We study a new class of vector solitons in trapped Nonlinear Schrodinger systems modelling the dynamics of coupled light beams in GRIN Kerr media and atomic mixtures in Bose-Einstein condensates. These solitons exist for different spatial dimensions, their existence is studied by means of a systematic mathematical technique and the analysis is made for inhomogeneous media.
We use a multiple time scale boundary layer theory to derive the equation of motion for a dark (or `grey') soliton propagating through an effectively one-dimensional cloud of Bose-Einstein condensate, assuming only that the background density and velocity vary slowly on the soliton scale. We show that solitons can exhibit viscous or radiative acceleration (anti-damping), which we estimate as slow but observable on experimental time scales.
In this paper we study the behavior of dissipative solitons in systems with high order nonlinear dissipation and show how they cannot survive under the effect of trapping potentials both of rigid wall type or asymptotically increasing ones. This provides an striking example of a soliton which cannot be trapped and only survives to the action of a weak potential.
We numerically investigate a particular type of spin solitons inside a trapped atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with ferromagnetic interactions. Within the mean field theory approximation, our study of the solitonic dynamics shows that the solitonic wave function, its center of mass motion, and the local spin evolutions are stable and are intimately related to the domain structures studied recently in spin-1 $^{87}$Rb condensates. We discuss a rotating reference frame wherein the dynamics of the solitonic local spatial spin distribution become time independent.
Small quantum fluctuations in solitons described by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CQNLSE) are studied with the linear approximation. The cases of both self-defocusing and self-focusing quintic term are considered (in the latter case, solitons may be effectively stable, despite the possibility of collapse). The numerically implemented back-propagation method is used to calculate the optimal squeezing ratio for the quantum fluctuations vs. the propagation distance. In the case of the self-defocusing quintic nonlinearity, opposite signs in front of the cubic and quintic terms …
Physically relevant soliton solutions of the resonant nonlinear Schrodinger (RNLS) equation with nontrivial boundary conditions, recently proposed for description of uniaxial waves in a cold collisionless plasma, are considered in the Hirota bilinear approach. By the Madelung representation, the model is transformed to the reaction-diffusion analog of the NLS equation for which the bilinear representation, soliton solutions and their mutual interactions are studied.
In this paper, we give a proof of the existence of stationary dark soliton solutions or heteroclinic orbits of nonlinear equations of Schrödinger type with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. The result is illustrated with examples of dark solitons for cubic and photorefractive nonlinearities.
An explicit two-soliton solution for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions is derived, demonstrating details of interactions between two bright solitons, two dark solitons, as well as one bright soliton and one dark soliton. Shifts of soliton positions due to collisions are analytically obtained, which are irrespective of the bright or dark characters of the participating solitons.
Stationary and oscillatory bound states, or complexes, of the damped-driven solitons are numerically path-followed in the parameter space. We compile a chart of the two-soliton attractors, complementing the one-soliton attractor chart.
We consider a two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrodinger equation with self-focusing nonlinearity and a quasi-1D double-channel potential, i.e., a straightforward 2D extension of the well-known double-well potential. The model may be realized in terms of nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. The variational approximation (VA) predicts a bifurcation breaking the symmetry of 2D solitons trapped in the double channel, the bifurcation being of the subcritical type. The predictions of the VA are confirmed by numerical simulations. The work presents the first example of the spontaneous sym…
We consider the undamped nonlinear Schrödinger equation driven by a periodic external force. Classes of travelling solitons and multisoliton complexes are obtained by the numerical continuation in the parameter space. Two previously known stationary solitons and two newly found localised solutions are used as the starting points for the continuation. We show that there are two families of stable solitons: one family is stable for sufficiently low velocities while solitons from the second family stabilise when travelling faster than a certain critical speed. The stable solitons of the former fa…
In the paper an interaction between a soliton and a traveling wave in the Coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (CNLSE) is considered. The force acting on the soliton can both push or pull the soliton depending on parameters of the equation, structure of the soliton and the incident wave. In special cases analytical results are presented and in general numerical solutions of both linearized and the full problem are shown.
We consider the discrete solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) lattice. The discrete soliton in the anti-continuum limit represents an arbitrary finite superposition of {\em in-phase} or {\em anti-phase} excited nodes, separated by an arbitrary sequence of empty nodes. By using stability analysis, we prove that the discrete solitons are all unstable near the anti-continuum limit, except for the solitons, which consist of alternating anti-phase excited nodes. We classify analytically and confirm numerically the number of unstable eigenval…
A new integrable (2+1)-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation is proposed. The $N$-soliton solution is given by Gram type determinant. It is found that the localized N-soliton solution has interesting interaction behavior which shows change of amplitude of localized pulses after collisions.
