included and the energy and diamagnetism of the plasma in the model is calculated. Finally it is noted how the neglect of resistivity is motivated by the results.
Quantum plasmas is a rapidly expanding field of research, with applications ranging from nanoelectronics, nanoscale devices and ultracold plasmas, to inertial confinement fusion and astrophysics. Here we give a short systematic overview of quantum plasmas. In particular, we analyze the collective effects due to spin using fluid models. The introduction of an intrinsic magnetization due to the plasma electron (or positron) spin properties in the magnetohydrodynamic limit is discussed. Finally, a discussion of the theory and examples of applications is given.
Nano-plasmas produced, e.g. in clusters after short-pulse laser irradiation, can show collective excitations as derived from the time evolution of fluctuations in thermodynamic equilibrium. Molecular dynamical simulations are performed for various cluster sizes. New data are obtained for the minimum value of the stationary cluster charge. The bi-local auto-correlation function gives the spatial structure of the eigenmodes, for which energy eigenvalues are obtained. Varying the cluster size, starting from a few-particles cluster, the emergence of macroscopic properties like collective excitatio…
We present an investigation of the combined effects of the Debye-Huckel (DH) repulsive and overlaping Debye spheres (ODS) attractive interaction potentials around charged dust particles on collective modes, phase separation and ordered dust structures in a strongly coupled dusty plasma. We obtain static and dynamical information via Molecular Dynamics simulations in the liquid and crystallized phases and identify the onset of an instability in the transverse collective mode, by using (zero-temperature) lattice summation method. The present results are useful for understanding the origin of coa…
Using a new technique to directly detect current induced on a nearby electrode, we measure plasma oscillations in ultracold plasmas, which are influenced by the inhomogeneous and time-varying density and changing neutrality. Electronic detection avoids heating and evaporation dynamics associated with previous measurements and allows us to test the importance of the plasma neutrality. We apply dc and pulsed electric fields to control the electron loss rate and find that the charge imbalance of the plasma has a significant effect on the resonant frequency, in excellent agreement with recent pred…
A dust grain in a plasma has a fluctuating electric charge, and past work concludes that spherical grains in a stationary, collisionless plasma have an essentially Gaussian charge probability distribution. This paper extends that work to flowing plasmas and arbitrarily large spheres, deriving analytic charge probability distributions up to normalizing constants. We find that these distributions also have good Gaussian approximations, with analytic expressions for their mean and variance.
The current understanding of some important nonlinear collective processes in quantum plasmas with degenerate electrons is presented. After reviewing the basic properties of quantum plasmas, we present model equations (e.g. the quantum hydrodynamic and effective nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson equations) that describe collective nonlinear phenomena at nanoscales. The effects of the electron degeneracy arise due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Pauli's exclusion principle for overlapping electron wavefunctions that result in tunneling of electrons and the electron degeneracy pressure. Si…
Collective excitations of rotating dusty plasma are analyzed under the quasi localized charge approximation (QLCA) framework for strongly coupled systems by explicitly accounting for the dust rotation in the analysis. Considering the firm analogy of magnetoplasmons with "rotoplasmons" established by the recent rotating dusty plasma experiments, the relaxation introduced by the rotation in their strong coupling and 2-dimensional (often introduced by gravitational sedimentation) characteristics is emphasized in their dispersion. Finite rotation version of both strong and weak coupling dispersion…
We study the onset and characteristics of vortices in complex (dusty) plasmas using two-dimensional simulations in a setup modeled after the PK-3 Plus laboratory. A small number of microparticles initially self-arranges in a monolayer around the void. As additional particles are introduced, an extended system of vortices develops due to a non-zero curl of the plasma forces. We demonstrate a shear-thinning effect in the vortices. Velocity structure functions and the energy and enstrophy spectra show that vortex flow turbulence is present that is in essence of the "classical" Kolmogorov type.
