In a two-dimensional version of the modified Hasegawa-Wakatani (HW) model, which describes electrostatic resistive drift wave turbulence, the resistive coupling between vorticity and density does not act on the zonal components ($k_{y}=0$). It is therefore necessary to modify the HW model to treat the zonal components properly. The modified equations are solved numerically, and visualization and analysis of the solutions show generation of stable zonal flows, through conversion of turbulent kinetic energy, and the consequent turbulence and transport suppression. It is demonstrated by comparison that the modification is essential for generation of zonal flows.
We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. The implications of this novel mechanism on the transport and heating processes in burning plasmas are also discussed.
This study traces the emergence of sheared axial flow from collisional drift wave turbulence with broken symmetry in a linear plasma device---CSDX. As the density profile steepens, the axial Reynolds stress develops and drives a radially sheared axial flow that is parallel to the magnetic field. Results show that the non-diffusive piece of the Reynolds stress is driven by the density gradient and results from the spectral asymmetry of the turbulence and thus is dynamical in origin. Taken together, these findings constitute the first simultaneous demonstration of the causal link between the den…
For a magnetised plasma in a straight magnetic guide field, we derive a set of four-dimensional kinetic equations, which can capture electromagnetic turbulence in the drift kinetic limit. To do so, we start from the gyrokinetic equations, employ a Laguerre decomposition in the perpendicular velocity direction, retain only the dominant gyroaverage contributions and only the first two Laguerre moments that source the electromagnetic fluctuations. The model conserves free energy, and can describe electromagnetic turbulence for a plasma at the transition between fluid and gyrokinetic regimes ($k_\…
Detailed measurements of intrinsic axial flow generation parallel to the magnetic field in the controlled shear decorrelation experiment linear plasma device with no axial momentum input are presented and compared to theory. The results show a causal link from the density gradient to drift-wave turbulence with broken spectral symmetry and development of the axial mean parallel flow. As the density gradient steepens, the axial and azimuthal Reynolds stresses increase and radially sheared azimuthal and axial mean flows develop. A turbulent axial momentum balance analysis shows that the axial Rey…
A field theory and the associated structure-preserving geometric Particle-In-Cell (PIC) algorithm are developed to study low frequency electrostatic perturbations with fully kinetic ions and adiabatic electrons in magnetized plasmas. The algorithm is constructed by geometrically discretizing the field theory using discrete exterior calculus, high-order Whitney interpolation forms, and non-canonical Hamiltonian splitting method. The discretization preserves the non-canonical symplectic structure of the particle-field system, as well as the electromagnetic gauge symmetry. As a result, the algori…
Inhomogeneous drift-wave turbulence can be modeled as an effective plasma where drift waves act as quantumlike particles and the zonal-flow velocity serves as a collective field through which they interact. This effective plasma can be described by a Wigner-Moyal equation (WME), which generalizes the quasilinear wave-kinetic equation (WKE) to the full-wave regime, i.e., resolves the wavelength scale. Unlike waves governed by manifestly quantumlike equations, whose WMEs can be borrowed from quantum mechanics and are commonly known, drift waves have Hamiltonians very different from those of conv…
Recently the drift-reduced Landau fluid six-field turbulence model within the BOUT++ framework has been upgraded. In particular, this new model employs a new normalization, adds a volumetric flux-driven source option, the Landau fluid closure for parallel heat flux and a Laplacian inversion solver which is able to capture n=0 axisymmetric mode evolution in realistic tokamak configurations. These improvements substantially extended model's capability to study a wider range of tokamak edge phenomena, and are essential to build a fully self-consistent edge turbulence model capable of both transie…