Employing a time-dependent mean-field-hydrodynamic model we study the generation of black solitons in a degenerate fermion-fermion mixture in a cigar-shaped geometry using variational and numerical solutions. The black soliton is found to be the first stationary vibrational excitation of the system and is considered to be a nonlinear continuation of the vibrational excitation of the harmonic oscillator state. We illustrate the stationary nature of the black soliton, by studying different perturbations on it after its formation.
A proof of existence of stationary dark soliton solutions of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential is given. It is based on the interpretation of the dark soliton as a heteroclinic on the Poincaré map.
We demonstrate that the fission of higher-order N-solitons with a subsequent ejection of fundamental quasi-solitons creates solitonic cavities, formed by a pair of solitons with dispersive light trapped between them. As a result of multiple reflections of the trapped light from the bounding solitons which act as mirrors, they bend their trajectories and collide. In the spectral-domain, the two solitons receive blue and red wavelength shifts, respectively. The spectrum of the bouncing trapped light alters as well. This phenomenon strongly affect spectral characteristics of the generated superco…
In the framework of extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (ENSE) the classification of self-similar solutions by the relation between the amplitude and phase is performed. New solutions of ENSE - ``gray soliton'' and ``gray soliton chain'' are presented. The properties of these solutions and the possibility for using theirs in physical applications are discussed.
On the basis of a recently-proposed method to find solitary solutions of generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations [1]-[3], the existence of an envelope solitonlike solutions of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing an anti-cubic nonlinearity (|Psi|^{-4} Psi) plus a "regular" nonlinear part is investigated. In particular, in case the regular nonlinear part consists of a sum of a cubic and a quintic nonlinearities (i.e. q_1 |Psi|^2 Psi + q_2 |Psi|^4 Psi), an upper-shifted bright envelope solitonlike solution is explicitly found.
We consider the interplay of repulsive short-range and same-sign long-range interactions in the dynamics of dark solitons, as prototypical coherent nonlinear excitations in a trapped 1D Bose gas. First, the form of the ground state is examined, and then both the existence of the solitary waves and their stability properties are explored, and corroborated by direct numerical simulations. We find that single- and multiple-dark-soliton states can exist and are generically robust in the presence of long-range interactions. We analyze the modes of vibration of such excitations and find that their r…
We obtain new results on the stability of discrete dark solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, following the analysis of our previous paper [Physica D 212, 1-19 (2005)]. We derive a criterion for stability or instability of dark solitons from the limiting configuration of the discrete dark soliton and confirm this criterion numerically. We also develop detailed calculations of the relevant eigenvalues for a number of prototypical configurations and obtain very good agreement of asymptotic predictions with the numerical data.
We investigate the collision of two oblique dark solitons in the two dimensional supersonic nonlinear Schrödinger flow past two impenetrable obstacles. We numerically show that this collision is very similar to the dark soliton collisions in the one dimensional case. We observe that it is practically elastic and we measure the shifts of the solitons positions after their interaction.
Asymptotic stability of small solitons in one dimension is proved in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with septic and higher power-law nonlinearities and an external potential supporting a simple isolated eigenvalue. The analysis relies on the dispersive decay estimates from Pelinovsky & Stefanov (2008) and the arguments of Mizumachi (2008) for a continuous nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one dimension. Numerical simulations suggest that the actual decay rate of perturbations near the asymptotically stable solitons is higher than the one used in the analysis.
In this paper, we report a more general class of nondegenerate soliton solutions, associated with two distinct wave numbers in different modes, for a certain class of physically important integrable two component nonlinear Schrödinger type equations through bilinearization procedure. In particular, we consider coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations (both focusing as well as mixed type nonlinearities), coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) equations and long-wave-short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system. We point out that the obtained general form of soliton solutions e…
Discrete solitons in the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations with damping and strong rapid drive are investigated. The averaged equations have the forms of the parametric AL and DNLS equations. A new type of parametric bright discrete soliton and cnoidal waves are found and the stability properties are analyzed. The analytical predictions of the perturbed inverse scattering transform are confirmed by the numerical simulations of the AL and DNLS equations with rapidly varying drive and damping.
