Effect of charge-transfer recombination for positronium (Ps) scattering is studied on Ps-H system using coupled-channel formalism considering a new rearrangement channel Ps+H --> e^+ + H^- and exchange.
The correlation and continuum effects introduced by this charge-transfer channel result to substantial convergence to the low energy scattering parameters. Effects on scattering length, PsH binding energy, and low-energy (0-10 eV) phase-shifts and cross sections are evaluated and H$^-$ formation cross sections are reported from above the threshold (6.438 eV) to 100 eV.
A long-standing problem to account for the electron-positron annihilation in positron Hydrogen scattering above the Positronium formation threshold has been resolved by the use of the three-body Faddeev formalism. The multichannel three-body theory for scattering states in presence of a complex absorbing potential is developed in order to compute the direct $e^+ e^-$ annihilation amplitude, the amplitude of Positronium formation and respective cross sections. A number of $e^+ e^-$ direct annihilation cross sections and Positronium formation cross sections in the energy gap between Ps$(1s)$ and…
The importance of the excited states of Positronium (Ps) in the formation cross sections(both differential and total) of the negative hydrogen ion (H^-) are investigated theoretically for the charge transfer reaction, Ps (n = 1, 2) + H --> e+ + H^- for a wide range of incident energies (e. g., threshold - 500 eV) . The calculations are performed in the frame work of a qualitative model, the post collisional Coulomb Modified Eikonal Approximation (CMEA) . A comparative study is also made between the capture from ground and excited states of the Ps. The present CMEA model takes account of higher…

Hyperspherical close-coupling method is used to calculate the elastic, positronium formation and excitation cross sections for positron collisions with atomic hydrogen at energies below the H(n=4) threshold for the J=2 partial wave. The resonances below each inelastic threshold are also analyzed. The adiabatic hyperspherical potential curves are used to identify the nature of these resonances.

The collision between a positronium (Ps) and a muonium (Mu) is studied for the first time using the static-exchange model and considering the system as a four-center Coulomb problem in the center of mass frame. An exact analysis is made to find the s-wave elastic phase-shifts, the scattering-lengths for both singlet and triplet channels, the integrated/total elastic cross section and the quenching cross section due to ortho to para conversion of Ps and the conversion ratio.
The positron-hydrogen atom scattering system is considered within the S-wave model. Convergence in the elastic scattering, excitation, ionization, and positronium formation channels is studied as a function of the number and type of states used to expand the total wave function. It is found that all unphysical resonances disappear only if near-complete pseudostate expansions are applied to both the atomic and positronium centers.
We present a convergent variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by hydrogen atom in S wave. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are needed for achieving convergence. We report convergent results for scattering lengths in atomic units for both singlet ($=3.49\pm 0.20$) and triplet ($=2.46\pm 0.10$) states.
The present theoretical work addresses the study of the formation of a positive Antihydrogen ion in a single charge exchange reaction where a positronium ( ground or excited state) interacts with a ground state anti-hydrogen atom, being embedded in a dense Debye plasma. The calculations are carried out in the frame work of a Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The result shows that Ps(3S) is the most interesting state to enhance the anti H^+ production at the energy close to the reaction threshold. Regarding the Debye screening, it may be inferred that in lower energy regime, the screenin…

Scattering of positronium (Ps) by helium atom has been investigated in a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model including Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. Specifically, we report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering and target-elastic Ps excitations. We also present results for total and different partial cross sections and compare them with experiment and other calculations.
