We express characteristic numbers of compact hyperkähler manifolds in graph-theoretical form, considering them as a special case of the curvature invariants introduced by Rozansky and Witten. The appropriate graphs are generated by ``wheels'' and we use the recently proved Wheeling Theorem to give a formula for the L2 norm of the curvature of an irreducible hyperkähler manifold in terms of the volume and Pontryagin numbers. The formula involves the multiplicative sequence which is the square root of the A-hat polynomial.
For the sake of hyperk{ä}hler SYZ conjecture, finding holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations becomes an important issue. Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are real dimension $4n$ non-compact hyperk{ä}hler manifolds which are quaternion analog of toric varieties. The $n$ dimensional residue circle action on it admitting a hyperk{ä}hler moment map. We use the complex part of this moment map to construct a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with generic fiber diffeomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, and study the singular fibers.
Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are quaternion analog of toric varieties. Bielawski pointed out that they can be glued by cotangent bundles of toric varieties. Following his idea, viewing both toric varieties and toric hyperk{ä}her manifolds as GIT quotients, we first establish geometrical criteria for the semi-stable points. Then based on these criteria, we show that the cotangent bundles of compact toric varieties in the core of toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold are sufficient to glue the desired toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold.
We investigate invariants of compact hyperk{ä}hler manifolds introduced by Rozansky and Witten: they associate an invariant to each graph homology class. It is obtained by using the graph to perform contractions on a power of the curvature tensor and then integrating the resulting scalar-valued function over the manifold, arriving at a number. For certain graph homology classes, the invariants we get are Chern numbers, and in fact all characteristic numbers arise in this way. We use relations in graph homology to study and compare these hyperk{ä}hler manifold invariants. For example, we show t…
Let $M^n$ be a compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonzero first Betti number. We show that the holomorphic Euler number of $M^n$ vanishes, which gives a new obstruction for compact complex manifolds admitting K$\ddot{a}$hler metrics with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature. A crucial step in the proof is to show a vanishing theorem of Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology.
In this note we prove the following result: There is a positive constant $ε(n,Λ)$ such that if $M^n$ is a simply connected compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with sectional curvature bounded from above by $Λ$, diameter bounded from above by 1, and with holomorphic bisectional curvature $H \geq -ε(n,Λ)$, then $M^n$ is diffeomorphic to the product $M_1\times ... \times M_k$, where each $M_i$ is either a complex projective space or an irreducible K$\ddot{a}$hler-Hermitian symmetric space of rank $\geq 2$. This resolves a conjecture of F. Fang under the additional upper bound restrictions on section…
In this paper, we show that any compact K$ä$hler manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature admits a K$ä$hler-Einstein metric of general type. Moreover, we prove that, on a compact symplectic manifold $X$ homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature, for any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the symplectic form, there is no non-constant $J$-holomorphic entire curve $f:C \rightarrow X$.
On any compact Riemann surface there always exists a singular non-CSC (constant scalar curvature) extremal K$\ddot{a}$hler metric which is called a non-CSC HCMU (the Hessian of the Curvature of the Metric is Umbilical) metric. In this paper, by moving frames, we show that any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically minimal immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms even locally. In general, any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms with constant mean curvature (CMC).
The object of the present paper is to study some properties of para-K$ä$hler manifold whose metric is conformal Einstein soliton. We have studied some certain curvature properties of para-K$ä$hler manifold admitting conformal Einstein soliton.
In this paper we prove that for a complete, connected and oriented Käler affine manifold $(M,G)$ of dimension $n,$ if it is Kähler affine Ricci flat or the K$\ddot{a}$hler affine scalar curvature $S\equiv0,$ ($n\leq 5$), then the universal covering manifold $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$ is isometric to the Euclidean n-space $E^{n}$.
We introduce a class of almost homogeneous varieties contained in the class of spherical varieties and containing horospherical varieties as well as complete symmetric varieties. We develop K{ä}hler geometry on these varieties, with applications to canonical metrics in mind, as a generalization of the Guillemin-Abreu-Donaldson geometry of toric varieties. Namely we associate convex functions with hermitian metrics on line bundles, and express the curvature form in terms of this function, as well as the corresponding Monge-Amp{è}re volume form and scalar curvature. We then provide an expression…
In this paper, we firstly prove that every hyper-Lagrangian submanifold $L^{2n} (n > 1)$ in a hyperkähler $4n$-manifold is a complex Lagrangian submanifold. Secondly, we demonstrate an optimal rigidity theorem with the condition on the complex phase map of self-shrinking surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Last but not least, by using the previous rigidity result, we show that the mean curvature flow from a closed surface with the image of the complex phase map contained in $\mathbb{S}^2\setminus\overline{\mathbb{S}}^{1}_{+}$ in a hyperkähler $4$-manifold does not develop any Type \Rmn{1} singularity.