This paper presents a detailed study on the controlled experimental observation of drift wave instabilities in an inhomogeneous Six pole cusp magnetic field generated by an in-house developed Multi-pole line cusp magnetic field device (MPD) [Patel et al. Rev. Sci. Instrum., 44, 726 (2018)]. The device is composed of six axially symmetric cusps and non-cusp (in between two consecutive magnets) regions. The observed instability has been investigated in one of these non-cusp regions by controlling the radial plasma density gradient with changing pole magnetic field which is a unique feature of th…
A lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) approach to the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CHM) model for adiabatic drift wave turbulence in magnetised plasmas, is implemented. The CHM-LBM model contains a barotropic equation of state for the potential, a force term including a cross-product analogous to the Coriolis force in quasigeostrophic models, and a density gradient source term. Expansion of the resulting lattice Boltzmann model equations leads to cold-ion fluid continuity and momentum equations, which resemble CHM dynamics under drift ordering. The resulting numerical solutions of standard test cases (mo…
The local intrinsic parallel current density driven by electron drift wave (DW) turbulence including electromagnetic (EM) effects is analytically studied. The scalings of the ratios of intrinsic current density driven by residual turbulent flux and by turbulent source to the bootstrap current density with electron density and temperature are predicted to be $T_e^{3/4}T_i/n_e$ and $T_eT_i/n_e$, respectively. Based on the typical parameters in DIII-D pedestal region, the local intrinsic current density driven by both the residual turbulent flux and the turbulent source is negligible. However, de…

The paper defines and discusses the concept of hidden drifts in two-dimensional turbulence. These are ordered components of the trajectories that average to zero and do not produce direct transport. Their effects appear in the evolution of the turbulence as a special type of fluxes, which consist of average motion of positive and negative fluctuations in opposite directions. We show that these fluxes have important nonlinear effects in turbulent fluids and in confined plasmas. In the first case, they determine the increase of the large scale vorticity and velocity at the expense of the small s…
Using fully kinetic 3D simulations, the reconnection dynamics of asymmetric current sheets are examined at the Earth's magnetopause. The plasma parameters are selected to model MMS magnetopause diffusion region crossings with guide fields of 0.1, 0.4, and 1 of the reconnecting magnetosheath field. In each case, strong drift-wave fluctuations are observed in the lower-hybrid frequency range at the steep density gradient across the magnetospheric separatrix. These fluctuations give rise to cross-field electron particle transport. In addition, this turbulent mixing leads to significantly enhanced…
The formation of zonal flows from inhomogeneous drift-wave (DW) turbulence is often described using statistical theories derived within the quasilinear approximation. However, this approximation neglects wave--wave collisions. Hence, some important effects such as the Batchelor--Kraichnan inverse-energy cascade are not captured within this approach. Here we derive a wave kinetic equation that includes a DW collision operator in the presence of zonal flows. Our derivation makes use of the Weyl calculus, the quasinormal statistical closure, and the geometrical-optics approximation. The obtained …
A nonlinear unified fluid model that describes the Equatorial Electrojet, including the Farley-Buneman and gradient-drift plasma instabilities, is defined and shown to be a noncanonical Hamiltonian system. Two geometric constants of motion for the model are obtained and shown to be Casimir invariants. A reformulation of the model shows the roles of the density-gradient scale-length ($L_n$) and the cross-field drift-velocity (${\upsilon}_E$) in controlling the dynamics of unstable modes in the growing, transition, and saturation phases of a simulation.
Hamiltonian Structure and Nonlinear Stability of Steady Solutions of the Generalized Hasegawa-Mima Equation for Drift Wave Turbulence in Curved Magnetic Fields
Wave-particle interaction in toroidal plasmas is an essential transport mechanism in drift wave instability-driven microturbulence. In tokamkas, different wave-particle resonance conditions have been found important for the energy and particle transport of multiple species in various drift wave turbulences. To confirm the transport mechanism for electrons and ions in tokamak drift-wave instabilities, the effect of wave-particle resonance on turbulent transport is studied using global gyrokinetic particle simulations of the plasma core ion temperature gradient (ITG) and collisionless trapped el…
