We provide new information concerning the pseudospectra of the complex harmonic oscillator. Our analysis illustrates two different techniques for getting resolvent norm estimates. The first uses the JWKB method and extends for this particular potential some results obtained recently by E.B. Davies. The second relies on the fact that the bounded holomorphic semigroup generated by the complex harmonic oscillator is of Hilbert-Schmidt type in a maximal angular region. In order to show this last property, we deduce a non-self-adjoint version of the classical Mehler's formula.
We describe the general qualitative behaviour of the resolvent norm for a very wide class of non-self-adjoint Schroedinger operators in the semi-classical regime, as the spectral parameter varies over the complex plane.
We study evolution equations with non-self-adjoint generators, for example the convection-diffusion equation. Spectral expansions are not a reliable method of solving such equations, because they are so ill-conditioned. We introduce a new method using pseusospectra to produce an approximated spectral expansion, and explain its theoretical status. We also give some simple numerical examples to show that it is much better conditioned.
We consider non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $Δ+V$ where $Δ$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Zoll manifold $X$ and $V\in C^\infty(X,\mathbb C)$. We obtain asymptotic results on the pseudo-spectrum and numerical range of such operators.
We prove lower bounds on $||T_t||$, where $T_t$ is a one-parameter semigroup, starting from information on the resolvent norms, i.e. the pseudospectra. We provide a physically important example in which the growth of the semigroup norm cannot be derived from spectral information. The generator is a self-adjoint Schrödinger operator, but the semigroup growth is measured using the $L^1$ norm rather than the $L^2$ norm. Numerical confirmation of the results is provided.
We propose giving the mathematical concept of the pseudospectrum a central role in quantum mechanics with non-Hermitian operators. We relate pseudospectral properties to quasi-Hermiticity, similarity to self-adjoint operators, and basis properties of eigenfunctions. The abstract results are illustrated by unexpected wild properties of operators familiar from PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.
We obtain slow dynamics for self-adjoint semigroups and unitary evolution groups. For semigroups, the slow dynamics is for orbits, and for the average return probability in the case of unitary evolution groups. We present an application to the quantum dynamics of purely absolutely continuous systems
We propose a new approach to construct the eigenvalue expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of the solution to the Cauchy problem associated to Gauss-Laguerre invariant Markov semigroups that we introduce. Their generators turn out to be natural non-self-adjoint and non-local generalizations of the Laguerre differential operator. Our methods rely on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigroups and the classical Laguerre semigroup and combine with techniques based on non-harmonic analysis. As a by-product we also provide regularity properties for the semigroups as well as f…
In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excur…
We provide the spectral expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of a substantial class of invariant non-self-adjoint and non-local Markov operators which appear in limit theorems for positive-valued Markov processes. We show that this class is in bijection with a subset of negative definite functions and we name it the class of generalized Laguerre semigroups. Our approach, which goes beyond the framework of perturbation theory, is based on an in-depth and original analysis of an intertwining relation that we establish between this class and a self-adjoint Markov semigroup, whose spectral expans…
In this paper, we provide the spectral decomposition in Hilbert space of the $\mathcal{C}_0$-semigroup $P$ and its adjoint $\hatP$ having as generator, respectively, the Caputo and the right-sided Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives of index $1<α<2$. These linear operators, which are non-local and non-self-adjoint, appear in many recent studies in applied mathematics and also arise as the infinitesimal generators of some substantial processes such as the reflected spectrally negative $α$-stable process. Our approach relies on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigrou…
Assuming that a Nash type inequality is satisfied by a non-negative self-adjoint operator $A$, we prove a Nash type inequality for the fractional powers $A^α$ of $A$. Under some assumptions, we give ultracontractivity bounds for the semigroup $(T_{t,α})$ generated by $-A^α$.
We start by identifying a class of pseudo-differential operators, generated by the set of continuous negative definite functions, that are in the weak similarity (WS) orbit of the self-adjoint log-Bessel operator on the Euclidean space. These WS relations turn out to be useful to first characterize a core for each operator in this class, which enables us to show that they generate a class, denoted by $\mathscr{P}$, of non-self-adjoint $\mathcal{C}_0$-contraction positive semigroups. Up to a homeomorphism, $\mathscr{P}$ includes, as fundamental objects in probability theory, the family of self-…
We present a survey of some recent results concerning the location and the Weyl formula for the complex eigenvalues of two non self-adjoint operators. We study the eigenvalues of the generator $G$ of the contraction semigroup $e^{tG}, \: t \geq 0,$ related to the wave equation in an unbounded domain $Ω$ with dissipative boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$. Also one examines the interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) in a bounded domain $K$ obtaining a Weyl formula with remainder for the counting function $N(r)$ of complex (ITE). The analysis is based on a semi-classical approach.
In this paper, we introduce and study non-local Jacobi operators, which generalize the classical (local) Jacobi operators. We show that these operators extend to generators of ergodic Markov semigroups with unique invariant probability measures and study their spectral and convergence properties. In particular, we derive a series expansion of the semigroup in terms of explicitly defined polynomials, which generalize the classical Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we give a complete characterization of the spectrum of the non-self-adjoint generator and semigroup. We show that the vari…
On finite metric graphs the set of all realizations of the Laplace operator in the edgewise defined $L^2$-spaces are studied. These are defined by coupling boundary conditions at the vertices most of which define non-self-adjoint operators. In [Hussein, Krejčiř\'ık, Siegl, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 367(4):2921--2957, 2015] a notion of regularity of boundary conditions by means of the Cayley transform of the parametrizing matrices has been proposed. The main point presented here is that not only the existence of this Cayley transform is essential for basic spectral properties, but also its poles…
The aim of this paper is to offer an original and comprehensive spectral theoretical approach to the study of convergence to equilibrium, and in particular of the hypocoercivity phenomenon, for contraction semigroups in Hilbert spaces. Our approach rests on a commutation relationship for linear operators known as intertwining, and we utilize this identity to transfer spectral information from a known, reference semigroup $\tilde{P} = (e^{-t\tilde{\mathbf A}})_{t \geq 0}$ to a target semigroup $P$ which is the object of study. This allows us to obtain conditions under which $P$ satisfies a hypo…
We study the Schrödinger operator with a potential given by the sum of the potentials for harmonic oscillator and imaginary cubic oscillator and we focus on its pseudospectral properties. A summary of known results about the operator and its spectrum is provided and the importance of examining its pseudospectrum as well is emphasized. This is achieved by employing scaling techniques and treating the operator using semiclassical methods. The existence of pseudoeigenvalues very far from the spectrum is proven, and as a consequence, the spectrum of the operator is unstable with respect to small p…
This paper deals with the derivation of a sharp estimate on the difference of traces of the one-parameter Schrödinger semigroup associated to the quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator. Denoting by $H_{\infty,κ}$ the self-adjoint realization in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$, $d \in \{1,2,3\}$ of the Schrödinger operator $-\frac{1}{2} Δ+ \frac{1}{2} κ^{2}\vert \bold{x}\vert^{2}$, $κ>0$ and by $H_{L,κ}$, $L>0$ the Dirichlet realization in $L^{2}(Λ_{L}^{d})$ where $Λ_{L}^{d}:=\{\bold{x} \in \mathbb{R}^{d}:- \frac{L}{2} < x_{l} < \frac{L}{2},\,l=1,\ldots,d\}$, we prove that the difference of traces $\mat…
