We study from a geographical point of view fibrations of threefolds over smooth curves, such that the general fibre is of general type. We prove the non-negativity of certain relative invariants under general hypotheses and give lower bounds for the self-interssection of the relative canonical divisor of the fibration, depending on other relative invariants. We also study the influence of the relative irregularity on these bounds. A more detailed study of the lowest cases of the bounds is given.
We study threefolds fibred by Kummer surfaces associated to products of elliptic curves, that arise as resolved quotients of threefolds fibred by certain lattice polarized K3 surfaces under a fibrewise Nikulin involution. We present a general construction for such surfaces, before specializing our results to study Calabi-Yau threefolds arising as resolved quotients of threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. Finally, we give some geometric properties of the Calabi-Yau threefolds that we have constructed, including expressions for Hodge numbers.
We give a conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of fibred threefolds. The construction depends on a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for certain stable complexes. It can be considered as a relative version of the construction of Bayer, Macrì and Toda. We prove the conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality in the case of relative projective planes over curves. This gives the the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds.
We study threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the moduli space of mirror quartic K3 surfaces. This is then used to give a complete explicit description of all Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We conclude by studying the properties of such Calabi-Yau threefolds, including their Hodge numbers and deformation theory.
We study threefolds fibred by K3 surfaces admitting a lattice polarization by a certain class of rank 19 lattices. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the appropriate K3 moduli space, which we call the generalized functional invariant. Then we show that if the threefold total space is a smooth Calabi-Yau, there are only finitely many possibilities for the polarizing lattice and the form of the generalized functional invariant. Finally, we construct explicit examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds realizing each case…
We consider threefolds that admit a fibration by K3 surfaces over a nonsingular curve, equipped with a divisorial sheaf that defines a polarisation of degree two on the general fibre. Under certain assumptions on the threefold we show that its relative log canonical model exists and can be explicitly reconstructed from a small set of data determined by the original fibration. Finally we prove a converse to the above statement: under certain assumptions, any such set of data determines a threefold that arises as the relative log canonical model of a threefold admitting a fibration by K3 surface…
Let f :S\to B be a non locally trivial fibred surface. We prove a lower bound for the slope of f depending increasingly from the relative irregularity of f and the Clifford index of the general fibres.
We prove new slope inequalities for relatively minimal fibred surfaces, showing an influence of the relative irregularity, of the unitary rank and of the Clifford index on the slope. The argument uses Xiao's method and a new Clifford-type inequality for subcanonical systems on non-hyperelliptic curves.
In this paper we present a generalisation of a theorem due to Cornalba and Harris, which is an application of Geometric Invariant Theory to the study of invariants of fibrations. In particular, our generalisation makes it possible to treat the problem of bounding the invariants of general fibred surfaces. As a first application, we give a new proof of the slope inequality and of a bound for the invariants associated to double cover fibrations.
Given a relatively minimal non locally trivial fibred surface f: S->B, the slope of the fibration is a numerical invariant associated to the fibration. In this paper we explore how properties of the general fibre of $f$ and global properties of S influence on the lower bound of the slope. First of all we obtain lower bounds of the slope when the general fibre is a double cover. We also obtain a lower bound depending as an increasing function on the relative irregularity of the fibration, extending previous results of Xiao. We construct several families of examples to check the assimptotical sh…
Let $f:\,S \to B$ be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of genus $g\geq 2$ with relative irregularity $q_f$. It was conjectured by Barja and Stoppino that the slope $λ_f\geq \frac{4(g-1)}{g-q_f}$. We prove the conjecture when $q_f$ is small with respect to $g$; we also construct counterexamples when $g$ is odd and $q_f=(g+1)/2$.
1) We give a 3-dimensional analogue of M. Noether's inequality for canonically polarized threefolds: $K^3\ge 2(2p_g-5)/3$. This inequality is sharp by known examples of M. Kobayashi. 2) Given a minimal 3-fold $X$ of general type with canonical singularities, if $K^3< (3p_g-5)/2$, we show that $X$ must be birationally fibred by curves of genus 2.
We strengthen a conjecture by the author. This conjecture is a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality involving the third Chern character of mixed tilt-stable complexes on fibred threefolds. We extend it from complexes of mixed tilt-slope zero to arbitrary relative tilt-slope. We show that this stronger conjecture implies the support property of Bridgeland stability conditions, and the existence of explicit stability conditions. We prove our conjecture for ruled threefolds, hence improving a previous result by the author.
Let f: X->B be a fibred surface of genus g whose general fibre is a double cover of a smooth curve of genus gamma. We show that, for g > 4gamma+1, the number 4(g-1)/(g-gamma) is a sharp lower bound for the slope of f, proving a conjecture of Barja. Moreover, we give a characterisation of the fibred surfaces that reach the bound. In the case g = 4gamma+1 we obtain the same sharp bound under the assumption that the involutions on the general fibres glue to a global involution on X.
We study and obtain Slope inequalities for fibred irregular varieties of non-maximal Albanese dimension. We give a comparison theorem between Clifford-Severi and Slope inequalities for this type of fibrations. We also obtain a set of Slope inequalities considering the geometry of the Albanese map and the associated eventual maps.