We numerically investigate the long time dynamics of spatially periodic breather solutions of the 1-D nonlinear Schrödinger equation under parametric forcing of the form $f(x)=f_0 \exp(iKx)$ along with dissipation. In the absence of dissipation, robust soliton-like excitations are observed that travel with constant amplitude and velocity. With dissipation, these solitons lose energy (and amplitude) yet gain speed - a characteristic not observed in an ordinary soliton. Moreover, these novel solitons are found to be stable against random perturbations.
The paper presents soliton-breather models of particles tunneling on the example of Klein-Gordon and Schrodinger equation nonlinear breathers. It is shown that in this case the non-linearity registration should lead to spatial restrictions in breathers wave properties observation and to appearance of radiation during tunneling. The paper also presents a new type of Schrodinger equation, which leads to the solutions localization in a space three-dimensional spherically symmetric case.
A study of high-order solitons in three nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations is presented, which includes the \PT-symmetric, reverse-time, and reverse-space-time nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations. General high-order solitons in three different equations are derived from the same Riemann-Hilbert solutions of the AKNS hierarchy, except for the difference in the corresponding symmetry relations on the "perturbed" scattering data. Dynamics of general high-order solitons in these equations is further analyzed. It is shown that the high-order fundamental-soliton is always moving on severa…
The soliton solution of the integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) of Manakov type is investigated by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) scheme. We get the bright N-solitons solution by solving the integrable uncoupled NLS of Manakov type. We also find that there is an elastic collision of the bright N-solitons.
General $N$-solitons in three recently-proposed nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations are presented. These nonlocal equations include the reverse-space, reverse-time, and reverse-space-time nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which are nonlocal reductions of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. It is shown that general $N$-solitons in these different equations can be derived from the same Riemann-Hilbert solutions of the AKNS hierarchy, except that symmetry relations on the scattering data are different for these equations. This Riemann-Hilbert framework allows us to identify new t…
We demonstrate that stabilization of solitons of the multidimensional Schrodinger equation with a cubic nonlinearity may be achieved by a suitable periodic control of the nonlinear term. The effect of this control is to stabilize the unstable solitary waves which belong to the frontier between expanding and collapsing solutions and to provide an oscillating solitonic structure, some sort of breather-type solution. We obtain precise conditions on the control parameters to achieve the stabilization and compare our results with accurate numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation.…
We discuss a computational mechanism for the generation of a stationary dark soliton, or black soliton, in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate using the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation for both attractive and repulsive interaction. It is demonstrated that the black soliton with a "notch" in the probability density with a zero at the minimum is a stationary eigenstate of the GP equation and can be efficiently generated numerically as a nonlinear continuation of the first vibrational excitation of the GP equation in both attractive and repulsive cases in one and three dimensions for pure harmonic …
We study the existence, formation and dynamics of gray solitons for an extended quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The considered model finds applications to water waves, when the characteristic parameter $kh$ - where $k$ is the wavenumber and $h$ is the undistorted water's depth - takes the critical value $kh=1.363$. It is shown that this model admits approximate dark soliton solutions emerging from an effective Korteweg-de Vries equation and that two types of gray solitons exist: fast and slow, with the latter being almost stationary objects. Analytical results are corroborated by…
We harness the freedom in the celebrated gauge transformation approach to generate dark solitons of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type equations. The new approach which is purely algebraic could prove to be very useful, particularly in the construction of vector dark solitons in the fields of nonlinear optics, plasma physics and Bose-Einstein condensates. We have employed this algebraic method to coupled Gross- Pitaevskii (GP) and NLS equations and obtained dark solitons.
We study the interactions of a Bragg-grating soliton with a localized attractive defect which is a combined perturbation of the grating and refractive index. A family of exact analytical solutions for solitons trapped by the delta-like defect is found. Direct simulations demonstrate that, up to the numerical accuracy available, the trapped soliton is stable at a single value of its intrinsic parameter ("mass"). Trapped solitons with larger mass relax to the stable one through the emission of radiation, while the solitons with smaller mass decay. Depending on values of parameters, simulations o…
We prove that line solitons of the two-dimensional hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation are unstable with respect to transverse perturbations of arbitrarily small periods, {\em i.e.}, short waves. The analysis is based on the construction of Jost functions for the continuous spectrum of Schrödinger operators, the Sommerfeld radiation conditions, and the Lyapunov--Schmidt decomposition. Precise asymptotic expressions for the instability growth rate are derived in the limit of short periods.
