We study non-isotrivial projective families of elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one, over complex projective curves. If the base is an elliptic curve, we show that the family must have a singular fibre, and that over the projective line it must have at least three singular fibres. Similar results, for families of surfaces of general type, have been obtained by Migliorini and Kovács, and they are well-known for projective families of surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero. Revised version: We corrected some minor errors and ambiguities, and we completed the list of references.
We prove constancy of Newton polygons of all convergent $F$-isocrystals on Abelian varieties over finite fields. Applying the constancy, we prove the isotriviality of projective smooth families of curves over Abelian varieties. We also study the isotriviality over simply connected projective smooth varieties.
In this paper we prove that a smooth family of canonically polarized manifolds parametrized by a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective variety is isotrivial.
In this paper, we proved that a log smooth family of log general type klt pairs with a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective base is isotrivial. As a consequence, we proved the generalized Kebekus-Kovács conjecture \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{WW19}, for smooth families of general type varieties as well as log smooth families of log canonical pairs of log general type, assuming the existence of relative good minimal models.
Let Y be a projective non-singular curve of genus g, X a projective manifold, both defined over the field of complex numbers, and let f:X ---> Y be a surjective morphism with general fibre F. If the Kodaira dimension of X is non-negative, and if Y is the projective line we show that f has at least 3 singular fibres. In general, for non-isotrivial morphisms f, one expects that the number of singular fibres is at least 3, if g=0, or at least 1, if g=1. Using the strong additivity of the Kodaira dimension, this is verified, if either F is of general type, or if F has a minimal model with a semi-a…
In this paper, we prove the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of the coarse moduli spaces of canonically polarized or polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds in the sense of complex $V$-spaces (a generalization of complex $V$-manifolds in the sense of Satake). As an application, we prove the following hyperbolic version of Campana's isotriviality conjecture: for the smooth family of canonically polarized or polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds, when the Kobayashi pseudo-distance of the base vanishes identically, the family must be isotrivial, that is, any two fibers are isomorphic. We also prove that for the smooth pr…
We prove a "Generic Equivalence Theorem which says that two affine morphisms $p: S \to Y$ and $q: T \to Y$ of varieties with isomorphic (closed) fibers become isomorphic under a dominant etale base change $ϕ: U \to Y$. A special case is the following result. Call a morphism $ϕ: X \to Y$ a "fibration with fiber $F$" if $ϕ$ is flat and all fibers are (reduced and) isomorphic to $F$. Then an affine fibration with fiber $F$ admits an etale dominant morphism $μ: U \to Y$ such that the pull-back is a trivial fiber bundle: $U\times_Y X \simeq U\times F$. As an application we give short proofs of the …
We show the isotriviality of families of simply-connected hyperk\" ahler manifolds without algebraic factor, and general tori, provided the total space of the family is compact K\" ahler.
We study families of elliptic curves of degree n+1 in $P^n$ containing a fixed set of m points. In the case m = n+3 we show that this family is birationally isomorphic to a smooth complete intersection of n-2 diagonal quadrics in $P^{n+2}$. We also describe an action of the 2-elementary abelian group $2^{n+2}$ on this family via Cremona transformations in $P^n$.
Let N a compact complex submanifold of a compact complex manifold M. We say N splits in M, if the holomorphic tangent bundle sequence splits holomorphically. By a result of Mok a splitting submanifold of a Kaehler Einstein manifold with a projective structure is totally geodesic. The classification of all splitting submanifolds of families of fake elliptic curves given here completes the case of threefolds M with a projective structure by a previous result of the authors.
