The short-range properties of the KN interaction are studied within the meson-exchange model of the Juelich group. Specifically, dynamical explanations for the phenomenological short-range repulsion, required in this model for achieving agreement with the empirical KN data, are explored. Evidence is found that contributions from the exchange of a heavy scalar-isovector meson (a_0(980)) as well as from genuine quark-gluon exchange processes are needed. Taking both mechanisms into account a satisfactory description of the KN phase shifts can be obtained without resorting to phenomenological pieces.
We study the effect of isospin degree of freedom on balance energy throughout the mass range between 50 and 350 for two sets of isobaric systems with N/A = 0.5 and 0.58. Our fndings indicate that different values of balance energy for two isobaric systems may be mainly due to the Coulomb repulsion. We also demonstrate clearly the dominance of Coulomb repulsion over symmetry energy.

The strong interactions are charge independent. If we limit ourselves to the strong interactions, we have the isospin $T$ as a good quantum number. Here we consider the lack of level repulsion of states of different isospin and how this effect manifests in nearest neighbor spacing (NNS) histograms, which provide a visual and statistical context in which to study distributions of energy level spacings. In particular, we study nucleons in the f-p model space for the nucleus $^{44}$Ti. We also study the effect of the Coulomb interaction on the level spacing distribution.

We show a way to unifiedly understand the origins of the repulsive core of baryon-baryon interaction and the universal repulsion of three-baryon interaction needed to avoid dramatic softening of the equation of state of neutron stars due to hyperon mixing. For this aim we adopt the string-junction model which embodies the essential aspects of the confinement in the baryon system confirmed by recent lattice QCD calculations. Key concept of this study lies in the recognition that baryonic short-range repulsion appears as the latent effect implying the energy necessary for full overlap of baryons…
The previous analysis of the short-range $NN$ repulsion originating from the Goldstone boson exchange hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks is revisited. We study in which respects the repulsion depends on the radial form of the spin-spin quark-quark force. We show that while the radial form affects the structure of the 6Q wave function, the short-range repulsion in the $NN$ system persists in any case. We extend our analysis to other $YN$ and $YY$ (flavor octet-octet) systems and demonstrate that the flavor-spin hyperfine interaction implies a short-range repulsion in these B=2 sys…
Short-range correlations in nuclear and neutron matter are examined through the properties of the correlated wave function obtained by solving the Bethe-Goldstone equation. Tensor correlations are explored through the dominant tensor-driven transition and central correlations through the singlet and triplet S waves. Predictions from a popular meson-theoretic nucleon-nucleon potential employed in the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach are compared with those from two- and three-body high-quality chiral interactions in Brueckner G-matrix calculations. Short-range correlations in symmetric mat…
Within a transport model using as the input nucleon momentum profiles from a parameterized isospin-dependent single-nucleon momentum distribution with a high momentum tail induced by short-range correlations, we employ the $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon to examine on one hand effects of the short-range correlations on the pion and flow observables in probing the nuclear symmetry energy, and on the other hand how reliable are this isospin-dependent single-nucleon momentum distribution as well as the corresponding parameter settings. Besides significant effects of the shor…
We study the implications of isospin symmetry in nuclear systems on two-body distributions and derive relations between different densities or momentum distributions of a given nucleus or of different nuclei in the same isospin multiplet. A connection between neutrinoless double beta decay transition of mirror nuclei and two-body densities is also obtained. The relations are numerically verified by means of quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We discuss the relevance of these results to the analysis of nuclear short-range correlations and also show that isospin symmetry allows us to extract info…
The structure of the second 2$^+$ resonance in $^{6}$Li is investigated with special emphasis on its isospin 0 components. The wave functions are computed in a three-body model ($α$+$n$+$p$) using the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method combined with complex scaling. In the decay into three free particles the symmetry conserving short-range interaction dominates at short distance whereas the symmetry breaking Coulomb interaction dominates at intermediate and large distances resulting in substantial isospin mixing. We predict the mixing and the energy distributions of the fragments after …
We calculate S-wave singlet and triplet NN phase shifts stemming from the short-range flavor-spin hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks using the resonating group method approach. A strong short-range repulsion is found in both waves. A fair comparison is performed between the traditional picture, relying on the colour-magnetic interaction, and the present one, relying on the Goldstone boson exchange dynamics. It is shown that the latter one induces essentially stronger repulsion, which is a very welcome feature. We also study a sensitivity of phase shifts and wave function to exten…
The past decade has provided a much clearer picture of the structure of high-momentum components in nucleons, associated with hard, short-distance interactions between pairs of nucleons. Recent Jefferson Lab data on light nuclei suggest a connection between these so-called 'short-range correlations' and the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear environment. In light of this discovery that the detailed nuclear structure is important in describing the nuclear quark distributions, we examine the potential impact of the isospin-dependent structure of nuclei to see at what …
Quantitative information on the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlation (SRC) extracted from recent J-Lab experiments was used in constraining the high-momentum tails of single nucleon momentum distributions in both symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and pure neutron matter (PNM). Its effects on the Equations of State of SNM and PNM as well as the nuclear symmetry energy are investigated. It is found that the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of SRC softens significantly the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities.