The stability and collapse of fundamental unstaggered bright solitons in the discrete Schrodinger equation with the nonpolynomial on-site nonlinearity, which models a nearly one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a deep optical lattice, are studied in the presence of the long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions. The cases of both attractive and repulsive contact and DD interaction are considered. The results are summarized in the form of stability/collapse diagrams in the parametric space of the model, which demonstrate that the the attractive DD interactions stabilize the solit…
The well known effect of the linear damping on the moving nonlinear Schrödinger soliton (even when there is a supply of energy via the spatially homogeneous driving) is to quench its momentum to zero. Surprisingly, the zero momentum does not necessarily mean zero velocity. We show that two or more parametrically driven damped solitons can form a complex traveling with zero momentum at a nonzero constant speed. All traveling complexes we have found so far, turned out to be unstable. Thus, the parametric driving is capable of sustaining the uniform motion of damped solitons, but some additional …
The general multi-soliton solution of the integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) of Manakov type is investigated by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) scheme. We get the bright and dark multi-soliton solution using inverse scattering method of ZS scheme. Elastic and inelastic collision of N-solitons solution of the equation are also discussed.
In this paper, we succeed to bilinearize the $\cal{PT}$-invariant nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation through a nonstandard procedure and present more general bright soliton solutions. We achieve this by bilinearizing both the NNLS equation and its associated parity transformed complex conjugate equation in a novel way. The obtained one and two soliton solutions are invariant under combined space and time reversal transformations and are more general than the known ones. Further, by considering the two-soliton solution we bring out certain novel interaction properties of the $\cal{P…
The existence of soliton families in non-parity-time-symmetric complex potentials remains poorly understood, especially in two spatial dimensions. In this article, we analytically investigate the bifurcation of soliton families from linear modes in one- and two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with localized Wadati-type non-parity-time-symmetric complex potentials. By utilizing the conservation law of the underlying non-Hamiltonian wave system, we convert the complex soliton equation into a new real system. For this new real system, we perturbatively construct a continuous family of…
In this letter we report the existence of nondegenerate fundamental bright soliton solution for coupled multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations of Manakov type. To derive this class of nondegenerate vector soliton solutions, we adopt the Hirota bilinear method with appopriate general class of seed solutions. Very interestingly the obtained nondegenerate fundamental soliton solution of the $N$-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) system admits multi-hump natured intensity profiles. We explicitly demonstrate this specific property by considering the nondegenerate soliton solutions for $3…
Solitons confined in a channel are studied in the two-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation. When a channel branches into two channels, a soliton is split into two solitons, if the initial kinetic energy exceeds a critical value. The branching point works as a pulse splitter. If it is below the critical value, the soliton is reflected. The critical kinetic energy for splitting is evaluated by a variational method. The variational method can be applied in the design of channel systems with reduced reflection.
Exact analytical soliton solutions play an important role in soliton fields. Soliton solutions were obtained with some special constraints on the nonlinear parameters in nonlinear coupled systems, but they usually do not holds in real physical systems. We successfully release all usual constrain conditions on nonlinear parameters for exact analytical vector soliton solutions in $N$-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The exact soliton solutions and their existence condition are given explicitly. Applications of these results are discussed in several present experimental paramete…
We consider the existence of a dynamically stable soliton in the one-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger model with strong cubic nonlinearity management for periodic and random modulations. We show that the predictions of the averaged cubic-quintic NLS equation and modified variational approach for the arrest of collapse coincide. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations of one-dimensional cubic-quintic NLS equation with rapidly and strongly varying cubic nonlinearity coefficient.
We have considered cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation along with supersymmetric $\mathcal{PT}$ like potential and obtained exact stationary solutions in terms of bright and brigh-dark interacting solitons. The $\mathcal{PT}$ broken and $\mathcal{PT}$ unbroken regions are demonstrated also depicted. Connected and disconnected stable regions of bright and dark solitons are examined incorporating linear stability analysis validated by direct numerical simulations. Moreover, the strength of stability has been illustrated through excitations of bright and dark solitons.