We present experimental measurements of a pulsed plasma gun, using two-colour imaging laser interferometry and spatially resolved Thomson scattering. Interferometry measurements give an electron density $n_e\approx2.7\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ at the centre of the plasma plume, at 5 mm from the plasma gun nozzle. The Thomson scattered light is collected from two probing angles allowed us to simultaneously measure the collective and non-collective spectrum of the electron feature from the same spatial locations. The inferred electron densities from the location of the electron plasma waves is in …
A classical dusty plasma experiment was performed using two different dust grain sizes to form a strongly coupled asymmetric bilayer (two closely spaced interacting monolayers) of two species of charged dust particles. The observation and analysis of the thermally excited particle oscillations revealed the collective mode structure and wave dispersion in this system; in particular the existence of the theoretically predicted $k=0$ energy (frequency) gap was verified. Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to emulate the experiment, assuming Yukawa type inter-particle interac…
Collective response of the plasma medium is well known and has been explored extensively in several contexts. The single particle response is typically treated as collisional interactions leading to dissipative effects. In this manuscript a 2D molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of dusty plasma with Yukawa interactions amidst dust grains have been considered in a strongly coupled regime. It has been shown that disturbances induced in the crystal by introducing highly charged particle elicit both collective and single particle responses. The single particle collisional interaction often generate…
The results of a recent fluid theory for the multipole modes of a Yukawa plasma in a spherical confinement [H. Kählert and M. Bonitz, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{82}, 036407 (2010)] are compared with molecular dynamics simulations and the exact $N$-particle eigenmodes in the crystalline phase. Simulations confirm the existence of high order modes found in cold fluid theory. We investigate the influence of screening, coupling and friction on the mode spectra in detail. Good agreement between theory and simulation is found for weak to moderate screening and low order modes. The relations between the br…
In the last experiment with the PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station, interactions of millimeter-size metallic spheres with a complex plasma were studied~[M. Schwabe {\it et al.}, New J. Phys. {\bf 19}, 103019 (2017)]. Among the phenomena observed was the formation of cavities (regions free of microparticles forming a complex plasma) surrounding the spheres. The size of the cavity is governed by the balance of forces experienced by the microparticles at the cavity edge. In this article we develop a detailed theoretical model describing the cavity size and demonstrate th…
The nonlinear evolution of electromagnetic instabilities driven by the interpenetration of two $e^-\,e^+$ plasma clouds is explored using {\it ab initio} kinetic plasma simulations. We show that the plasma clouds slow down due to both oblique and Weibel generated electromagnetic fields, which deflect the particle trajectories, transferring bulk forward momentum into transverse momentum and thermal velocity spread. This process causes the flow velocity $v_{inst}$ to decrease approximately by a factor of $\sqrt{1/3}$ in a time interval $Δt_{αB} ω_p \sim c/(v_{fl}\sqrt{α_B})$, where $α_B$ is the …
We numerically study the effects of varying electric conductivity and magnetic permeability of the bounding wall on a kinematic dynamo in a sphere for parameters relevant to Madison plasma dynamo experiment (MPDX). The dynamo is excited by a laminar, axisymmetric flow of von Karman type. The flow is obtained as a solution to the Navier-Stokes equation for an isothermal fluid with a velocity profile specified at the sphere's boundary. The properties of the wall are taken into account as thin-wall boundary conditions imposed on the magnetic field. It is found that an increase in the permeability…
The grains immersed in plasma get eroded by the ions falling onto them. As a consequence, they exhibit self-consistent mass fluctuations due to perturbations in the plasma charging currents. The grain mass is then a dynamical variable. The modifications in the plasma dielectric properties are investigated and new ultra-low frequency modes are shown to exist in the plasma.