Inspired by the work of Leung-Wan, we study the mean curvature flow in hyperkähler manifolds starting from hyper-Lagrangian submanifolds, a class of middle dimensional submanifolds, which contains the class of complex Lagrangian submanifolds. For each hyper-Lagrangian submanifold, we define a new energy concept called the "twistor energy" by means of the associated twistor family (i.e. 2-sphere of complex structures). We will show that the mean curvature flow starting at any hyper-Lagrangian submanifold with sufficiently small twistor energy will exist for all time and converge to a complex La…
By establishing two general quadratic inequalities, we obtain some inequalities related to Ricci curvatures for Lagrangian submanifolds of K$\ddot{\mathrm{a}}$hler QCH-manifolds, which generalize some results for Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms.
In this paper, the HyperKahler contact distribution of a 3-Sasakian manifold is studied. To analyze the curvature properties of this distribution, the special metric connection $\bar{\nabla}$ is defined. This metric connection is completely determined by HyperKahler contact distribution. We prove that HyperKahler contact distribution is of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures if and only if its 3-Sasakian manifold is of constant $φ_α$-sectional curvatures. Moreover, it is shown that there is an interesting relation between the sectional curvatures of $φ_α$-planes on $TM$ of metric connect…
We discuss a natural extension of the Kähler reduction of Fujiki and Donaldson, which realises the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics as a moment map, to a hyperkähler reduction. Our approach is based on an explicit construction of hyperkähler metrics due to Biquard and Gauduchon. This extension is reminiscent of how one derives Hitchin's equations for harmonic bundles, and yields real and complex moment map equations which deform the constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) condition. In the special case of complex curves we recover previous results of Donaldson. We focus on the case of comple…
We conjecture that certain curvature invariants of compact hyperkähler manifolds are positive/negative. We prove the conjecture in complex dimension four, give an "experimental proof" in higher dimensions, and verify it for all known hyperkähler manifolds up to dimension eight. As an application, we show that our conjecture leads to a bound on the second Betti number in all dimensions.
We study an infinite-dimensional hyperkähler reduction introduced by Donaldson and associated with the constant scalar curvature equation on a Riemann surface. It is known that the corresponding moment map equations admit special solutions constructed from holomorphic quadratic differentials. Here we obtain a more general existence result and so a larger hyperkähler moduli space.
For any complete noncompact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with nonnegative and bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature,we provide the necessary and sufficient condition for non-ancient solution to the Ricci flow in this paper.
Let $(M^3,g_0)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. Suppose that the scalar curvature $R(x)\to 0$ as $x\to \infty$. Then the Ricci flow with initial data $(M^3,g_0)$ has a long time solution. This extends a recent result of Ma and Zhu. We also have a higher dimensional version, and we reprove a K$\ddot{a}$hler analogy due to Chau, Tam and Yu.
Donaldon constructed a hyperkähler moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ associated to a closed oriented surface $Σ$ with $\textrm{genus}(Σ) \geq 2$. This embeds naturally into the cotangent bundle $T^*\mathcal{T}(Σ)$ of Teichmüller space or can be identified with the almost-Fuchsian moduli space associated to $Σ$. The later is the moduli space of quasi-Fuchsian threefolds which contain a unique incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures in $(-1,1)$. Donaldson outlined various remarkable properties of this moduli space for which we provide complete proofs in this paper: On the cotangent-bun…
We construct large families of new collapsing hyperkähler metrics on the K3 surface. The limit space is the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution. Away from finitely many exceptional points the collapse occurs with bounded curvature. There are at most 24 exceptional points where the curvature concentrates, which always contains the 8 fixed points of the involution on the 3-torus. The geometry around these points is modelled by ALF gravitational instantons: of dihedral type (Dk) for the fixed points of the involution on the 3-torus and of cyclic type (Ak) otherwise. The collapsing metrics…
An instanton $(E, D)$ on a (pseudo-)hyperkähler manifold $M$ is a vector bundle $E$ associated to a principal $G$-bundle with a connection $D$ whose curvature is pointwise invariant under the quaternionic structures of $T_x M, \ x\in M$, and thus satisfies the Yang-Mills equations. Revisiting a construction of solutions, we prove a local bijection between gauge equivalence classes of instantons on $M$ and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic functions taking values in the Lie algebra of $G^\mathbb{C}$ defined on an appropriate $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-bundle over $M$. Our reformulation affords…
The twistor space of a Riemannian 4-manifold carries two almost complex structures, $J_+$ and $J_-$, and a natural closed 2-form $ω$. This article studies limits of manifolds for which $ω$ tames either $J_+$ or $J_-$. This amounts to a curvature inequality involving self-dual Weyl curvature and Ricci curvature, and which is satisfied, for example, by all anti-self-dual Einstein manifolds with non-zero scalar curvature. We prove that if a sequence of manifolds satisfying the curvature inequality converges to a hyperkähler limit X (in the $C^2$ pointed topology) then X cannot contain a holomorph…
