The low-energy scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by H, He, Ne, and Ar atoms has been investigated in the coupled-channel framework by using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric nonlocal electron-exchange model potential with a single parameter $C$. For H and He we use a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model and for Ar and Ne we use a static-exchange model. The sensitivity of the results is studied with respect to the parameter $C$. Present low-energy cross sections for He, Ne and Ar are in good agreement with experiment.
The formulation of a suitable nonlocal model potential for electron exchange is presented, checked with electron-hydrogen and electron-helium scattering, and applied to the study of elastic and inelastic scattering and ionization of ortho positronium (Ps) by helium. The elastic scattering and the $n = 2$ excitations of Ps are investigated using a three-Ps-state close-coupling approximation. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of Ps atom are treated in the framework of Born approximation with present exchange. Calculations are reported of phase shifts, and elastic, Ps-excitation, a…
The low-energy scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by ortho Ps has been studied in a full quantum mechanical coupled-channel approach. In the singlet channel (total spin $s_T=0$) we find S- and P-wave resonances at 3.35 eV (width 0.02 eV) and 5.05 eV (width 0.04 eV), respectively and a binding of 0.44 eV of Ps$_2$. The scattering length for $s_T=0$ is 3.95 Åand for $s_T=2$ is 0.83 Å. The small $s_T=2$ scattering length makes the spin-polarized ortho Ps atoms an almost noninteracting ideal gas which may undergo Bose-Einstein condensation.
Scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by cesium and rubidium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 5.057 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Rb system and at 5.067 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Cs system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.3 eV of width 0.4 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.4 eV in both systems. The pronounced P- and D-wave resonances in these systems lead to easil…
Scattering of positronium (Ps) by sodium and potassium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential fitted to reproduce accurate theoretical results for PsNa and PsK binding energies. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 4.58 eV of width 0.002 eV in the Ps-Na system and at 4.77 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-K system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.07 eV of width 0.3 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.3 eV in both sys…
We present a convergent variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by hydrogen atom in S wave. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are needed for achieving convergence. We report convergent results for scattering lengths in atomic units for both singlet ($=3.49\pm 0.20$) and triplet ($=2.46\pm 0.10$) states.
We present a variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by helium atom in S wave and apply it to the calculation of the scattering length. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are used in this calculation. We report numerical result for the scattering length in atomic unit: $(1.0\pm 0.1)a_0$. This corresponds to a zero-energy elastic cross section of $(4.0\pm 0.8)πa_0^2$.
Scattering of positronium (Ps) by helium atom has been investigated in a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model including Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. Specifically, we report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering and target-elastic Ps excitations. We also present results for total and different partial cross sections and compare them with experiment and other calculations.
We employ the impulse approximation for description of positronium-atom scattering. Our analysis and calculations of Ps-Kr and Ps-Ar collisions provide theoretical explanation of the similarity between the cross sections for positronium scattering and electron scattering for a range of atomic and molecular targets observed by S. J. Brawley et al. [Science 330, 789 (2010)].
In this paper, we present measurements of the ortho-positronium emission energy in vacuum from mesoporous films using the time of flight technique. We show evidence of quantum mechanical confinement in the mesopores that defines the minimal energy of the emitted Ps. Two samples with different effective pore sizes, measured with positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, are compared for the data collected in the temperature range 50-400 K. The sample with smaller pore size exhibits a higher minimal energy ($73\pm$5 meV), compared to the sample with bigger pores ($48\pm$5 meV), due to the str…
The scattering of ortho-positronium (Ps) by hydrogen atoms has been investigated in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed electron-exchange model potential. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of the Ps atom are calculated using the first Born approximation. Calculations are reported of scattering lengths, phase shifts, elastic, Ps- and H-excitation, and total cross sections. Remarkable correlations are observed between the S-wave Ps-H binding energy and the singlet scattering length, effective range…
The quenching processes of the thermalized ortho-positronium(o-Ps) on an oxygen molecule have been studied by the positron annihilation age-momentum correlation techinique(AMOC). The Doppler broadening spectrum of the 511 keV gamma-rays from the 2gamma annihilation of o-Ps in O_2 has been measured as a function of the o-Ps age. The rate of the quenching, consisting of the pickoff and the spin-conversion, is estimated from the positron lifetime spectrum. The ratio of the pickoff quenching rate to the spin-conversion rate is deduced from the Doppler broadening of the 511 keV gamma-rays from the …
Effect of charge-transfer recombination for positronium (Ps) scattering is studied on Ps-H system using coupled-channel formalism considering a new rearrangement channel Ps+H --> e^+ + H^- and exchange. The correlation and continuum effects introduced by this charge-transfer channel result to substantial convergence to the low energy scattering parameters. Effects on scattering length, PsH binding energy, and low-energy (0-10 eV) phase-shifts and cross sections are evaluated and H$^-$ formation cross sections are reported from above the threshold (6.438 eV) to 100 eV.