QED cascades play an important role in extreme astrophysical environments like magnetars. They can also be produced by passing a relativistic electron beam through an intense laser field. Signatures of collective pair plasma effects in these QED cascades are shown to appear, in exquisite detail, through plasma-induced frequency upshifts in the laser spectrum. Remarkably, these signatures can be detected even in small plasma volumes moving at relativistic speeds. Strong-field quantum and collective pair plasma effects can thus be explored with existing technology, provided that ultra-dense elec…

Classical MD data on the charge-charge dynamic structure factor of two-component plasmas (TCP) modeled in Phys. Rev. A 23, 2041 (1981) are analyzed using the sum rules and other exact relations. The convergent power moments of the imaginary part of the model system dielectric function are expressed in terms of its partial static structure factors, which are computed by the method of hypernetted chains using the Deutsch effective potential. High-frequency asymptotic behavior of the dielectric function is specified to include the effects of inverse bremsstrahlung. The agreement with the MD data …
In this paper, the collective dynamics of the large aspect ratio dusty plasma is studied over a wide range of discharge parameters. An inductively coupled diffused plasma, which creates an electrostatic trap to confine the negatively charged grains, is used to form a large volume (or large aspect ratio) dusty plasma at low pressure. For introducing the dust grains into the potential well, a unique technique using a secondary DC glow discharge plasma is employed. The dust dynamics is recorded in a 2-dimension (2D) plane at a given axial location. The dust fluid exhibits wave like behavior at lo…
In this paper we discuss the relations between the exact shape of interparticle interactions in complex (dusty) plasmas and the dispersion relation of the longitudinal collective mode. Several representative repulsive potentials, predicted previously theoretically, are chosen and the corresponding dispersion relations are calculated using the quasi-crystalline approximation. Both weakly coupled and strongly coupled regimes are considered. It is shown that the long-wavelength portions of the dispersion relations are sensitive to the long-range asymptote of the interaction potential. This can be…
In this study we report the effects of an external electromagnetic field on the collective properties of unmagnetized plasmas. The calculations are carried out in the semi-classical approximation, i.e., the electromagnetic field is treated classically and the electrons from a quantum mechanical viewpoint. The results show that the collective modes are damped away more smoothly and in a smaller frequency range than those reported by previous studies. An exponential-like decay of the plasmon frequencies as a function of the external field amplitude is readily observed. We successfully recreate t…
We investigate collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream non-equilibrium plasmas analytically, numerically and experimentally. In laboratory astrophysics, CTS is a unique tool to obtain local plasma diagnostics. While the standard CTS theory assumes plasmas to be linear, stationary, isotropic and equilibrium, it is often nonlinear, non-stationary, anisotropic, and non-equilibrium in high energy phenomena relevant to laboratory astrophysics. We theoretically calculate and numerically simulate the CTS spectra in two-stream plasmas as a typical example of non-equilibrium system in space a…
We propose a collective Thomson scattering experiment at the VUV free electron laser facility at DESY (FLASH) which aims to diagnose warm dense matter at near-solid density. The plasma region of interest marks the transition from an ideal plasma to a correlated and degenerate many-particle system and is of current interest, e.g. in ICF experiments or laboratory astrophysics. Plasma diagnostic of such plasmas is a longstanding issue. The collective electron plasma mode (plasmon) is revealed in a pump-probe scattering experiment using the high-brilliant radiation to probe the plasma. The distinc…
We have numerically studied the evolution of the heavy ions that expand in a cold background plasma at a large scale. Two typical collective behaviors of the heavy ions are identified with the conditions where only the traversing heavy ion's initial total mass is different. Our work has demonstrated that a difference in the initial total mass of the moving heavy ions is able to induce completely different collective behaviors of the plasma. The simulation is performed via the hybrid model, in which the ions and electrons are treated as classical particles and mass-less fluid, respectively. Due…
The collective modes of a familiar two-dimensional one-component-plasma with the repulsive logarithmic interaction between the particles are analysed using the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) combined with the molecular dynamic simulation of the equilibrium structural properties. It is found that the dispersion curves in the strongly coupled regime are virtually independent of the coupling strength. Arguments based on the excluded volume consideration for the radial distribution function allow us to derive very simple expressions for the dispersion relations, which show excellent agreeme…
Application of the ion sphere model (ISM), well known in the context of the one-component-plasma, to estimate thermodynamic properties of model Yukawa systems is discussed. It is shown that the ISM approximation provides fairly good estimate of the internal energy of the strongly coupled Yukawa systems, in both fluid and solid phases. Simple expressions for the excess pressure and isothermal compressibility are derived, which can be particularly useful in connection to wave phenomena in strongly coupled dusty plasmas. It is also shown that in the regime of strong screening a simple considerati…
We discuss a theoretical interpretation of the experiment by Fletcher, Zhang, and Rolston [PRL, 96, 105003 (2006)], who revealed a number of subharmonics of the electron emission under external irradiation of the freely-expanding clouds of ultracold plasmas. The original interpretation of these subharmonics as standing waves of plasma oscillations (the so-called Tonks-Dattner resonances) encounters a number of problems, such as the lack of adequate boundary conditions and incorrect dependence on the plasma temperature and the degree of neutrality. It is the aim of the present comment to mentio…
A numerical analysis of the self-interaction induced by a relativistic electron/positron beam in the presence of an intense external longitudinal magnetic field in plasmas is carried out. Within the context of the Plasma Wake Field theory in the overdense regime, the transverse beam-plasma dynamics is described by a quantumlike Zakharov system of equations in the long beam limit provided by the Thermal Wave Model. In the limiting case of beam spot size much larger than the plasma wavelength, the Zakharov system is reduced to a 2D Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation, where the trap potential well is…
We consider an application of variational-wavelet approach to nonlinear collective models of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy. We obtain fast convergent multiresolution representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons).