Using quaternionic Feix--Kaledin construction we provide a local classification of quaternion-Kähler metrics with a rotating $S^1$-symmetry with the fixed point set submanifold $S$ of maximal possible dimension. For any Kähler manifold $S$ equipped with a line bundle with a unitary connection of curvature proportional to the Kähler form we explicitly construct a holomorphic contact distribution on the twistor space obtained by the quaternionic Feix-Kaledin construction from this data. Conversely, we show that quaternion-Kähler metrics with a rotating $S^1$-symmetry induce on the fixed point se…
A hypersymplectic structure on a 4-manifold $X$ is a triple $\underlineω$ of symplectic forms which at every point span a maximal positive-definite subspace of $Λ^2$ for the wedge product. This article is motivated by a conjecture of Donaldson: when $X$ is compact $\underlineω$ can be deformed through cohomologous hypersymplectic structures to a hyperkähler triple. We approach this via a link with $G_2$-geometry. A hypersymplectic structure $\underlineω$ on a compact manifold $X$ defines a natural $G_2$-structure $ϕ$ on $X \times \mathbb{T}^3$ which has vanishing torsion precisely when $\under…
The pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M=(M^{4n},g), n \geq 2$ is para-quaternionic K\" ahler if $hol(M) \subset sp(n, \RR) \oplus sp(1, \RR).$ If $hol(M) \subset sp(n, \RR),$ than the manifold $M$ is called para-hyperK\" ahler. The other possible definitions of these manifolds use certain parallel para-quaternionic structures in $\End (TM),$ similarly to the quaternionic case. In order to relate these different definitions we study para-quaternionic algebras in details. We describe the reduction method for the para-quaternionic K\" ahler and para-hyperK\" ahler manifolds and give some examples. The …
We generalize the Bochner technique to foliations with non-negative transverse Ricci curvature. In particular, we obtain a new vanishing theorem for basic cohomology. Subsequently, we provide two natural applications, namely to degenerate 3-$(α,δ) $-Sasaki and certain Sasaki-$ η$-Einstein manifolds, which arise for example as Boothby-Wang bundles over hyperkähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds, respectively.
This is our second paper in a series to study gravitational instantons, i.e. complete hyperkäler 4-manifolds with faster than quadratic curvature decay. We prove two main theorems: 1.The asymptotic rate of gravitational instantons to the standard models can be improved automatically. 2.Any ALF-D_k gravitational instanton must be the Cherkis-Hitchin-Ivanov-Kapustin-Lindström-Roček metric.
We present an infinite-dimensional hyperkähler reduction that extends the classical moment map picture of Fujiki and Donaldson for the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics. We base our approach on an explicit construction of hyperkähler metrics due to Biquard and Gauduchon. The construction is motivated by how one can derive Hitchin's equations for harmonic bundles from the Hermitian Yang-Mills equation, and yields a system of moment map equations which modifies the constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) condition by adding a "Higgs field" to the cscK equation. In the special case of complex cu…
We compute the hessian of the natural Hermitian form successively on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold, on the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Riemannian manifold and on the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähler manifold. We show a strong convexity property of the cycle space of twistor lines on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold. We also prove convexity properties of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Einstein manifold of non-positive scalar curvature and of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähle…
We study a system of equations on a compact complex manifold, that couples the scalar curvature of a Kaehler metric with a spectral function of a first-order deformation of the complex structure. The system comes from an infinite-dimensional Kaehler reduction, which is a hyperkaehler reduction for a particular choice of the spectral function. The system can be formally complexified using a flat connection on the space of first-order deformations that are compatible with a Kaehler metric. We describe a variational characterization of the equations, a Futaki invariant for the system, and a gener…
The Donaldson-Fujiki Kähler reduction of the space of compatible almost complex structures, leading to the interpretation of the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics as a moment map, can be lifted canonically to a hyperkähler reduction. Donaldson proposed to consider the corresponding vanishing moment map conditions as (fully nonlinear) analogues of Hitchin's equations, for which the underlying bundle is replaced by a polarised manifold. However this construction is well understood only in the case of complex curves. In this paper we study Donaldson's hyperkähler reduction on abelian varieties a…
The generalized Feix--Kaledin construction shows that c-projective $2n$-manifolds with curvature of type $(1,1)$ are precisely the submanifolds of quaternionic $4n$-manifolds which are fixed points set of a special type of quaternionic $S^1$ action $v$. In this paper, we consider this construction in the presence of infinitesimal symmetries of the two geometries. First, we prove that the submaximally symmetric c-projective model with type $(1,1)$ curvature is a submanifold of a submaximally symmetric quaternionic model, and show how this fits into the construction. We give conditions for when …
Starting from a complex manifold S with a real-analytic c-projective structure whose curvature has type (1,1), and a complex line bundle L with a connection whose curvature has type (1,1), we construct the twistor space Z of a quaternionic manifold M with a quaternionic circle action which contains S as a totally complex submanifold fixed by the action. This extends a construction of hypercomplex manifolds, including hyperkaehler metrics on cotangent bundles, obtained independently by B. Feix and D. Kaledin. When S is a Riemann surface, M is a self-dual conformal 4-manifold, and the quotient o…
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