On the product elliptic threefold $X = C \times S$ where $C$ is an elliptic curve and $S$ is a K3 surface of Picard rank 1, we define a notion of limit tilt stability, which satisfies the Harder-Narasimhan property. We show that under the Fourier-Mukai transform $Φ$ on $D^b(X)$ induced by the classical Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(C)$, a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is taken to a limit tilt stable object. We also show that a limit tilt semistable object on $X$ is taken by $Φ$ to a slope semistable sheaf, up to mod…
We focus on a class of Weierstrass elliptic threefolds that allows the base of the fibration to be a Fano surface or a numerically $K$-trivial surface. We define the notion of limit tilt stability, and show that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is a limit tilt stable object. We also show that the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform of a limit tilt semistable object of nonzero fiber degree is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf, up to modification in codimension 2.
We prove the conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for tilt slope stable objects on each Fano threefold X of Picard number one. Based on the previous works on Bridgeland stability conditions, this induces an open subset of geometric stability conditions on D^b(X). We also get a new stronger bound for the Chern characters of slope semistable sheaves on X.
We investigate properties and describe examples of tilt-stable objects on a smooth complex projective threefold. We give a structure theorem on slope semistable sheaves of vanishing discriminant, and describe certain Chern classes for which every slope semistable sheaf yields a Bridgeland semistable object of maximal phase. Then, we study tilt stability as the polarisation $ω$ gets large, and give sufficient conditions for tilt-stability of sheaves of the following two forms: 1) twists of ideal sheaves or 2) torsion-free sheaves whose first Chern class is twice a minimum possible value.
K. Konno proved a slope equality for fibred surfaces with fibres of odd genus and general fibre of maximal gonality. More precisely he found a relation between the invariants of the fibration and certain weights of special fibres (called the Horikawa numbers). We give an alternative and more geometric proof in the case of a genus 5 fibration, under generality assumptions. In our setting we are able to prove that the fibre with positive Horikawa numbers are precisely the trigonal ones, we compute their weights explicitly and thus we exhibit explicit examples of regular surfaces with assigned in…
We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.

In this note we show that Frobenius split smooth, projective threefolds are Hodge-Witt (using a criterion for the degeneration of the slope spectral sequence of smooth projective threefolds which we prove), and that smooth, projective Frobenius split varieties do not have exotic torsion in their slope spectral sequence. We also record a few simple observations on Frobenius split threefolds. This paper complements authors paper with C. S. Rajan ``On Frobenius splitting and ordinarity'' which is also available on this archive.
Being inspired by Ross' construction of unstable products of certain smooth curves, we show that the product $C\times C$ of every smooth curve $C$ of genus at least 2 is not slope semistable with respect to certain polarisations. Besides, we produce examples of Kodaira-fibred surfaces of nonzero signature, which are not slope semistable with respect to some polarisations, and so they admit Kähler classes that do not contain any constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics.
We study duality spectral sequences for Weierstrass fibrations. Using these spectral sequences, we show that on a K-trivial Weierstrass threefold over a K-numerically trivial surface, any line bundle of nonzero fiber degree is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope stable locally free sheaf.
We give a sharp lower bound for the selfintersection of a nef line bundle $L$ on an irregular variety $X$ in terms of its continuous global sections and the Albanese dimension of $X$, which we call the Generalized Clifford-Severi inequality. We also extend the result to nef vector bundles and give a slope inequality for fibred irregular varieties. As a byproduct we obtain a lower bound for the volume of irregular varieties; when $X$ is of maximal Albanese dimension the bound is $Vol(X) \geq 2 n! χω_X$ and it is sharp.
This is a modest attempt to study, in a systematic manner, the structure of low dimensional varieties in positive characteristics using $p$-adic invariants. The main objects of interest in this paper are surfaces and threefolds. It is known that there are many (counter) examples of `pathological' or unexpected behavior in surfaces and even of threefolds. Our focus has been on, obtaining systematically, general positive results instead of counter examples. There are many results we prove in this paper and not all can be listed in this abstract. Here are some of the results we prove: We show tha…
We study threefolds $Y$ fibred by $A_m$-surfaces over a curve $S$ of positive genus. An ideal triangulation of $S$ defines, for each rank $m$, a quiver $Q(Δ_m)$, hence a $CY_3$-category $(C,W)$ for any potential $W$ on $Q(Δ_m)$. We show that for $ω$ in an open subset of the Kähler cone, a subcategory of a sign-twisted Fukaya category of $(Y,ω)$ is quasi-isomorphic to $(C,W_{[ω]})$ for a certain generic potential $W_{[ω]}$. This partially establishes a conjecture of Goncharov concerning `categorifications' of cluster varieties of framed $PGL_{m+1}$-local systems on $S$, and gives a symplectic g…
Integrals of characteristic classes of tautological sheaves on the Hilbert scheme of points on a surface frequently arise in enumerative problems. We use the K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory of certain toric Calabi-Yau threefolds to study K-theoretic variants of such expressions. We study limits of the K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas partition function of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold under certain one-parameter subgroups called slopes, and formulate a condition under which two such limits coincide. We then explicitly compute the limits of components of the partition function under so-called pr…
