We study forward stimulated Raman emission from weakly fluorescent dye 4'-diethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DEST) in 1,2,dichloroethane solution excited by a 28 ps, 532 nm Nd: YAG laser. Neat 1, 2, dichloroethane emits the first Stokes line at 631 nm with a spectral width of 1.6 nm corresponding to a Raman shift of 2956 per cm. We observe reduction of spectral width with the addition of DEST in 1, 2, dichloroethane solution. The single pass conversion efficiency for forward Raman emission is as high as 20 percent in a 1 cm path length sample. The pulse duration of forward stimulated Raman emission measured by a third order autocorrelation technique is 10 ps in neat 1, 2, dichloroethane, whereas it is nearly 3 ps for 0.04 mM of DEST solution.
The random lasing (RL) emission of dyed vesicular polymeric films in diffusive regime of light propagation was investigated under helium temperature. It represents itself the coupling effect of stimulated emission and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Due to the effect a set of Raman lines reveal in RL spectrum. Distinguishing feature of the effect is the stimulated emission promotes the Raman lines revealing. Intensity of Raman lines have quadratic trend on pump intensity. Furthermore SRS in this condition has the more structured spectrum than spontaneous Raman one. It makes enable detection…
Absorption induced transparency is an optical phenomenon that occurs in metallic arrays of nanoholes when materials featuring narrow lines in their absorption spectra are deposited on top of it. First reported in the visible range, using dye lasers as cover materials, it has been described as transmission peaks unexpectedly close to the absorption energies of the dye laser. In this work, amplification of light is demonstrated in the active regime of absorption induced transparency. Amplification of stimulated emission can be achieved when the dye laser behaves as a gain material. Intense illum…
Dye-doped hybrid silicate/titanium nanofilms on the glass substrate in the structure of asymmetrical waveguides were studied as the laser system. The spatial and spectral features of laser oscillation of genuine and hollow waveguides were determined. Their lasing thresholds of a two-order difference of pumping power were identified. The calculated cutoff thickness for waveguides of 100 nm did not exceed their actual thickness of 300nm. The overall pattern of stimulated emission included two concurrent processes: one-mode waveguide lasing and the lateral beam emission of small divergence emanat…
We report on strong backward stimulated emission at 337 nm in Nitrogen gas pumped by circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm. A distinct dependence of the backward UV spectrum on pump laser polarization and intensity is observed, pointing to the occurrence of backward amplified spontaneous emission inside filaments. We attribute the population inversion to inelastic collision between the free electrons produced by the pump laser and neutral N2 molecules. The addition of Oxygen molecules is detrimental for the gain, reducing it to near threshold at atmospheric concentration.
We report evidence of beam cleanup during stimulated Raman scattering in silicon. An amplified near-diffraction-limited Stokes beam is obtained from a severely aberrated pump beam.
We simulate the transition from amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) to lasing in random systems with varying degrees of mode overlap. This is accomplished by solving the stochastic Maxwell-Bloch equations with the finite-difference time-domain method. Below lasing threshold, the continuous emission spectra are narrowed by frequency-dependent amplification. Our simulations reproduce the stochastic emission spikes in the spectra. Well-defined peaks, corresponding to the system resonances, emerge at higher pumping and are narrowed by stimulated emission before lasing takes place. Noise tends to …
Random lasing occurs as the result of a coherent optical feedback from multiple scattering centers. Here, we demonstrate that plasmonic gold nanostars are efficient light scattering centers, exhibiting strong field enhancement at their nanotips, which assists a very narrow bandwidth and highly amplified coherent random lasing with a low lasing threshold. First, by embedding plasmonic gold nanostars in a rhodamine 6G dye gain medium, we observe a series of very narrow random lasing peaks with full-width at half-maximum ~ 0.8 nm. In contrast, free rhodamine 6G dye molecules exhibit only a single…
Pulse compression processing based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in an optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Broadband microwave signal is electro-optically modulated onto the pump lightwave that is launched into one end of the fiber. Acoustic wave in the fiber inherits the amplitude and phase information of the pump lightwave and thus the coupling between the acoustic wave and pump lightwave leads to the auto-correlated process of the pump lightwave as well as the modulated microwave signal. Derivation of the SBS coupling equations shows that the short-pul…
Steady-state plasmonic lasing is studied theoretically for a system consisting of many dye molecules arranged regularly around a gold nano-sphere. A three-level model with realistic molecular dissipation is employed to analyze the performance as function of the pump field amplitude and number of molecules. Few molecules and moderate pumping produce a single narrow emission peak because the excited molecules transfer energy to a single dipole plasmon mode by amplified spontaneous emission. Under strong pumping, the single peak splits into broader and weaker emission peaks because two molecular …
We use amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and linear absorption spectroscopy to study the mechanisms of reversible photodegradation of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone (disperse orange 11-DO11) in solid poly(methyl methacrylate). Measurements as a function of intensity, concentration, and time suggest that ASE originates in a state (be it a tautomer or a vibronic level) that can form a dimer or some other aggregate upon relaxation, which through fluorescence quenching leads to degradation of the ASE signal. Whatever the degradation route, a high concentration of DO11 is required and the polymer…