We construct soliton solution of a variable coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of parity reflection - time reversal $(\mathcal{PT})-$ symmetric Rosen-Morse potential using similarity transformation technique. We transform the variable coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equation into the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric potential with certain integrability conditions. We investigate in-detail the features of the obtained soliton solutions with two different forms of dispersion parameters. Further, we analyze the nonlinear tunneling effect of …
We investigate stability of (2+1)-dimensional ring solitons of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities. Computing eigenvalues of the linearised equation, we show that rings with spin (topological charge) s=1 and s=2 are linearly stable, provided that they are very broad. The stability regions occupy, respectively, 9% and 8% of the corresponding existence regions. These results finally resolve a controversial stability issue for this class of models.
Travelling solitary waves in the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLSE) with saturable onsite nonlinearity are studied. A variational approximation (VA) for the solitary waves is derived in an analytical form. The stability is also studied by means of the VA, demonstrating that the solitons are stable, which is consistent with previously published results. Then, the VA is applied to predict parameters of travelling solitons with non-oscillatory tails (\textit{embedded solitons}, ESs). Two-soliton bound states are considered too. The separation distance between the soli…
We derive an exact solution to the local nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) using the Darboux transformation method. The new solution describes the profile and dynamics of a two-soliton molecule. Using an algebraically-decaying seed solution, we obtain a two-soliton solution with diverging peaks, which we denote as singular soliton molecule. We find that the new solution has a finite binding energy. We calculate the force and potential of interaction between the two solitons, which turn out to be of molecular-type. The robustness of the bond between the two solitons is also verified. Furthe…
We point out certain basic misconceptions and incorrect statements given by Gürses and Pekcan in the recent paper {\bf J. Math. Phys. 59, 051501 (2018)}. We re-emphasize the soliton solution derived by us earlier in {\bf Phys. Lett. A. 381, 2380 (2017)} for the reverse space nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation is correct and more general and contains the solutions given by Gürses and Pekcan as special cases.
The extended nonlinear Schrödinger (ENLS) equation with third-order term and fourth-order term which describes the wave propagation in the optical fibers is more accurate than the NLS equation. A study of high-order soliton matrix is presented for an ENLS equation in the framework of the Riemann-Hilbert problem (RHP). Through a standard dressing procedure and the generalized Darboux transformation (gDT), soliton matrix for simple zeros and elementary high-order zeros in the RHP for the ENLS equation are constructed. Then the N-soliton solutions and high-order soliton solutions for the ENLS equ…
Using the method of asymptotics beyond all orders, we evaluate the amplitude of radiation from a moving small-amplitude soliton in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. When the nonlinearity is of the cubic type, this amplitude is shown to be nonzero for all velocities and therefore small-amplitude solitons moving without emitting radiation do not exist. In the case of a saturable nonlinearity, on the other hand, the radiation is found to be completely suppressed when the soliton moves at one of certain isolated `sliding velocities'. We show that a discrete soliton moving at a general s…
We analyze initial-boundary value problems for an integrable generalization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation formulated on the half-line. In particular, we investigate the so-called linearizable boundary conditions, which in this case are of Robin type. Furthermore, we use a particular solution to verify explicitly all the steps needed for the solution of a well-posed problem.
It is shown that the $N$-dark soliton solutions of the integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (IDNLS) equation are given in terms of the Casorati determinant. The conditions for reduction, complex conjugacy and regularity for the Casorati determinant solution are also given explicitly. The relationship between the IDNLS and the relativistic Toda lattice is discussed.
We use the Riemann-Hilbert problem to study the interaction of the soliton with radiation in the parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The analysis is reduced to the study of a finite-dimensional dynamical system for the amplitude and phase of the soliton and the complex amplitude of the long-wavelength radiation. In contrast to previously utilised Inverse Scattering-based perturbation techniques, our approach is valid for arbitrarily large driving strengths and damping coefficients. We show that, contrary to suggestions made in literature, the complexity observed in th…
We investigate the focusing coupled PT-symmetric nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation employing Darboux transformation approach. We find a family of exact solutions including pairs of Bright-Bright, Dark-Dark and Bright-Dark solitons in addition to solitary waves. We show that one can convert bright bound state onto a dark bound state in a two-soliton solution by selectively fine tuning the amplitude dependent parameter. We also show that the energy in each mode remains conserved unlike the celebrated Manakov model. We also characterize the behaviour of the soliton solutions in detail. We e…
The integrable vector nonlinear Schrodinger (vector NLS) equation is investigated by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) scheme. We get a Lax pair formulation of the vector NLS model. Multi-soliton solution of the equation is also derived by using inverse scattering method of ZS scheme. We also find that there is an elastic and inelastic collision of the bright and dark multi-solitons of the system.