We determine all genus 2 curves, defined over $\mathbb C$, which have simultaneously degree 2 and 3 elliptic subcovers. The locus of such curves has three irreducible 1-dimensional genus zero components in $\mathcal M_2$. For each component we find a rational parametrization and construct the equation of the corresponding genus 2 curve and its elliptic subcovers in terms of the parameterization. Such families of genus 2 curves are determined for the first time. Furthermore, we prove that there are only finitely many genus 2 curves (up to $\mathbb C$-isomorphism) defined over $\mathbb Q$, which…
This paper deals with a study of the rational elliptic surfaces whose $J$-invariant functions are of degree one. Almost all of these elliptic surfaces have four singular fibers, while the remaining surfaces have only three singular fibers. The moduli space of these elliptic surfaces is canonically isomorphic to the projective line by taking the $J$-values for a certain fixed type of singular fibers. Over the moduli space, we discuss our elliptic surfaces, and investigate how their sections are described by the parameter of the moduli space. By using a covering space of the moduli, we construct…
We study genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves over an arbitrary base in which 2 is invertible. Particular emphasis lies on the case that the covering degree is 2. We show that the data in the "basic construction" of genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves determine the cover in a unique way (up to isomorphism). A classical theorem says that a genus 2 cover of an elliptic curve of degree 2 over a field of characteristic different from 2 is birational to a product of two elliptic curves over the projective line. We formulate and prove a generalization of this theorem for the relative si…
Geometric variations of local systems are families of variations of Hodge structure; they typically correspond to fibrations of Kähler manifolds for which each fibre itself is fibred by codimension one Kähler manifolds. In this article, we introduce the formalism of geometric variations of local systems and then specialize the theory to study families of elliptic surfaces. We interpret a construction of twisted elliptic surface families used by Besser-Livné in terms of the middle convolution functor, and use explicit methods to calculate the variations of Hodge structure underlying the univers…
We study wall crossings in Bridgeland stability for the Hilbert scheme of elliptic quartic curves in three dimensional projective space. We provide a geometric description of each of the moduli spaces we encounter, including when the second component of this Hilbert scheme appears. Along the way, we prove that the principal component of this Hilbert scheme is a double blow up with smooth centers of a Grassmannian, exhibiting a completely different proof of this known result by Avritzer and Vainsencher. This description allows us to compute the cone of effective divisors of this component.
Monodromy in analytic families of smooth complex surfaces yields groups of isotopy classes of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms for each family member X. For all deformation classes of minimal elliptic surfaces with p_g>q=0, we determine the monodromy group of a representative X, i.e. the group of isometries of the intersection lattice L_X:=H_2/torsion generated by the monodromy action of all families containing X. To this end we construct families such that any isometry is in the group generated by their monodromies or does not respect the invariance of the canonical class or the spinor …
We show that if we are given a smooth non-isotrivial family of elliptic curves over~$\mathbb C$ with a smooth base~$B$ for which the general fiber of the mapping $J\colon B\to\mathbb A^1$ (assigning $j$-invariant of the fiber to a point) is connected, then the monodromy group of the family (acting on $H^1(\cdot,\mathbb Z)$ of the fibers) coincides with $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$; if the general fiber has $m\ge2$ connected components, then the monodromy group has index at most~$2m$ in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. By contrast, in \emph{any} family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge3$, the mon…
We define a monodromy homomorphism for irreducible families of regular elliptic fibrations which takes values in the mapping class group of a punctured sphere. We compute the monodromy for elliptic fibrations only which contain no singular fibres of types other than I_1 and I*_0. There are maximal groups, which can be the monodromy groups of algebraic, resp. differentiable families of elliptic surfaces, and we give an algebraic criterion for the equality of both groups which we can check to apply in case the number of I_1 fibres is at most 6.
For $n\geq 2$, let $K=\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathbb{P}^n)=\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$. Let $E/K$ be the elliptic curve defined by a minimal Weiestrass equation $y^2=x^3+Ax+B$, with $A,B \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$. There's a canonical height $\hat{h}_{E}$ on $E(K)$ induced by the divisor $(O)$, where $O$ is the zero element of $E(K)$. On the other hand, for each smooth hypersurface $Γ$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that the reduction mod $Γ$ of $E$, $E_Γ / \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(Γ)$ is an elliptic curve with the zero element $O_Γ$, there is also a canonical height $\hat{h…
This paper is a follow up of arXiv:1702.02255 [math.NT]. We construct explicitly versal families of elliptic curves with rational points of order 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 respectively.
Monodromy groups, i.e. the groups of isometries of the intersection lattice L_X:=H_2/torsion generated by the monodromy action of all deformation families of a given surface, have been computed in math.AG/0006231 for any minimal elliptic surface with p_g>q=0. New and refined methods are now employed to address the cases of minimal elliptic surfaces with p_g+1>q>0. To this end we find explicit families such that any isometry is in the group generated by their monodromies or does not respect the invariance of the canonical class or the spinor norm. The monodromy action is moreover shown to act b…
We study Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ obtained from families of Galois coverings $f: C \rightarrow C'$ where $C'$ is a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g' \geq 1$ and $g= g(C)$. We give the complete list of all such families that satisfy a simple sufficient condition that ensures that the closure of the image of the family via the Torelli map yields a Shimura subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_g$ for $g' =1,2$ and for all $g \geq 2,4$ and for $g' > 2$ and $g \leq 9$. In a previous work of the first and second author together with A. Ghigi [FGP] similar computations were done in the c…
In this paper, we extend the ideas of Feng [F1], Feng-Xiong [FX] and Faulkner-James [FJ] to calculate the Selmer groups of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x + \varepsilon p D) (x + εq D). $
Let $f:X\to C$ be a family of semistable K3 surfaces with non-empty set $S$ of singular fibres having infinite local monodromy. Then, when the so called Arakelov-Yau inequality reaches equality, we prove that $C\setminus S$ is a modular curve and the family comes essentially from a family of elliptic curves through a so called Nikulin-Kummer construction. In particular, when $C=\BBb P^1$, the family of elliptic curves must be one of Beauville's 6 examples where Arakelov inequality reaches equality.