We investigate the stimulated emission of superradiant atoms coupled to a waveguide induced by a coherent-state photon pulse. We provide an analytical result when a short $π$ pulse is incident, which shows that the atoms emit photons coherently into the output pulse, which remains a coherent state in the short pulse limit. An incident pulse is amplified in phase-preserving manner, where noise is added almost entirely in the phase direction in phase space. This property improves the ratio of intensity signal to noise after the amplification for sufficiently short pulses. This is a unique featur…
Stimulated Raman backscattering (RBS) of intense laser radiation confined by a single-mode plasma channel with a radial variation of plasma frequency greater than a homogeneous-plasma RBS bandwidth is characterized by a strong transverse localization of resonantly-driven electron plasma waves (EPW). The EPW localization reduces the peak growth rate of RBS and increases the amplification bandwidth. The continuum of non-bound modes of backscattered radiation shrinks the transverse field profile in a channel and increases the RBS growth rate. Solution of the initial-value problem shows that an el…
Stimulated emission in small-molecule organic films at a high dye concentration is generally hindered by fluorescence quenching, especially in the red region of the spectrum. Here we demonstrate the achievement of high net gains (up to 50 cm-1) around 640 nm in thermally evaporated non-doped films of 4-di(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)amino-4'-dicyanovinylbenzene, which makes this material suitable for green-light pumped single-mode organic lasers with low threshold and superior stability. Lasing effect is demonstrated in a DBR resonator configuration, as well as under the form of random lasing a…
The spatial resolution and fluorescence signal amplitude in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy is limited by the photostability of available fluorophores. Here, we show that negatively-charged silicon vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are promising fluorophores for STED microscopy, owing to their photostable, near-infrared emission and favorable photophysical properties. A home-built pulsed STED microscope was used to image shallow implanted SiV centers in bulk diamond at room temperature. The SiV stimulated emission cross section for 765-800 nm light is found to be (4.0 +/- 0.3) x…
Laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provide an additional degree of freedom and have found wide applications ranging from optical communications and optical manipulation to quantum information. The efficient generation and operation of ultra-intense OAM beams is a big challenge that has to be met, currently setting a limit to the potential applications of ultra-intense OAM beams in high-energy-density physics studies. Here, we theoretically and numerically demonstrate for the first time that a pump beam with a new OAM state is generated by coupling of the seed pulse with OAM La…
Semiconductor nanocrystals can be synthesized using inexpensive, scalable, solution-based techniques, and their utility as tunable light emitters has been demonstrated in various applications, including biolabeling and light-emitting devices. By contrast, the use of colloidal nanocrystals for optical amplification and lasing has been limited by the high input power densities that have been required. In this work, we show that colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) produce amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with pump-fluence thresholds as low 6 uJ/cm2 and gain as high as 600 cm-1, both a 4-fold impro…
Silicon-based light sources including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) for information transmission are urgently needed for developing monolithic integrated silicon photonics. Silicon doped by ion implantation with erbium ions (Er$^{3+}$) is considered a promising approach, but suffers from an extremely low quantum efficiency. Here we report an electrically pumped superlinear emission at 1.54 $μ$m from Er/O-doped silicon planar LEDs, which are produced by applying a new deep cooling process. Stimulated emission at room temperature is realized with a low threshold current of …
A photonics-enabled wavelet-like transform system, characterized by multi-resolution time-frequency analysis, is proposed based on a typical stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pump-probe setup using an optical nonlinear frequency-sweep signal. In the pump path, a continuous-wave optical signal is injected into an SBS medium to generate an SBS gain. In the probe path, a periodic nonlinear frequency-sweep optical signal with a time-varying chirp rate is generated, which is then modulated at a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) by the electrical signal under test (SUT). The optical signal from the M…
Developments in quantum technologies lead to new applications that require radiation sources with specific photon statistics. A widely used Poissonian statistics are easily produced by lasers; however, some applications require super- or sub-Poissonian statistics. Statistical properties of a light source are characterized by the second-order coherence function g^(2)(0). This function distinguishes stimulated radiation of lasers with g^(2)(0)=1 from light of other sources. For example, g^(2)(0)=2 for black-body radiation, and g^(2)(0)=0 for single-photon emission. One of the applications requir…
Fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy remain the most powerful tools for visualization with chemical and immunological specificity of labeled biomolecules, viruses, cellular organelles, and living cells in complex biological backgrounds. However, a common drawback of fluorescence labels is that their brightness is limited by optical saturation and photobleaching. As an alternative, plasmonic metal nanoparticles are very promising as optical labels with no photobleaching and low optical saturation at realistic exciting intensities as was demonstrated in photoacoustic and photothermal sensing, i…
Coherent sources exploiting the stimulated emission of non-equilibrium quantum systems, i.e. gain media, have proven indispensable for advancing fundamental research and engineering. The operating electromagnetic bands of such coherent sources have been continuously enriched for increasing demands.Nevertheless, for a single bench top coherent source, simultaneous generation of radiation in multiple bands, especially when the bands are widely separated, present formidable challenges with a single gain medium. Here, we propose a mechanism of simultaneously realizing the stimulated emission of ra…
