By altering the polarization, phase and amplitude at the exit pupil, the intensity distribution near the focal plane of a Solid Immersion Lens(SIL) system can be changed. We have studied how the resolution and focal depth changes for a few particular cases. It was seen that by impinging radial polarization on a SIL system, we may obtain a rotational symmetric z-component of the focused wavefront with spot size similar to that predicted by scalar theory. We also found that it was possible to 'play' with the the contributions from the homogeneous and inhomogeneous waves behind the SIL by changing the amplitude and phase distribution at the aperture.
In 2011, super-resolution imaging by microsphere superlens was emerged as a simple yet effective method to overcome the diffraction limit that limits the resolution of conventional lenses. Significant progress has since been made. Key advances including the development of scanning superlens system, metamaterial solid immersion lens (mSIL), super-resolution physics and bio-superlens will be discussed. Challenges and solutions are then discussed.

The solid immersion lens is a powerful optical tool that allows light entering material from air or vacuum to focus to a spot much smaller than the free-space wavelength. Conventionally, however, they rely on semispherical topographies and are non-planar and bulky, which limits their integration in many applications. Recently, there has been considerable interest in using planar structures, referred to as metasurfaces, to construct flat optical components for manipulating light in unusual ways. Here, we propose and demonstrate the concept of a planar immersion lens based on metasurfaces. The r…
In this Letter we present a Fresnel lens fabricated on the end of an optical fiber. The lens is fabricated using nanoimprint lithography of a functional high refractive index material, which is suitable for mass production. The main advantage of the presented Fresnel lens compared to a conventional fiber lens is its high refractive index (n=1.69), which enables efficient light focusing even inside other media such as water or adhesive. Measurement of the lens performance in an immersion liquid (n=1.51) shows a near diffraction limited focal spot of 810 nm in diameter at the 1/e2 intensity leve…
We present simulations of an efficient high numerical aperture solid immersion metalens concept for fluorescence microscopy. The technique exploits the preferential emission of interfacial dipoles into a high refractive index substrate combined with a metalens and a conventional tube lens for imaging them. We have thus simulated dipole emission and an all-dielectric metasurface on opposite sides of a high refractive index substrate. Our calculations predict dipole collection efficiencies of up to 87 percent. The simulated beam propagation through the imaging system shows excellent performance …
Efficiently collecting light emitted or scattered from nanoscale systems, which can be embedded in a high-index medium, is a challenge for fundamental spectroscopic studies and commercial applications of quantum dots, color centers, single molecules, plasmonic antennas, etc. Solid immersion lenses offer a powerful solution to increase the numerical aperture of the optical system, while being robust and compatible with cryogenic temperatures. However, they suffer from strong chromatic aberrations, limiting their applications to narrow-band excitation and emission spectral windows. Here, we desi…
Novel optical components based on metasurfaces (metalenses) offer a new methodology for microlens arrays. In particular, metalens arrays have the potential of being monolithically integrated with infrared focal plane arrays (IR FPAs) to increase the operating temperature and sensitivity of the latter. In this work, we demonstrate a new type of transmissive metalens that focuses the incident light (λ = 3-5 μm) on the detector plane after propagating through the substrate, i.e. solid-immersion type of focusing. The metalens is fabricated by etching the backside of the detector substrate material…
Recent efforts to define microscopic solid-immersion-lenses (SIL) by focused ion beam milling into diamond substrates that are registered to a preselected single photon emitter are summarized. We show how we determine the position of a single emitter with at least 100 nm lateral and 500 nm axial accuracy, and how the milling procedure is optimized. The characteristics of a single emitter, a Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) center in diamond, are measured before and after producing the SIL and compared with each other. A count rate of 1.0 million counts per second is achieved with a $[111]$ oriented NV ce…
The limited resolution of a conventional optical microscope stems from the fact that the subwavelength information of an object is carried by evanescent waves, which exponentially decays in space and cannot reach the imaging plane. We introduce here a metamaterial solid immersion lens (mSIL), which utilizes closely-packed high-index nanoparticles as a composite media to effectively convert and transport evanescent waves from near-field to far-field. About 20% of evanescent wave energy of an ideal point source can be directed into far-field by mSIL. This has led to the exceptional imaging perfo…
Among the wide-bandgap compound semiconductors, gallium nitride is the most widely available material due to its prevalence in the solid state lighting and high-speed/high-power electronics industries. It is now known that GaN is one of only a handful of materials to host color centers that emit quantum light at room temperature. In this paper, we report on a bright color center in a semi-polar gallium nitride substrate, emitting at room temperature in the near-infrared. We show that a hemispherical solid immersion lens, near index matched to the semiconductor, can be used to enhance the photo…
Light-field imaging facilitates the miniaturization of 3D cameras while it requires the extension of the depth-of-field (DoF) for practical applications such as endoscopy and intraoral scanning. Here we report a light-field camera (LFC) using solid immersion microlens arrays (siMLAs) for 3D biomedical imaging. The experimental results show that the focal length of MLAs is increased by 2.7 times and the transmittance is enhanced up to 6.9% by immersion in PDMS film. In particular, the f-number of siMLAs exceeds the limit of conventional MLAs fabricated by thermal reflow, resulting in a larger D…

