It is shown that the recently observed Delta J = 2 staggering effect (i.e. the relative displacement of the levels with angular momenta J, J+4, J+8, ..., relatively to the levels with angular momenta J+2, J+6, J+10, ...) seen in superdeformed nuclear bands is also occurring in certain electronically excited rotational bands of diatomic molecules (YD, CrD, CrH, CoH), in which it is attributed to interband interactions (bandcrossings). In addition, the Delta J = 1 staggering effect (i.e. the relative displacement of the levels with even angular momentum J with respect to the levels of the same band with odd J) is studied in molecular bands free from Delta J = 2 staggering (i.e. free from interband interactions/bandcrossings). Bands of YD offer evidence for the absence of any Delta J = 1 staggering effect due to the disparity of nuclear masses, while bands of sextet electronic states of CrD demonstrate that Delta J = 1 staggering is a sensitive probe of deviations from rotational behaviour, due in this particular case to the spin-rotation and spin-spin interactions.
Pure, highly nuclear-spin-polarized molecules have only been produced with molecular beam-separation methods, with production rates up to ${\sim}3{\times}10^{12}$ s$^{-1}$. Here, we propose the production of spin-polarized molecular photofragments from the IR-excitation and photodissociation of molecular beams, with production rates approaching the tabletop-IR-laser photon fluxes of $10^{21}$ s$^{-1}$. We give details on the production of spin-polarized molecular hydrogen and water isotopes, from formaldehyde and formic acid beams, respectively. Macroscopic quantities of these molecules are im…
Molecular polaritons have become an emerging platform for remotely controlling molecular properties through strong light-matter interactions. Herein, a semiclassical approach is developed for describing molecular polaritons by self-consistently propagating the real-time dynamics of classical cavity modes and a quantum molecular subsystem described by the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) method, where electrons and specified nuclei are treated quantum mechanically on the same level. This semiclassical real-time NEO approach provides a unified description of electronic and vibrational strong cou…
Nuclear quantum effects are important in a variety of chemical and biological processes. The constrained nuclear-electronic orbital density functional theory (cNEO-DFT) has been developed to include nuclear quantum effects in energy surfaces. Herein we develop the analytic Hessian for cNEO-DFT energy with respect to the change of nuclear (expectation) positions, which can be used to characterize stationary points on energy surfaces and compute molecular vibrational frequencies. This is achieved by constructing and solving the multicomponent cNEO coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham (cNEO-CPKS) equation…
The accurate incorporation of nuclear quantum effects in large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remains a significant challenge. Recently, we combined constrained nuclear-electronic orbital (CNEO) theory with classical MD and obtained a new approach (CNEO-MD) that can accurately and efficiently incorporate nuclear quantum effects into classical simulations. In this Letter, we provide the theoretical foundation for CNEO-MD by developing an alternative formulation of the equations of motion for MD. In this new formulation, the expectation values of quantum nuclear positions evolve class…
The weak interaction does not conserve parity, which is apparent in many nuclear and atomic phenomena. However, thus far, parity nonconservation has not been observed in molecules. Here we consider nuclear-spin-dependent parity nonconserving contributions to the molecular Hamiltonian. These contributions give rise to a parity nonconserving indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling which can be distinguished from parity conserving interactions in molecules of appropriate symmetry, including diatomic molecules. We estimate the magnitude of the coupling, taking into account relativistic corrections. Fi…
We explore the effects of spin-orbit coupling on nuclear wave packet motion near an out-of-equilibrium molecular junction, where nonzero Berry curvature emerges as the antisymmetric part of the electronic friction tensor. The existence of nonzero Berry curvature mandates that different nuclear wave packets (associated with different electronic spin states) experience different nuclear Berry curvatures, i.e. different pseudo-magnetic fields. Furthermore, for a generic, two-orbital two-lead model (representing the simplest molecular junction), we report significant spin polarization of the {\em …
We present in detail and validate an effective Monte Carlo approach for the calculation of the nuclear vibrational densities via integration of molecular eigenfunctions that we have preliminary employed to calculate the densities of the ground and the excited OH stretch vibrational states in protonated glycine molecule [C. Aieta et. al. Nat. Commun. 11, 4348 (2020)]. Here, we first validate and discuss in detail the features of the method on a benchmark water molecule. Then, we apply it to calculate on-the-fly the ab initio anharmonic nuclear densities in correspondence of the fundamental tran…
Full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) is a state-of-the-art stochastic electronic structure method, providing a methodology to compute FCI-level state energies of molecular systems within a quantum chemical basis. However, especially to probe {\em dynamics} at the FCIQMC level, it is necessary to devise more efficient schemes to produce nuclear forces and potential energy surfaces (PES) from FCIQMC. In this work, we derive the general formula for nuclear force from FCIQMC, and clarify different contributions of the total force. This method to obtain FCIQMC forces eliminat…
We present quantum electron transport theory that incorporates dynamical effects of motion of atoms on electrode-molecule interfaces in the calculations of the electric current. The theory is based on non-equilibrium Green's functions. We separate time scales in the Green's functions on fast relative time and slow central time. The derivative with respect to the central time serves as a small parameter in the theory. We solve the real-time Kadanoff-Baym equations for molecular Green's functions using Wigner representation and keep terms up to the second order with respect to the central time d…
