We solve Poisson's equation using new multigrid algorithms that converge rapidly. The novel feature of the 2D and 3D algorithms are the use of extra diagonal grids in the multigrid hierarchy for a much richer and effective communication between the levels of the multigrid. Numerical experiments solving Poisson's equation in the unit square and unit cube show simple versions of the proposed algorithms are up to twice as fast as correspondingly simple multigrid iterations on a conventional hierarchy of grids.
A comparative study of efficient multigrid solvers for high-order local discontinuous Galerkin methods: Poisson, elliptic interface, and multiphase Stokes problems
A method is presented to include irregular domain boundaries in a geometric multigrid solver. Dirichlet boundary conditions can be imposed on an irregular boundary defined by a level set function. Our implementation employs quadtree/octree grids with adaptive refinement, a cell-centered discretization and pointwise smoothing. Boundary locations are determined at a subgrid resolution by performing line searches. For grid blocks near the interface, custom operator stencils are stored that take the interface into account. For grid block away from boundaries, a standard second-order accurate discr…
In this work, we benchmark and discuss the performance of the scalable methods for the Poisson problem which are used widely in practice: the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the fast multipole method (FMM), the geometric multigrid (GMG), and algebraic multigrid (AMG). In total we compare five different codes, three of which are developed in our group. Our FFT, GMG, and FMM are parallel solvers that use high-order approximation schemes for Poisson problems with continuous forcing functions (the source or right-hand side). We examine and report results for weak scaling, strong scaling, and time to…
We consider an additive Vanka-type smoother for the Poisson equation discretized by the standard finite difference centered scheme. Using local Fourier analysis, we derive analytical formulas for the optimal smoothing factors for two types of smoothers, called vertex-wise and element-wise Vanka smoothers, and present the corresponding stencils. Interestingly, in one dimension the element-wise Vanka smoother is equivalent to the scaled mass operator obtained from the linear finite element method, and in two dimensions the element-wise Vanka smoother is equivalent to the scaled mass operator dis…
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.

A fast multigrid solver is presented for high-order accurate Stokes problems discretised by local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods. The multigrid algorithm consists of a simple V-cycle, using an element-wise block Gauss-Seidel smoother. The efficacy of this approach depends on the LDG pressure penalty stabilisation parameter -- provided the parameter is suitably chosen, numerical experiment shows that: (i) for steady-state Stokes problems, the convergence rate of the multigrid solver can match that of classical geometric multigrid methods for Poisson problems; (ii) for unsteady Stokes prob…
We consider the numerical solution of Poisson's equation on structured grids using geometric multigrid with nonstandard coarse grids and coarse level operators. We are motivated by the problem of developing high-order accurate numerical solvers for elliptic boundary value problems on complex geometry using overset grids. Overset grids are typically dominated by large Cartesian background grids and thus fast solvers for Cartesian grids are highly desired. For flexibility in grid generation we would like to consider coarsening factors other than two, and lower-order accurate coarse-level approxi…
Within the framework of $ p $-adaptive flux reconstruction, we aim to construct efficient polynomial multigrid ($p$MG) preconditioners for implicit time integration of the Navier--Stokes equations using Jacobian-free Newton--Krylov (JFNK) methods. We hypothesise that in pseudo transient continuation (PTC), as the residual drops, the frequency of error modes that dictates the convergence rate gets higher and higher. We apply nonlinear $p$MG solvers to stiff steady problems at low Mach number ($\mathrm{Ma}=10^{-3}$) to verify our hypothesis. It is demonstrated that once the residual drops by a f…
This contribution presents a hierarchical multigrid approach for the solution of large-scale finite cell problems on both uniform grids and multi-level hp-discretizations. The proposed scheme leverages the hierarchical nature of the basis functions utilized in the finite cell method and the multi-level hp-method, which is attributed to the use of high-order integrated Legendre basis functions and overlay meshes, to yield a simple and elegant multigrid scheme. This simplicity is reflected in the fact that all restriction and prolongation operators reduce to binary matrices that do not need to b…

The solution to the Poisson equation arising from the spectral element discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation requires robust preconditioning strategies. One such strategy is multigrid. To realize the potential of multigrid methods, effective smoothing strategies are needed. Chebyshev polynomial smoothing proves to be an effective smoother. However, there are several improvements to be made, especially at the cost of symmetry. For the same cost per iteration, a full V-cycle with $k$ order Chebyshev polynomial smoothing may be substituted with a half V-cycle with order $2k$…

We develop a universally applicable embedded boundary finite difference method, which results in a symmetric positive definite linear system and does not suffer from small cell stiffness. Our discretization is efficient for the wave, heat and Poisson's equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. When the system needs to be inverted we can use the conjugate gradient method, accelerated by algebraic multigrid techniques. A series of numerical tests for the wave, heat and Poisson's equation and applications to shape optimization problems verify the accuracy, stability, and efficiency of our meth…
Numerical Solution of 3D Poisson-Nernst-Planck Equations Coupled with Classical Density Functional Theory for Modeling Ion and Electron Transport in a Confined Environment
This paper introduces a discretization-accurate stopping criterion of symmetric iterative methods for solving systems of algebraic equations resulting from the finite element approximation. The stopping criterion consists of the evaluations of the discretization and the algebraic error estimators, that are based on the respective duality error estimator and the difference of two consecutive iterates. Iterations are terminated when the algebraic estimator is of the same magnitude as the discretization estimator. Numerical results for multigrid $V(1,1)$-cycle and symmetric Gauss-Seidel iterative…