Hyperspherical close-coupling method is used to calculate the elastic, positronium formation and excitation cross sections for positron collisions with atomic hydrogen at energies below the H(n=4) threshold for the J=2 partial wave. The resonances below each inelastic threshold are also analyzed. The adiabatic hyperspherical potential curves are used to identify the nature of these resonances.
We report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering, target-elastic Ps excitations and target-inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. The present model yields a singlet Ps-H S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV. We also study the effect of the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme…
Currently, the experimental uncertainty for the determination of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) decay rate is at 150 ppm precision; this is two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical one, at 1 ppm level. Here we propose a new proof of concept experiment aiming for an accuracy of 100 ppm to be able to test the second-order correction in the calculations, which is $\simeq 45\left(\fracαπ\right)^2\approx 200$ ppm. The improvement relies on a new technique to confine the o-Ps in a vacuum cavity. Moreover, a new method was developed to subtract the time dependent pick-off annihilation rate of…
Very low-energy scattering of orthopositronium by helium has been investigated for simultaneous study of elastic cross section and pick-off quenching rate using a model exchange potential. The present calculational scheme, while agrees with the measured cross section of Skalsey et al, reproduces successfully the parameter $^ 1Z_{\makebox{eff}}$, the effective number of electrons per atom in a singlet state relative to the positron. Together with the fact that this model potential also leads to an agreement with measured medium energy cross sections of this system, this study seems to resolve t…
The elastic collision between two ortho-positronium (e.g. S=1) atoms is studied using an ab-initio static-exchange model (SEM) in the center of mass (CM) frame considering the system as a four-body Coulomb problem where all the Coulomb interaction terms in the direct and exchange channels are treated exactly. A coupled-channel methodology in momentum space is used to solve Lippman-Schwinger equation following the integral approach. A new SEM code is developed in which the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) scattering amplitude acts as input to derive the SEM amplitude adapting the partial wave analysis. Th…
Hyperfine splitting of positronium is an important parameter for particle physics. This paper gives experimental techniques and results of R&D studies of our experiment to observe direct hyperfine transition of ortho-positronium to para-positronium.
Exploiting an approach similar to the R-matrix theory, the diffusion Monte Carlo method is employed to compute phase shifts and threshold cross sections for the elastic scattering of o-positronium off light atoms. Results are obtained for Ps-H and Ps-He as representative cases of open and closed shell targets. The method allows for an exact treatment of both correlation and exchange interactions, and represents the most promising approach to deal with these effects in more complicated targets. In particular the Ps-He threshold cross section, computed in a many body framework for the first time…
Positronium (Ps) scattering by noble-gas atoms (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) is studied in the frozen-target approximation and with inclusion of the van der Waals interaction. Single-particle electron and positron states in the field of the target atom are calculated, with the system enclosed by a hard spherical wall. The two-particle Ps wave function is expanded in these states, and the Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized, giving the Ps energy levels in the cavity. Scattering phase shifts, scattering lengths, and cross sections are extracted from these energies and compared with existing calculatio…
A long-standing problem to account for the electron-positron annihilation in positron Hydrogen scattering above the Positronium formation threshold has been resolved by the use of the three-body Faddeev formalism. The multichannel three-body theory for scattering states in presence of a complex absorbing potential is developed in order to compute the direct $e^+ e^-$ annihilation amplitude, the amplitude of Positronium formation and respective cross sections. A number of $e^+ e^-$ direct annihilation cross sections and Positronium formation cross sections in the energy gap between Ps$(1s)$ and…
The coupled-channel model [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 59}, 363 (1999)] that yields converged low-energy phase shifts, and exact binding and resonance features in Ps-H [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 59}, 2058 (1999)] is applied to study Ps-He$^+$ scattering. Similar to PsH, resonances appear in the S-, P-, D-, etc partial waves in the Ps-He$^+$ system but in both the singlet and triplet scattering channels. The latter signifies possible Rydberg states of $e^+$ around singlet and triplet helium. The S-wave singlet resonance at 2.79 eV agrees to that predicted earlier in $e^+$-He entrance channel (energy difference 1…
The dynamics of the complete breakup process in an Ortho Ps - He+ system including electron loss to the continuum (ELC) is studied where both the projectile and the target get ionized. The process is essentially a four body problem and the present model takes account of the two centre effect on the electron ejected from the Ps atom which is crucial for a proper description of the ELC phenomena. The calculations are performed in the framework of Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The exchange effect between the target and the projectile electron is taken into account in a consistent manne…