We review recent investigations on the short distance behaviors of potentials among baryons, which are formulated through the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function. After explaining the method to define the potentials, we analyze the short distance behavior of the NBS wave functions and the corresponding potentials by combining the operator product expansion and a renormalization group analysis in the perturbation theory of QCD. These analytic results are compared with numerical results obtained in lattice QCD simulations.
Tensor-optimized antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (TOAMD) is the basis of the successive variational method for nuclear many-body problem. We apply TOAMD to finite nuclei to be described by the central interaction with strong short-range repulsion, and compare the results with the unitary correlation operator method (UCOM). In TOAMD, the pair-type correlation functions and their multiple products are operated to the AMD wave function. We show the results of TOAMD using the Malfliet-Tjon central potential containing the strong short-range repulsion. Adding the double products of the correlati…
We investigate the short distance behavior of 3 nucleon forces (3NF) defined through Nambu--Bethe--Salpeter wave functions, using the operator product expansion(OPE) and calculating anomalous dimensions of 9--quark operators in perturbative QCD. As is the case of NN forces previously considered, we show that 3NF have repulsions at short distance at 1--loop, which becomes exact in the short distance limit thanks to the asymptotic freedom of QCD. Moreover these behaviors are universal in the sense that they do not depend on the energy of the NBS wave function for 3 nucleons.
Pair densities and associated correlation functions provide a critical tool for introducing many-body correlations into a wide-range of effective theories. Ab initio calculations show that two-nucleon pair-densities exhibit strong spin and isospin dependence. However, such calculations are not available for all nuclei of current interest. We therefore provide a simple model, which involves combining the short and long separation distance behavior using a single blending function, to accurately describe the two-nucleon correlations inherent in existing ab initio calculations. We show that the s…
This work incorporates the effect of short-range repulsion between particles into the Cooper-Frye hadron sampling procedure. This is achieved by means of a rejection sampling step, which prohibits any pair of particles from overlapping in the coordinate space, effectively modeling the effect of hard-core repulsion. The new procedure -- called the FIST sampler -- is based on the package Thermal-FIST. It is used here to study the effect of excluded volume on cumulants of the (net-)proton number distribution in central collisions of heavy ions in a broad collision energy range in conjunction with…

The nuclear force has been understood to have a repulsive core at short distances, similar to a molecular force, since Jastrow proposed it in 1951. The existence of the repulsion was experimentally confirmed from the proton-proton scattering 1S_0 phase shift, which becomes negative beyond 230 MeV. This repulsion is essential for preventing the nucleon-nucleon system from collapsing by attraction. The origin of the repulsion has been considered to be due to the Pauli principle, similar to the repulsion originally revealed in alpha-alpha scattering, in many studies including recent lattice QCD c…
We report on our recent attempts to determine the short distance behaviors of general 2-baryon and 3-baryon forces, which are defined from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter(NBS) wave function, by using the operator product expansion and a renormalization group analysis in QCD. We have found that the repulsion at short distance increases as the number of valence quarks increases or when the number of different flavors involved decreases. This global tendency suggests a Pauli suppression principle among quark fields at work.
We derive from the subleading contributions to the chiral three-nucleon force (short-range terms and relativistic corrections, published in Phys. Rev. C84, 054001 (2011)) a density-dependent two-nucleon interaction $V_\text{med}$ in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The momentum and $k_f$-dependent potentials associated with the isospin operators ($1$ and $ \vecτ_1\!\cdot\!\vecτ_2$) and five independent spin-structures are expressed in terms of loop functions, which are either given in closed analytical form or require at most one numerical integration. Our results for $V_\text{med}$ are most …
The target-mass number dependence of nucleon-nucleon pairs with short-range correlations is explored in a physically transparent geometrical model within a zero-range approximation. The observed $A$ dependence of 2-nucleon ejection cross sections in $(e,e')$ reactions is found to reflect the mass dependence of nuclear density distributions. A parametrization of this $A$ dependence is given. The $A$ dependence of proton-proton vs.\ proton-neutron pairs relative to $^{12}$C is also analyzed in this model. It can be understood using simple combinatorics without any additional isospin dependence.