In this paper, we calculate the $ ϕ(\hatϕ)-$Selmer groups $ S^{(ϕ)} (E / \Q) $ and $ S^{(\hatφ)} (E^{\prime} / \Q) $ of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x + εp D) (x + εq D) $ via descent theory (see [S, Chapter X]), in particular, we obtain that the Selmer groups of several families of such elliptic curves can be arbitrary large.
We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti an…
We prove results on the Mordell--Weil rank of elliptic curves $y^2=x(x-αa^2)(x-βb^2)$ parametrized by binary quadratic forms $αa^2+βb^2=γc^2$. We express our explicit lower bounds over number fields and offer a detailed description of the corresponding Mordell-Weil group structure in the function field case.
Let $B$ be a smooth projective surface, and $\mathcal{L}$ an ample line bundle on $B$. The aim of this parer is to study the families of elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds sitting in the bundle $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{L}^a \oplus \mathcal{L}^b \oplus \mathcal{O}_B)$ as anticanonical divisors. We will show that the number of such families is finite.
We consider elliptic curves whose coefficients are degree 2 polynomials in a variable t. We prove that for infinitely many values of t the resulting elliptic curve has rank at least 1. All such curves together form an algebraic surface which is birational to a conic bundle with 7 singular fibers. The main step of the proof is to show that such conic bundles are unirational. V.2: Main theorem is corrected for small finite fields.
Let $E_λ$ be the Legendre elliptic curve of equation $Y^2=X(X-1)(X-λ)$. We recently proved that, given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1(λ), \dots,P_n(λ)$ on $E_λ$ with coordinates in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}$, there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that the points $P_1(λ_0), \dots,P_n(λ_0)$ satisfy two independent relations on $E_{λ_0}$. In this article we continue our investigations on Unlikely Intersections in families of abelian varieties and consider the case of a curve in a product of two non-isogenous families of elliptic curves and in a family of split semi-abelian v…
Let E be a one-parameter family of elliptic curves over Q. We prove that the average root number is zero for a large class of families of elliptic curves of fairly general type. Furthermore, we show that any family E with at least one point of multiplicative reduction over Q(t) has average root number 0, provided that two classical arithmetical conjectures hold for two polynomials constructed explicitly in terms of E. The behaviour of the root number in any family E without multiplicative reduction over Q(t) is shown to be rather regular and non-random; we give expressions for the average root…
For a given elliptic curve $E_0$ defined over a number field $k$, we construct two families of elliptic curves whose mod 3 representations are isomorphic to that of $E_0$. The isomorphisms in the first family are symplectic, and those in the second family are anti-symplectic. Our construction is based on the notion of Hessian and Cayleyan curves in classical geometry.
Given an elliptic curve E over a function field K=Q(T_1,...,T_n), we study the behavior of the canonical height ^h_(E_w) of the specialized elliptic curve E_w with respect to the height of w in Q^n. In this paper, we prove that there exists a uniform non-zero lower bound for the average of the quotient ^h_(E_w)(P_w)/h(w) for all non-torsion P in E(K).
Motivated by recent work of Masser and Zannier on simultaneous torsion on the Legendre elliptic curve $E_λ$ of equation $Y^2=X(X-1)(X-λ)$, we prove that, given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1(λ), ...,P_n(λ)$ on $E_λ$ with coordinates in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}$, there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that the points $P_1(λ_0), ...,P_n(λ_0)$ satisfy two independent relations on $E_{λ_0}$. This is a special case of conjectures about Unlikely Intersections on families of abelian varieties.
In this paper, we study the geometry of trisections on certain rational elliptic surfaces. We utilize Mumford representations of semi-reduced divisors in order to construct trisections and related plane curves with interesting properties explicitly. As a result we are able to construct new examples of Zariski pairs. Especially, we show the existence of a family of Zariski pairs that degenerate to the same conic-line arrangement.