Recently, there has been a surge in the interest of non-equilibrium collective quantum models, where particle dispersion and spin are examples of effects taken into account. Here, we derive a kinetic plasma model con- taining fermion exchange effects. Exchange interactions are of great importance in many systems, and have no classical analogy. Our model therefore constitute a possible probe of collective quantum phenomena in new regimes. As an example, we consider the influence of exchange effect on low frequency dynamics, in partic- ular ion acoustic waves. Comparisons to related computationa…
We theoretically and numerically investigate the ion-acoustic features of collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream plasmas. When the electron distribution functions of two (stationary and moving) components overlap with each other at the phase velocities corresponding to the two resonant peaks of the ion-acoustic feature, the theoretical spectrum shows asymmetry because the rate of electron Landau damping is different for the two peaks. The results of numerical simulations agree well with the theoretical spectra. We also demonstrate the effect of a two-stream-type instability in the i…
We consider an application of modification of our variational-wavelet approach to some nonlinear collective model of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy related to modeling of propagation of intense charged particle beams in high-intensity accelerators and transport systems. We use fast convergent multiscale variational-wavelet representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons). In cont…
We study collective modes in a classical system of particles with repulsive inverse-power-law (IPL) interactions in the fluid phase, near the fluid-solid coexistence (IPL melts). The IPL exponent is varied from $n=10$ to $n=100$ to mimic the transition from moderately soft to hard-sphere-like interactions. We compare the longitudinal dispersion relations obtained using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations with those calculated using the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) and find that this simple theoretical approach becomes grossly inaccurate for $n\gtrsim 20$. Similarly, conventional expres…
We develop the statistical theory of the stimulated Brillouin backscatter (BSBS) instability of a spatially and temporally partially incoherent laser beam for laser fusion relevant plasma. We find a new regime of BSBS which has a much larger threshold than the classical threshold of a coherent beam in long-scale-length laser fusion plasma. Instability is collective because it does not depend on the dynamics of isolated speckles of laser intensity, but rather depends on averaged beam intensity. We identify convective and absolute instability regimes. Well above the incoherent threshold the cohe…
A model of dense plasmas relying on the superconfiguration approximation is presented. In each superconfiguration the nucleus is totally screened by the electrons in a Wigner-Seitz sphere (ion-sphere model). Superconfigurations of the same charge are grouped into ions. It is shown that boundary values of the wavefunctions play a crucial role in the form of the Virial theorem from which the pressure formula is derived. Finally, a condition is presented and discussed, which makes the ion-sphere model variational when bound electrons are treated quantum-mechanically and free electrons quasi-class…
New experimental results from the multimirror trap GOL-3 are presented. Deuterium plasma of $~10^21 m^-3$ density is heated by a high power relativistic electron beam (peak parameters are ~1 MeV, ~25 kA, ~8 $μ$s, ~120 kJ). Magnetic system of the facility is a 12-meter-long axisymmetrical solenoid with corrugated magnetic field, which consists of 55 cells with $B_max/B_min$=4.8/3.2 T. Collective plasma heating by the electron beam results in peak electron temperature ~2 keV. To this time the ions are also collectively heated by gradients of electron pressure in the cells of the trap. Ion temper…
To analyze nonidealities inherent to degenerate plasma, a quantum collective approach is developed. Thermodynamic functions of a system of partially degenerate electrons and strongly coupled ions are derived from first principles. The model takes into account the energy eigenvalues of i) the thermal translational particle motions, ii) the random collective electron and ion motions, and iii) the static Coulomb interaction energy of the electrons and ions in their oscillatory equilibrium positions. These statistical thermodynamic calculations lead to simple analytical expressions for internal en…
The self-consistent relaxation theory is employed to describe the collective ion dynamics in strongly coupled Yukawa classical one-component plasmas. The theory is applied to equilibrium states corresponding to intermediate screening regimes with appropriate values of the structure and coupling parameters. The information about the structure (the radial distribution function and the static structure factor) and the thermodynamics of the system is sufficient to describe collective dynamics over a wide range of spatial ranges, namely, from the extended hydrodynamic to the microscopic dynamics sc…