We present a short overview of our recent theoretical developments aiming at the description of exotic nuclear phenomena to be reached and studied at the next-generation radioactive beam facilities. Applications to nuclear shell structure and response of nuclei at the limits of their existence, with a special focus on the physics cases of astrophysical importance, are discussed.
Recent studies have shown that the per-nucleon number of Short-Range Correlated (SRC) pairs in nuclei and the strength of the EMC effect are linearly correlated, increasing from light nuclei up to iron and then saturating. This paper shows that the per-proton number of SRC pairs and the strength of the EMC effect are linearly correlated and increase from light to heavy asymmetric neutron-rich nuclei without saturation. These quantities, calculated per neutron, are also linearly related, but saturate (have constant value) remarkably early, starting with 12C. We propose that the observed phenome…
We decompose the tribaryon configuration in terms of SU(3) flavor and spin state and analyse their color-spin-flavor wave function following Pauli principle. By comparing the color-color and color-spin interactions of compact tribaryon configuration against the lowest three nucleon threshold within a constituent quark model, we show that the three nucleon forces have to be repulsive at short distance for all possible quantum numbers and all values of the SU(3) symmetry breaking parameter. Our work identifies the origin of the repulsive nuclear three body forces including the hyperons at short …
We provide a systematic study of the isospin composition and neutron-to-proton $\left( \frac{N}{Z} \right)$ ratio dependence of nuclear short-range correlations (SRC) across the nuclear mass table. We use the low-order correlation operator approximation (LCA) to compute the SRC contribution to the single-nucleon momentum distributions for 14 different nuclei from $A=4$ to $A=208$. Ten asymmetric nuclei are included for which the neutrons outnumber the protons by a factor of up to 1.54. The computed momentum distributions are used to extract the pair composition of the SRC. We find that there i…
We calculate the density-dependent spin-isospin asymmetry energy $J(k_f)$ of nuclear matter in the three-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. The interaction contributions to $J(k_f)$ originate from one-pion exchange, iterated one-pion exchange, and irreducible two-pion exchange with no, single, and double virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. We find that the approximation to $1π$-exchange and iterated $1π$-exchange terms (which leads already to a good nuclear matter equation of state by adjusting an emerging contact-term) is spin-isospin stable, since $J(k_{f0})\simeq 24 {\rm MeV}>0$. …
We report variational calculations of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter, using the new Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. At the equilibrium density of 0.16 fm^-3 the two-nucleon densities in symmetric nuclear matter are found to exhibit a short-range spin-isospin structure similar to that found in light nuclei. We also find that both symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter undergo transitions to phases with pion condensation at densities of 0.32 fm^-3 and 0.2 fm^-3, respectively. Neither transtion occurs with the Urbana v14 two-nucleon in…
The renormalization-group approaches for classical liquids in previous works require a repulsive reference such as a hard-core one when applied to systems with short-range repulsion. The need for the reference is circumvented here by using a functional renormalization group approach for integrating the hierarchical flow of correlation functions along a path of variable interatomic coupling. We introduce the cavity distribution functions to avoid the appearance of divergent terms and choose a path to reduce the error caused by the decomposition of higher order correlation functions. We demonstr…
Within the framework of Fermionic Molecular Dynamics a method is developed to better account for long range tensor correlations in nuclei when working with a single Slater determinant. Single-particle states with mixed isospin and broken parity build up an intrinsic Slater determinant which is then charge and parity projected. By minimizing the energy of this many-body state with respect to the parameters of the single-particle states and projecting afterwards on angular momentum ground state energies are obtained that are systematically lower than corresponding Hartree-Fock results. The reali…
Besides earlier predictions based on both phenomenological models and modern microscopic many-body theories, circumstantial evidence was recently found for a reduced kinetic symmetry energy of isospin-asymmetric nucleonic matter compared to the free Fermi gas model prediction due to the short-range correlation of high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. While keeping the total symmetry energy near the saturation density of nuclear matter consistent with existing experimental constraints, we examine the correspondingly enhanced role of the isospin degree of freedom in heavy-ion collisions at interme…
A phenomenological model for the hyperon-nucleon interactions is constructed by using the quark cluster model approach to the short-distance baryon-baryon interactions. The model contains the SU(3) symmetric meson exchange interaction at large distances and the quark-exchange short-distance interaction. The main feature of the model is that strong channel dependences of the short range repulsions due to the quark model symmetry. It is pointed out that two channels, ($I$, $S$)= (1/2, 0) and (3/2, 1), of the S-wave sigma-nucleon interactions have extremely strong repulsions at short-distances.