The dynamics of the complete breakup process in an Ortho Ps - He+ system including electron loss to the continuum (ELC) is studied where both the projectile and the target get ionized. The process is essentially a four body problem and the present model takes account of the two centre effect on the electron ejected from the Ps atom which is crucial for a proper description of the ELC phenomena. The calculations are performed in the framework of Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The exchange effect between the target and the projectile electron is taken into account in a consistent manne…
The elastic collision between two ortho-positronium (e.g. S=1) atoms is studied using an ab-initio static-exchange model (SEM) in the center of mass (CM) frame considering the system as a four-body Coulomb problem where all the Coulomb interaction terms in the direct and exchange channels are treated exactly. A coupled-channel methodology in momentum space is used to solve Lippman-Schwinger equation following the integral approach. A new SEM code is developed in which the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) scattering amplitude acts as input to derive the SEM amplitude adapting the partial wave analysis. Th…
We calculate elastic scattering of positronium (Ps) by the Xe atom using the recently developed pseudopotential method [I. I. Fabrikant and G. F. Gribakin, Phys. Rev. A 90, 052717 (2014)] and review general features of Ps scattering from heavier rare-gas atoms: Ar, Kr, and Xe. The total scattering cross section is dominated by two contributions: elastic scattering and Ps ionization (breakup). To calculate the Ps ionization cross sections we use the binary-encounter method for Ps collisions with an atomic target. Our results for the ionization cross section agree well with previous calculations…
We report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering, target-elastic Ps excitations and target-inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. The present model yields a singlet Ps-H S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV. We also study the effect of the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme…
We determine the gyromagnetic factor of the positronium ion, a three-body system consisting of two electrons and a positron, including first relativistic corrections. We find that the g-factor is modified by a term -0.51(1)alpha^2, exceeding 15 times the alpha^2 correction for a free electron. We compare this effect with analogous results found previously in atomic positronium and in hydrogen-like ions.
Positronium-hydrogen (Ps-H) scattering is of interest, as it is a fundamental four-body Coulomb problem. We have investigated low-energy Ps-H scattering below the Ps(n=2) excitation threshold using the Kohn variational method and variants of the method with a trial wavefunction that includes highly correlated Hylleraas-type short-range terms. We give an elegant formalism that combines all Kohn-type variational methods into a single form. Along with this, we have also developed a general formalism for Kohn-type matrix elements that allows us to evaluate arbitrary partial waves with a single cod…
We present a variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by helium atom in S wave and apply it to the calculation of the scattering length. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are used in this calculation. We report numerical result for the scattering length in atomic unit: $(1.0\pm 0.1)a_0$. This corresponds to a zero-energy elastic cross section of $(4.0\pm 0.8)πa_0^2$.
A problem to account for the direct electron-positron annihilation in positron-hydrogen scattering above the positronium formation threshold has been resolved within the time independent formalism. The generalization of the optical theorem is derived for the case when an absorption potential is present in the Hamiltonian. With this theorem the annihilation cross section is fully determined by scattering amplitudes. This allows us to separate out analytically the contribution of the positronium formation from the overall annihilation cross section. The rest is determined as the direct annihilat…
Scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by cesium and rubidium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 5.057 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Rb system and at 5.067 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Cs system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.3 eV of width 0.4 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.4 eV in both systems. The pronounced P- and D-wave resonances in these systems lead to easil…
The formulation of a suitable nonlocal model potential for electron exchange is presented, checked with electron-hydrogen and electron-helium scattering, and applied to the study of elastic and inelastic scattering and ionization of ortho positronium (Ps) by helium. The elastic scattering and the $n = 2$ excitations of Ps are investigated using a three-Ps-state close-coupling approximation. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of Ps atom are treated in the framework of Born approximation with present exchange. Calculations are reported of phase shifts, and elastic, Ps-excitation, a…
The production of anti-hydrogen ions in the GBAR experiment will occur via a two step charge exchange process. In a first reaction, the anti-protons from the ELENA ring at CERN will capture a positron from a positronium target producing anti-hydrogen atoms. Those interacting in the same positronium target will produce in a second step anti-hydrogen ions. This results in a dependence for the anti-ions production rate which is roughly proportional to the positronium density squared. We present a scheme to increase the anti-ions production rate in the GBAR experiment by tailoring the anti-proton …