We present optical Thomson scattering measurements of electron density and temperature in a large-scale (~2 cm) exploding laser plasma produced by irradiating a solid target with a high energy (5-10 J) laser pulse at high repetition rate (1 Hz). The Thomson scattering diagnostic matches this high repetition rate. Unlike previous work performed in single shots at much higher energies, the instrument allows point measurements anywhere inside the plasma by automatically translating the scattering volume using motorized stages as the experiment is repeated at 1 Hz. Measured densities around 4$\tim…
We report on a novel non-invasive method to determine the normal mode frequencies of ion Coulomb crystals in traps based on the resonance enhanced collective coupling between the electronic states of the ions and an optical cavity field at the single photon level. Excitations of the normal modes are observed through a Doppler broadening of the resonance. An excellent agreement with the predictions of a zero-temperature uniformly charged liquid plasma model is found. The technique opens up for investigations of the heating and damping of cold plasma modes, as well as the coupling between them.
The ubiquity of high-energy tails in the charged particle velocity distribution functions observed in space plasmas suggests the existence of an underlying process responsible for taking a fraction of the charged particle population out of thermal equilibrium and redistributing it to suprathermal velocity and energy ranges. The present Letter focuses on a new and fundamental physical explanation for the origin of suprathermal electron distribution function in a highly collisional plasma. This process involves a newly discovered electrostatic bremsstrahlung emission that is effective in a plasm…
We develop a statistical theory of stimulated Brillouin backscatter (BSBS) of a spatially and temporally partially incoherent laser beam for laser fusion relevant plasma. We find a new collective regime of BSBS which has a much larger threshold than the classical threshold of a coherent beam in long-scale-length laser fusion plasma. We identify two contributions to BSBS convective instability increment. The first is collective with intensity threshold independent of the laser correlation time and controlled by diffraction. The second is independent of diffraction, it grows with increase of the…
In dusty (complex) plasmas, containing mesoscopic charged grains, the grain-grain interaction in many cases can be well described through a Yukawa potential. In this Review we summarize the basics of the computational and theoretical approaches capable of describing many-particle Yukawa systems in the liquid and solid phases and discuss the properties of the dynamical density and current correlation spectra of three- and two-dimensional strongly coupled Yukawa systems, generated by molecular dynamics simulations. We show details of the $ω(k)$ dispersion relations for the collective excitations…
For the successful generation of ion-beam-driven high energy density matter and heavy ion fusion energy, intense ion beams must be transported and focused onto a target with small spot size. One of the successful approaches to achieve this goal is to accelerate and transport intense ion charge bunches in an accelerator and then focus the charge bunches ballistically in a section of the accelerator that contains a neutralizing background plasma. This requires the ability to control space-charge effects during un-neutralized (non-neutral) beam transport in the accelerator and transport sections,…
Concepts underlying the Enskog kinetic theory of hard-spheres are applied to include short-range correlation effects in a model for transport coefficients of strongly coupled plasmas. The approach is based on an extension of the effective potential transport theory [S.~D.~Baalrud and J.~Daligault, Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 110}, 235001 (2013)] to include an exclusion radius surrounding individual charged particles that is associated with Coulomb repulsion. This is obtained by analogy with the finite size of hard spheres in Enskog's theory. Predictions for the self-diffusion and shear viscosity coe…
Dusty plasmas represent a powerful playground to study the collective dynamics of strongly coupled systems with important interdisciplinary connections to condensed matter physics. Due to the pure Yukawa repulsive interaction between dust particles, dusty plasmas do not display a traditional liquid-vapor phase transition, perfectly matching the definition of a supercritical fluid. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we verify the supercritical nature of dusty plasmas and reveal the existence of a dynamical liquid-like to gas-like crossover which perfectly matches the salient features of the …