The energies of molecular excited states arise as solutions to the electronic Schrödinger equation and are often compared to experiment. At the same time, nuclear quantum motion is known to be important and to induce a red-shift of excited state energies. However, it is thus far unclear whether incorporating nuclear quantum motion in molecular excited state calculations leads to a systematic improvement of their predictive accuracy, making further investigation necessary. Here we present such an investigation by employing two first-principles methods for capturing the effect of quantum fluctua…
We introduce a pseudo-mass parameterized Schrödinger-like alchemical equation which contains nuclear charges as variables, treating nuclear charges, nuclear coordinates and electronic coordinates on the equal footing. The eigenfunctions of the alchemical equation are the wave functions of nuclear charges, just like conventional wave functions are of coordinates. A mathematical definition of alchemical function space is given to hold the ''nuclear charge wave function''. The geometric phase of alchemical dynamics and alchemical phase space are also derived. For hydrogen-like ion, the alchemical…
We present a simple and accurate computational method, which facilitates ab-initio path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, where the quantum mechanical nature of the nuclei is explicitly taken into account, at essentially no additional computational cost in comparison to the corresponding calculation using classical nuclei. The predictive power of the proposed quantum ring-polymer contraction method is demonstrated by computing various static and dynamic properties of liquid water at ambient conditions. This development permits to routinely include nuclear quantum effects in ab-initio mo…
The weak interaction does not conserve parity and therefore induces energy shifts in chiral enantiomers that should in principle be detectable in molecular spectra. Unfortunately, the magnitude of the expected shifts are small and in spectra of a mixture of enantiomers, the energy shifts are not resolvable. We propose a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment in which we titrate the chirality (enantiomeric excess) of a solvent and measure the diasteriomeric splitting in the spectra of a chiral solute in order to search for an anomalous offset due to parity nonconservation (PNC). We present…
Molecular rotation, vibration, internal rotation, isomerization, tunneling, intermolecular dynamics of weakly and strongly interacting systems, intra-to-inter-molecular energy transfer, hindered rotation and hindered translation over surfaces are important types of molecular motions. Their fundamentally correct and detailed description can be obtained by solving the nuclear Schrödinger equation on a potential energy surface. Many of the chemically interesting processes involve quantum nuclear motions which are `delocalized' over multiple potential energy wells. These `large-amplitude' motions …

As an extension of two-level quantum bits (qubits), multilevel systems, so-called qudits, where d represents the Hilbert space dimension, have been predicted to reduce the number of iterations in quantum computation algorithms. This has been tested in the well-known [TbPc2]0 SMM, which allowed the implementation of the Grover algorithm in a single molecular unit. In the quest for molecular systems possessing an increased number of accessible nuclear spin states, we explore herein a dimeric Tb2-SMM via single crystal μ-SQUID measurements at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe ferromagnetic inte…
Nuclear quantum effects (NQE) tend to generate delocalized molecular dynamics due to the inclusion of the zero point energy and its coupling with the anharmonicities in interatomic interactions. Here, we present evidence that NQE often enhance electronic interactions and, in turn, can result in dynamical molecular stabilization at finite temperature. The underlying physical mechanism promoted by NQE depends on the particular interaction under consideration. First, the effective reduction of interatomic distances between functional groups within a molecule can enhance the $n\toπ^*$ interaction …
Motivated by recent synthetic and theoretical progress we consider magnetism in crystals of multi-nuclear organometallic complexes. We calculate the Heisenberg symmetric exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange. We show how, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the interplay of electronic correlations and quantum interference leads to a quasi-one dimensional effective spin model in a typical tri-nuclear complex, Mo$_3$S$_7$(dmit)$_3$, despite its underlying three dimensional band structure. We show that both intra- and inter-molecular spin-orbit coupling can cause an eff…
Here we demonstrate that a term in the nuclear spin Hamiltonian, the antisymmetric \textit{J}-coupling, is fundamentally connected to molecular chirality. We propose and simulate a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment to observe this interaction and differentiate between enantiomers without adding any additional chiral agent to the sample. The antisymmetric \textit{J}-coupling may be observed in the presence of molecular orientation by an external electric field. The opposite parity of the antisymmetric coupling tensor and the molecular electric dipole moment yields a sign change of the…
The Born-Oppenheimer electronic wavefunction $Φ_R^{BO}(r)$ picks up a topological phase factor $\pm 1$, a special case of Berry phase, when it is transported around a conical intersection of two adiabatic potential energy surfaces in $R$-space. We show that this topological quantity reverts to a geometric quantity $e^{iγ}$ if the geometric phase $γ= \oint \mathrm{Im} \langle Φ_R |\nabla_μ Φ_R\rangle \cdot d\mathbf{R}_μ$ is evaluated with the conditional electronic wavefunction $Φ_R(r)$ from the exact electron-nuclear factorization $Φ_R(r)χ(R)$ instead of the adiabatic function $Φ_R^{BO}(r)$. A…