The confined variational method in conjunction with the orthogonalizing pseudo-potential method and the stabilization method is used to study the low energy elastic scattering between two spin-polarized metastable positronium Ps(2\,$^{3}\!S_1$) atoms. Explicitly correlated Gaussian basis functions are adopted to properly describe the complicated Coulomb interaction among the four charged particles. The calculated $s$-wave scattering length ($\approx8.5\,a_0$) is positive, indicating the possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of fully spin-polarized $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ a…
The positronium molecule (Ps$_2$) has not been experimentally observed yet because its tiny (4.5 eV) binding energy cannot be detected when the molecule annihilates by emitting two photons with energy of 0.51 MeV each. It is shown in this paper that the electric dipole transition between the recently found L=1 excited-state and the L=0 ground-state with its characteristic photon energy of 4.94 eV is a clear signature of the existence of the positronium molecule and the possibility of its experimental observation is realistic. The probability of this transition is about 17 % of the total decay …

The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of the Ps atom are calculated using the first Born approximation. Calculations are reported of scattering lengths, phase shifts, elastic, Ps- and H-excitation, and total cross sections. Remarkable correlations are observed between the S-wave Ps-H binding energy and the singlet scattering length, effective range…
Exploiting an approach similar to the R-matrix theory, the diffusion Monte Carlo method is employed to compute phase shifts and threshold cross sections for the elastic scattering of o-positronium off light atoms. Results are obtained for Ps-H and Ps-He as representative cases of open and closed shell targets. The method allows for an exact treatment of both correlation and exchange interactions, and represents the most promising approach to deal with these effects in more complicated targets. In particular the Ps-He threshold cross section, computed in a many body framework for the first time…
A many-body-theory approach has been developed to study positronium-atom interactions. As first applications, we calculate the elastic scattering and momentum-transfer cross sections and the pickoff annihilation rate $^1Z_\text{eff}$ for Ps collisions with He and Ne. The cross section for He is in agreement with previous coupled-state calculations, and the momentum-transfer cross section for Ne agrees with available experimental data. $^1Z_\text{eff}$ is found to be 0.13 and 0.26 for He and Ne, respectively, in excellent agreement with the measured values.
Scattering of positronium (Ps) by sodium and potassium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential fitted to reproduce accurate theoretical results for PsNa and PsK binding energies. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 4.58 eV of width 0.002 eV in the Ps-Na system and at 4.77 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-K system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.07 eV of width 0.3 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.3 eV in both sys…
Low-energy elastic and inelastic scattering in the Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel is treated in a four-body hyperspherical coordinate calculation. Adiabatic potentials are calculated for triplet-triplet, singlet-singlet, and singlet-triplet spin symmetries in the spin representation of coupled electrons and coupled positrons, with total angular momentum $L=0$ and parity equal to $+1$. The s-wave scattering lengths for the asymptotic Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel are calculated for each spin configuration. Results obtained for the s-wave scattering lengths are $a_{\mathrm{TT}}=$~$7.3(2)a_0-i0.02(1)a_0$,…
Fragmentation of ground state ortho Positronium (Ps) in collision with Li ion (Li+) is studied in the framework of post collisional Coulomb distorted eikonal approximation (CDEA) for the target elastic case . The present model takes account of the two center effect on the ejected e which is crucial for a proper description of the projectile ionization involving an ionic target. Both the fully differential (TDCS) and the doubly differential (DDCS) cross sections (energy spectra) are investigated at intermediate and high incident energies. A broad distinct Electron loss peak (ELP) centered aroun…
We investigate positron scattering upon endohedrals and compare it with electron-endohedral scattering. We show that the polarization of the fullerene shell considerably alters the polarization potential of an atom, stuffed inside a fullerene. This essentially affects both the positron and electron elastic scattering phases as well as corresponding cross-sections. Of great importance is also the interaction between the incoming positron and the target electrons that leads to formation the virtual positronium. We illustrate the general trend by concrete examples of positron and electron scatter…
A simple locally accurate uniform approximation for the nodeless wavefunction is constructed for a {\it neutral} system of two Coulomb charges of different masses $(-q,m_1)$ and $(q,m_2)$ at rest in a constant uniform magnetic field for the states of positive and negative parity, ${(1s_0)}$ and ${(2p_0)}$, respectively. It is shown that by keeping the mass and charge of one of the bodies fixed, all systems with different second body masses are related. This allows one to consider the second body as infinitely-massive and to take such a system as basic. Three physical systems are considered in …
Very low-energy scattering of orthopositronium by helium has been investigated for simultaneous study of elastic cross section and pick-off quenching rate using a model exchange potential. The present calculational scheme, while agrees with the measured cross section of Skalsey et al, reproduces successfully the parameter $^ 1Z_{\makebox{eff}}$, the effective number of electrons per atom in a singlet state relative to the positron. Together with the fact that this model potential also leads to an agreement with measured medium energy cross sections of this system, this study seems to resolve t…