We report on pulsed-laser induced generation of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond facilitated by a solid-immersion lens (SIL). The SIL enables laser writing at energies as low as 5.8 nJ per pulse and allows vacancies to be formed close to a diamond surface without inducing surface graphitization. We operate in the previously unexplored regime where lattice vacancies are created following tunneling breakdown rather than multiphoton ionization. We present three samples in which NV-center arrays were laser-written at distances between ~1 $μ$m and 40 $μ$m from a diamond surface, all present…
Broadband super-resolution imaging is important in optical field. To achieve super-resolution imaging, various lenses from superlens to solid immersion lens have been designed and fabricated in recent years. However, the imaging is unsatisfactory due to low work efficiency and narrow band. In this work, we propose a solid immersion square Maxwell's fish-eye lens which realizes broadband (7-16GHz) achromatic super-resolution imaging with full width at half maximum around 0.2 wavelength based on transformation optics at microwave frequencies. In addition, a super-resolution information transmiss…

Solid-state quantum emitters have emerged as robust single-photon sources and addressable spins: key components in rapidly developing quantum technologies for broadband magnetometry, biological sensing, and quantum information science. Performance in these applications, be it magnetometer sensitivity or quantum key generation rate, is limited by the number of photons detected. However, efficient collection of a quantum emitter's photoluminescence (PL) is challenging as its atomic scale necessitates diffraction-limited imaging with nanometer-precision alignment, oftentimes at cryogenic temperat…
We provide a critical review of the fundamental concepts of Kerr lens mode-locking (KLM), along with a detailed description of the experimental considerations involved in the realization of a mode-locked oscillator. In addition, we review recent developments that overcome inherent limitations and disadvantages in standard KLM lasers. Our review is aimed mainly at readers who wish to realize/maintain such an oscillator or for those who wish to better understand this major experimental tool.
Future quantum technology relies crucially on building quantum networks with high fidelity. To achieve this challenging goal, it is of utmost importance to connect single quantum systems in a way such that their emitted single-photons overlap with the highest possible degree of coherence. This requires perfect mode overlap of the emitted light of different emitters, which necessitates the use of single mode fibers. Here we present an advanced manufacturing approach to accomplish this task: we combine 3D printed complex micro-optics such as hemispherical and Weierstrass solid immersion lenses a…
Liquid dye lasers have long been considered as ideal tunable laser sources in the visible range but are bulky, expensive, and require a complex system for dye circulation. Here, we present a system that relies on a low-cost blue laser diode as the pump source and a sealed dye cell with no flowing circuitry, resulting in a device that combines the convenience and size of a solid-state device with the stability of a liquid organic laser. A very high photo-stability is obtained (up to 1.2 x 10$^9$ pulses or 12 days at 1 kHz), which is five orders of magnitude higher than a solid-state dye laser o…
High-purity single photon sources (SPS) that can operate at room temperature are highly desirable for a myriad of applications, including quantum photonics and quantum key distribution. In this work, we realise an ultra-bright solid-state SPS based on an atomic defect in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) integrated with a solid immersion lens (SIL). The SIL increases the source efficiency by a factor of six, and the integrated system is capable of producing over ten million single photons per second at room temperature. Our results are promising for practical applications of SPS in quantum communi…
Formation of a peculiar lasing pattern leading to a TEM00-like mode accompanied by a nonzero bright outer-ring emission (namely, a modified TEM00 mode) was observed in a 300-μm-thick LiNdP4O12 (LNP) laser with reflective flat end mirrors that was pumped with a laser diode whose focused spot size was larger than the lasing beam spot size determined by the thermal lens effect. The photon lifetimes of the laser oscillations were found to be greatly shortened to τ_{p} = 6.74 ps as compared with those in pure TEM00 mode operation, while the fluorescence lifetime was τ= 130 μs. The formation of the …
We investigate the possibility of determining the mass distribution of a gravitational lens via lensing observations. We consider an extended, compact gravitational lens, representing its static external gravitational potential via an infinite set of symmetric trace free (STF) multipole moments. Within the wave-optical treatment, we evaluate the caustics formed in the lens's point spread function (PSF). We study the only quantity that is available in astronomical lensing observations: the image of that PSF formed by an imaging telescope. This observable may be used to recover some physical cha…