A problem to account for the direct electron-positron annihilation in positron-hydrogen scattering above the positronium formation threshold has been resolved within the time independent formalism. The generalization of the optical theorem is derived for the case when an absorption potential is present in the Hamiltonian. With this theorem the annihilation cross section is fully determined by scattering amplitudes. This allows us to separate out analytically the contribution of the positronium formation from the overall annihilation cross section. The rest is determined as the direct annihilat…
We calculate elastic scattering of positronium (Ps) by the Xe atom using the recently developed pseudopotential method [I. I. Fabrikant and G. F. Gribakin, Phys. Rev. A 90, 052717 (2014)] and review general features of Ps scattering from heavier rare-gas atoms: Ar, Kr, and Xe. The total scattering cross section is dominated by two contributions: elastic scattering and Ps ionization (breakup). To calculate the Ps ionization cross sections we use the binary-encounter method for Ps collisions with an atomic target. Our results for the ionization cross section agree well with previous calculations…
The photon spectrum in orthopositronium to 3 gamma decay is computed using effective field theory methods. For energetic photons, the spectrum agrees with the Ore-Powell result, but deviates from it when the photon energy is comparable to the positronium binding energy. The decay spectrum in this region depends on a positronium structure function, which is computed in this paper. At still lower energies the photon spectrum is dominated by the parapositronium resonance contribution. Our results are compatible with Low's theorem on soft photon emission.
Low-energy elastic and inelastic scattering in the Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel is treated in a four-body hyperspherical coordinate calculation. Adiabatic potentials are calculated for triplet-triplet, singlet-singlet, and singlet-triplet spin symmetries in the spin representation of coupled electrons and coupled positrons, with total angular momentum $L=0$ and parity equal to $+1$. The s-wave scattering lengths for the asymptotic Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel are calculated for each spin configuration. Results obtained for the s-wave scattering lengths are $a_{\mathrm{TT}}=$~$7.3(2)a_0-i0.02(1)a_0$,…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. The hyperfine splitting of positronium (Ps-HFS: about 203 GHz) is sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model via a vacuum oscillation between an ortho-Ps and a virtual photon. Previous experimental results of the Ps-HFS show 3.9 sigma(15 ppm) discrepancy from the QED calculation. All previous experiments used an indirect method with static magnetic field to cause Zeeman splitting (a few GHz) between triplet states of ortho-Ps, from which the HFS value was derived. One possible systematic error source of the indirec…
Positronium-hydrogen (Ps-H) scattering is of interest, as it is a fundamental four-body Coulomb problem. We have investigated low-energy Ps-H scattering below the Ps(n=2) excitation threshold using the Kohn variational method and variants of the method with a trial wavefunction that includes highly correlated Hylleraas-type short-range terms. We give an elegant formalism that combines all Kohn-type variational methods into a single form. Along with this, we have also developed a general formalism for Kohn-type matrix elements that allows us to evaluate arbitrary partial waves with a single cod…
The confined variational method in conjunction with the orthogonalizing pseudo-potential method and the stabilization method is used to study the low energy elastic scattering between two spin-polarized metastable positronium Ps(2\,$^{3}\!S_1$) atoms. Explicitly correlated Gaussian basis functions are adopted to properly describe the complicated Coulomb interaction among the four charged particles. The calculated $s$-wave scattering length ($\approx8.5\,a_0$) is positive, indicating the possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of fully spin-polarized $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ a…
We investigate positron scattering upon endohedrals and compare it with electron-endohedral scattering. We show that the polarization of the fullerene shell considerably alters the polarization potential of an atom, stuffed inside a fullerene. This essentially affects both the positron and electron elastic scattering phases as well as corresponding cross-sections. Of great importance is also the interaction between the incoming positron and the target electrons that leads to formation the virtual positronium. We illustrate the general trend by concrete examples of positron and electron scatter…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. New precise measurement of orthopositronium decay rate has been performed with an accuracy of 150 ppm, and the result combined with the last three is 7.0401 +- 0.0007 mu s^-1. It is the first result to validate the 2nd order correction. The Hyper Fine Splitting of positronium is sensitive to the higher order corrections of the QED prediction and also to the new physics beyond Standard Model via the quantum oscillation into virtual photon. The discrepancy of 3.5 sigma is found recently between the measured values and the QE…
The positron-hydrogen atom scattering system is considered within the S-wave model. Convergence in the elastic scattering, excitation, ionization, and positronium formation channels is studied as a function of the number and type of states used to expand the total wave function. It is found that all unphysical resonances disappear only if near-complete pseudostate expansions are applied to both the atomic and positronium centers.