We have completed the calculation of pure-recoil corrections of order $(Z α)^6$ to Coulombic bound states of two spin-1/2 fermions without approximation in the particle masses. Our result applies to systems of arbitrary mass ratio such as muonium and positronium, and also hydrogen and muonic hydrogen (with the neglect of proton structure effects). We have shown how the two-loop master integrals that occur in the relativistic region can be computed in analytic form, and suggest that the same method can be applied to the three-loop integrals that would be present in a calculation of order $(Z α)…
We develop {\it ab initio} relativistic QED theory for elastic electron scattering on hydrogen-like highly charged ions for impact energies where, in addition to direct (Coulomb) scattering, the process can also proceed via formation and consequent Auger decay of autoionizing states of the corresponding helium-like ions. Even so the primary goal of the theory is to treat electron scattering on highly charged ions, a comparison with experiment shows that it can also be applied for relatively light ions covering thus a very broad range of the scattering systems. Using the theory we performed cal…
We theoretically study the positron elastic scattering by an atom with a multielectron semifilled subshell in its structure. The positron scattering by the Mn($...3d^{5}4s^{2}$,$^{6}S)$ atom with a $3d^{5}$ semifilled subshell ($e^{+}+Mn$ scattering) is chosen as a case study. We account for both the electron correlation and the formation of a $e^{+}+e^{-}$ virtual positronium (Ps) in the intermediate states of the $e^{+}+Mn$ system. Electron correlation is taken into account in the framework of the self-energy part of the scattering positron Green function generalized for the application to s…

The confined variational method is applied to investigate the low-energy elastic scattering of ortho-positronium from $\text{H}_2$ by first-principles quantum mechanics. Describing the correlation effect with explicitly correlated Gaussians, we obtain accurate $S$-wave phase shifts and pick-off annihilation parameters for different incident momenta. By a least-squares fit of the data to the effective-range theory, we determine the $S$-wave scattering length, $A_s=2.06a_0$, and the zero-energy value of the pick-off annihilation parameter, $^1\!\text{Z}_\text{eff}=0.1858$. The obtained $^1\!\tex…
Positron scattering and annihilation on noble gas atoms below the positronium formation threshold is studied ab initio using many-body theory methods. The many-body theory provides a near-complete understanding of the positron-noble-gas-atom system at these energies and yields accurate numerical results. It accounts for positron-atom and electron-positron correlations, e.g., polarization of the atom by the incident positron and the non-perturbative process of virtual positronium formation. These correlations have a large effect on the scattering dynamics and result in a strong enhancement of t…
We study the proton-hydrogen collision in the energy range from 0 to 5 K where the hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom is important. The proper multichannel treatment of the hyperfine structure is found to be crucial at cold temperatures compared to the elastic approximation used for higher temperatures. Both elastic and hyperfine-changing inelastic processes are investigated using the newly developed multichannel quantum-defect theory (MQDT) as well as the traditional coupled-channel numerical method. Cross section results from the two methods coincide well throughout the energy range. T…
This paper continues the analysis of bound quantum systems started in (T. Yarman, A.L. Kholmetskii and O.V. Missevitch. Going from classical to quantum description of bound charged particles. Part 1: basic concepts and assertions), based on a novel approach, involving the requirement of energy-momentum conservation for the bound electromagnetic (EM) field, when the EM radiation is forbidden. It has been shown that the modified expression for the energy levels of hydrogenic atoms within such a pure bound field theory (PBFT) provides the same gross and fine structure of energy levels, like in th…
The best 3-channel projectile-inelastic [H(1s)+Ps(1s,2s,2p)] close-coupling approximation (CCA) is performed for positronium (Ps) and hydrogen (H) collision considering both the atoms in ground states at the incident channel. The s-wave elastic phase shifts and cross sections in the singlet and triplet channels and the total (or integrated) cross section are studied below inelastic threshold. Resonances in singlet channel using 2-channel and 3-channel projectile-inelastic CCAs confirm earlier prediction [1]. A resonance in triplet channel using 3-channel projectile-inelastic CCA is a new addit…

Low-energy muon-transfer cross sections and rates in collisions of muonic atoms with hydrogen isotopes are calculated using a six-state close-coupling approximation to coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type equations. In the muonic case satisfactory results are obtained for all hydrogen isotopes and the experimentaly observed strong isotopic dependence of transfer rates is also reproduced. A comparison with results of other theoretical and available experimental works is presented. The present model also leads to good transfer cross sections in the well-understood problem of antihydrogen formation…
The S-wave model of electron-hydrogen scattering is evaluated using the convergent close-coupling method with an emphasis on scattering from excited states including an initial state from the target continuum. Convergence is found for discrete excitations and the elastic free-free transition. The latter is particularly interesting given the corresponding potential matrix elements are divergent.