We discuss the distribution of Mordell--Weil ranks of the family of elliptic curves $y^2=(x+αf^2)(x+βb g^2)(x+γh^2)$ where $f,g,h$ are coprime polynomials that parametrize the projective smooth conic $a^2+b^2=c^2$ and $α,β,γ$ are elements from $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. In our previous papers we discussed certain special cases of this problem and in this article we complete the picture by proving the general results.
We describe explicit multiplicative excellent families of rational elliptic surfaces with Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of the root lattices E_7 or E_8. The Weierstrass coefficients of each family are related by an invertible polynomial transformation to the generators of the multiplicative invariant ring of the associated Weyl group, given by the fundamental characters of the corresponding Lie group. As an application, we give examples of elliptic surfaces with multiplicative reduction and all sections defined over Q for most of the entries of fiber configurations and Mordell-Weil…
Let $E_λ$ be the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1,\dots , P_n \in E_λ\left(\overline{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}\right)$ we prove that there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that $E_{λ_0} $ has complex multiplication and $P_1(λ_0), \dots ,P_n(λ_0)$ are dependent over $End(E_{λ_0})$. This implies a positive answer to a question of Bertrand and, combined with a previous work in collaboration with Capuano, proves the Zilber-Pink conjecture for a curve in a fibered power of an elliptic scheme when everything is defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}…
We study the family of elliptic curves $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x-b^2)$ parametrized by Pythagorean triples $(a,b,c)$. We prove that for a generic triple the lower bound of the rank of the Mordell-Weil group over $\mathbb{Q}$ is 1, and for some explicitly given infinite family the rank is 2. To each family we attach an elliptic surface fibered over the projective line. We show that the lower bounds for the rank are optimal, in the sense that for each generic fiber of such an elliptic surface its corresponding Mordell-Weil group over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ has rank 1 or 2, respectively. In ord…
We determine average sizes/bounds for the $2$- and $3$-Selmer groups in various families of elliptic curves with marked points, thus confirming several cases of the Poonen--Rains heuristics. As a consequence, we deduce that the average ranks of the elliptic curves in all of these families are bounded. Our proofs are uniform and make use of parametrizations involving various forms of $2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2$ and $3 \times 3 \times 3$ matrices that we studied in a previous paper. We also deduce that $100\%$ of genus one curves of the form $y^2 = Ax^4 + Bx^2 z^2 + Cz^4$ with $A, B, C \in \m…
This paper gives various methods for constructing vector bundles over elliptic curves and more generally over families of elliptic curves. We construct universal families over generalized elliptic curves via spectral cover methods and also by extensions, and then give a relative version of the construction in families. We give various examples and make Chern class computations.
We show that the reductions modulo primes $p\le x$ of the elliptic curve $$ Y^2 = X^3 + f(a)X + g(b), $$ behave as predicted by the Lang-Trotter and Sato-Tate conjectures, on average over integers $a \in [-A,A]$ and $b \in [-B,B]$ for $A$ and $B$ reasonably small compared to $x$, provided that $f(T), g(T) \in \Z[T]$ are not powers of another polynomial over $\Q$. For $f(T) = g(T) = T$ first results of this kind are due to E. Fouvry and M. R. Murty and have been further extended by other authors. Our technique is different from that of E. Fouvry and M. R. Murty which does not seem to work in th…
We discuss the equivalence between the categories of certain ribbon graphs and subgroups of the modular group $Γ$ and use it to construct exponentially large families of not Hurwitz equivalent simple braid monodromy factorizations of the same element. As an application, we also obtain exponentially large families of {\it topologically} distinct algebraic objects such as extremal elliptic surfaces, real trigonal curves, and real elliptic surfaces.
We show the density of rational points on non-isotrivial elliptic surfaces by studying the variation of the root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces, conditionally to two analytic number theory conjectures (the squarefree conjecture and Chowla's conjecture). This is a weaker statement than the one found in a preprint of Helfgott which proves (under the same assumptions) that the average root number is $0$ when the surface admits a place of multiplicative reduction. However, we use a different technique. The conjectures involved impose a restriction on the degree of the irreducible facto…
We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K…
We give explicit generators for subgroups of finite index of the Mordell-Weil groups of several families of elliptic surfaces introduced by Masato Kuwata.
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
This thesis establishes a geometric approach to the de Rham realization of the polylogarithm. As a central result we construct the logarithm sheaves of rational abelian schemes in terms of the birigidified Poincaré bundle with universal integrable connection on the product of the abelian scheme and the universal vectorial extension of its dual. This is achieved essentially by restricting the mentioned data of the Poincaré bundle along the infinitesimal neighborhoods of the zero section of the universal extension. We also clarify how these constructions naturally express within the language of …