New results are presented for Ps(1s) scattering by H(1s), He(1$^1$S) and Li(2s). Calculations have been performed in a coupled state framework, usually employing pseudostates, and allowing for excitation of both the Ps and the atom. In the Ps(1s)-H(1s) calculations the H$^-$ formation channel has also been included using a highly accurate H$^-$ wave function. Resonances resulting from unstable states in which the positron orbits H$^-$ have been calculated and analysed. The new Ps(1s)-He(1$^1$S) calculations still fail to resolve existing discrepancies between theory and experiment at very low …
Fragmentation of ground state ortho Positronium (Ps) in collision with Li ion (Li+) is studied in the framework of post collisional Coulomb distorted eikonal approximation (CDEA) for the target elastic case . The present model takes account of the two center effect on the ejected e which is crucial for a proper description of the projectile ionization involving an ionic target. Both the fully differential (TDCS) and the doubly differential (DDCS) cross sections (energy spectra) are investigated at intermediate and high incident energies. A broad distinct Electron loss peak (ELP) centered aroun…

Positron scattering and annihilation on noble gas atoms below the positronium formation threshold is studied ab initio using many-body theory methods. The many-body theory provides a near-complete understanding of the positron-noble-gas-atom system at these energies and yields accurate numerical results. It accounts for positron-atom and electron-positron correlations, e.g., polarization of the atom by the incident positron and the non-perturbative process of virtual positronium formation. These correlations have a large effect on the scattering dynamics and result in a strong enhancement of t…
The best 3-channel projectile-inelastic [H(1s)+Ps(1s,2s,2p)] close-coupling approximation (CCA) is performed for positronium (Ps) and hydrogen (H) collision considering both the atoms in ground states at the incident channel. The s-wave elastic phase shifts and cross sections in the singlet and triplet channels and the total (or integrated) cross section are studied below inelastic threshold. Resonances in singlet channel using 2-channel and 3-channel projectile-inelastic CCAs confirm earlier prediction [1]. A resonance in triplet channel using 3-channel projectile-inelastic CCA is a new addit…
We apply a new highly efficient method of solving Faddeev-Merkuriev equations to multi-channel scattering calculations of the antihydrogen formation cross section for antiproton scattering off the ground and excited states of the positronium. Our results demonstrate good agreement with the known data on total and partial cross sections for all the reaction channels. Using moderate computational resources we have achieved a supreme energy resolution.
The potential splitting approach incorporated into the framework of Faddeev-Merkuriev equations in the differential form is used for calculations of multichannel scattering in $e^-e^+\bar{p}$ and $e^+e^-\mbox{He}^{++}$ systems. Detailed calculations of all possible S-wave cross-sections are performed %in systems $e^+e^-\bar{p}$ and $e^+e^-\mbox{He}^{++}$ in the low-energy region which supports up to seven open channels including the rearrangement channels of ground and excited states of antihydrogen, positronium and helium ion formations. All known sharp resonances of the systems obtained and …
A pseudopotential for positronium-atom interaction, based on electron-atom and positron-atom phase shifts, is constructed, and the phase shifts for Ps-Kr and Ps-Ar scattering are calculated. This approach allows us to extend the Ps-atom cross sections, obtained previously in the impulse approximation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 243201 (2014)], to energies below the Ps ionization threshold. Although experimental data are not available in this low-energy region, our results describe well the tendency of the measured cross sections to drop with decreasing velocity at $v<1$ a.u. Our results show that t…
The confined variational method is applied to investigate the low-energy elastic scattering of ortho-positronium from $\text{H}_2$ by first-principles quantum mechanics. Describing the correlation effect with explicitly correlated Gaussians, we obtain accurate $S$-wave phase shifts and pick-off annihilation parameters for different incident momenta. By a least-squares fit of the data to the effective-range theory, we determine the $S$-wave scattering length, $A_s=2.06a_0$, and the zero-energy value of the pick-off annihilation parameter, $^1\!\text{Z}_\text{eff}=0.1858$. The obtained $^1\!\tex…