Instead of the Yukawa mechanism for intermediate- and short-range interaction some new approach based on formation of the symmetric six-quark bag in the state $|(0s)^6[6]_X,L=0>$ dressed due to strong coupling to $π$, $σ$ and $ρ$ fields are suggested. This new mechanism offers both a strong intermediate-range attraction which replaces the effective $σ$-exchange (or excitation of two isobars in the intermediate state) in traditional force models and also short-range repulsion. Simple illustrative model is developed which demonstrates clearly how well the suggested new mechanism can reproduce $N…
We study the short range repulsion in the KN system due to quark-gluon exchange. Phase shifts for spin-spin, color Coloumb and spin-orbit interactions are presented.
The strongly isospin-dependent tensor force leads to short-range correlations (SRC) between neutron-proton (deuteron-like) pairs much stronger than those between proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairs. As a result of the short-range correlations, the single-nucleon momentum distribution develops a high-momentum tail above the Fermi surface. Because of the strongly isospin-dependent short-range correlations, in neutron-rich matter a higher fraction of protons will be depleted from its Fermi sea and populate above the Fermi surface compared to neutrons. This isospin-dependent nucleon momentum d…
It is shown that the short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction between the constituent quarks which explains baryon spectroscopy and the short-range repulsion in the NN system induces a strong short-range repulsion in the flavour-singlet state of the $ΛΛ$ system with $J^P=0^+$. It then suggests that a deeply bound H-particle should not exist. We also compare our approach with other models employing different hyperfine interactions between quarks in the nonperturbative regime of QCD.
We consider the spin-isospin-independent central part of the residual nucleon-nucleon potential in finite spherical nuclei taking into account the deformation effects of the nucleons within the surrounding nuclear environment. It is shown that inside the nucleus the short-range repulsive contribution of the potential is increased and the intermediate attraction is decreased. We identify the growth of the radial component of the spin-isospin independent short-range part of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction as the responsible agent that prevents the radial collapse of the nucleus.
The nucleon momentum distribution $n_A(k)$ for $A=$2, 3, 4, 16, and 40 nuclei is systematically analyzed in terms of wave functions resulting from advanced solutions of the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation, obtained within different many-body approaches. Particular attention is paid to the separation of the momentum distributions into the mean-field and short-range correlations (SRC) contributions. It is shown that at high values of the momentum $k$ the high-momentum components ($k\gtrsim 1.5-2$ fm$^{-1}$) of all nuclei considered are very similar, exhibiting the well-known scaling behavio…
The Hamiltonian for a small number, N <= 11, of bosons in a rapidly rotating harmonic trap, interacting via a short range (contact potential) or a long range (Coulomb) interaction, is studied via an exact diagonalization in the lowest Landau level. Our analysis shows that, for both low and high fractional fillings, the bosons localize and form rotating boson molecules (RBMs) consisting of concentric polygonal rings. Focusing on systems with the number of trapped atoms sufficiently large to form multi-ring bosonic molecules, we find that, as a function of the rotational frequency and regardless…
The by now well-established scalar-isoscalar resonance $f_{0}(500)$ (the $σ$ meson) seems potentially relevant in the evaluation of thermodynamic quantities of a hadronic gas, since its mass is low. However, we recall that its contribution to isospin-averaged observables is, to a surprising accuracy, canceled by the repulsion from the pion-pion scalar-isotensor channel. As a result, in practice one should not incorporate $f_0(500)$ in standard hadronic resonance-gas models for studies of isospin averaged quantities. In our analysis we use the formalism of the virial expansion, which allows one…
We study the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction in a chiral constituent quark model by diagonalizing a Hamiltonian comprising a linear confinement and a Goldstone boson exchange interaction between quarks. The six-quark harmonic oscillator basis contains up to two excitation quanta. We show that the highly dominant configuration is $\mid s^4p^2[42]_O [51]_{FS}>$ due to its specific flavour-spin symmetry. Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation we find a strong effective repulsion at zero separation between nucleons in both $^3S_1$ and $^1S_0$ channels. The symmetry structure of the highl…
The isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions is a fundamental issue in nuclear physics and has broad ramifications in astrophysics. Its uncertainties, especially the difference of neutron-proton interactions in the isosinglet and isotriplet channels, affect significantly the density and momentum dependence of the isovector single-nucleon potential and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlation in neutron-rich matter. Consequently, the neutron-proton effective mass splitting and the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are still rather uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions …
[Background] Single-reference density functional theory is very successful in reproducing bulk nuclear properties like binding energies, radii, or quadrupole moments throughout the entire periodic table. Its extension to the multi-reference level allows for restoring symmetries and, in turn, for calculating transition rates. [Purpose] We propose a new no-core-configuration-interaction (NCCI) model treating properly isospin and rotational symmetries. The model is applicable to any nucleus irrespective of its mass and neutron- and proton-number parity. It properly includes polarization effects c…
The observed correlation between the EMC effect and the contribution of short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei suggests that the modification of the quark distributions of bound protons and neutrons might occur within SRCs. This raises the possibility that the EMC effect may have an isospin dependence arising from the np dominance of SRCs. We discuss previous attempts to test this possibility and perform a new analysis of existing data. We find no experimental support for the observation of an isospin dependence of the EMC effect.
We provide a calculation of N-body (N>2) nucleon interactions at short distances in holographic QCD. In the Sakai-Sugimoto model of large N_c massless QCD, N baryons are described by N Yang-Mills instantons in 5 spacetime dimensions. We compute a classical short distance interaction hamiltonian for N 'tHooft instantons. This corresponds to N baryons sharing identical classical spins and isospins. We find that genuine N-body nuclear forces turn out to vanish for N>2, at the leading order. This suggests that classical N-body forces are always suppressed compared with 2-body forces.
In the effective field theory framework the interaction between two heavy hadrons can be decomposed into a long- and a short-range piece. The long-range piece corresponds to the one-pion-exchange potential and is relatively well-known. The short-range piece is given by a series of contact-range interactions with unknown couplings, which substitute the less well-known short-range dynamics. While the general structure of the short-range potential between heavy hadrons is heavily constrained from heavy-quark symmetry, the couplings are still free parameters. Here we argue that the relative streng…
The CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Laboratory has compared nuclear parton distributions for a range of nuclear targets and found that the EMC effect measured in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering has a strongly "isophobic" nature. This surprising observation suggests short-range correlations between neighboring $n$ and $p$ nucleons in nuclear wavefunctions that are much stronger compared to $p-p$ or $n-n$ correlations. In this paper we propose a definitive experimental test of the nucleon-nucleon explanation of the isophobic nature of the EMC effect: the diffractive dissociation on a nu…
Short-range parts of the baryon-baryon ($BB$) interactions are analyzed from the spin-flavor $SU(6)_{sf}\supset SU(3)_f \times SU(2)_s$ symmetry viewpoint. Due to the Pauli principle of quarks, the symmetry structure of the wave functions is restricted at short distances. Consequently, the $BB$ states with the same spin-flavor quantum numbers may be reduced into one or a few spin-flavor states. Such reduction causes repulsion and/or suppression of transitions at short distances. We show that the observed suppression of the $ΞN \to ΛΛ$ conversion can be explained following the above argument. I…
Diquark formation across a short-range nucleon-nucleon pair is proposed as the underlying QCD physics of short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei. SRC pairs have been proposed as the cause of distorted quark behavior in nuclei; experimentally observed quark momentum distribution distortions termed the EMC effect. The strong spatial overlap of SRC pairs brings nucleon constituents within range of inter-nucleon QCD potentials and any bonds formed - such as the diquark bond - affects their distributions. In this SRC model, diquarks form in the $\rm 3_C \otimes 3_C \rightarrow \bar{3}_C$ channel o…
High-momentum configurations of nucleon pairs at short-distance are probed using measurements of the $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ and $^{12}$C$(e,e'pN)$ reactions (where $N$ is either $n$ or $p$), at high-$Q^2$ and $x_B>1.1$. The data span a missing-momentum range of 300--1000 MeV/c and are predominantly sensitive to the transition region of the strong nuclear interaction from a Tensor to Scalar interaction. The data are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Generalized Contact Formalism with both chiral and phenomenological nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interaction models. This agreement sugges…