The effect of the electron's anomalous magnetic moment on the relativistic electronic dressing for the process of electron-hydrogen atom elastic collisions is investigated. We consider a laser field with circular polarization and various electric field strengths. The Dirac-Volkov states taking into account this anomaly are used to describe the process in the first order of perturbation theory. The correlation between the terms coming from this anomaly and the electric field strength gives rise to new results, namely the strong dependence of the spinor part of the differential cross section (DC…
Diagrammatic many-body theory is used to calculate the scattering phase shifts, normalized annihilation rates $Z_{\rm eff}$ and annihilation gamma spectra for positron collisions with the hydrogen-like ions He$^+$, Li$^{2+}$, B$^{4+}$ and F$^{8+}$. Short-range electron-positron correlations and longer-range positron-ion correlations are accounted for by evaluating nonlocal corrections to the annihilation vertex and the exact positron self-energy. The numerical calculation of the many-body theory diagrams is performed using B-spline basis sets. To elucidate the rôle of the positron-ion repulsio…
Using a complex model potential, we have calculated the total, integrated elastic, momentum transfer, absorption, and differential cross sections for positrons scattered from molecular hydrogen. The widely available software package GAUSSIAN is used to generate the radial electronic charge density of the molecule which is used to produce the interaction potentials. The quasifree absorption potential, previously developed and used for positron-atom scattering, is extended to positron scattering from molecular targets. It is shown that this model potential approach produces accurate results even…
Two-photon free-free transitions in elastic laser-assisted electron-hydrogen collisions are studied in the domain of high scattering energies and low or moderate field intensities, in the third order of perturbation theory, taking into account all the involved Feynman diagrams. Based on the analytical expressions of the transition amplitudes, the differential cross sections for two-photon absorption/emission are computed at impact energy $E_i=100$ eV. The effect of field polarizations on the angular distribution and on the frequency dependence of the differential cross section is analyzed.
We use the difference between theory and experiment for energy intervals in simple atomic systems (hydrogen, muonium, positronium and deuteron) to find limits on the size of extra space dimensions in the Arkani-Hamed - Dimopoulos - Dvali model for gravitation potential on short distances. As an additional experimental fact we use absence of the small size gravitational bound states of elementary particles. We demonstrate that the perturbation theory approach does not work and more reliable results are obtained by solving the Dirac equations for an electron in Coulomb and gravitational fields. …
We perform dynamical calculations of direct muon-transfer rates from thermalized muonic hydrogen isotopes to bare nuclei C$^{6+}$ and O$^{8+}$. For these three-body charge-transfer reactions with Coulomb interaction in the final state we use two-component integro-differential Faddeev-Hahn-type equations in configuration space using close-coupling approximation. To take into account the high polarizability of the muonic hydrogen due to the large charge of the incident nuclei, a polarization potential is included in the elastic channel. The large final-state Coulomb interaction is explicitly inc…
The previously derived vortex atomic form factor, which is directly related to a differential reaction cross section, is used to analyze the elastic scattering of twisted vortex photons with a hydrogenic atomic target. The vortex atomic form factor is expressed in a unified spherical basis and implemented in a MatLab code that numerically evaluates it using globally adaptive quadrature. The results of this code show the influence of variation in the photon wavelength, Rayleigh range, and scattering angle on differential reaction cross sections and the twist factor, which measures the impact of…
