The basic character of diffusive transport in a magnetised plasma depends on what kind of transport is modelled. ExB turbulence under drift ordering has special characteristics: it is nearly incompressible, and it cannot lead to magnetic flux diffusion if it is electrostatic. The ExB velocity is also related to the Poynting energy flux. Under quasineutral dynamics, electric fields are not caused by transport of electric charge but by the requirement that the total current is divergence free. Consequences for well constructed computational transport models are discussed in the context of a general mean field analysis, which also yields several anomalous transfer mechanisms not normally considered by current models.

The slow collisional ExB ion drift characterized as the major instability mechanism of a poorly magnetized plasma column with an inward-directed radial electric field
Long wavelength plasma non-uniformities rotating in the azimuthal direction ("rotating spokes") have been observed in a number of experiments on Hall thrusters or magnetron discharges. We use a two-dimensional (2D), axial-azimuthal Particle-In-Cell Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC-MCC) model to study the formation of instabilities in a direct current (dc) magnetron discharge under conditions close to recent experiments. In spite of the simplified 2D geometry of the model, the simulations can reproduce the main features of the experimental results. At a given position above the cathode, correspondin…
The ExB electron drift instability, present in many plasma devices, is an important agent in cross-field particle transport. In presence of a resulting low frequency electrostatic wave, the motion of a charged particle becomes chaotic and generates a stochastic web in phase space. We define a scaling exponent to characterise transport in phase space and we show that the transport is anomalous, of super-diffusive type. Given the values of the model parameters, the trajectories stick to different kinds of islands in phase space, and their different sticking time power-law statistics generate suc…
In-situ, two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir probe measurements across a large part of the TCV divertor are reported in L-mode discharges with and without divertor baffles. This provides detailed insights into time averaged profiles, particle fluxes, and fluctuations behavior in different divertor regimes. The presence of the baffles is shown to substantially increase the divertor neutral pressure for a given upstream density and to facilitate the access to detachment, an effect that increases with plasma current. The detailed, 2D probe measurements allow for a divertor particle balance, including i…
This paper studies the turbulent kinetic energy ($k_\perp$) in 2D isothermal electrostatic interchange-dominated ExB drift turbulence in the scrape-off layer and its relation to particle transport. An evolution equation for the former is analytically derived from the underlying turbulence equations. Evaluating this equation shows that the dominant source for the turbulent kinetic energy is due to interchange drive, while the parallel current loss to the sheath constitutes the main sink. Perpendicular transport of the turbulent kinetic energy seems to play a minor role in the balance equation. …
It is shown that ions can be accelerated to MeV energy range in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field by the ExB mechanism of electrostatic waves. The acceleration occurs in discrete steps of duration being a small fraction the gyroperiod and can explain observations of ion energization to 10 keV at quasi-perpendicular shocks and to 100-1000 keV at quasi-parallel shocks. A general expression is provided for the maximum energy of ions accelerated in shocks of arbitrary configuration. The waves involved in the acceleration are related to three cross-field current-driven instabilities…
We derive a model equation describing electrostatic plasma turbulence in general (inhomogeneous and curved) magnetic fields by analysing the effect of curved geometry on the ion fluid polarization drift velocity. The derived nonlinear equation generalizes the Hasegawa-Mima equation governing drift wave turbulence in a straight homogeneous magnetic field, and may serve as a toy model for the description of turbulent systems such as the core of H-mode plasmas. The equation is most appropriate for configurations with a small ExB drift velocity divergence, or a mild spatial change in ExB drift vel…
Spacecraft data reveals a nonuniform ambipolar electric field transverse to the magnetic field in a thin magnetotail current sheet that leads to intense ExB velocity shear and non-gyrotropic particle distributions. The ExB drift far exceeds the diamagnetic drift and drives lower hybrid waves localized to the magnetic field reversal region, which is ideally suited for the anomalous dissipation necessary for reconnection. It also reveals substructures embedded in the current density, indicating the formation of a non-ideal current sheet.

We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. The implications of this novel mechanism on the transport and heating processes in burning plasmas are also discussed.

For a magnetised plasma in a straight magnetic guide field, we derive a set of four-dimensional kinetic equations, which can capture electromagnetic turbulence in the drift kinetic limit. To do so, we start from the gyrokinetic equations, employ a Laguerre decomposition in the perpendicular velocity direction, retain only the dominant gyroaverage contributions and only the first two Laguerre moments that source the electromagnetic fluctuations. The model conserves free energy, and can describe electromagnetic turbulence for a plasma at the transition between fluid and gyrokinetic regimes ($k_\…
